I posted this earlier in the main HTC M8 forum bug list post and figured it belongs here instead because someone with the ATT version said they don't have that. This is something that I experienced before and after I rooted the Sprint M8.
Basically what happens is that once you enable the setting to long press home for menu under settings and try to use it, it just takes you back to your home screen every time. I was expecting this to be similar to the long press for menu setting the recent apps button had with the EVO 4G LTE.
Go to Settings > Display, gestures and buttons > Buttons - Home

I'm glad I'm not the only one! This has been driving me insane since day One. No pun intended.
I'm not sure how many people here had one but... this reminds of the quick launch WebOS introduced back with the Pre. I hope we are able to add more apps to the quick launch.
Same thing here, along with the unlock screen. You swipe up too low it brings up Google search or browser. Highly annoying
Yeah I'm going crazy over this too. I thought maybe something was supposed to pop up in the bubble along with the search icon when you hold the home button.
I'm sure we'll find a way to make a persistent menu button.

Just swipe up without turning on the screen first. It turns on and unlocks the phone. No risk of accidentally going to Google and you save a step.
Neither setting in that section seems to have any effect as far as I can see. The home button always acts like "home" if you press and release, or press and hold, and even if you set "press and hold" to be Google Now, pressing and holding still simply acts like you just took a long time to release and it acts as a "home" button.
And, I haven't been able to figure out at all what the "Home double-click speed" setting even refers to.
I think the double-click speed refers to how quickly you need to double tap the screen while it's off to turn it on, maybe? Not sure why anyone would double-tap then swipe instead of just directly swiping, but whatever.

It sounds like these are settings left over from the M7, which didn't have on-screen buttons and long press home was needed for menu and double tapping the home button was needed for recent apps. Sounds like they forgot to remove the setting when they switched to on screen buttons.

So if this is in fact the case, where is my Menu button? I can't get to the settings in ES File Explorer without a Menu button.

The menu button shows up for me correctly in legacy apps. This is the correct behavior per http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2012/01/say-goodbye-to-menu-button.html?m=1
If ES File Explorer is setting the SDK version to 11 or higher and not providing an action overflow or other on screen way to access the menu then that is a bug with that program.
EDIT: In ES File Explorer, click on the button in the upper right to slide out the "Fast Access" panel. There is a settings button at the bottom of the panel.

is there anyway we can make the ok button to close the applications instead of minimizing it.

sorry i was not clear, i mean the hardware button, not the one with the task manager.
I'd like this, too.
If you tap the X on the screen with your finger or stylus, it closes the app. If you press the OK button (much easier), the app keeps running
If you don't have it, AE Button Plus is a must have app. You can assign multi functions to every button. I have OK set to close, Plus double tap and tripple tap options to launch some apps.
I use AE button plus, and like it. But if all you need to do is close an app, you can do it with the phone completely stock just by clicking the end call button.

You could try VJOkButt ,the author used to be very active on these boards, mapped to buton 4. I have not tried this on my Kaiser. It worked well on my Wizard but eventually got replaced by SmartsKey.

I'm sorry, you're right. I had used that a few times before I loaded AE button, and my recollection was that it closed them. I see now that it just brings you back to the home screen. In that case, AE button is a good choice to accomplish what you want. And you can keep the stock functionality of the ok button, and put close on a double-click, or click-hold if you like.
Thanks alot for all your contributions, i will give it a try.
I wrote a MortScript that uses the MouseClick command to click in the upper right-hand corner, and then used AEBPlus to map the OK button to it. I had to map it to one of AE's virtual buttons first and then make the change in the standard Settings | Buttons.

If you already have AEBPlus, you don't have to do all that. It has a "close active application" command built in. You simply map whatever you want to that. I have it mapped to a press-hold of the OK button.

True, but I also use the script for other context-sensitive commands depending on the program (I use the same side OK button for "back" in PIE). Call me crazy.

If you have AEBPlus installed, you simply run it, select the button you want to change (in this case, button 4 is the OK button), click in the box down below the button selection, then in the first drop-down you tell it you want that button handled by AEBPlus, and in the second drop-down you select what type of keypress you want to assign (in this case, single press), and in the third drop-down, you select what you want a single press to do (in this case, "OK/Close", then go back to the second drop down and select "long press", and then back to the thrid drop-down and tell it what you want to do for a long press (in this case, "close active application"). Then just exit AEBPlus.

I have tried to do a Google search and searched XDA for an answer and I can't find it. Maybe I am just putting in the wrong keywords.
I thought I saw where there is a way to have the Tilt wake-up by using any of the front buttons vs the side power button. Can someone please tell me how to do this?
Thanks!

