having some flashing issues
I can confirm good file download, drivers on PC are good, I'm using a back USB port, USB cable is BRAND NEW! lol, have Write protection off as well. Tried both fastboot and mfastboot just for good measure. Any thoughts? Do I NEED to have an unlocked bootloader for this? please say no
Also the file shows up as a different size on the fastboot screen, it's over 10mb.

You need a unlocked bootloader to flash twrp. If you are locked then you must use safestrap recovery.

Was afraid of that... sucks. Would that mean only certain partitions have R/W access with "MotoWpNoMo"?
No the entire system has r/w access the only difference is you can flash a kernel with an unlocked boot loader. As a matter of fact safstrap is made from twrp they look and function the same. Only difference is SS has ROM slots for kexek kernels. Unlocked bootloaders don't need these slots we can flash just about anything within reason.
If you're on 4.4.2 you won't get root now tho. You'd have had to be rooted before upgrading.

I'll assume by system you mean system partition, I figured that since we can get root on 4.4 Write protection has to be removed from at the very least the system partition. Also, Yeah I know a little about safestrap and it's features but may not bother with it, had 3 Moto-x's so far, all have the same MMS issue so I'm probably def refunding it, that issue aside great phone. also, i don't want to unlock my bootloader (no warranty) especially since Moto's stock firmware has bugs in it.

Yup. From reading around it seems like there's a script in /system that flashes the stock recovery upon booting up. I tried to get the PwnMyMoto apk onto my device to get root and remove the recovery script file but now I'm getting an unexpected exception when trying to install the apk through adb. I have both USB debugging and Unknown Sources allowed. Any ideas?
Edit:
By the way I am T-Mobile, post OTA. If that changes anything.

This might be a long way to do it but can't you downgrade back to 4.2.2 then get root with that then follow the instructions found in the general section for maintaining root through taking the ota? This should fix your problem. Also the instructions there might give you a different idea of how to work around this issue. You might just be able to flash the boot image and install the hidden su yourself.

I'm already on 4.2.2. I'm guessing you mean to undo the recent OTA? How would I do that without a custom recovery or root?
Twrp has a built on file explorer, can you boot directly into recovery from the fastboot screen and delete the file that way?

One more clarification: After you flash recovery, you are using the volume down key to highlight recovery and then you are using the up arrow to select it correct? You do not press the power button to make the selection as on nexus devices.

PS you had recovery the first time you hit the up volume and it sent you to a screen that said "no command" from that screen if you press the up volume and power button together it sends you to the recovery screen. It may be down volume and power together to get passed that "no command" screen but its one of the two. I saw people having that same problem in the forum about maintaining root through the OTA.

Will charge up a bit over 50% and see. I still get permission denied. Plus when I try to get into recovery, I can't. The Motorola log shows up for a while, then restarts and boots normally into Android.
I have a Verizon Dev Ed unlocked with root and a custom recovery installed on 4.4. A friend of mine has an unlocked Verizon Dev Ed and would like root but doesn't want to flash ROMs or mod her device; she just wants to install SuperSU to get root. I read on another thread that you can boot into a custom recovery without installing it and then install SuperSU from the custom recovery to root.
Rooting Without Installing a Custom Recovery
After reading that thread it seemed to me on a Nexus at least you should be able to do it by placing the custom recovery into the same directory as fastboot and typing:
fastboot boot twrp-2.6.3.1-ghost-4.4.img.
which should boot you into the custom recovery without installing it. I did this and got an error:
booting . . .
Command restricted
FAILED (remote failure)
Then I tried it again with mfastboot and got pretty much the same errort
booting . . .
(bootloader) Command restricted
FAILED (remote failure)
Any thoughts? Is it not possible to root a Moto X without installing a custom recovery? Or is there a problem with the fact that I have already installed TWRP on my device? I was trying to test this for my friend but I am already rooted with TWRP installed as my recovery.

yeah, that is becoming clearer and clearer to me.
I wish fastboot boot recovery.img worked... and I don't even have a DE.
I'm on a locked, 4.4, non-DE. Rooted using SlapMyMoto .5c and have used MotoWpNoMo. Everything is fine, but I'd like to have the stock recovery back (since SlapMyMoto modified it).
I can flash the boot partition with the boot.img from the SBF, without issue. However, the recovery.img doesn't seem to work.

