[Q] HD+ Something wrong with internal storage after wiping - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just installed CM11-3/28, and it's working perfectly so far.
I was stuck at the cyanogenmod robort the first time, so I wiped data and installed again. It succeeded this time, but the internal storage is now only 27G in all. I guess the original data was somewhere on emmc, but no idea how to find and remove them.
Wish some help, thanks:)

Look in /data/media. You can remove most of the stuff there. Just leave the 0 and clockworkmod folders and their contents. The rest is old stock media files you probably do not want. But 27GB for internal storage is not bad since it does share the 32GB with the CM11 /system files and /data files.

Sorry, I didn't express myself clear. I can find it on my device but not after connecting to computer (don't know how to make nook a removable device instead of portable device, so that can show all stuff). The profile is over 3G so it would be hard to replace it on Nook.

You have really lost me on that comment. What are you trying to do by connecting to your computer? And what stuff are you looking for? And what do you mean by profile over 3G and need to replace? ???

So sorry for that><, actually I am confused myself. I have two questions.
The first is, total space of Nook should be 32G, but it now shows only 27G on my device, I wanna see if I can find out what the 5G is when connected to my computer. But under USB debuging mode, it still shows only internal storage(27G) instead of the whole emmc(32G). So, according to your first reply, is the 5G capacity system memory? If so, I don't need bother.
The second one is still about connecting to computer. I can visit data/media on my device but not on my computer, how can I get root access to Nook from my computer? (I found this, but haven't tried yet http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1587717)

I don't know why you think you need to have access to root with your PC when you have it directly on the Nook. Just use your root file manager to look at and delete any unnecessary files as I described earlier. Those locations are the only ones to get rid of. The rest are required so don't mess with them. And the maximum you will have will be about 28GB since the rest is used by files necessary to operate CM.

To back up leapinlar, even android in settings -> storage, shows 27.01GB total space for me. Not more. Like he said, that's all you get. Normally, any hard drive that says x amount will have less - the one is your computer does as well (normally). That's how it is.
While its really good your learning, like leapinlar, I'm getting the feeling like your pushing to crash the device. That's fine if your confident that you can bring it back from that or don't care or have someone else around to fix it. Don't let anyone stop you from learning but just remember - if it crashes - you'll have to deal with it.

For multi windows and bigger screen (no.
Thank you so much for answering!

'adb shell' is what you're looking for. It can be difficult to setup and get working for our device, but it's worth it in the long run.

OS or device

I'm not sure if this is even the right kind of forum to post this, but I imagine some dev has had this. When trying to move files onto my device using dolphin file manager on Ubuntu with KDE desktop the files never transfer. Anyone know why this is and if I can fix it. Is it a problem with ubuntu or with the device(xt860) It's a pain to switch to windows just to move a file. If a mod wants to move this thread that's cool. I wasn't sure where to post so here it went.

do you put the phone in mass storage mode?
is Ubuntu giving you any errors?
do you unmount it before removing the cable?
[edit] topic more suited for general. a mod will likely move it. [/edit]

Curious, do you have a memory card and reader available to test out? Imo try putting files on the card with the reader in ubuntu and see if you can read them on the phone, if not it's ubuntu.
Are you mounting the sdcard or internal storage?

With ubuntu and the phone in usb mass storage mode he would be auto mounting both, although that does bring the question to mind ... Are you sure you're looking at the right disk on the phone?

On the phone, internal storage is /sdcard, external is /sdcard-ext. Are you looking in the right place?

I tried it multiple times, and I checked both the internal and external sdcard each time, just to make sure I didn't drop it in the wrong one. I also tried moving it through terminal commands just to see if it was a glitch in the dolphin package. I also tried another package "file manager" or something. I'm not at home to check the name. Everytimenothing. I tried unmounting the drives, and just disconnecting. Everytime, nothing. Did it in windows, and copied over right away.
PS. I also tried both moving, and copying, both show it on the card, but when I disconnect, its not there

[Q] rooted Nook 2.0.4 external SD issue

Anyone else experiencing an issue with the micro sd slot after rooting? it wont read the cards, but it does notice when you remove an sd card. Is there a fix for that issue and has anyone else encountered it?

How do you know it is not reading the card? Have you looked at ext_sdcard to see of it is there?
And how did you root 2.0.4? Most folks get automatically updated to 2.0.5.

feel free to steal this little tip from me:
When starting from scratch after purposefully activating the 8 Boot Fail Safe, when it gets to the part where it's looking for an update, while its looking hold down "Power" and select OK to turn the device off interrupting the update process. When you turn it back on, you'll have to start the whole thing over again, but when it gets to the Update step it bypasses it thus cancelling out the 2.0.5 mandatory update. Now that you have 2.0.4 you can run your all-in-one and update cancel program before it has a chance to try updating again.
-Another helpful hint after reverting to stock firmware, turn off your internet until you run all the rooting software.
No I didn't check to see if it showed up in a root explorer.I'll check that out.
.....
Just checked and no it doesn't come up. I even removed and reinserted the microSD in question and still nothing. The little SD logo pops up on the screen (the big blue vector image one) but it never gets read in the device in system or root explorer.
Is there a way to fix it on test disk for windows?

