I'm definitely a noob here, but I've been lurking for over a year, researching, and finally made an account.
I'm stuck with AT&T for awhile. Like most other sensible people on the planet, I want a Droid 3. I thought all hope was lost until I just recently heard that someone finally cracked (rooted) the thing and there are already several custom ROMs out, to my understanding..? Like the Steel Droid ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278056
Does the Steel ROM allow a Droid 3 to work on AT&T networks?
I also read that Negri Electronics is selling custom Droid 3's that work on AT&T's 3G networks, but it's $600.
Is there any hope of getting a D3 with AT&T, or do I have to stick with my beat-up (but still functional) old Tilt 2?
And Yes I searched, but the Droid 3 Root thing is so new there's not much info on it yet.
I have heard of people successfully using a D3 on AT&T, I think you need to unlock the SIM for US networks somehow. Loading a rom like Steel Droid won't make any changes that will allow you to use it on AT&T though.

Hrm... Crap. So currently the only way to get one for AT&T is via Negri Electronics? No one has heard of any other way? 0.o
I don't suppose there's any other phone that can compete with the D3 as far as specs and a full QWERTY keyboard, huh? Bummer, big time
I'm coming from a VZW TP2 and i know people used it on Tmobile and other GSM networks by unlocking the SIM. The way I did it was by calling Verizon and telling them I was going out of the country and they did it for free on the phone, I'm not sure how to do it if you're already on another network or don't activate it with Verizon first (For free). But that's definitely what you should look for, once the SIM is unlocked it should work anywhere as long as you enable roaming.

Simlock or not you can use the droid 3 anywhere in the world but not in the us.
No matter if you use the verizon sim or any other sim.
To do it you need the so called band unlocking which is currently unavailable for the droid 3 and when and if will be, will require a good amount of money.
In short if you need the phone buy a milestone 3/Xt860
...but keep in mind, that while root and recovery are a go for the XT860, there's no custom ROMs working as of yet.
It'll come though.

Did a little research, but just to be clear, the Milestone 3 (aka the XT860) is the Canadian version of the D3, released by Bell, correct?
And since it already works in North America, could I simply buy one and use it on AT&T as-is? Or would it also need some sort of unlocking?
Correct
Given the price should be an unlocked phone, ready to be used anywhere in the world US included.
Thanks, I almost bought an XT883 a few days ago, that would have been terrible. Stupid Verizon and their locked-down phones.
[UPDATE]
Alright. Thanks to you guys' help and support, I averted a financial disaster and a raft of headaches/psychological meltdowns. I just ordered:

Can't wait to get my hands on a D3! My first truly new phone since I bought my Motorola SLVR 5 years ago, with its amazing, first-of-its-kind ability to play up to a whopping 100 iTunes songs on its giant 512mb MicroSD card.
I'm in Hawaii, waiting on a phone being shipped from Canada though, so it'll be a couple days
Thanks again for your patience guys, especially Solutor, your advice really made a difference. I clicked the Thanks button for you.

You are welcome.
Hi, I am currently using Milestone 2 (non-us Droid 2) and I have been using this phone for around a year and a half. I have rom the phone, overclocked it, themed it. I have juiced every drop of my phone out.
Now the "C" button on my keyboard is a bit messed up, i need press down hard so that the phone can sense me.
Now I am 50/50 about the Droid 4 ( Milestone 4), I am a huge MotoFan, and I am a keyboard fan, leaving me no choice but choosing the Dorid series. But the current Droid 4 is only 1.2 dual core, 1785 mah battery, and rubbish screen, worst of all, I am from Hong Kong, tho the Droid 4 is a world phone, I am not sure if the phone will work in Hong Kong, a GSM city.
So will the Droid 4 work in Hong Kong, and should I get the Droid 4? (Or wait for Droid 5)

The Droid 4 currently cannot be used on GSM/UMTS networks. It does have a Qualcomm MDM6600 chip which technically can support both CDMA/EVDO and GSM/UMTS networks, but you'd have to flash a different baseband which I don't think is possible at this point.

Sorry to hear that Unfortunately there is no way to use the Droid 4 on GSM/UMTS networks at the moment.
I found some successful cases in forum from China
But need to order the unlock code
Anyways i would order my xt894 and have a try
If i got luck i will tell the buddies on this forum~
Got a link for the order? My Droid 4 is coming in this week. It's at customs now. I live in NL, so trying once wouldn't hurt me.

