just flashed C6906 14.2.A.0.290 Generic CA 1276-7484_R2B then did an update to 4.4.2 via pc companion. I however am not rooted
Now I am hoping to obtain root in a 4.2 firmware then update to kitkat but am a little iffy which firmware will work when trying to update up to 4.4.
anyone have experience on kitkat coming from C6906 14.1.G.2.257 Generic CA 1276-7484_R7A, and does root work?
Thanks in advance

You will never retain root while updating through PC Companion

Hello XDA
I recently flashed the Australian 4.2.2 onto my Xperia Z (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280329) however I notice it is displaying "4.1.2" on my phone details instead of "4.2.2". Is it because the ROM I downloaded was 4.1.2? It also says that my firmware is up to date, yet displays 4.1.2.

I'm sorry, I don't actually know what the widgets screen actually looks like. Can you post a picture please?
I'm starting to feel that my version is in fact 4.1.2 after looking around for a while because it is .253, do Sony or other companies who make Android phones release firmware updates for Generic Unbranded firmware later than for phones with built in firmware from Vodafone etc?
if your firmware is .253 then you are definitely on 4.1.2.
The xda thread you linked to is also the same. So far only Optus has released 4.2.2 (which is .423)
You need to flash the FTF using the latest flashtool. Its v9.11 i believe.

you are most likely on the old fw which is 4.1.2.
Here is a tutorial on how to flash FTF files
if you have a model of C6603 Flash this ftf file [STOCK ROM][FTF] Xperia Z (C6603) v4.2.2 10.3.A.0.423 Generic ES (Unbranded/Spain)
if you have a model of C6602 Fash this ftf file [STOCK ROM][FTF] (C6602) v4.2.2 10.3.A.0.423 Generic TW (Unbranded/Taiwan)

I've got a C6602 model but I have installed C6603 firmware. Can I still update my phone without doing it manually?

connect your device to your computer and try using Sony PC Companion or Sony Update Service. I have no clue will it work, but it should. If not then flash one of the FTF files above.
the links are below in my signature.
I flashed my Xperia ZR from 4.2.2 to 4.1.2 (C5503_10.1.1.A.1.310_GLOBAL-LTE.ftf) found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2384512
But now the phone itself nor the pc companion software is not offering me an update to 4.2.2 firmware.
When I first got the phone then pc companion automatically offered an update to 4.2.2 but not anymore.
Is there an easy fix to get the OTA update working? thanks!
First of all, why did you flash from 4.2.2 back to 4.1.2??
Well... following the same thread in your link, you can manually flash it back to 4.2.2 when your OTA is not working.

i wanted to root 4.1.2 and then get it updated to 4.2.2 while keeping the root.
anyway i already have manually flashed to 4.2.2 but still waiting for a possible solution.
and i really would like to know the reason why C5503_10.1.1.A.1.310_GLOBAL-LTE.ftf did not offer me any updates.
You can follow the instruction in this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2392865
No promises though!
Hi,
I have a ZR with the unmodified stock 4.1.2 firmware. PC companion still hasn't offered the 4.2.2 update for me. The customization region of my phone is generic Hong-Kong. Has anybody with the Hong-kong region got the update yet?

I had the Hong Kong version until a day ago I didn't receive the new update and couldn't be bothered waiting so was forced to try out flash tool and flash the Nordic version of 4.2.2

is it true that the pc companion never actually checks the actual firmware version of your phone but instead relies on the data stored in a server, which keeps record of your phones mac address and the latest upgrade done to that phone with that specific mac address?
since my first upgrade was from 4.1.X to 4.2.2 through pc companion then the server stored information stating that my phone with MAC address xyzc has been upgraded to 4.2.2 and wont offer any more upgrades unless something newer than 4.2.2 is released. even if i downgraded back to 4.1.2- according to the server's records my phone "was flasehd" and still "must be" using version 4.2.2.
atleast that is what i read somewhere
Anyone in India get the 4.2.2 update yet?

Try PC companion. As of yesterday I have tested the 4.1 versions of HK, RUSSIA, GLOBAL firmware to see which ones will receive 4.2 update. Only RUSSIA firmware updated to 4.2 via PC Companion.

Can you please let me know how to find out what firmware my phone has? I think mine was imported from Hong Kong but I'm not sure. I didn't even know there was a global version. There was a post somewhere with some service menu commands to list firmware but that was just a string of numbers, I could not tell that it was global or Nordic or hong Kong... Thanks!

Hello everyone,
I am having some trouble rooting my Sony Xperia Z1. I flashed firmware 14.1.G.2.257 which is what I am now running so that I could root my device. I downloaded vroot and tried to root it but I had no luck. It keeps coming up with an error. Am I using the wrong firmware or am I doing something wrong? I'm not sure. Any suggestions are appreciated. I have USB debugging enabled by the way.
Thanks.
You have to first downgrade to .534 root that firmware then ota update to 257. I used central europe tft and i got ota update.

Why thank you! Do you happen to have links? Google is my best friend, but if you have direct links, that would be very helpful.
EDIT: I rooted it now but how do I do an "OTA update" to 257? :s
EDIT2: Found it. Thanks, Google and thank you Jimvest. All good now.
Np =)

I have a C6606 from T-Mobile, as anyone with this knows, T-Mobile is the only one that didn't get a KitKat update, its still on 4.3.
Can I run the official 4.4.4 update from the C6603 on this?
If I can just flash C6603 4.4.4 rev2 firmware on this, is it possible to use the 4.4.2 towelroot exploit as the 4.4.4 rev1?
The method I'm referring to is where you flash firmware 10.5.1.A.0.283 (4.4.4 rev1), then flash only the kernel from firmware 10.5.1.A.0.230 (4.4.2), use towelroot to root, then flash the 283 kernel back and enjoy 4.4.4 rooted and factory.
Does that still work with the latest firmware 10.5.1.A.0.292 (4.4.4 rev2)?
Do you made it?
I have the same phone and I want to do the same, it worked?
some how i don't think this will work... Does the C6606 have the exact same hardware?
search and search and search..link not working......tired. I want to downgrade my C6906 (5.1.1) to kitkat to and then reinstall lolipop 5.1.1 but rooted this time.
I am looking for a C6906 kitkat ftf link that work.
the XZDR instaler that will work with my unit. (bootlocked and cannot be unlock)
something I am missing?
got the rooted lolipop, flashtool installed and working
