On windows mobile, I had an app that allowed me to create a white list of users, and easily set (and unset) it so that only calls from people on that white list would ring the phone, everyone else would go straight to voicemail. Is there such an app for Android?
I used it when I was sleeping, so that calls from trusted people who wouldn't call unless it was important would wake me, while random calls from people who fail to comprehend 'I work 3rd shift and sleep during the day' would go to voicemail. I know individual entries in contacts can be set to ring straight to voicemail, but it's way too much hassle to manually set a bunch of contacts to ring to voicemail, and no help for calls from numbers NOT in my contact list.
Well There is a app called callblock that you either set it to ignore certian numbers or you set it to block unknown numbers... (theres also one for sms too)
You could use Locale like this if your shifts are consistent times:
1. Setup a 'Sleep' situation based on time conditions that mutes notifications and rings.
2. Setup a higher rated 'Trusted Contacts' situation switching the ringer on for calls from your selected contacts.
I used to use Locale like this on my G1 - I'm waiting on manually switched situations (planned upgrade to Locale) to start using Locale again on my Magic.
Just click on a contact and scroll all the way down and it should say send calls from this contact directly to voicemail or something like that

Yeah, like I said, doing this for all my contacts doesn't work, cos I'd be doing it and undoing it every day, plus this is no help for calls from numbers I don't know.

I can't find call block in the market. I searched this forum, and someone mentioned not being able to find call block after upgrading to cupcake. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3860495#post3860495
Have you got the apk for call block?
i cant even find this callblock app....there's no solution?.....for the Iphone i had like 2 apps for it and for the Fuze i had an app for it....wuz good wit the Market....i can't ever find anything....Cyrket n da barcodes are a lifesaver
Grab a copy of Reverse Lookup Plus.
You can choose to "lookup" any unknown call, get caller info, and then you can decide to added it to a blocked-list that auto sends it to voicemail.
I --believe-- this is the Call Block all grown up and renamed.
For my purposes, locale was the answer, once I got it set up properly. I set a condition of 'contact', listing the people I want the phone to ALWAYS ring if they're calling, and set the action to 'volume max'. Then I made sure this was at the top of my list in locale, since higher on the list is higher priority. The locale help has instructions about this, using 'VIP callers' as an example.
I can't seem to find Locale or Reverse Lookup Plus from the market?

The first result is locale. YOu can scan the 2d barcode on the page with your phone, and the phone will ask if you want to open the link with your browser or with the market. click market, it'll take you straight to locale.
I seem to have a recurring issue. I can not make a phone call from my contacts list. If I go to my contacts and tap call mobile or call home it does not launch the phone. It does nothing. If I tap email or sms it works fine. The only way I can make a phone call is to manually type the number in. I have tried different roms from different people and I have the same issue.
Has anyone come across this? Is this a common issue ? Is there a fix for it ?

Might be able to help out more if we knew what ROM you are using. I do not have this issuse and have used Miri, Duttys and PhamQuang ROMs.
I have used the wm6.5 energy Leo rom, I 've used Miri's 6.5 v9 manila 2.5 rom and Dutty's 6.5 R4 rom and they have all done the samething. Right now I currently have Dutty's 6.5 Leo R4(MSVC) rom installed. The funny this is that at first it worked just fine but when I started adding the contacts I used the most to the quick launch in the contacts list is when this started happening. The other roms did it right off the bat.

what other programs do you have installed on your phone? do you have other apps that include contacts functionality? also, are you trying to call from the Manila contacts app or the Windows contacts app? can you call contacts that are not on your People (Favorites) page? i have no problems initiating calls from the Windows and Manila contact apps by tapping "Call Mobile", "Call Home", etc. given your issue is not ROM specific, i'm inclined to believe its related to software or something stored with your contacts.
i have no other contact apps installed. i can not make any calls from quick contact list or from the "all people" list

after you flash a ROM, how are you reloading your contacts? if syncing, what is the source? after your next flash, i recommend adding a few contacts manually (3-5) and then determine if you can initiate calls from the by tapping "Call Mobile", "Call Home", etc. if you can, then reload your existing contacts and try initiating calls again. if it doesn't work, then the next item (in the process of elimination steps) is to review your contacts for info that could be causing the problem. fyi, i'm using MS Exchange to store and reload my contacts after flashing a ROM.
I am syncing with my PC and pulling my contacts from outlook. does it make a difference if you add a contact to the favorites list having the phone number or sms number as the number saved to quick contacts ?
I just noticed that if I go to start menu, click contacts, I can make calls that way.
The only apps I have installed is, tomtom7, slide to unlock and tweak HD
OK I finally found the problem In tweak HD if you go down to 1.8 phone pad style. I had it set to windows because i don't like the slide to answer call. When I put this setting back to HD (default) I was able to make calls from the manilia people tab and all contacts list.
So I guess I'll just have to choose either to not use the manilia people tab to make calls so I can answer the phone using the phone soft key, or use the people tab and have to deal with the slide to answer call. Unless there's another way to disable the slide to answer call