I like the "Lock all buttons" mode to prevent the Tilt from being turned on accidently and draining the batteries in my pocket.
But a simple easy way to turn on the Tilt with the buttons locked and not touching the power button, is to slide the screen 1/8 -1/4 inch quickly and let it go back. The unit turns on without the power button even though the buttons are all locked!
Hi:
I am wondering the same thing as the OP. Has anyone found a way to map a different button to "wake" the device up? The power button is just too hard for me to find at times (like when I'm driving).
Any help would really be appreciated.
Thanks!
Sliding the keyboard wakes up the device.
Sliding the keyboard does not wake up my kaiser. There must be some setting somewhere that is causing this behavior for those of you that are experiencing it.

Hi Super:
I did see that post earlier. I guess I probably should have explained myself more clearly. I do not want all keys unlocked, since this would lead to buttons getting pressed by accident when in a pocket or purse. What I am actually looking to be able to do, is wake device with ONE key (instead of the power button). Perhaps by remapping another button to perform the action of the power button, or some other change.
For example, on the Treo 750, you just press the end button, then push the action button. The end button wakes the device, the action button unlocks it.
Thanks again!
You can always set the lock on the phone so that once a button is pressed you'll still have to press unlock on the screen.

Hi:
You're right, I think that's what myk meant. I think he was meaning that sliding the keyboard would wake the device.
Yes, if the phone is actually powered down, the only way to turn it on is with the power button.
I had exact same problem. Fidning the power key whilie driving and otherwise is pain too. So I disabled the key lock from above setting that means any hard key will turn the device on, but I also installed S2U2 or slide to unlock, so if the device was turned on by accident in my pocket, it will go off again soon.
should i start a new topic or can i post here
How can you turn the Tilt off without using the power button?
I've got my old vogue, recently the power button quit working. But thanks to AEButton, bootloader cab and sdcard method rom installation, I've been able to live with it. However, Android hasn't been as friendly. Running Myn's warm donut release, the lock screen is the first thing that pops up after the initial loading (SD card method, since I don't want a brick if things go south). And lock screen needs menu button (default assigned to power). I've done some searching but I couldn't make anything out of it. forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=545393 (xda forums won't let me make it a link since I'm not that active)
Perhaps someone could make a zImage (or whatever file is needed), to reassign the menu button to some other function button (or perhaps button gesture, e.g. double press or long hold), that way those of us who've held on to our vogues (broken buttons and all) can still manage to keep the device from going in the bin.
Thanks.

thanks for the quick replies.
Here are the wm buttons and android assignments on the right
Attached picture has wm button assignment
1. top power: short press = turn on power, wake screen, menu. 1-second long press = toggle keyboard. 2-second long press = toggle portrait/landscape orientation
2. volume slider: volume
3. camera: short press = back. 0.5-second long press = home. 1-second longpress: running app list
4. green: short press = call log. long press = voice dialer
5. red: short press = sleep screen. long press = phone option menu (power off, airplane mode, silent, etc)
6. enter (select), direction keys = standard functions
I'm hoping your python script can assign more than 1 function to a button (long press, double click, etc)
edit: looks like it doesn't, is there any way you can add that? vogue has a very limited set of buttons
and it doesn't look like i can even assign anything to the direction buttons (perhaps at least that, since i can deal without direction pad)
also, i'm not very familiar with android, how would i go about installing this .tar update file from microsd?
Would be more convenient if we can modify the function of the d-pad.
d-pad left = back
d-pad right = menu

In principle, shouldn't this not become an issue with Android if things are properly developed? An android app shouldn't assume a DPad exists, because it often doesn't.
That said, on the smaller, less responsive screen of the vogue, the dpad does come in handy sometimes. I'd love to be able to map long presses on the D-Pad to functions like back, menu, or home.
i think if the D-pad was remapped to be the 4 buttons like most android phones have it could be sweet, but i do like having a D-pad

