Hey there,
I have tried to gather the best freeware applications Android has to offer, with descriptions, links back to the developer's websites and QR codes that leads directly to the Market. It's about a 100 apps divided in various categories.
I'm curious what you guys think of the guide? Would your Top 100 list differ a lot from mine? I hope some of you will have use for it!
Here's the URL if you want to check it out:
The Ever-Growing List of Awesome Android Applications
If you can think of any more applications that should be on the list, please let me know
Thanks

As a new Hero-user (on my third week now), I must say one thing: Thank you so much!! =)
Thanks! Glad someone liked it, at least
A bunch of new apps have been added to the collection, and if anyone knows of a great app that's not included - please let me know.
Nice work!
There's a quite a few top lists, and some are better than others, both in content and layout, but I always discover some new apps worth checking out. I very much like that the entire list is visible on one page, with short descriptions.
Would like to point out that Think Android's AppManager (both free and pro versions) has been renamed to AppMonster.

Are you sure? Because I couldn't find a free version of AppMonster, but AppManager is still available?
Thanks, helped a lot.

The creators of the app announced the name change on their website: http://think-android.com
"App Manager" has been renamed to "AppMonster" in market a while ago now (but it depends on what country you're in). If I search for App Manager it only shows apps with similar names, not the app by Think Android.
Androlib now only shows AppMonster in some -not all- non-English markets, namely Chinese, Czech, Italian, Japanese, Russian. And even then in some markets only the Pro and in some only the Free versions. I think Androlib is not that up to date.
http://www.androlib.com/r.aspx?r=appmonster
AppBrain correctly shows the app as "AppMonster": http://www.appbrain.com/search?q=appmonster
Far too much use of the word "awesome", but a nice list, thanks for your efforts.

You're right. I was tricked by AndroLib.com, initially, since it didn't show any results for AppMonster when I did a search.
@knightnz I try to use the word "awesome" with caution, but I like to alliterate
I've added a new section to the guide with the top free Android live wallpapers
Did I fail to include any good ones?
Apologies for my criticism, but a pure list is not so useful in my opinion; I mean, there's Google for that.
It would be much more useful if this was a ranking, where users can vote their best 10 apps, for example.
Super great lists. Few worthy ones:
1) ColorDict: Universal dictionary reader for Wordnet, data downloaded to local memory (SD Card) for offline view
2) RealCalc: Best replacement calculator
3) Uninstaller: to uninstall apps. Phone's manage application way too slow
4) KeePassDroid: android keepass for storing logins and passwords. If setup with Dropbox or sugarsync, then can sync between phone and computer.
5) Call History: detail call logs better than what 1.5 offer with ability to back up.
6) Moto Phone Portal : access phone by wifi in same network using browser. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=574677
7) xScope GL : Another web browser with much better functionality. Free version limited to number of favs.
8) Skyfire beta : surprisingly fast enough and only option available to view web based videos until Flash 10 lands.
Did I miss K9 or it's not on the list???
Hi again,
I've done some major updates to the Android apps guide, and it now includes all the top widgets and live wallpapers as well. I've also removed some outdated software, and added blue borders to the very best applications so they're easier to spot.
All apps, widgets and live wallpapers are free
Cheers
I am looking for a to-do list app with following features for my g-note:
1) at the front/back of the to-do list, show what time to do it.
2) checkmark if the task is completed.
3) if the task not done on the planned day, it will show up next day. maybe with different color.
4) large widget size.
5) date should be customizable.
Anyone aware of such an app?
Try "Any.do". quite similar to what you are looking for.
Try "due today". I think it does everything you're looking for and looks nice too.

Why use an android only app. With the note, use a better highend Web tool like toodledo.com or rtm. I use toodledo and it is great and I can use it on any device. Apps are great, but one of the best things about the note is having no frustration with using pro Web apps.