Don't you know that just like pwnmymoto, slapmymoto disables recovery in order to disable write protection?
How did I do?
I was not sure of the answer & guessed!
Pretty that is the answer. Pwnmymoto did that to me anyway.
Ha. Not quite sarcastic enough... needs more cow bell.
They don't actually disable recovery. They modify the recovery image so that instead of booting into recovery, WP is simply disabled and the phone boots as normal. My problem is that I can't seem to restore the stock recovery using the tools and images provided through Motorola's website. This also has me concerned that using RSDLite may not even work since RSDLite basically just scripts the installation of the images/partitions in a certain order.
I'm surprised I'm the only person who has hit this (and wants to fix it) given how many people used pwnmymoto, rockmymoto and any version of slapmymoto before the 1.0.
Flashing the (cam) 4²² XML did work for me yet the root solution from there was too much for my old Mac. I wish I had tried the moto x tool kit aio utility.
Also... turns out I may have been wrong about the recovery image being modified... looks like it was the partition table that was modified.
I sucked it up and decided to risk losing my data (since I didn't know what the ramifications to flashing the partition data would be). Flashing gpt.bin seems to have fixed the issue and allowed me to flash the stock recovery. For anyone who isn't familiar with what it is you need to flash and ends up in this thread:
mfastboot flash partition gpt.bin
I didn't lose any data and have noticed no discernible loss in functionality (root or write protect).
not sure what you were trying to do.. but when I see hab check messages when trying to flash, it usually means you've got some miss-matched files/partitions on your phone.
the GPT.BIN has a little to do with security, etc.
Hopefully you are not in a state where you still have miss-matched files, because if you do, and you take an OTA, you could brick.
Indeed, I'm minorly concerned about that too.
I was just trying to restore the original recovery image functionality. No particular reason right now, just wanted to. Like I said before, I rooted using slapmymoto .5C and am on the 4.4 OTA. The files I used to flash (gpt, boot and recovery) were from the 4.4 SBF (VZW_XT1060_4.4-13.11.1Q2.X-69-3_CFC_1FF.xml.zip). I think I'm covered here, but I'm also not taking the current OTA until its rooted or I can unlock, neither of which seems likely to happen anytime soon.
I Can't flash recovery for my moto x, I have unlocked the bootloader and appears to me on fastboot: Device is UNLOCKED. Status Code:3

In one video I watched it said that I needed to have it say Status Code:1. Is that where I am going wrong?

What recovery are you trying to flash? Stock or other? Unlocked Status Code 3 is needed to flash an alternate or 3rd party recovery.
Besides the error listed in the first post, exactly what "others" do you see as error codes?
Things to try... (in no special order)
this mfastboot -> mfastboot-442.zip

update your ADB and Platform Tools

However I should have known better, I changed the USB port and it worked just fine with the mfastboot I downloaded longer than I would like to admit before I posted my question.

Still can't flash custom recovery
I have a Verizon XT1060 Developer Edition. Unlocked bootloader. Drivers seem to be installed correctly, "Fastboot devices" identifies the phone. Battery is 90%+. Fastboot menu says "Device is unlocked. Status Code 3". I have tried different USB ports on the PC, different cables to connect the phone and just about every other variable that I can think of.
I have followed all of the suggestions listed in this post and I still cannot flash a custom recovery. I have tried multiple versions of TWRP, Fastboot, Mfastboot etc.. Here is the error message...
(bootloader) Variable not supported!
error: cannot open 'twrp-2.6.3.1-ghost-4.4.img'
Actually depending on the method I am trying at the time, fastboot mfastboot etc., I may get a couple of additional lines that mention Max download size etc. but it always starts with the bootloader comment and ends with "Cannot open......"
Searching for "(bootloader) Variable not supported!" returns a lot of hits but I have not found anything to clear the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

That usually means that mFastboot (or fastboot) can't find the IMG file on your PC.
My first question would be... does that file exist in your current directory/folder?
i.e... at the command prompt.. type dir *.img is the twrp file listed there? If no, that is your issue. change to the folder (directory) where the TWRP IMG file is, and try it.
It is there. Here is what I got.

Since this has been driving me crazy for a couple of days I have several folders with different versions of Fastboot and Mfastboot in them along with some different versions of TWRP and CWM and I am getting the same error with all of them. This last time I just stuck the TWRP file in my platform -tools folder to try and make sure I had a good Fastboot file.
Thanks for the reply. If you have any other ideas I am eager to hear them.

