I have a quick question hopefully somebody can answer.
I want to pick up a used HTC Hero (I found a good deal on one) but don't want to activate it to my cellular account. The only thing I want to do is use it on a Wi-Fi network for software testing. Can the Hero be used without first activating it to my cellular account (I know some phones such as the Pre pretty much require the phone to be activated to an account the first time you start it up from a factory reset)?
Thanks in advance.

Yeah you can use it without activating it. Only thing is it's gonna ask you if you wanna activate it pretty much everytime you reboot it (just click cancel). There's a way around it but I honestly don't remember off hand.
if you figure out a way to use voice and data without activating please let me know ! id like to save $1200 a year.
Thanks Asadullah.

I'm not going to mess with that at all. I just want a fairly modern Wi-Fi only Android device for testing.

Yes you cant definately do this I have ag1 one that I use to f around with and its not activated. If you run a custom rom you will not be asked to provision it and even if you are you can do it over wifi. You can use google voice and gmail to make calls with out ever having a phone connection, of course it will only work if you have a wifi connection.
Just google android setup with no service, alot of people have done this with there old g1's
Hello everyone,
I apologize in advance is this is a dumb question, i did my best searching but was unable to find an answer clear enough for me (being a noob to android tablets) to understand.
Currently i have the option to purchase a CDMA Galaxy tab 7" very cheap. I don't intent to activate it in any carrier and would only be using Wifi with the tablet.
Is this possible?
Any drawbacks of doing this compared to using a Wifi only tablet?
Can it be rooted like the Wifi only models and custom roms installed?
Thanks a lot.

There are a lot of us that picked up the Sprint Tab refurb, and use it solely on wifi.. all you have to do is put it in airplane mode, and turn the wifi back on..
Oh great, thanks a lot for the reply. I think ill go ahead and buy it tomorrow.
Would it be possible to flash with a Wifi only ROM and just forget about the CDMA capabilities of the tablet?

Nope. Can't do that.
You can run your tab with airplane mode turned on and with wi-fi only running. This will achieve exactly what you want and maximize battery life as well.
You can also just hold the power button until the menu pops up and select deactivate data instead of airplane mode. There are apps that need to find location such as maps and weather programs. If you tether on wifi while outside or driving, and you want to use GPS program, you're going to need to be tethered and have GPS on and have data disabled but still hearing the tower. Having it on assists the GPS to lock and get coordinates and map data. You're not using data for internet, you're using data in conjunction with GPS to have things like Google maps and say MapQuest or GPS testing programs.
Try getting a GPS lock in airplane mode. I don't think it will work. At first I thought it wasn't working but when I turned off data but allowed data for location purposes, the GPS programs came to life.
Thanks everyone for the information.
One last question before i go ahead and buy the tablet, i'm seeing only a couple custom roms for the CDMA devices, would i miss anything compared to the other models?

Not really. Ive tried out the ones that are available for CDMA and I dont see the advantage.
Its personal preference though. It might be important to you (and its definitely important to others)

I just got a brand new out of the box stock captivate, sgh-i897, i897uckb2, kernel version 2.6.32.9, froyouckb2. I have the mobile ap in wireless settings, but when I click I get a message saying not allowed. How what is my least invasive option of turning this on without paying att a ridiculous plan premium? Can it be done without flashing a custom rom? I did that to a previous cappy and had constant problems. I am not very savy at all in these matters and just simply want the dumb guy how to make wireless tethering work for me.
You have to root first. then install Titanium backup from the market. Free version is fine.
Go into titanium where is says to restore apps and you will find a list of all the aps on your phone. delete tethering manager and you should be able to tether. The message saying you need a thethering plan will still be on the mobile AP page but it should work.
Just an FYI. AT&T is tracking ppl that are using Tethering without paying for tethering. They are starting to add the tethering charge to the bill, without telling, because they assume you have read the contract. They even have gone as far as dropping you out of the data connection plan.

It's hit or miss though. There are tons of people here that say they have tethered up to several gigs and have never gotten a notice. Most of them seem to think it is from iPhone cracks. Who really knows for sure...
I have tethered for quite a while now (since about 2009, even before my captivate, without the plan. I don't use it as much as those people, but do use it regularly, and have never been notified. I look at it like this: I don't think they will cancel a plan - they want our money. If they add thethring to my plan without telling me, I will just simply take it off. that's that.
edit:
and no, I'm not trying to rehash the whole tethering/plan argument. Just trying to let the OP know what I have read...

