Hi,
I have been using both stock, CM builds and other after market roms from my xperia x10 mini pro days. Now, I own an xperia mini pro and xperia z. I have installed various kitkat aftermarket roms on my xperia z. I installed the latest cm11, From here I could not change any contents on my SD card. Within the phone I cannot copy to or delete from the sd card. I tried all file managers including the ones with root permissions. I removed the sd card and tried direct copying. The fun is copying will be succesful. But once I unmount and remount the card, the contets wouldnt have changed. I try to format the card. It will get formatted but once I unmount and remount all the previous contents are intact. I the flashed back 4.3. There again the issue persisted.
I had the same issue with my xperia mini pro and cm11. Since then this is my second sd card(32 gb on mini pro and 64 gb on xperia z). I know there are certain issues with kitkat and sd cards. Can anybody please throw some light on resolving this issue. I am a rom hopper and I dont like to be cornered with these issues.
But strangely, I never had any issues with pabx's build.

You should ask in that specific thread of the rom you're using instead of here.
I think this is a generic issue
I think this is a generic issue. It eminates from the point that the majority of the after market roms are using bits from the CM project, Thanx for the reply. What I want to know here is does kitkat do anything to the sd card which cannot be washed away after even attempting a format?

Did you try to format the sd card with your pc? Does the pc even recognize it correctly?
If you have problems while on a stock rom, then I suggest that you backup your data, then format the SD card with the SD Association tool - https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/
If possible, you should do this via a card reader/slot and not while it's in the phone.
If you still have problems, then your card may be faulty.

Yes, the format was tried on pc
The format operation was tried both on windows and Arch Gnu/Linux. I can add or delete a file. But after remount, the changes are gone. It is like I am having a write once DVD.
sorry for resurrecting this thread but has anyone found a way to fix the issue?
Just like the others, I encountered the problem after I downgraded from Kitkat to Jellybean. I have tried formatting my 64Gb Transcend micro SD card using various softwares. Some fail to format midway. Some indicate that it has been successfully formatted but upon checking, the contents are not removed.
Due to a policy change in Kitkat it is, for most apps, not allowed to change the content on the SD card. To fix this, root the device and install de SDFix from the play store.

Do I have to root it using Jellybean or Kitkat?

Hey guys,
Im new to the forum but ive been following quietly for a while. I thought id make my first post, a new thread because ive been having an issue which i dont know is common or not but has been killing me for the past 4 days and i havent been able to find a solution.
BASICALLY,
My MicroSD 64GB (Master UHS-1 Class 10) has all of a sudden decided not to work on me and here is the problem.
First let me establish a few things.
-> MicroSD reads on any computer (im running mac)
-> MicroSD was formatted on my Xperia Z and has been working for the last 3 weeks
-> I have ejected the MicroSD several times without properly unmounting it from the phone (being honest)
-> Files can be read and copied onto the computer
-> Files can be copied onto the MicroSD but once ejected from the computer and reinserted, the files disappear. Its as if the files that are existing on the MicroSD are locked there forever.
-> Files can be deleted and do appear to have been deleted, however once the MicroSD is reinserted into the computer, (Via usb or SD reader), the files just appear again.
Problems:
-> I am trying to format the MicroSD using Disk Utlilty on Mac but to no avail. i have tried every single option and i have even used SD formatter 3.1 which is a third party program. On mac, all i get is an error saying "Mac OSX was unable to repair the disk" -"you can still open or copy files on the disk, but you cant save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat as soon as you can."
-> windows gives me the same error. in windows format. I can do exactly the same i.e copy and paste files onto the MicroSD which disappear, i can delete files which reappear and when i attempt to format using even MS-DOS's "DiskPart" utility, which is supposed to be epic, it still does not work..
I just want to reformat the disk and kill everything on it and return it back to normal.
Ive looked at so many searches and read so many web pages, forums, blogs, everything but i could not find a solid solution. Nothing Works.
MY FINAL PROBLEM!!
Once the Micro SD is placed into the Xperia Z, a message pops up saying "preparing micro SD card.. Checking Errors" This message DOES NOT disappear for hours. ive had it on for half a day and it drained my battery to 26% before i realised that it was killing my battery. it was on standby aswell. I have an old 2GB microsd which i used and the message pops up for about 1 second before it disappears.
This is my problem. I cant use the MicroSD on my Xperia Z anymore. The phone just wont read it. It will prepare it for the next century.
If anyone has any suggestions to how i can get these haunted files off my MicroSD and get it back in working order id really appreciate your help!!
Thanks!!
FAT32, NTFS or exFAT?
Running stock or rooted?
I'm running third party software (paragon), and using NTFS.
17gb bluray movie worked without stuttering, and overall seems stable.
I'm rooted.
Thanks benziii for your reply!
My Xperia Z is rooted and with unlocked bootloader. I think it may have something to do with corrupted files? because of removing the MicroSD without unmounting it all the time perhaps? or i really dont know.
By the way its formatted as MS-DOS (FAT) at the moment =/ cant seem to do anything still. or change it.
Tired formatting in different format with no luck
& im trying to get access to a windows computer atm because i find there are many more third party apps on windows than there is on mac.
My Xperia Z is unlocked and rooted and I am using Sandisk 64gb class 10 sd card and no problems. But its just me!
If I were to guess I'd say that the card has been corrupted. It may work with a low level format, or it may not.

