What can I customize without root? - Verizon LG G2

I'm a new G2 owner, picked up a used Verizon G2. I'm going to wait till the KitKat OTA is out and proper root/unlock is achieved by the devs here.
Till then, what can I change on the phone since things like Xposed obviously won't run. I tried a different theme for the launcher but it doesn't really change much. Is it possible to theme the settings/dialer etc? I'd prefer them to be dark themed.

Without root you can only use the stock themes from LG. You can Google lgworld and get a few more themes from LG.

There are a lot of themes in Google Play, LG Smartworld themes are mostly lame (very cartoony) but there are a couple of gems. Lastly, go to the themes and apps sub forum on the main lg g2 forums there are a couple of theme threads there (shameless plug, I've built a bunch of themes follow the link in my signature)

Hi, I've installed it on my HP Touchpad. But only checkboxes are a little bit different, the rest seems normal. No Metro Ui or sth like that.

Yeah much better. Now Gmail and Astro File Manager are usable again. They had black background before. Nice job! Go on! Can you change icons of wifi etc?
Little review after using for some minutes
Nice theme but still needs some more changed images. E.g. the notification drawer looks a bit odd with the black notifications on grey bg. Also the bottom bar should get white instead of blue when dragging down. Also dislike the black calendar, (which crashes btw everytime about 3sec after launch) but that's just me.
Apart from that, it seems like a really solid base for an awesome theme! Just try to get the Android look fully away for the Metro look. At the time
it is a mashup of both. I would gladly buy it for some bucks if it gets better and better.
Cheers

Thanks for the feedback. I also thought of leaving the calendar white, like in my WP7 Revolution theme for CM9, but I know that most of the users like battery saving themes. For now I'll focus on the dark version since it is the hardest.

[Q] Anyone using Themer?

I just saw this newly developed app, Themer: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mycolorscreen.themer&hl=en
Is anyone using it? How does it work? I guess the easiest solution is just to install it. But the waiting list is so long. I want to know if this app can install a homescreen theme without purchasing the apps that the original designers used. Thanks.
Looks like you can do the same stuff with exposed framework
Sent on my Moto X
yeah. I am using it. waiting for more themes. I check it every couple of days to see if I like any of them.
I'm not 100% sure what will happen if you get a theme that used widgets you don't have. The themes that come preinstalled use Themer widgets that come with the launcher so they work out of the box on any phone. One of the widgets is very powerful like uccw.
Sent from my Moto X.
Well, the waiting period was shortened. With this code "MSTRCD" I was able to use Themer...after five minutes, I decided to uninstall it for such reasons as: 1, not really customizable after I applied a theme. For instance, I cannot resize a widget. 2, There is no simple way to switch a default app if I change my mind later.
Themer indeed can do multiple homescreens. But again, it is hard to Create anything new.
So far, the major downside of Buzz is it consumes more rams than Themer.
If you are interested in using it now, I got the code from here: http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/10/10/grab-this-themer-beta-invite-code-good-for-40000-uses-and-help-mycolorscreen-test-its-beefed-up-servers/

I guess I am just trying to see the main difference between Themer and Buzz launcher. With Buzz, for the widgets to work, which I do not already have, I need to download them. Some recent screens on mycolorscreen require Zooper Widget that costs $2...and Buzz cannot yet do the overlapping widgets. I wonder Themer can actually solve all of them together and remain to be free.
Oh, forgot to ask one more question: the biggest thing with Buzz, for me at least, is to be able to have multiple wallpapers. Can Themer do various homescreens in case I like three or four screens?
Thanks guys for the input.

I bet most people that build themes will use the included widgets and other built-in features. You can have as many pages you want and can have different wallpapers for each of them. Have a look at this video about how to theme with Themer...

I've had it for about a week and I like it. Like said above , it needs more themes but that will most likely not be a problem when it is out of beta. And to the post above it is actually still very customizable. More that the stock launcher but not as much as something like nova. I am impressed by it and can't wait to see what they bring in the future.

Got a free code for Themer: TJMUH7. Enjoy
I tried it, but concluded that Themer is basically for the less experienced and the lazy users. The biggest problem with it is that it requires you to set it as your default launcher, which means that you lose all the useful features of nova launcher or whatever custom launcher you had before. No matter how simple it is to switch themes, the launcher is too important to the overall android experience to replace it.
With that said, if you take the time, you can port whatever full theme you like from mycolorscreen.com using the appropriate apps and get proper theming without replacing your launcher. Personally, themes are not a big deal because I feel like I will get bored of it very quickly. So I just stick with changing the wallpaper once a week and call it day.
Its a pretty cool app that makes theming your phone really easy by just selecting the theme, downloading it, then apply. It's kind of like the MIUI theme app but I think that was for just lock screens. There was a couple really neat themes I liked, I just couldnt sacrifice all of my nova launcher settings for this launcher. Plus having quick access to my most frequently used apps on the desktop was a must.

I agree. Why not make your own? There are some really nice features. The themer everything widget just like uccw but imo better implemented. You can easily, without another app, set different wallpapers for each page. I'm pretty optimistic that it will turn into a great launcher, possibly better than the competition.