I found it to be. Don't forgot to use DEV mode.
The market no longer shows a 1 click root. Any suggestions on how to root otherwise?

grab the zip I uploaded. unzip it. run SuperOnneClick in the folder. Make sure your phone is on AND in debugging mode (in settings/apps/development)
click Rook, then, after that finishes, click Allow non market apps. may take a couple of times.
The version I attached is the only one I could get to successfully root stock 2.2
Let me know if you have problems.
edit: i corrected the path to debugging mode (above).
Hey guys, so the purpose of this thread is to find out if this is a bug or just how the mobile hotspot works on the P9. Everytime my hotspot is active, I can't use data on my device. No other Android device that I've used has ever has this issue with a mobile hotspot.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks in advance!
Bump. Anyone experiencing this?
I have the same issue. Discovered it the day after i got it took it backed and swapped it, all was good. Then a few days later the new phone developed this issue. The only way around that I have found is forget the network on the device you are trying to tether to your p9, set up the connection again, return to the home screen on your p9, go and make a cuppa for 5 to 10 minutes then hopefully it will be fully connected and be able to share data. Long winded i know and if anyone else has a fix for this i would love to hear it as I'm bored of not being to use all my extra data I've just upgrade to when I want to.

Thank you for the response! Good to know it's not only me. Hopefully this is not an issue in the Nougat build.
I'd of thought a few other people would have this issue. I searched for ages when I first got the phone but couldn't find anyone who was experiencing it and gave up, then accidentally found your post months later. Is your p9 branded? Mine's a Vodafone.

I do not have the phone, so this goes first. But I am vodafone user. Bear in mind that some data plans do not allow tethering. If before you had android KK, there was no problem, but since LL, your phone is sending information of how the data is used. Then, vodafone blocks your connection.
You can try to use an app that is called Tether Unlock. You need root.

Thanks for your suggestion, unfortunately this was my first thought so got Vodafone to check this and I've haven't got any restrictions. Also I can get it to work after a bit of messing about but it's not ideal

I also do not have any carrier restrictions regarding tethering.
I'm on the Nougat update and unfortunately, the issue is still present.

So, when you tehter it only works for the first time? That's very weird. Have you tried other roms/updates?
This worries me a bit because i want to buy the phone and i tether every day with my car-radio...

Rogers in Canada. No Canadian carriers have tethering/mobile hotspot restrictions, so that's more of a US thing.

Yeah I try to power down after I forget the WiFi setting as a precaution but always have to forget the network then enter the pass key again for it to fully connect to my p9. I'm using the latest firmware from Vodafone but I don't think they have rolled out nougat yet. Not tried any other roms.
The other option is Bluetooth tether, that works fine for me but but the data speed sucks for browsing or streaming, might be an option to connect to your car radio though but I haven't tried it.

Just got my Mate 10 and have discovered exactly the same problem. As soon as I turn on mobile hotspot, then laptop works fine but all data stops on phone. Thsi is not a network issue as I'm on same network as my previous phone and my package specifically allows tethering.
As soon as I turn off hotpot, data works on my phone again.
Any proper fix appreciated...
Bump this thread. I rebranded my P9 3G+32G to EVA-L19C432 and this problem is happening since the rebranding. The phone itself just loses data when wifi hotspot is turned on while the laptop tethered to the phone has no problem navigating. Before with EVA-AL00C00 firmware, this was not the case. Navigation on the phone was not an issue whether or not wifi hotspot was turned on.
Does anyone have a fix for this problem?
Huawei P9 Lite Hotspot
Don' know if this will fix others but turning on hotspot turns off wifi and mobile data.
After some messing, I realised that I had to MANUALLY turn on mobile data to connect to the internet!
Seems OK so far.
Hope this helps.
How did you solve it? I have p20 pro and it is so ennoying not to be able use data on phone while sharing data... I'm on Vodafone UK and there is no restrictions on sharing data.
Hello , I have exactly the same issue with a Huawei Smart P. As soon as I turn on hotspot mode, the data connection stops and vice versa.
I thought it might be a carrier restriction, so I tried the SIM in a portable hotspot. It works, so it' s not that.
Bump. Same issue here. I have a Honor 9, Android 8.0.0. If I activate tethering, be it USB or Hotspot, the connection works only on the devices connected to the phone, while I can't use data on the phone itself. As soon as I turn tethering off, it works on the phone again...
Any help appreciated!

Bump. There must be some expert around here with a clue about what's going on
I recently updated to unlimited data with ATT, and found out after I updated to the new plan that I no longer able to turn the Tethering ON, which I only use it sometimes for may son's Tablet, when we are in an area where we don't have wifi like in my car.
My question, if I root my device, will I be able to have that function back, or is there other option?
Before someone sees search the forum, which I did, there so much information, I dont know which is valid anymore, any advice or link is much appreciated.
my device is:
sm-N900A
Android version 5.0
Base Band version:N900AUCSE0C3
Thanks in advances
no luck

My understanding is the issue is 5.0. 4.0 & 4.2 seem to be possible right now.