1. Removing the card without unmounting it is seriously asking for problems.
2. My Xperia Z documentation says it supports up to 32gb cards. i.e. not 64gb.

Perhaps, but it's doubtful they can do anything you can't do on your Mac or Linux.
On OS X, you can run the following two items from the terminal as root:
1. fdisk
2. newfs ((I assume you want "dos" or "exfat" file system types).
Just, you know, make sure you get the drive right and don't nuke your Mac's hard drive by accident!
I thought max size was 32gb also

Officially it is, but I've seen 64gb cards referenced as working many times. I think it's just a matter of the phone not working to SDXC specifications. Though that's hardly a good reason, as everything else on the phone is first class...
Everyday is a learning day.

It seems your SD card is dead My SXZ broke one SD card (32GB Transcend Ultimate, 10 class) in the first week of using - now it is recognized as 1 GB unknown disk with RAW filesystem. So I had to buy new one (32 GB Sandisk Ultra, 10 class).
My phone just loses SD sometimes and doesn't recognize it till restart. Before installing .434 firmware update I met this problem very often. Now (after installing .434) I meet it sometimes when open stock Camera app. I think that is firmware bug, so waiting for next updates.

I was doing some research and realised that before a MicroSD card dies, it will write protect the data before the MSD card dies so that you can back up any data. you can delete files and copy files but they will autodelete themselves after the card is remounted. thats exactly the problem that i have.. oh well thanks guys. i sent the card back for replacement!! hopefully next one i wont screw over too.
Lesson learnt. never eject sd card without unmounting on phone first!! thanks guys!

Interesting.
I bought a 32GB Transcend class10 MicroSD card from Amazon at the same time as I ordered my Xperia Z.
I did manage to copy around 10Gb of music to it, using Sony Bridge For Mac before it was suddenly 'disconnected' part way through the copy process (I was filling it to 25Gb with music from an iTunes Playlist).
After that I tried it in the Mac directly and a Windows laptop, neither of which would write to the MicroSD card, some of the files could be read, but not many. While SDFormatter claimed to have formatted the card, the files (or their names at least) were still visible, further attempts at formatting the card (with SDFormatter) claimed it was write protected.
Putting it directly into the Xperia Z would cause it to reboot after 2-3 minutes.
I returned the card to Amazon. If it had worked on my Mac (or laptop) I might have kept it, but working on nothing made it useless.
I am currently using an old 8Gb MicroSD card that came with (I think...) the Sony Arc I had a few years back and it seems to work perfectly. I'm loath to buy another 32Gb card to find that it doesn't work.
I assume there is no reason why the Xperia Z shouldn't work with a 32Gb MicroSD card? Do I need to ensure that I get a different class of card, or is a class 10 card suitable? Is it just not compatible with the Transcend card?
Any suggestions you have will be most helpful.