edit: nm just looked up how to install .tar and haret froyo rom
thanks for the help in adjusting your script for the vogue, l1q1d
where can i download the interface for the vogue because the link is just for the get source
thank you
lol thats something with the browser opening the file
right click and save target as
as mentioned you need to download and install python to run the script
Python is an interpreted language so you have to download what you call "sources" and run using python.
neither myn's donut or incubus's froyo seem to be running stable for me..
donut isn't very responsive at turning screen back on after extended periods in my pocket (takes about a minute after pressing every possible button), while froyo keeps freezing, at which point im forced to reset.
not sure how any of you are using it as the main operating system
i don't think installing on nand would fix those problems (which i couldnt do anyway; damn bootloader requires pressing power)
OFFTOPIC
@nee_vak if you need to install the system on nand use BSG
First let me apologize if this is not the correct location on the forum to post this. I by am no means looking to bash the phone just had some questions that maybe some people may be able to help me with. I understand this is not Touchwiz so it is different, and these are very minor issues nothing that I could not learn to adjust to.
1) Notification drop down. Though I do like the "gesture" style notification drop down. Before I could use the finger print scanner to drop down to notification tab is there another shortcut way to make this happen similar to the finger print way on the S8+? I may be able to do in in Nova but will need to mess with it to figure it out.
2) Brightness bar. Does anyone know how to get the brightness bar to possible show up in the notification without it being pulled down all the way?
3) Home button. I can't seem to find a way to press the home button when in a full screen game app. Meaning prior I was able to press the location and then it would still work. Now I have to swipe up to show the nav bar and then press it.
4)LTE+ This is one isn't a complaint just a question about since I got the unlocked instead of Verizon it shows LTE+ vs 4G doing a quick search it seems to be ok just wanted some clarification.
Other then those few things I noticed over all I am happy the phone is a lot quick and better then my previous. Though at the same time nothing super new to really "wow" me I was already more then happy with the S8+ and the S10+ is a very good evolution. The hole punch is really not as bad as some others may have feared. The finger print does take a little time to get used to but seems to work about 85% success mostly do to slightly off placement. Having the extra cameras is great and so far a nice upgrade from my S8+. Again not really complaining but maybe there is toggle that I may have missed that could have fixed my little issues.
1. Use the swipe down gesture in nova launcher to pull it down, not as nice as FP sensor gesture i know :/
2. You can do this by checking the setting for 'Show Control on Top' when you expand the brightness control
3. If you are using the gestures for navigation you would swipe from where the home button would be if it were held in portrait, so typically on the right when gaming. just play with it.

Thanks, I actually used an an BX actions to remap the button on my S8+ decided to pay for the full feature and now I mapped it to drop down notifications so thats all set. Thanks found the control option by clicking on the arrow. As for my third the more I use both pbones it might be good to swipe up for the buttom. No more accidental presses when in full screen. So it looks like the phones grade is moving up ?. Thanks for the reply.
Pull down the notification all the way. Next to the brightness bar you will see a little down arrow, press that and there it is.

Oh, this is good to know. This is one of the reasons I switch launchers. I'm so used to swipe up anywhere for apps and down anywhere for notifications. This is even more natural to me than the fingerprint reader swipe, but of course the fingerprint reader let you do it in any app which is a big difference.
As for #4 since no one answered, the unlocked version is just being more specific. The US carriers usually replace the specific technology type (LTE, LTE+, etc) with generic "4G" branding (or 5GE if you're a jackass).
I just paid for full BXActions and I was able to remap bixby to double tap to drop the notification. Before I was happy with the free version but deff worth the extra few bucks. I can map more tap types.

I just followed your lead cflip2x and paid for the full version of BXActions and it's (obviously) ideal for this phone. Struggling to attach a single tap action to the bixby button though since whatever I try only seems to activate on a double tap. I need to find the right forum to discuss that issue but it's a great app.

In Nova Beta 6.1 you don't need Tesla anymore, there is an option in the notification which uses the default Pie notification (numbered) system. Starting tomorrow Tesla won't be available on Playstore due to Google new restrictions.
Hi, I don't see any icon when I enable SELECT to speak on my P30 Pro.
Does anyone face the same issue? :crying:

Thanks so much MrDpak!
I realized I typed the issue wrong.. it is Select to Speak in accessibility options, not Tap to Speak.
Does Select to Speak work for you too?

Ok found it! this made my head scratch as well..
Huawei seems to have set it up differently. If you are using Gesture navigation you would not see it. Follow the below steps to first see it and enable it before switching back to Gesture navigation.
1. Go to Settings > System > System Navigation > select Three-key Navigation
2. You will now see the little guy in the corner, click on him and you will then see the floating icon (both in attached screenshot)
3. You can now move around the floating icon and even change back to Gesture Navigation.
Do hit the Thanks button if this helped..

Thanks! I never would have found it if you had not pointed it out!
1 more issue I noticed though was that the feature reads everything starting from the top of my screen and ignores what I select.. In fact, when I have something selected, it reads the context menu to me 'Select all, copy, etc.' then proceeds to read from the top of my screen. Do you see the same behavior?

After enabling it, I just draw a rectangle over the area from which I want it to read.. In the attached screenshot it reads "Try out gestures ... Three-key navigation"
Hope that helps.

I just want to thank MrDpak as well; this had me totally stumpted. So , this solution also help on an Honor 20 running Magic UI.
If only it was possible to run Select to Speak without having to leave Gesture Navigation first; having finally to used to gestures, I prefer them to Three Key etc.
Oh well ... thanks again MrDpak
