Any one having trouble getting there Google voice to work on the captivate
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
No problems here, working great.
Mine works great, although it took me FOREVER to get it to work correctly and set up.
Also I notice the speaker volume when trying to play messages through speaker phone is horribly low.
Yeah I had problems at first. I got a phone number with my name in it, but it didn't have a location and no one could call me. I had to pay 10$ to switch my number to a local one but its all good now.
Also, doesn't make calls on my wifi b/c internet keeps dropping, but I don't blame it. My wifi sucks.
You have to go on the google voice website and activate it

Same here, the message volume is so low you really cant hear it. Other than that everything works for me.
Wrong person when hit voice mail...
I've posted this question in Google's Help area, but I almost never get replies on messages there. Trying here.
When someone forwards to voicemail (Google VM), the recorded name that plays is not mine. I have recorded my name again; played it back on the WEB, and it is me; but if I dial my phone and go to VM it is a different person that says the recorded name. To answer the first obvious question, I am sure we are using the right number
I did see in the Google help section that someone fixed that problem by disabling Google Voice on their phone and re-enabling it.
Interestingly, I do have the Voice Mail Carrier in my phone set to 'My Carrier', which would be AT&T. I"m not sure of the significance of changing that. My presumption is that if it rings long enough it may go to AT&T voice mail instead of Google Voice mail. But in the end, I don't believe that has anything to do with my problem.
But even though I don't think this is part of my problem, I did try to set in my phone to send voice mail to Google Voice. When it went to the network it comes back with message "Voicemail number change unsuccessful. Please contact yoru carrier if this problem persists."
I guess if I can come up wiht correct settings that will be helpful. Everything I find in the Google help for setup is about setting it up on the web, and not the phone.
Later I found that you can enable/disable Google Voice Mail on your phone from the Google Voice Mail web site by dialing numbers into your phone. I have tried that twice now, and it still is playing the wrong name . ( I am confused about the setting mentioned above on the phone).
So, any suggestions on clearing up this problem?

AGREED! I can't stand the volume of the voicemail!!!
On my post for my problem(above a couple posts), from Google Help Group, I had someone select it as "Answered", and pointed it to a long list of questions, but no answer. I think they must be trying to rack up "I answered it" points or something.
GV seems to be pretty buggy. I may abandon it.
Well, I find using Google Products can be very frustrating. Zero support from Google, and if it is something the community has no idea how to fix, you are SOL.
Not getting any answers on this anywhere.
I had the same problem when setting up my Aria, before I got my Captivate. It would not change the forwarding numbers. I had to change the forwarding number manually on the phone. Settings > Call Settings > Voice Calls > Call Forwarding. (When I got the Captivate I did not have to set up again, AT&T stores the forwarding settings) It also took me a while to get it straight between the difference of the number I forward to, and the number I call when I want to listen.
All in all I thought the Google Voice was a pain to set up, and not as easy to set up as I expected for a Google product. But it does offer features that the iPhone Visual Voicemail did not, like transcribing the message, etc.
I actually would like to use some of the features. But I am pretty frustrated with the bugs. Well, at least, this one bug that I can't get an answer on.
Another bug I experienced, assuming I understand correctly, is that if a 'known' contact calls, it won't ask for the name. But I found the same contact calling me during testing would experienced inconsistently that it would, or would not ask.
If I can just get the darned other person's name from being played when it goes to VM, I'll be able to experiment more.
Oh, one other thing that is happening. Today, I called my Google number, just to see if it had possibly corrected itself. Interestingly it also ran my home phone too, which I had turned off.
So, it just seems not ready for prime time.
So here's my story. A couple of weeks back I had started to notice that my phone wasn't ringing when people were calling me. Through a bunch of troubleshooting found out that it seems to be my google voice account that is causing my calls to go directly to google voice. I also use google voice on my tablet as it is a lot nicer to do stuff on the bigger screen. When i looked under the settings found there was something about (Sorry this is weird) "dogfood" settings. When i clicked on it it said something about sending feedback. I backed out from there. (A little freaked out as to what that might do.) Did not have this "setting" on the phone. Needless to say I un-installed wiped the tablet. Did the same with the hero. Put new roms on both and I would be able to receive calls for a short period of time. Then after a couple of calls it would start to send calls to voicemail again and I wouldn't be able to make calls out. So finally took google voice off of both the tablet and phone and disabled google voice and now I can make and receive calls.
My problem is really like google voice and want to use it. Anyway around this? Part of the reason that I'm asking is that I see Matt uses google voice too and was wondering if anyone else had been having this problem. I don't know if there is any other app that works similarly if anyone has any suggestions let me know.
Sorry for the long post but its kinda weird and didn't wanna post "Google voice f-ed my phone" and then have to walk everyone through the troubleshooting I had already done.
Thanks.
OK this is going to sound stupid and quite obvious but..in the phone app> menu>more>settings>do not disturb. Is that off or on?
I have been using G-voice for a while now and I have never had any issues. But I do have that "dogfood" under menu on the phone app.
I remember checking on that a few different times because I remembered reading about it some time ago. I don't think that was it. It seems like someone was having trouble with that on the with the aosp/cm thread a long time ago. I was concerned with that dogfood thing but maybe it is nothing. just google having fun.
I will check on the settings thing and flash to DX and test some more.
Thanks for the info. Will let you know.