same thing happens to me! files remove and reappear ! "chkdsk /f command" in windows shows that one of my files is cross-linked! here is the message:
\App\install\.goutputstream-5JN7ZW is cross-linked on allocation unit 1181239.
i i tried formatting with windows paragon linux (fdisk,mkfs.msdos,gparted,testdisk...)even i ran windows 98 and ran scandisk for fixing cross-link issue ! but till now no luck.
can anyone help me with this
thanks in advance!
in my opinion there is no way to repair this, just throw it in trashbin.. ive tryd almost all..
I'm in the middle of an RMA with SanDisk right now. It seems that once the sd decides to be read only to protect itself, it's done. Replacement is the only option.

i have the same problem with my 32gb sandisk sdcard,Tried almost everything and nothing worked.
hello
i have a problem here. i have recently bought sony xperia t, i haven't rooted it or anything. it runs stock sony jelly bean. so the problem is that sometimes when i boot my phone, in the notification bar, it says preparing sd card - and it just doesn't go away (so i can't use my data, can't listen to music, watch photos etc.). and when that's up there, it slows down my phone and it starts lagging.
i have a 32 GB sd card, class 10, and i have 2 partitions on it - 1 is 27GB, normal for storage, the other one was for my previous phone (xperia mini), so that could move all apps to sd card
so i don't know if this effects something or not, but when i try to delete 2nd partition, the MiniTool Partition Wizard reports an error.
so please guys help, i have searched all over the internet and i haven't found anything, about mmy problem.
thank you all in advance
Make a copy of your files from sdcard to your PC first. Then wipe sdcard. Afterwards, put back all your files again.
I myself have class10 32GB sdcard with 2 partitions, 2GB ext4 and the rest fat32. Using link2sd app and so far no problem. I'm using Doomlord's custom kernel.
Tapatalked from my bricked TX
And if that doesn't help (previous post) try to put it in a other phone. If the same problem happens, your sd card is faulty. If it works, probably your sd reader from your phone is faulty. But first try a other micro sd. Try to eliminate possible causes.
Sent from my LT30p, 4.1.2 stock, DooMKernel v5,root access, unlocked bootloader.
OK i've copied all the files form SD card on my computer (deleted them from SD card) and then copied back to SD card only the files i needed (eg. music, photos etc. wthout app folders and backups i had on my previous phone (xperia mini)), then i put the SD card back into my phone and at first it didn't work, but then i restarted my phone and it works as it should work.
thank you for your help

Yes, I tried
Xperia T or TL users may have experience this. Their phones are known to kill SD Cards. Try connecting your SD Card without your phone.

hi dani
my XV has this kind of problem and my partner also have same problem too, XV have killed your SD card and your SD card may not able to be read in ur PC too, either u need to exchange a new SD card (of course change with under warranty) or go without using SD card. i have no idea why it can happen, 1st SD u use in XV may have this kind of problem, 2nd SD (new) inserted to XV will go fine.
(not sure whether it is a bugs or not)
I had a corrupt sd card in my V. I put it in the PC, it asked me if I wanted to format it and I said no.
Then I ran chkdsk -F on it, and it fixed everything and saved all my files.