They just removed this from the voting yesterday, maybe they are adding this in soon?
I ultimately stopped using themer for the time being due to lack of functionality with G+ and Hangouts. I really like the unread SMS and Email counter that you can add (like I did with my modified "Now" theme), but something similar should/could be added for G+, Hangouts and surely other things that people use (voice, skype, IRC...)
BTW, I have nothing to do with this app. I'm fighting my hardest to stay stock/unrooted with my Moto X and themer is pretty nice helper when I start to get bored.

[Q] themer beta on nook. Is it possible? alternatives?

I'm new to the androidverse (bought a nook hd 8gb on black friday, $79.00 woot!) I came across an app called themer beta, but google play sez it's not compatible with my nook (this version is incompatible). I've modified my nook by using a Carbon rom (many thanx to leapinar). I'm interested in themer because it's touted as rainmeter for android (love rainmeter on my desktop & laptop). Is there anyway to find out why themer is incompatible and bypass or fix the incompatibilty? Also, are there any alternatives to themer that will work on the nook hd?
Many thanx

Do you have screen shots for what you are looking for for "switches"?
Root
Install G2 Xposed Settings.
You can get KitKat icons, Immersive Mode, hide stupid status bar icons, Transparencies, etc
Then download Tex_Droider from Play Store and change DPI to 380 or 400 (I use 400).
Enjoy a completely unique feel with the stability and feature set of a stock rom.
I also use Nova and find a good icon pack.

I know CM themes allow the changes of the switches. You are wanting a stock Google experience.
I know Xposed has XThemer engine that can theme stuff similarly to CM but I don't know how deep it goes. I've just done Circle Battery and G2 Setting modules. I'm sure Xposed + Theme Engine would work.
CM is built off AOSP, vanilla android. The picture I posted is definitely not that. That picture is from every G2 stock Rom aside from Verizon.
For whatever reason, Verizon changed their version.

Yea I figured out the tab view after I had to return my first G2 to Verizon (camera refused to focus) and the in store model had it. I appreciate all the info/tips guys.
Flex roms were cool but mine kept rebooting whenever I used Qi. I ran AeonFlex though, not cloudy.
Rippley, in your picture, you have AOSP and LG next to each other. AOSP on the left, LG skin on the right.
The only way to change those are through Xposed Themer Engine or flash another rom with them baked in.

Ahh I see that now..I'm a retard, my bad. Ignore the picture on the left. The switch style on the right is what I was after. The Verizon version has a "slider" (like in mademans post)
style switch and the other variants have the style from the picture on the right. It's not a huge deal, just one of the things that caught my eye while playing with the working display at Best Buy, then seeing what I actually got once I bought a Verizon version...kinda bothered me for whatever reason.
Also, reading up on the roms available, as well as the flex ports. There seems to be issues with just about every rom available. No MMS, FCs, etc.

Xtheme_engine_beta5

If you're using xposed installer and want a little more theming capability then try this out. Its an xposed module. You'll have to download it as well as some themes to work with it. It doesn't change style of icons really it more or less changes some colors/ windows. Due to the us variants not having custom recovery and the ability to flash a deodexed ROM it lacks the ability to theme what all it should but does add a few subtle changes. I've been using it for a couple years with out any problem.
Its not my work so I'm not taking credit for it just passing it along for others to enjoy. It works fine with my T-Mobile D959. There is a thread on XDA somewhere with a ton of CM/AOKP themes port to work with it. And on a deodexed system it does /changes as much as the CM based ROMs are changes by themes from the app market. I'm using the original COBALT theme at the moment and have used pitch black and HUE themes. Those seem to do the most theming. Those also make your Google now black and SMS and phone app changes a little to. Most every app downloaded from the play store will be themed like normal due to them not being odexed. OK enough of the jibber jabber. Here's a drop box link to the xthemer beta5 module and a few themes I have on hand.
Again not my work just passing along. And I'm not responsible for you making really nice soap dish out of your phone.

HUE theme:

Liquid theme:

Those are just a few I've been using. And like I said there is a thread about this module with tons of CM/AOKP themes ported to work with this mod. Happy theming.
4-14-14 Update to the Original Post:
I did some searching for any one wanting more info on Xtheme Beta. Here is the Original post about the module and the Developer that created it. Please thank him or donate. He goes into detail about the apk and theming. He also explains 2 different ways to port CM/AOKP themes to work with Xtheme Beta.
I'm also including a couple links to some XDA forums where several people have already ported a bunch of themes.
Read and make your own decision to use or not . I'm not responsible for your lack of following instruction, I'm just the messenger.
Give thanks to those that created these themes and apk. Not me.

I mostly use the COBALT or the HUE theme. Those two seem to do the most to the odexed stock rom we use. But lately Ive been using the "HKTHEMER" for xposed installer. It can be found in the download tab in xposed installer. It lets you use all these same themes but you have the option to pick which apps get themed and which do not. With stock launcher I theme everything it will let me. But when Im running the GOOGLE NOW LAUNCHER I theme eveything with COBALT except the "Googlewidgetssearchbar.apk". For that i use the Pitch Black theme. It makes the grey are of the search bar shorter in height than the word "GOOGLE" and the mic icon on it as well. Just like the looks of it. But regaudless which launcher I use I dont theme the google keyboard since i use a themed google keyboard with the top row numbers..

I am using hkthemer as well. None of the themes seem to work the way they should. Battery icon is always really small and looks weird. The signal bars and clock colors or style never theme either. I used to love the unicon app for theming app icons which doesn't work either. I figured after I deodexed everything would work.