I have a good question... When you installed Google Voice at the setup screen did you hit Next at the first screen that mentions Sprint integration? This is most likely what is causing it sir. Try reinstalling GV. Then open it. When that prompt comes up again hit Skip this time. Then following the remaining instructions. It should work perfectly after this.
It sounds like an initial setup issue. I would reinstall the application again. I've been using GV without any issues.
Actually got it working sorry for not posting back. After formatting boot, system, etc. It started working correctly. Must have been something that wasn't getting erased during the normal wiping between roms.
Google Voice issues.
I too had similar problems and finally thought of going into my actual Google account and changing how Google voice handles my calls. Works ever since I did that.

I don't know how many times I had to re-install GV on my and my friends' phones before remembering that trying to integrate with Sprint's Visual Voicemail just doesn't work..

You can integrate, but you might need to go into the actual account (not the app) and make sure that it is set up not to ring to the phone and not the internet number (or whatever that option is). My issue, besides every text message going through GV, was that I couldn't make an international call. I had a credit but it would never go through AND I couldn't make a call without it using GV even when I told it not to. Maybe I should have tried to go into the account to check on that too? LOL I went back to just using GV as my voicemail.
They fubarred this whole integration. In theory it sounded good but update after update they still don't get it.
So I got my one, when it was being activated in the store there was an error of some sort and it came down to a google voice issue. It was eventually fixed after a number of calls but I left with it working. I came home and loaded it up with my apps and re activated google voice so i can text from the web etc etc. It worked for a while but now my phone cannot make and recieve calls and texts, I only have data,
I called sprint last night they told me to wait until 2pm today even though he did not know what the issue was....its very fristrating, I get some recorded message from a guy saying that the number i called is not in service when I just called that number from another phone.
Has anyone else had any issues like this?
I would try disabling the integration on voice.Google.com and re enabling it once you confirm your phone works properly without it. I'm integrated and have never had this issue.

I'm not the most knowledgeable on this but Im about 99.9 percent sure there's no way either could cause your problem. Its something with the service programming either on googles end or sprints end.
This may be somewhat helpful I use Google voice for my voicemail.when I installed and provisioned it at the last step it gave me an error and said it could not save numbers but it does work!

