Here are the setting I used to get tethering working. I believe most if not all of these are the same setting that were used to get tethering working again on the EVO LTE after the 4.3 update.
App = WiFi Tether Router(I think it was roughly $2 in the Play Store)
Interface = wlan0
Method = 3-HostApd
No Firmware Reload is Not Checked
Drivers = nl80211
Wi-Fi Mode = I'm using WiFi - N
ApType = ad-hoc
Keep Screen ON is Not Checked
Prevents Stand-By Is Checked
MTU Adjust is Not Checked
HostApd Patch Is Checked
Power Transmit Mgmt Is Checked
In Addition if you click on Advanced WiFi settings you need to uncheck "Scanning Always Available"
I don't think I messed with anything else. And Obviously some of the options are under the users discretion.
I'm going to try to get TreveMod's version of WiFi tether working also. If I have any luck I'll post those settings also.
Works perfectly!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!

I used to use FoxFi but with older HTCs it had lots of issues so I gave it up. Speed wise I haven't noticed any draw backs. I had up to 20mb down on my iPad from tethering on LTE.

Did you try changing the wifi channel on the app? I usually don't leave it on 1 but my laptop doesn't seem to want to connect to anything but channel 1.
Also, how are everyone's speeds on this thing? Im testing 28 megs on the phone itself but on my devices are all at 2 megs. Seems similiar to oldschool wifi tether for root user where for some reason it wasn't tethering at full speed.

I'm getting roughly 5mb down and up on my Surface Pro while my M8 is pulling roughly 7mb up and down so I am seeing some speed loss but not as much as you are.
As for the channel you should try to run channel 6 or 11 since that is the standard channels that your average router runs at. Try both, one or the other may work better depending on the amount of interference in your home due to microwaves, portable phones, and other routers in the vicinity.
Worked for me. $2.50 well spent.
For some reason it kept freezing up everytime I tried to "Start WiFi Router," but after applying your settings (from OP), it actually works (after briefly acting frozen). Thanks!
(Using BadSeed 2.0 ROM on M8)
App locked up out of the box, however once I applied the recommend settings from the op seems to work no problem. I hardly ever use tether but if I am ever in a pinch it's nice to have set up. I also liked supporting good apps anyway. $2.50 well spent thanks for the suggestion op.
Just glad to save people from some of the frustrations I went through with tethering.

Works great with OP settings. Actually seems to work better than any of the native tether hacks I've had since JB. Worked all day Friday with my surface pro2 and this setup and not one single issue! Well worth the money and the widget works well too! Thanks!

Currently I'm using wifi tether with an unrooted Toshiba thrive, non-ad-hoc mode. I know that someone else has already posted this on here, but I have found a way to use it without it setting itself up as ad-hoc, and I couldn't find the other post about it. I did not write this program so I take no credit for it.
0. Need to have root, and I'm currently in gingerbread
1. dl the latest beta (currently 6) of wifi tether from here http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
2. After you have done that you need to go into "settings", go to "change device profile" go down to "LG optimus s" and select that
3. Now go down to "change LAN" and select "192.168.1.0/24"
4. Enjoy the blazing speed of 4g on something other than you revo
I'm not saying this will work for everyone, I am rooted as well as having gingerbread, so this may be another caviat to it. But try it anyway, what's the worst that can happen. And if anyone else has any other settings that may help, please share

Wow finally I got my phone to beacon infastructure! Thanks!
Unless I am not seeing it, I can't find a setting to disable 'n' mode. That mode tends to cause the connection to fluctuate from 6Mpbs to 65Mbps and basically loses connection just as the problem with the 4gHotSpot App.
Overall, great find. I tried that once before but couldn't get any of the profiles to work. Can't remember if "LG Optimus s" was on it at the time and maybe changed the network to 192.168.1.0 was the trick.
Connects and Windows will auto connect and it IS Infrastructure. Just hope I can find a way to disable 'n' mode so I can maintain a strong connection. When I went to 'g' only mode in HotSpot, I maintained a solid, no dropout connection rate. Sure, n at 65Mbps would be nice, but g works and is fast enough for tethering and what the standard tethering apps use (the 54Mbps speed)..
Thanks for the heads up and the post!
-Cybie
PS. The only part I don't like about the find is it de-motivates me to figure out the HotSpot app per my post/thread, lol. But, I can live with that!
EDIT: The speed I am referring to is the link speed with the Windows Task Manager/Networking tab. When the phone connects, it's 'LinkSpeed' is 65Mbps. When you access internet, or not always so, it will drop the Link Speed down to 6Mbps. If you try to use SpeedTest.Net or Speakeasy.net/speedtest, they will usually come to a halt on download testing near the end. That's the Wifi dropping out. With this and the 4gHotSpot, that will happen. But as soon as I changed the HotSpot to 'g' only connection (at 54Mbps Link Speed), it maintained and never dropped out.
I've had absolutely no problems with fluctuation of service when it comes to internet as long as i have 3g or better service.