ahhhh... yeah, it's typically something we install and forgot or we assume it didn't have any impact on our issue. fyi, you don't have to use slide-to-answer to answer a call. i never use it, lol, i always use the send key (key to the left of the home key) to answer calls or the end key to ignore the call. glad you got it sorted out.
yea amazing. As you can see it drove me crazy. I found the solution by accident. The only thing I hate now is when I get a call the caller ID from slide to unlock comes up ( which is the one I prefer ) and the windows/manila one keeps flashing on top of it.
Otherwise Dutty's rom seems pretty solid
Camera zoom
I noticed that I do not have the zoom function with this rom, which I knew already, but if I was to install the old camera cab to get the zoom function back would I lose the ability to take pics at 5megs ?
Also I have tweak HD installed and it unlocked some good features like burst and sport, would I lose those functions ?
What is the best call blocking program for the aria? It needs to have a whitelist to only allow people I specify to reach me. Thanks in advanced
Not exactly a direct solution on the Aria, but doesn't Google Voice allow you to filter calls? Again, I don't know about blocking.. but at the very least you can direct calls you don't want directly to voicemail.
i actually found this option today while going through my contacts. if you actually choose a contact and view his/her contact information. there is a menu down option to automatically send that person to voicemail whenever they call. i've already set a few to that option, but have yet to test it.

I tested it today, works GREAT!!! the phone doesn't even ring they just go right to VM
i use an app called Driodblock. there is a feature in it that tells you to block all calls except for your contacts (under scene mode). i think that is what you are looking for
i use it to block telemarketers or any unknown calls, which is what it's useful for. it does however tell you that the person called, but you dont hear the ring or anything, it goes straight to voicemail. you can also set it up so that that person gets hung up on so they dont get vmail LOL
the only problem is that if you search for droidblock in the market app, it doesnt show up. you have to search under "block calls" and it'll show up.
Yep, the two best ones are made by the same company:
Root Call Blocker (for general use):
https://market.android.com/details?id=fahrbot.apps.rootcallblocker.beta
Call Master (for advanced users):
https://market.android.com/details?id=fahrbot.apps.blacklist
These are the only blockers that completely block everything without turning the screen on. Need to be rooted though.
I use the option under contacts if it's someone I would rather leave a voicemail than talk to.
I use an app called call filter for numbers where the caller id is unknown. It has additional options for blocking specific numbers, but I've never needed it.
I've registered my phone numbers on the national do not call registry. I don't get telemarketing calls. If I ever do receive one, I will go to that same site and report the number. I've only received two telemarketing calls in the past 4 years having my number registered there.
You could use blocking apps to help you
Some apps on the Google Play provide you esay ways to block the unwanted calls.
Such as WhosCall, Call Blcoker ,Mr Number, Caller ID and so on.
You could try it. But don't install all of them at once since it would make your phone slow.
I usually use WhosCall which can search the strange phone number and provide a easy way to block them.
Hope it could help you.
We make the two best ones - root call blocker and call master. Both in my sig. Enjoy.