I would de-integrate then call up Sprint and have them push a hands free activation to your phone. Wait 30 minutes then try re-integrating with Google Voice. I know this error happened frequently in the beginning with accounts that were integrated and then they switched phones without de-integrating first. I use the Sprint-GV integration and its why whenever I switch phones, I always de-integrate first, activate the new phone, then re-integrate with GV. Hope you get it figured out soon.
Thanks for the input. You guys were on the right track. My third hour long call got to the issue. Seemingly my phone wasn't fully provisioned and it was a network error but my activation of Google voice kicked my network completely out of sync. Still all a little strange but I'm back up and running. Hopefully when I re enable gvoice I won't get the same error. I was also told the first two people I spoke with should of seen this....I guess you gotta be lucky with who you get on the phone.

Hi, so here's what happened..
A couple days ago I was speaking to my uncle on my Nexus 4 sometime in the afternoon. No issues. Sometime that evening when I was driving in my car, I had my phone hooked to the car stereo's bluetooth handsfree system, as usual. I was trying to locate a place on Google Maps, the place I was driving to, when suddenly the music system stops playing and switches to handsfree mode.
I did not receive or make any call. I was just using Google Maps. I quickly go to the notifications tray to see if a call is ongoing in the background but I don't see anything. Then suddenly my uncle's voice comes on the car stereo's handsfree, the very same uncle I spoke to earlier in the day. The next thing I hear coming from the system is a replay of our conversation. His voice telling me something, exactly as he had earlier in the day. I freaked out for like 10 seconds not knowing what was going on.
My uncle hadn't called. The phone somehow connected to the car stereo on it's own and started replaying bits from my conversation with my uncle earlier in the day. Exactly as I remember. It had to have been recorded somewhere on the phone for it to be able to play it back like that.
I panicked and turned the car stereo off after a about 10 seconds. It kinda left me shaken for the whole evening.
I wanted to share this experience with the folks here just for everyone's information, and in the hopes of finding some sane explanation for it all..
I think you had a paranormal activity...
Just a joke. I really expect they are not recording conversations...
Do you have some app for call recording installed?
I would believe you if you told us exactly how this happend exactly, what type of dock or devices you have in your car, what type of apps you have in your phone and if you can find the conversation in your phone somewhere.
Great idea for a movie

Hehehe.. at first that's what I thought. And when I called a close friend of mine, who is an Android geek, his first question was 'how many have you had to drink'.
Jokes aside, I was absolutely myself, nothing in my system to impair my senses. It all happened exactly as I narrated up there. The audio from the conversation had to have still been on the phone for it to be played back hours later. Peculiar behaviour to say the least.

No, I don't have any (specific) app for call recording. Unless some other app has access to voice calls and is overreaching it's permissions??

I did share exactly how it happened.
No docks. Just connected via bluetooth, as I said. Both handsfree voice call and music streaming possible with the connection.
I have about 60 apps installed on my phone; after getting it that is (pre-loaded apps excluded). It would be quite a task to list them all. What do you mean by type of apps? All are from the Play store. Almost all of them are in the top 100 apps = very popular, trusted developer.
I shall go through them tonight and see if I can figure out which app might be doing this snooping.

Yeah, read about the spying this morning. It was in the papers and on The Verge, as you showed in your post.
But I am not living in the US nor am I on Verizon or any US mobile service provider. I do make calls to there a few times a month (one of which is a Verizon number), but this was a local call. I live in India.
Just wondering if anyone else has had an issue with Google Assistant telling you she can't do something until the device is unlocked? This just happened this morning when I told Google to set and alarm after browsing the web. I got the above response. Tried a restart, did it again. Retrained voice.. still did it. I finally just went to apps and cleared all data and cache for Google app. That seems to have worked. Weird issue to have. Phone was unlocked whole time.

this isnt an issue, this is on purpose because someone cant take your phone and do random stuff with it.

a work-around for this might be setting up "trusted voice" . Google Now, settings, voice, ok google detection, switch on "trusted voice". Sorry if you've done this already.
Ahh I'm having Google assistant issues it always seem to disconnected whenever I need it.. It does not recognize okay Google or even when I press the Google widget I have to go to chrome and google things there and voice does not work there... But people can hear me normal when I make phone calls or send whats app... And i disabled and reinstalled good app already