Interesting... I finally got it to work this way. Previously I had been using the standard ad-hoc method, and when I'd switch over my Nook Color couldn't obtain an IP address.
The apparent solution(s) was to put it in SoftAp (still would not get IP address), then forget the connection (left over from ad-hoc) and reconnect.
Seems to work like a charm now.

That's what I was doing, and it seemed to work fine, but leaving it on auto means it's ad-hoc. I guess some people have had issues with ad-hoc, hence the need for true infrastructure, but I personally have been able to get anything I want to connect to ad-hoc. Of course, I don't own a high end tab...

The one thing you can't get to connect to ad-hoc is another android device. At least none that I know of. It's an issue the Google is supposed to be working on. The other problem with ad-hoc, such as tethering Windows (mainly because Windows has the lamest networking abilities) is that it won't connect automatically. Windows will automatically sense Infrastructure and if you've selected to automatically connect, it will do so every time you switch on tethering. With ad-hoc, you don't have the auto connect ability within Windows. At least not without any 3rd party software/hacks that I'm not currently aware of.

Garden Tether is ad-hoc only. It's stable and available in the market. It's, in my opinion, the best overall reliable/working tether app out. I've never had any disconnect issues.
Aside from the Verizon 4g Hot Spot app, the wifi tether beta allows infrastructure connectivity along with ad-hoc. If you've ever tried to connect an Android device to an ad-hoc only network, it's likely it either didn't 'see' it, or couldn't connect. Other devices out there fail to connect to ad-hoc also, so infrastructure is needed.
And, look closer. These two apps don't look identical within the settings.. Close, but different.

The wifi radio in the phone is limited to 65 Mbits. That change won't make it become a multistream radio (this is a hardware limitation), it will merely change the way power management is handled, which can have an effect on the throughput (not the connection rate).

Hi,
I'm currently having difficulties with WiFi hotspot on my HTC One. I really like this phone, however I am THIS CLOSE to selling it. I've had HTCs in the past and the hotspot function was never an issue with these previous phones.
I am running MaximusHD 20.0.0
The WiFi hotspot OCCASIONALLY works with security disabled, however even then it is very tempermental
I usually appear to have connected (showing up as a connected device on the phone end) however it never seems to show full connection on the PC end (i.e. limited connection and no internet access or connecting times out altogether)
I have tried with multiple computers with no success
Any ideas? Appreciate the help in advance.
Cheers,
Dave
Does anyone have any ideas for trouble shooting? Is anyone else facing the same issue? Can anyone else report their WiFi hotspot working without any issues at all?
Works just fine for me, try it with another ROM (I'm ARHD), and try using the stock hotspot setting found in "more" category of your settings. Also, your carrier may be blocking it.

Is this an extra feature that you have from your carrier? Or do they not know you're tethering? Or you have the wifi hotspot as part of the regular usage for your plan?
Have you tried the google weireless tether apk instead of the stock wifi hotspot?

Thanks for the replies people.
I was on ARHD and had issues there as well. Also I only ever use the stock WiFi hotspot, the HTC one.
I'm with BOOST Mobile, a MVNO on the Telstra Australia network. I have been informed on a local forum that tethering is not restricted with our plan/deal, so there should be NO issue from the network end. Mobile internet works without any problems.
I'll have to look at that, the Google Wireless Tether apk, hadn't thought of that, will report back.

So I've been a longtime foxfi -> PDANet user and ever since 4.3 dropped I've lived without tether. It wasn't THAT big a deal for me since I tether in emergency situations only and they don't come up often but now that I'm on the S5 and root has dropped I realized it's time to get tethering as a backup working.
So my question is what's the current best wifi tether option for the S5 if you've rooted it? I don't mind paying for an app if there's no free version that does the same thing or just to support a good developer. I've found things like wifi tether:

but every one I've found seems old and hasn't been updated in quite a long time.
Any feedback much appreciated.

Grandfathered unlimited with no option to use the built-in Mobile Hotspot without giving up the unlimited. I use MAYBE 500MB-1GB tethering a month and I'm not willing to give up unlimited for the ability to tether those rares times especially since pulling into the parking lot of a starbucks has worked for those emergencies in the last few months.

That WiFi tether is OK to use. The core system has not been updated in a while, but if you look into the project a little deeper, you will find that the S4 just received it's own configuration into the tether.
With the S5 recently obtaining root, I'm sure the configuration will be patched in soon.
I am using 3.4pre1 (experimental). There are only two issues I came across.
1) The Logging portion fails.
2) If you are connected to a wifi hotspot, then start wifi tether, you will loose the configuration for that specific SSID. Don't worry, though, as a reboot will fix this.
Also, I use the S4 device profile. It seems there is somewhat smoother operations with this.