Had you made ANY prior modifications to your unit before now? Any possibility you used one of the previous root/write protect disable exploits, and THEN got the bootloader unlocked?
I've seen alot of users in this situation recently -thanks to middleman
I suggest you follow the 'return to stock' thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/guide-moto-x-return-to-100-stock-using-t2446515
You should flash the 4.4.2 VZW SBF file from here: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0
SBFing back to stock is very different from a Factory Reset in that it can actually repair a damaged filesystem, and even un-do any previous exploits you may have used.
There are 2 methods - many report that the "Manual Method" is easier than using RSD Lite. Either should work equally well, but pay close attention to the steps.
You will want to do a couple of things just a little bit differently. First, use mfastboot as suggested by KidJoe for ALL flashing commands.
Second, once your phone has been placed into bootloader mode (AP Fastboot), before you proceed with the fastboot commands listed under Manual Method, do this first:
mfastboot flash partition gpt.bin
mfastboot flash motoboot motoboot.img
mfastboot reboot-bootloader
Your device should reboot back to the bootloader. NOW, proceed with the entire list of commands (using mfastboot for all of them). Yes, you will be flashing partition and motoboot again...don't worry. It is intentional.
After you have completed the rest of the steps, you will likely be able to flash TWRP (or custom recovery of your choice) without issue.
Let us know if this fixes your issues.

I had not done any modifications prior to unlocking the bootloader but going back to stock is about the only thing that I could think of that I have not already tried. I will give this a shot tomorrow night and let you know how it went. Thanks for your help.

One last thing I can suggest before return to stock:
Are you trying to flash the recovery -while booted into Android-? If so, you have to have USB Debugging enabled. Some users have experienced difficulty using fastboot while booted into Android even with USB debugging enabled.
----------------
You can try flashing from bootloader (AP Fastboot Mode) instead.
To do this, unplug the phone from USB. Power off the phone. Hold down VOL DOWN and power the phone back on. You should now be booted into bootloader.
Now plug the USB back in, and try:
mfastboot flash recovery twrp_filename.img

Thanks for the advice but I am not booted into Android. I started with the phone off and got into the bootloader exactly as you suggested. I will have some time over the next few days to flash back to stock and start over again. I will post the results. In the meantime if you think of anything else, let me know. Thanks for your help.

try shortening the path the IMG resides in...
i.e. make a folder off the root of drive C call it FLASH... drop the TWRP.img into c:\flash and try flashing it from there.

What did you do to it that you can't manually undo?

Nothing it all, I just unlocked bootloader like everyone else and rooted it. But now when I try to do it manualy I get 2 errors, I do this:
fastboot oem lock begin
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
On the boot.img and recovery.img flash I get this error for both:
D:\android-sdk\sdk\platform-tools>mfastboot flash recovery recovery.img
sending 'recovery' (10280 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.370s]
writing 'recovery'...
Preflash validation failed
FAILED (remote failure)
finished. total time: 0.596s
I also tried it with mfastboot, both didnt work.. and when I do fastboot oem lock I get :
D:\android-sdk\sdk\platform-tools>mfastboot oem lock
...
sst lock failure!
OKAY [ 0.026s]
finished. total time: 0.026s
If you didn't flash a custom recovery and kernel, there is no reason to try and flash recovery or boot. Just hit the unroot option in SuperSU, and relock the bootloader and you should be good to go.

That's the thing.. if I type fastboot oem lock it says I must begin with fastboot oem lock begin and then start flashing signed files or something.
So I tried that but no luck.
Thx for your reply.

That's weird, I've never heard of that before . It must be something unique to the X. Sounds like we need the stock boot and recovery images to relock the bootloader. Are the signed images even available to us yet? I have no clue...

Sadly motorola hasn't put up any factory images on their website as far as i know. In their support forums they said they'll be coming up soon a month ago though. There's a tool posted on the Moto X dev forums which seemed to have a system.img and other images embedded, just read that up and see if it helps.
Alternatively, there's no real need for you to relock, most likely no one's gonna notice it. And if yours is not a pure edition they would know if they checked your imei if you have unlocked or not irrespective of you locking the bootloader or not. So the best and quick solution for you is to unroot, flash the logo.bin file posted on the Moto X dev forums so that you dont have any message showing up that you have unlocked the bootloader on starting up your device.