Toodledoo doesn't have widgets as it isnt an Android App. It's a web app and a backend, but there are several apps which sync with Toodledoo.
Right now, Play Store is announcing 2Do: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.guidedways.android2do
But there are lots more:
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=toodledo&c=apps
I think Todo.ly has most if not all these features, and there is a neat little android app that syncs with the web service.
Above a certain number of tasks, or to get certain features, I think it's a subscription service tho.
Again I suggest you try toodledo first on your computer, then set it up as a bookmark on your phone. On the Note it looks great. Then if you like it, you can make it a short cut - and what do you know, something that seems like an app. Only issue is if you can get a connection. But that works on any computer device you want. Read your todo list on anyones computer if you need to. Apps are great but - I never use an app when the web will do. Same for me and google docs. I know then I have the cloud and the internet behind me. My phone dies, my data is safe and accessible anywhere on anything.
Side Note
There is a movement ( i generally support) where some folks call apple and android apps (mainly from large corporations) 'the anti-internet' - because many corporations are filtering the www world ( or own the ads) by making apps to stuff that is right there on the web anyways (a news radio station app for instance) but filters or dumbed down or controlled. They would love to get rid of the more open internet, and they worry that you might keep other windows open or you can ad block or click to other sites - so they want to filter and control you with there nice UI but filtered app. I love apps that do something, but if it is a refilter of the web - well I would rather put up for a slightly worse UI to get the real unfiltered internet. And of course with the Note ( size, pen, ...) it is easier to look at real webpages ( why I got it). google docs and toodledo are two examples of web over app.
DGT GTD
Universal 5★ app with all features your looking for and more.
Nothing really approaches it on the Market.
Okay, I messed up and mis-spelled eureka-image while rooting and didn't pay attention and let the device update after I rebooted it after a couple hours of being gone then I was stuck in google locked down build.
Well this got me thinking if we can't root can we make "Chromecast" believe we are using Google Movies when in fact it is a 3rd party app?
Wouldn't we just need to find the string that communicates that the 3rd party app is Google Movies, or Pandora or any of the Official Apps?
I could be wrong but I think there is away to make it work but it'll have to be built in the 3rd party's app.
Thoughts?

The Chromecast utilises a whitelisting type file in which applications that it will respond to is presented, unfortunately if it isn't aware of an application it wont show up in the list for that device (due to the dial protocol).
We can't man in the middle non rooted devices as the whitelist received is provided through https and therefore is not easily attacked (trust me I've spent more than enough hours trying).

I had thought about this just before KyoCast appeared, but I'm pretty sure it would be against the DIAL registry's registration and/or Cast SDK's license for an app to impersonate another app. I still like the concept though.
Actually, even if an app used another app's DIAL ID, the whitelist would still point the Chromecast-side app to the real app, (ie, phone might run SneakyApp by Chromecast would still launch its Google Movies app), I think.
Man this is awful they went through all this effort to limit users :/
Okay, now I know all the apps require to be pulled up differently on Chromecast but what about if we mimic "Casting Tab" which I believe is driven by the host computer and Chromecast is only listening and displaying what it see's. I'm sure it's secured with HTTPS too but HTTPs isn't that secure but you'd probably need a certificate if they are authenticating but if not it would be as easy as sniffing a handshake and injecting that packet then utilizing that connection. Sorry I'm thinking outside the box! lol

it is probably ok to use someone else's player in an App you wrote but it is probably not ok to say you are their App that also uses it.
I can certainly see Real Player making their CCast (DIAL) Player App available to 3rd Party developers to use for other projects like NFL and MLB streams that require DRM as part of their Content Creator packages.
Maybe you know (I'm sure Team Eureka would have an idea) if it is the Apps we run that are Whitelisted or the Apps that actually play on the CCast that are restricted by the Whitelist. I'm betting the Latter...
As I know it, the whitelist controls everything Chromecast "runs."

So the official SDK is released! But the app list doesn't seem to come from: https://clients3.google.com/cast/chromecast/device/config anymore.
I've looked around some and there doesn't seem to be any documentation of how the new configs are being retrieved and even how the serial information from the chromecast is being transmitted either. I know it's definitely not the old config URL anymore because that doesn't list new apps like AllCast which works on my chromecast perfectly fine. Anyone know how the new app list is constructed?

