I hear it doesnt work, but I have used Google Drive and that works just fine.
thanks for the reply
I hope dropbox gets integrated soon.
Whether it works or not depends on the file type. Dropbox itself doesn't seem to be the issue. MP4 works but most AVI's do not.
Google Drive has it's own player and that seems to play the AVI files fine.
This is related to the browser not to Chromecast or Dropbox. Perhaps Dropbox could add their own player similar to Drive.
Maybe if you have one of the Public Folder accounts, it might be worth sending that link to Chromecast and see if it comes up happy.
VLC Player itself has a STREAMING option in the File>streaming
It can stream to HTTP, RTSP, UDP.... any know if this is possible to get chromecast to pick it up?
HTTP seems to be the logical choice. But no idea how to pick it up anyone familiar with these functions?

I think this is to stream something out on the web. It doesn't take local content and turn it into an http stream, if that is what you were wanting. In other words it doesn't really stream to http but it streams from an http url.

Actually, it does. I have used some media player for iOS that makes use of VLC's (desktop version) streaming of local content capability.

So it is possible to do it, just have to figure out how to read the stream either on the Chrome Browser end or better yet ChromeCast itself
So you mean other than streaming in a chrome tab and casting that tab, right? Cuz right now I can play a movie in chrome through vlc and that's how I cast my local media . all formats too but higher res does lag a lil bit

VLC Web Plugin
Does anyone know how to set VLC as the default extension in Chrome? Web searched and couldn't find the answer?
I downloaded the web plugin for Chrome Mac, installed it fine, and re-launched chrome.
Whenever I queue up a movie, it launches the Quicktime extension instead of Chrome extension.
Thanks!

VLC plugin is out of date. It doesn't even show up in chrome://plugins. That being said, VLC would need to stream to the DIAL protocol as that is what chromecast uses. In its current state, VLC will do no such thing.

How can I watch paid videos on Chromecast ?
Right now it does not work for paid videos.
It only works with free videos
I am talking about paid channels for which I have already paid
Example: Willow TV
It gives an error 'cannot play this video, try some other video'
any pointers ?
Do you mean paid content from Play Store? Or from YouTube?

Yes that is what I meant, paid content from YouTube. In theory that is supposed to work but I have never tried it.

This is really irritating as I am unable to watch the content I have paid for.
If I am able to watch on my laptop I should be able to see it on chromecast as well

What methods have you tried? You mention your laptop... so I'm going to assume you've installed the Google Cast extension for chrome.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-cast/boadgeojelhgndaghljhdicfkmllpafd
Try:
Opening tab to desired site
Cast tab
Play video
Adjust settings as desired
What did you try in order to get the "Error:cannot play this video, try some other video." message?
---
Also, did you google your question? There is a support page regarding Paid content and the Chromecast.

I don't think this can be done, Google itself says viewing live channels is not possible
Yes I can use cast a chrome tab but it has its own disadvantages, in Google's own words:
https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/3265953
I will try and open a ticket, lets see what they say..
Because they say we can see Paid channels if not live events
Are you casting paid content from the button inside the YouTube window on desktop Chrome? Or are you using the Android app? Have you tried both?

Willlow TV is live tv streaming. Chromecast does not support live streaming channels on Youtube. The only way around it right now is to use screen casting in Chrome.

I agree live tv is not supported but what about the videos uploaded by the channel.. I should be allowed to see them since they are not live
Have you been able to find a resolution?

Have you been able to find a resolution for this? It lets we match highlights but not replays.
I subscribed to UFC Select Youtube channel hoping it would work on Chromecast. The videos start playing but stop after about a minute or so with a similar message as the OP posted. Unsubscribed

Live streams could work but the Live Stream your talking about probably has some DRM method that won't currently work on the CCast.
Give it time though I'm sure all of those type services will support CCast when they get around to it.

YouTube doesn't support live streaming of any kind on the Chromecast or any of their other DIAL compatible apps on tvs and other devices. Why that is, I have no clue. It has been quite a while and they haven't said anything about live streaming so I wouldn't expect it any time soon.