I found it in mnt, man they really do everything strange on Nooks, haven't had one since the original Color. I see the problem. It's lacking any sort of permissions (read, write or anything). How do I get those to stick? since I've noticed things in Root tend to not stay permanent. and as for the PM, I'll get right on that. Thanks for all of your help.

SD cards do not let you make permission changes. I'm not sure why. Are you sure it does not have read write permissions? Can you create a file there?
Read my section on data structures in my HD/HD+ tips thread linked in my signature. It explains why the HD's are structured the way they are.
And thanks for working on the PM.

I think I figured it out. It seems that the cwmearly builds damage the sd cards, but once reflashed with the ones on your post it gets read just fine. I wanted it fixed since I couldn't find my other SD cards and had to resort into turning a 32gb into a 4gb card to install some zips (lame) and I wanted to get it back to its 32gb glory. So by rewriting my card with your 4gb image and putting it in my nook it got read and then I just formatted it on the nook and it was back to normal, though I had another card with the cwmearly img on it and it was going back to its old ways and repeated the previous steps and it was fine. so CWMearly was the problem.
I don't know how to make a clean back up without my data on it so this one will have my personal info (no credit card info, obviously) but maybe with your skills you can scrub it out of it. I'm not that well versed in this kind of stuff. I have an above average knowledge of android, but not any real knowledge of developing or ADB.

[Q] Unable to Backup to SD in CWM on Nook HD

Hello,
First off, thanks to e.mote for the CyanogenMod 10.1 for Dummies guide and to the work put in by verygreen, leapinlar and bokbokan. The guide was simple and straightforward, I installed CM10.1 and CWM (seemingly) without a hitch.
However, when attempting to do a baseline backup, I'm running into some problems. I've searched the forum overall and gone through pages and pages in the Nook sections and not found any real solution. On my 8GB HD, when rebooting to recovery and attempting to backup to an SD card, I'm having the following issues:
When CWM loads, I get a "warning: no file_contexts" message. I've read mixed things about whether this is significant or not and what to do to correct it.
When I go to backup and restore>backup it seems to backup to the SD card without a hitch (although it has shown differing amounts of free space on the cards whenever I've attempted this). But when I insert the card into my computer to copy the backup, the only thing on the card is a folder called "LOST.DIR" and all the space but 3.1MB is free. I've done this 3-4 times so far, with two different microSD cards (one 4GB, one 32GB). I've both checked it and formatted the card (in FAT32) on a computer running Windows XP and one running OSX. Same results on both every time.
At some point when attempting to do the backup, the screen of the Nook begins to flash/flicker and doesn't stop until I restart it.
The first time I tried to do the backup, after I tried to restart, it didn't boot back up and the power button was unresponsive. Possibly this was due to overheating? I plugged it into the charger and it started up on its own after about 10 minutes.
Anyone else encounter this? Any solutions. Obviously I want to be able to back things up. I just rooted the device this evening, so I'd rather to not have to go through the install process all over again rather than have a proper backup.
Thanks!

Ah, ok. That means you have the newest version which puts the backup on internal memory. If you look at the menu choices closely, you will see it says to internal sdcard and the other choice is to external sdcard. So you will not find the backup on your external card.

I'm confused on what files to actually download?!! any help please?
Advice please
kk so last night i had a go at the kit kat tutorial.
Think I got the right files in the end. (see attachment photo)
Managed to get CWM flashed on the 32gb micro SD and insert it into the Nook and reboot it into recovery.
Then i needed to back up stock OS to SD but it goes through the process but at the end it says no EXT SD found.
So it has the back-up on the internal memory which i cannot get off.
Why did it not back up to EXT SD?

That EXT SD it says it cannot find is not the external SD you are thinking of. It is looking for an old scheme not used anymore where apps sometimes were stored in an extra partition named that on the external SD. Your backup was probably stored on the external SD. It depends on which option you chose when you made it. If you chose the wrong option it might be stored on the internal memory. In any case it is easy to get it off.

[Q] NEWBIE-ISH????? Nook16G HD CM11M...Only Able to Use 1/2 Internal Memory

Hi guys!
Newb question that I'd never normally bother to post to the forums, would just buckle down and do the research myself. Sorta under the gun here tho, going on a trip very soon and want to use this device at optimum. Everything works Great! The thing is, I'm only able to access half my internal memory for storage. Perhaps I messed up during install? Wrong PIT? (can't remember if I used ODIN).
The question is.....is there a quick fix( perhaps using an ODIN PIT) or do I have to wipe everything and start fresh? No biggie, maybe someone can tell me where I messed up, provide a link, some help, info? I suppose I can wait 'till I get back and do due diligence, but would really like to clear this up before hand.
If anyone needs more info please ask
Thx XDA!
Odin is for Samsung devices, not the Nook. And probably your storage problem is because you did not delete your media files from stock and those files are now hidden in a folder you can't see. You can use a root file manager to see if that is the issue. Look in /data/media. If there are files there not in the /data/media/0 folder, those are left from stock. You can manually delete those to get your space back. And of course you know that you should not expect to see much more than 12GB on the 16GB device. The rest is used by the system.

Well, well..............this could be the case. It was given to me as a 16g and I rooted that and a samsung device over the Xmas holidays.