Are you rooted or stock?
If you're rooted, probably you are using the Team Eureka whitelist which is the Google whitelist + Team Eureka.
You can go into the web panel and switch to the Google whitelist if you want to test.

So I'm using stock but the reason why I'm interested is that I'm the author of a chromecast receiver emulator with the goal of allowing any device that can run desktop chrome can run this app and be a chromecast receiver. However, the method by which a chromecast builds its app list isn't as simple as querying https://clients3.google.com/cast/chromecast/device/config since that doesn't contain all the apps that are available on the device and I've never found any documentation about how the serial of the device is transmitted

Well the Homescreen stuff is built into the ROM I'm pretty sure.
As for AllCast are we sure he is using a Player App that gets loaded to the CCast or is he merely sending a link to directly connect to the unit running Allcast?
Koush would be the best one to answer that.

If I were you I'd go for:
android SDK sources
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qsw9Ogb6t4Y#t=92
https://developers.google.com/cast/docs/sender_apps
https://developers.google.com/cast/docs/receiver_apps
https://developers.google.com/cast/android/reference/com/google/android/gms/cast/package-summary
and then is not satisfied contact Team-Eureka [email protected]
Eventually:
Reverse android apk code of allcast(this tool is widely discussed on xda):
https://code.google.com/p/android-apktool/
Look at posted sourcecode:
https://github.com/googlecast/
https://code.google.com/p/chromecast-mirrored-source/
https://github.com/team-eureka/
Also if you are really bored you can sniff communication between Chromecast and any app for instance AllCast with wireshark on linux distro.
So I talked to one of the Team Eureka members and he gave me some very useful information.
The current URL for looking up available apps is this:
https://clients3.google.com/cast/chromecast/device/baseconfig
The response is the same format s the old URL except this one has an extra field in it called "enabled_app_ids". This is a list of IDs that the chromecast device should show as existing. Once the app is requested to load, the metadata for the app is loaded from:
https://clients3.google.com/cast/chromecast/device/app?a={appid}
where {appid} is the id of the app.
It seems google opted for this to increase the number of apps that can be loaded into the manifest before they reach the limit

I hope so, but for example: WhatsApp, Facebook and so on I can´t use with Android Auto and I would think these apps are the apps with the fastest update rate.

Only messaging and audio playback apps. Mainly because (according to the developer docs) these are the only API's currently available to developers. This will undoubtedly be expanded on; there is another category of apps (car related) that no API's exist for at this point.
But how long will it take? If you compare it to Wear, probably the better part of a year. And it seems Wear was much more finished in the first place. This is a little disturbing. No one buys the initial run of Auto compatible units because Auto is so unfinished, and manufacturers loose interest. Hopefully, that will not be the case, but I for one am on the fence for now.

This could happen in the middle of a trip, or at least after a car restart.
Of course almost everyone had fun recently with an accidental development release that showed numbers and emails all over the screen.
Hello,
thanks for the link.
When I try to take a look which apps are supported the result is "No result." (Germany, also with United States VPN)
Perhaps you can post a list of the supported apps?
Facebook will never be allowed on Android Auto.

I hope so, but for example: WhatsApp, Facebook and so on I can´t use with Android Auto and I would think these apps are the apps with the fastest update rate.

Android Auto is designed to Auto safety guidelines that are very strict. Facebook is not something someone should be using in a car.
What is the diffrence between Facebook and WhatsApp and ICQ what is supported?!

Android Auto supports "Messaging" (and "Media").
So if Facebook could do an app or extension limited to text messaging with text to speech and speech to text, then AA could support that I guess.
No looking at pictures/videos or posting them or doing text on screen for sure.
But the app would have to be approved by Google, for distraction, and whatever else suits their business goals.
I wish Waze was supported. I would rather use it than Google Maps.