VZW should unlock it for you if you call and ask. I think you have to have already met some minimum account duration and payment requirements.
I too am waiting for the GSM firmware. With VZW's CDMA roaming, I can go to 40+ countries, but not to Europe.
I finally got my droid4 in hand and confirm it got gsm function is working in Hong Kong!
However, I got it with GSM ALREADY UNLOCKED so I cannot tell you how to unroot it
But probably involve flashing chinese rom

I got it from a china auction website
I would like to post the info, any hot-key could take a screenshot in motoblur?
Previous key in milestone3 doesn't work here
And any way to map the 'alt key' back on the physical keyboard?
The info I gathered so far hinted the unlocking involve flashing another rom, *#*#2468#*#* and unlock the device with unlock code, but I got my phone unlocked out of box so I couldn't test it
i found this http://www.buyonsalecheap.com/motor...ocked-verizon-new-without-contract_p1190.html but it dose not look like a trustworthy site and its the only GMS Driod 4 i could find.
could you link to the site you got it from?
i dont know anything bout motoblur i have never owned a Motorola, but i do know you can take screens with the android SDK

Do not buy from that site. Its a scammers site. Not trustworthy at all.
@Disablewong I'm very curious. I too am waiting and trying to use the GSM radio on the Droid 4. Where did you get it? What rom do you use?
Do you know where I can buy an unlock code? I'm not a Verizon customer so they cannot help me. And I tried some 3rd party unlock sites, but none of them was able to generate an unlock code for me.
Thanks in advance.
There is a way to know if this device is a real Motorola Droid 4? I found some weird links about it[1]
[1] www indianexporters com / Motorola-DROID-4-XT894-unlocked-mobile-phone-sell-111965.html (I can not post links yet)
VMU,
Which ones did you try? I want to try this one because of their success with Razr and Atrix. Not so sure about a ferund though when they do not succeed.
http://sim-unlock.net/simlock/New_Motorola/Droid 4/
I tried mobile2mobile, networkunlockcodes, and unlockitnow.
I also found the site you mentioned. But before I contacted them before I place an order. If they can guarantee that they can unlock the Droid 4 I'll submit my imei.
Waiting for a reply.
Guys, will you expect the phone will work as GSM after unlocking? Or you will use it as CDMA?

Hello Guys,
I used to be a milestone 2 user, coming from a milestone one here in the EU.
My milestone 2 gave out and I when it did I was forced to use another brand/phone.
However, I'm currently in the US and I was wondering whether there are any droid 4's I could buy over here that would work in Europe. Obviously this means the D4 would need to be free of sim lock and it would need to be able to take a sim card from europe.
Any advise? Workarounds? other places where one could get hold of a D4 able to work in the EU?
It goes without saying that I don't want to pick up a US prepped phone tied to a crazy expensive US operated dataplan in the EU.
TiA,
Cheers!

Most D4s come factory unlocked, you just have to make sure you carrier isn't on the bad list. Chances are if Verizon partners with your carrier at home, you may be out of luck. There is a UK thread going on here, take a look through the older threads. Keep in mind, LTE functionality isn't available on this phone outside of the USA.

Hey! This is my first post in XDA (although a lurker for some time!).
A friend of mine living in the United States shipped me his old Droid 3, which has SIM card slot. I wanted to use it with my Spanish GSM network, and I've reading this post about it, and some other related posts, so I came to the conclusion that the phone needs to be unlocked with a purchased code always, but now I'm not sure what's next.
At first I don't plan to do anything, since I've read on some posts that you just need to purchase an unlock, others say you need to edit the build.prop to get proper signal indicators and the global mode enabled, others say you have to flash a stock radio firmware... so the only clear decision is that I have to buy an unlock code for the phone. So I'd like to know about the experiences of other European users using the Verizon branded Droid 3, if that's possible! Thanks!

Hi there,
I live in the Netherlands and bought a Droid 3 xt862 Verizon branded a few months ago from a private person in the States. I bought an unlock code through the internet, a word of advise beware of buying from just anyone and look for lots of good feedback on the seller.
After inserting my Dutch SIM card the phone asked for the unlock code so I typed the unlock code into the Droid 3 tapped ok and my Droid was unlocked. The Droid 3 is in perfect working order ever since and I use it all the time. By the way I haven't gotten around to rooting the Droid 3, just to let you know .
I hope this reply helps out a bit, good luck and have fun with your Droid 3, it's a great phone.
unlock4moto worked for both my D3s. Good site!

I go out of rooting my phone a while ago and went to go root my G6 to find out that it's not rootable. Moreover recently I found that Verison is blocking the bootloader on pretty much all of its phones. I looked at the Note 9 and I really like it but I want to be able to root it and everything. is there a way that I can get a note 9 and use it with full functionality (IDC about the Samsung pay and that stuff though, just the speeds and connectivity) in the US. i am willing to change carriers to Tmobile, but I have also heard something about the N960F not able to use band aggregation in the US. If i want to root and have a good phone will i have to go all the way back to the nexus 6p or are there other modern phones that can do this?

You can get the SM-N9600 and root that phone. Then you will be able to get wifi calling and 4g+ with it also being rooted. This version is th HK one. I have this version and so far everything is good and I like the purchase I made. You can find some on Swappa (which is where I bought mine for $715).
Do please though research on which phone you prefer and what root options are available for that phone.

We haven't been able to unlock bootloader on Samsung devices for a few years now.
I should say US Samsung devices. I meant to clarify that.