Likely it has to do with the authentication involved, but it could also have something to do with DRM fears.
Remember that Chromecast is essentially a headless micro-computer client - so it's accessing the media separately from the device making the cast request.
It's like if I called you on the phone and said "Hey, go to this YouTube link" - your YouTube session would have no knowledge of my laptop's session, and if the link I give you isn't available to your account, you won't see it.
Not to mention CCast only supports Widevine and Playready DRM...
It would not surprise me to find that the Live Channels on You Tube are using some other DRM or Encryption method.
You should write to the channel your paying the sub to and get them working on CCast support.
Hi guys,
When using chrome on PC we can type: file//192.168.x.xxx to access the file on server file. However, when using Android phone, is it anyway around that I can access file (mp4 file) on server using Chrome? The reason that I need to access the file using Chrome is I want to cast it to my PC.
Or anyway that send mp4 file to my TV using ChromeCast (my chromecast is unroot)
Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure what you mean by streaming to PC since you get the file in chrome using the URL already.

Chrome for Android doesn't support extensions, so it's moot (not to mention, even if it did work, it would kill your battery and overheat your phone with the CPU load for the required real-time decoding and re-encoding).
You could
Run Plex Media Server on your PC and Plex client on your phone. This will make whatever you give Plex access to playable on phone and on Chromecast regardless of the original format, because your PC would do any required transcoding of the video to a Chromecast-compatible format.
Run a DLNA server on your PC and use Avia on your phone. This would let Avia on your phone "pull" the video from the PC and "push" it to Chromecast. Only videos in Chromecast-compatible format will play, though.
Install RealPlayer Cloud and upload your videos from your PC to RealPlayer Cloud. RealPlayer Cloud does any requires transcoding via their SurePlay feature, so you will be able to play what you have uploaded to RealPlayer Cloud on phone and Chromecast regardless of the original format.

Yes, it does
i tested the app.
only video, no audio. apparently it wont transcode on-the-fly like the app "MegaCast".
no reason from my side to use your app, unless you can do better on-the-fly transcoding, for example just transcode the audio stream and pass through the video stream.
THAT would be a reason to use your app!
it was 1080p h264 + dual language ac3 (i guess) in mkv.

Hi, Purah
Thank you for your review.
Did you cast some local video from your device, or you used DLNA server? And what chromecast version you are using?
Actually ViCast does audio only transcoding when it is possible and it looks like your file is a case. There is a known issue with ChromecastUltra which may lead to behaviour that you have described. We will add this note to the description.
Could you please provide us the file which you have tried to cast?

I have been searching for some time for an app to cast my mkv files with ac3 audio. Megacast trancodes but was dropping out part way through. Finally found vicast and it works perfectly. Thanks. Should ask will you be releasing a paid version to get rid of those annoying ads?

Hi,
I've got this "HuiHeng WiFi Display Dongle", which is supposed to do Airplay, DLNA and Miracast. However it has very poor decoding capabilities. As a result, almost none of my local video files can be casted to this device.
My question is, is ViCast compatible with DLNA and/or Airplay? If not, do you have any plans to include DLNA support in the near future? Willing to pay for a reliable transcoding app for DLNA.
Thanks in advance for your time

I'm was planning to buy a Chromecast today to take away with me on my upcoming one month South America trip but the majority of my media is in MKV format, mostly x264 and more recently x265. if viCast can do x264 MKV then I will definitely give it a try. But can ViCast do x265 yet? If not, is this something you think will be possible? Recently I have started only encoding or downloading x265 files due to their tiny size so if I could cast those via the Chromecast I'd be a very happy camper.
Also, is your app able to find and view videos files in hidden folders (ones prefixed with a dot)? My kids use my phone quite a bit so I want to make sure any unsuitable TV shows or movies (or any other, ahem, "adult oriented videos") I might have cannot be viewed by them.
If it doesn't can I make a suggestion? I've seen so many people also request this in other apps - basically you allow support for hidden files and folders but password protect it so even if my 5 year old starts ViCast they can only see the vids in the main Google/OS Videos folder. But if I wanted to watch hidden files I could enter the password (entered during setup) and it would list them and allow me to play them. What do you think?
Superb app! Keep up the good work..
May i have one suggestion though? Please add a video zoom option so that any video size can be zoomed to fill up any screen from where it is watched ?
I have installed de this app but it's not working on Android 9. Every time i tried to cast something the app simply closes itself. The developers still suport the app?