hmm, mine 1 totally not able read the corrupted sd card, so change under warranty
Maybe my issue was slightly different. On my V, the message was "Damaged Sd card" and it would not mount on the phone.
On the computer, when I plugged in the Sd card and tried to navigate to the drive, the computer would only prompt me to format it. I couldn't view any files.
But I could say "no" to the prompt, open command prompt, and from c: run chkdsk on the sd drive.
my sdcard now completly unreadeable , both from PC and phone ...
Recently in my z3 compact, I enabled my sd card as 64gb memory class 10 primary,
I thought that now everything would work out because I was solving the serious problem of the 16GB of internal memory that I think very little.
But I have a problem, I can not use the camera, it says that it can not access the memory, even alternating between internal memory (which would be the sd card) and the sd card option that is disabled.
I tried to install another apk from the camera, to try to solve this problem, and always says that the install failed.
How do i solve this, as this is what prevents me from using my cellphone in its full functioning.
It is with android 6.0.1 official sony

Try using the SD card in an other phone may be a faulty SD card.
If the SD card is fine, try re-flashing the firmware, there is many guides available.

What makes me curious is that devices like xperia m5 that use the same method, function works,
Something that in my z3 did not happen.
I saw that my camera version is still 1.0.B.1.10
And i saw that they ported the sony android 7 z5 camera
Would it work, try to install this camera via recovery?:
I would like to know if anyone has already tested
Because the m5 I mentioned should have this update

All I can say is try it yourself.
There is no physical switch. I've tried many application software in windows and linux but yet still not working. I think the last time I can modify the mircro sd card content is where I make deletion and copying on the phone mode. After I formatted the phone to, the micro sd card is no longer content-editable. I've tried format but not working. Before I format the phone, its OS is lolipop and I upgraded to nougat. Lost the ability to copy file after upgrading. Downgrading back still not working

What phone are you using, what's the model?
Were you rooted on Lollipop?
If so did you reroot after upgrading to Nougat?
Are you on a custom ROM or have a custom recovery?
What's the file system currently on the MicroSD card?
What file manager application are you using that is not allowing you to copy/edit files on the Micro SD card?
Are sure nothing can write to the Micro SD card, have you tried loading a Terminal app to get things command line, or another file manager application?
Last thing I can think of, is can you take the Micro SD card out and put it into a computer and see if it will format?
Could be randomly the SD card just died when you were upgrading? Usually when my cards go, it's around when I'm doing an OS load... For whatever reason. I've killed 3 Micro SD cards in the last 7 years.

I use samsung galaxy y s5360. I did rooted my device by upgrading to lolipop. I delete all partition when I downgrading back to lolipop from nougat. I think the system is in the phone itself. Any file manager I try they say success but after I double checked the files gone, I'm on custom ROM. I have taken the micro sd out and format it in windows env or linux env with higher permission. If the microsd card when upgrading then there's nothing I can do?

Do you have a custom recovery like TWRP? Are you able to boot into the custom recovery and use the file manager in there to see if it can read and write. That's outside of the OS and if it can write to the Micro SD then that means the phone is good hardware wise. If not, try formating inside of the recovery then try file manager. Again o ly if you have a custom recovery will this work.
If you're able to write to the Micro SD card in recovery, then maybe the issue is with the custom ROM? Have you tried going back to the factory firmware and see if the SD card works? That's probably where I would go to start first, since downgrading you're still having problems.
If you've pulled it out and put it in a computer, you can format and write files to it... That's a good sign that it can be written to, at least it means the Micro SD card is function.

My apologies I thought it was successful on the PC.
If you try it in a computer and you can not do anything to the cars, then more than likely there is something wrong with the card. At this point I would try another Micro SD.
If it was encrypted you would not be able to see any files on it in recovery. Plus if you are in your recovery (Clockworkmode) and not able to format/partition the Micro SD in there, problems.
Because with the encryption the phones do, you can still delete partitions and repartition and format the Micro SD. Would lose all of your files of course, but would make the card usable again. Trust me I've done that a few times, encrypted then the phone would crash... And the card was locked until repartitioned and formated.

Sounds like it from everything you tried. Wish I had better news. But I have found when you can not repartition the card, especially on a PC, it's done for. Whatever the reason. That's why I I ly deal with Samsung or Kingston branded cards. Those are the ones I've had the longest and haven't failed, being used on multiple devices over the years.