It seems to work but I had some issues when I was connected to Wifi when I started to initiate the tether and actually if I was even in a place where I had a signal for a saved wifi. Forgetting the wifi networks in my house and it worked which I guess is ok since I wouldn't ever be using it someplace where I had another Wifi to connect to.
But I wouldn't mind figuring out how to use wanam xposed to do it, if there's a way to.

I have grandfathered unlimited data with AT&T and successfully enabled the built-in hotspot by using the "Disable tethering provisioning" option in WanamXposed

Question: What to you do to make it work? I tried this and it still fails. I go to turn it on and a dialog pops up, says "Checking" and then turns off.

Sorry, please disregard my last post. While I had one initial session working and could access the portable hotspot on my Mac, it seems to no longer work.

I can 100% confirm however that the Xposed module "X Tether" enables native tethering correctly...I am posting using it now
Ha ha! You beat me to it! Yes native tethering works indeed. Head to

Yes it does seem to. Allows me to use native app, doesn't mess up wifi if connected already. I think I'll use this method. I'll just eat the $2.50 for wifi tether router I guess.
Thanks Scott.
I was wondering if there's a workaround to the T-Mobile tether throttle on the One plan. I'm currently waiting on my replacement but was hoping to be able to get the workaround running asap. Thanks in advanced!
i am wondering the same thing about this and if there is a way to bypass the 480p cap on it ..
You can just turn binge on, off. No more 480p cap.

Not under the new plan. You have to pay to turn off Binge On.

That should totally be against the law. If i want to use up all my data watching netflix at full video quality it is my prerogative I say.

Well, that is just the beginning of not so nice things within the new plan. The new plan is really about throttling users after a small amount of data. Unlimited, just not unlimited high speed. Which is the reason I stayed with my old plan.

So true.
Forgot to mention about T-Mobile making Tethering users to be as monsters in their campaigns.

T-Mobile One is unlimited data, no buckets, so you're gonna use up infinity data at full quality with your proposal
My guess is you could root and probably use a 3rd party app to tether at LTE speeds. I've been wondering the same thing myself so I'm following to see what everybody else says lol
I have tried WiFi Tether Router by Fabio Grasso, but it doesn't help. Tried all different settings/methods combinations. Still tethers at the same speeds as Android native tethering.
I also tried changing User Agent string on my tablet and laptop to clone my Nexus 6's string but still not helping.
I did use to tether heavily, many months of around 300 GBs of data with this app "Wifi Tether Router". It's perfect for bypassing quotas, but so far not working for throttling.
Interesting fact: T-Mobile is letting speedtest.net traffic through without throttling, so if you run it, you'll notice it shows LTE speeds. However, if you run any other test like speedof.me (which is my favorite!) you'll be throttled.
I'll keep you guys posted when I figure it our. Shouldn't take long.

Have you tried a VPN?
You can download "WiFi Tether Router" in the Playstore, if you're rooted, it gives you unlimited tethering.

You have to edit build.prop file. You can do that easily by downloading the app called "BuildProp Editor" in the Playstore. Then look for the string called "net.tethering.noprovisioning" and set it to true. then it should be working no problem.
Any solution yet to this???
Found a kinda solution. I downloaded foxfi and the key (if you need the key I can send you the link) and turned it on and chose "run proxy" then connect your laptop, PlayStation, Xbox etc to the proxy and it will tether more than 500kbps I'm using my hotspot to watch Netflix on my PlayStation right now and there's hardly any buffer time so it's working for me.
Ugh wish I would've found this thread before the I upgraded to xfinity wifi...just got a $177 bill the other day so pissed

Method 1 – Dun = 0 [Android Only]
Requirements: Windows PC, USB cable
Download the ADB and Fastboot installer from XDA-developers. Select Yes when prompted by installation options (install ADB and fastboot, install system-wide, and install drivers).
Enable USB Debugging on your phone/tablet.
Connect your phone to your computer via USB cable.
Open up the command prompt.
Click Start, in the search Type in cmd. Next, Click on the program cmd (or Command Prompt).
Type “adb shell” and press enter.
Don’t type the quotation marks “”, just the text inside them!
Type “settings put global tether_dun_required 0” and press enter.
Note: If you see “error: device not found” it is usually because A) you need to update your phone USB drivers on your PC or B) your USB cable isn’t capable of transmitting data because it is only designed to charge the phone or C) USB Debugging isn’t enabled.

- Got this from Groovypost.com ... It also says you can change your TTL setting in the registry to 65 and that also works...
Here's the link for more info: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/hide-data-usage-get-truly-unlimited-tethering-tmobile-one/

Do you still get throttled to 128kbs or whatever?