Has anyone yet figured out a way to not have the Captivate log every single text and call you make?
It is so annoying to have to hunt all through my phone looking for tracks. Originally I assumed that they could be erased by deleting the thread in messaging. Wrong!
So then go to the contact/history and delete it there. Wrong! There is nothing in the history tab.
So then open the dialer, go to call log and look, every sent and recieved text, mms, and call is logged there as well. Its like a paranoid secret agent designed this system.
And heaven forbid that you installed a second messaging program such as Handcent to log everything all over again.
I currently use Horizon to keep my private texts private, but even that allows the outgoing texts to be logged.
Yes, deleting the thread, then selecting every individual item in the log from the unwanted caller works. Or even deleting the entire call log at once will work. But short of that has anyone come up with a work around for the call logging intrusion?
Found "Not log this call" on the market to auto delete phone calls log (Not free).
For sms you can edit the text message limit and reduce it to 1. This will at least keep 1 text message in store before it gets deleted. But default it's set to 200 msg per conversation and 20 mms per conversation.
Interesting. I looked at that app, I may have to try it.
Did you actually get your message inbox to go to 1? Mine will only go down to 10.
I am currently testing it to see if it erases the call log history as it erases the inbox but I dont think it does.
Ok, so setting the message limit to 10 only deletes the messages, not the logs.
However, while playing with it I found out that by selecting one of the logged entries (text or call) it pulls up a history type page. From there you can select the bottom left soft key, choose delete and then choose select all. I am not sure but I think it only deletes one page at a time or something as it seems to leave a few behind. I am still playing but its a hell of a lot better that trying to select each individual log in the main log screen. Its sort of what you would expect the history tab in the contact screen to do. (especially if you came from WinMo )
I hope someone else finds this helpful. I did a lot of searching and found a lot of complaints about this awful "feature" but no answers. This isnt much of an answer but its seems a bit more tolerable since I figured the history part out.
It also seems to be something Samsung adds as Evo and the Droid don't do it.
Check out HistoryEraser. I think I saw it on Lifehacker a few days ago, supposed to wipe away all your unwanted tracks.
Has anybody else tried this?

I did and it works OK, but I have a couple of questions I'm hoping someone can help me out with. First, the 'get location' task seems to run fairly often throughout the day despite no text messages coming in (with or without the magic word). I notice this just by the gps icon appearing at the top fairly often and in the battery usage stats. If I disable the task in tasker, then the symptom goes away.
Is there a way to prevent this from occuring and still keep the usability of the hack? It drains needless battery by finding my location 50+ times a day.
Second, I have it set up according to the directions so a text from a specific number with a specific word sends an SMS back to the same specific number with the location. I know I can make it just act on a key word from ANY number, but is there a way to set it up so it'll send the response text back to ANY number that sends a text with the magic word?
Finally, in the SMS response, I'm trying to format it so the coordinates are a link that I can just tap on and get a google map. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get a hyperlink to work. Right now I have it text the location response to a google voice number. Even if I format the text like this: "http://maps.google.com/maps?q=31.9xxxx,-110.9xxxx" it doesn't show up as a clickable link, I have to copy and paste it into a browser and then it shows on the map. Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks!
First off, if I was trying to find my Nexus One and found an iPhone, I'd be pissed.
Couple things... First off, there's a thread here on XDA about creating such a set of profiles, you might check into it.. I have a long standing debt to dump my profiles for this very thing there, but they need rework and I just haven't taken the time to do it yet. :/
So in the last year (that article you point to was written 8/10) Tasker has gotten the ability to get its location by command, so there's no need for a context for it. Just use the Get Location command in your SMS Received task. It'll grab it only when it needs it. Make sure that you make it grab it AFTER the SMS match, or it'll grab GPS every SMS you get.
And to make it respond to a specific number or the number you're sending from, both are easy... To respond to the number you're sending from just make that a separate command that uses the SMS From Last variable and responds to it, not your fixed number. And similarly if you want to respond to an arbitrary fixed number, again, a different command.
You need to go beyond the article and learn Tasker a little.
For sending a map link, I KNOW somewhere I have a link I'm using but I can't find it... Googling is getting me nothing. It was like goog.le/q=lat,lon, but your problem appears to be more that it's not showing up as a link in your particular SMS client, dunno about that.
Thanks khaytsus! I think I did figure out my first problem. I had two profiles, one to get location, and another to respond to the SMS (which used the get location profile). Both profiles were active (had a check mark) when it turns out the location one shouldn't have. After seeing your post though I deleted the location profile and just added a task to use the 'get location' option that you mentioned.
I'll now try to figure out the part about responding to any SMS number.
If you happen to know where that other thread is I'd appreciate a link, I've tried searching but Tasker is mentioned so much it gets a ton of hits. I did get it to work like I wanted though. I just deleted the required incoming phone number match on the condition and replaced the number in the outgoing text response with "%SMSRF" and it works great now. I tried it with my wife's iphone and the response even shows up as a hyperlink! Odd that when I send it from the google voice inbox the response isn't hyperlinked. Oh well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052249
This is the thread I'm referring to, although there are actually multiple ones out there. I think this one is getting some traffic. I really intended to dump my profiles and tasks to let people use 'em but to be honest I don't even KNOW what I'm using.. I'd have to go through the whole thing, I have a lot of nonsense Tasks in Tasker I'm not even using.. Ahem.
Thank you so much
Thanks for sharing
