[Q] Pull data with broken screen - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I googled and searched the forum but none o the threads apply to my problem as far as I can see. :/
So my old phone finally dies more or less... and I am trying to get the picture from the internal storage.
My setup: I9000, running CM11 (not sure which nightly exactly), rooted, BUT usb-debugging could be off I dont know for sure.
I can go to recovery mode but as the screen is broken I am limited with my actions. So using
Code:
adb devices
I can see my device
Code:
<long number here> recovery
Here is what I tried:
Code:
adb pull / H:/backup
This does not work because after a short while it aborts with an error message: "... no such file or directory"
Using
Code:
adb shell
followed by cd sdcard gives me a "cant cd to sdcard"
If I try to cd into other directories they are empty when trying to list them with ls.
su is also not found but adb root shows that it is already running as root.
Afterwards I tried Android Commander but that also did not work for me because Android Commander did not show my device and it also crashed after a while.
To make a long story short I am desperate...
What else can I try to get my data?

I don't think you can just PULL the whole "/" partition. The long number you listed there is likely to be your IMEI number (Just a guess).

[Q] Need help installing a recovery image

I have a Sprint HTC Hero which until yesterday had never been rooted. Software version was 2.31.651.7. I'm trying to install CM6 using these instructions.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_Sprint_Hero_with_Android_2.1
I have rolled it back to 2.27.651.5, as suggested in the above article and I used the universal root method, which seems to have worked. Then when I started the Flashing Radio step I realized that they left out how to install a custom recovery image. I searched and found these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4898505
After figuring out what adb and fastboot are, I was able to run 'adb devices' which shows:
List of devices attached
HT99RHF03843 device
I then ran 'adb shell reboot bootloader' which gave me the screen with the three androids riding skateboards. Info from that screen:
HERC XC SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.47.0000 (HERO20000)
MICORP-0110
TOUCH PANEL-SYN0104
RADIO-2.42.01.04.27
Mar 1 2010,16:02:39
When I try to run 'fastboot boot recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img' I get:
downloading 'boot.img'... FAILED (remote: not allow)
This is were I'm stuck. 'fastboot devices' shows:
HT99RHF03843 fastboot
I've tried searching and most of what I found is over a year old and says something about a perfect SPL, but I gotta believe there is some way around this. I do believe the root worked because I can do an 'adb shell' then 'su' and I get the # prompt. If I can't get a custom image on I'm just going to buy a new phone so I'm willing to risk bricking the phone to get this to work. If anyone knows a way around this I would greatly appreciate some assistance. Thanks.

1. I think you have the latest radio - might not need to flash a new one.
2. About flashing recovery, it's pretty easy -
a. Download the recovery image you want and put it on the SD card (not in any folder)
b. Goto ADB shell and run following commands:
- "flash_image recovery </sdcard/image name>" without quotes and "<>" - replacing image name with the actual file name with extension that you saved to the SD card
- reboot recovery
I am assuming once rooted, you can get to adb shell from your computer.
Let me know if you have further questions.
Thanks for the suggestion here is where I'm at now.
adb shell puts me at the $ prompt, when I type 'flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img' from there I get 'flash_image: permission denied'. I also get that if I type gibberish for example if I type 'djherjn' i get 'djherjn: permission denied'. If I use 'su' to get to a # prompt, then run the command I get 'flash_image: not found', If I type gibberish at the # prompt I get 'djherjn: not found'. So it looks like it does not recognize the command flash_image. I checked path using 'echo $PATH' on both prompts it returns '/sbin:/system/sbin:/system/bin:/system/xbin'. Odd thing is there is no /system/sbin directory and flash_image is not located in any other directory. I'm starting to think the phone isn't really rooted. But when I run the universal root again it says phone is already rooted.
You are missing some words on the flashing I think...try this instead.
Connect your USB from the phone to PC choose Charge only.
Now open up Command Prompt(CMD) and type adb shell. Then just to be safe type SU...if SuperUser asks for permission on your phone, give it permission. Should give a # sign instead of $.
Then type ---- flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img
You forgot the /sdcard/ from what I read from your post.
With the device set to charge only, adb does not see it. I've been having to set it to HTC Sync, just tried again to make sure. I'm still getting 'flash_image: not found' when I type the command 'flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img' from the # prompt. I also tried 'cd sdcard' and then 'flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img' still same error. 'ls sdcard' does show the image in that directory and I'm using copy and paste to avoid typos. I'm still thinking it is complaining that there is no flash_image command. I'm going to re-flash it with the HTC software and start over just in case I screwed something up.
I had the same problem.
Before you go ahead with flashing HTC software, try the ROM manager app from the market. You could flash the ClockWorkMod recovery from ROM manager.
If that does not work, don't waste any more time - go the RUU route (preferbaly using the 2.27.651.5 release) and root using: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572.
I just went through a bunch of issues with recovery/backup/restore and such, so consider this fresh advice ;-).

EDIT: Andy beat me to it!
If you want Amon-Ra you have to choose Flash Alternate Recovery.
Finally got it! I used the ROM manger app. I swear last night when I was considering it, I only saw the paid version. That was so much easier then what I was doing. Thanks everyone for your help. It is highly appreciated.

[GUIDE] HOW to downgrade HTC Legend 2.2 to 2.1 to enable root

Hey guys, it took me 3 whole days to find the right way to downgrade.
Note: This is to be done at your own risk; I am not responsible for any damage or harm caused by this process.
Note: Information in this guide is taken from the works of following Authors:
1. wag3slav3: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725430)
2. Paul (http://android.modaco.com/content/ht...rom-froyo-ota/)
3. TheDeadCpu: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746454)
Please Follow the Instructions Carefully; to ensure success!
Items Required:
1. HTC Legend
2. 1 MicroSD Card (Gold Card)
3. 1 Micro USB Cable
4. Full Charge Recommended
5. Windows OS (I used W7)
Other Stuff:
1. Android SDK
2. hack4legend-v5.zip
3. RUU 1.31 for Legend
Common Errors Faced in the Process:
1. c---rw---- INSTEAD OF crwxrwxrwx
2. ADB Server timed out
3. Various RUU Errors
4. Visionary Not Working/Opening
Troubleshoot:
When you attempt to root you may face ADB timed out errors, it can be very annoying – there are various reasons for this, for me it was HTC Sync that was conflicting with ADB, shutting it down allowed me to boot into the custom recovery (step2 in the root process).
If you run into various other RUU errors (such as: unable to load boot loader, which was fixed by following step 3 correctly.) while trying to downgrade, most likely you didn’t do it correctly. Try doing it again and it should work.
Visionary Not Working/Opening (Solution: Download from phone browser: http://content.modaco.net/dropzone/c...ryplus.r13.apk)
Recommended to Back up Data:
1. Contacts:
You can save you’re contacts from you’re legend by clicking contacts, menu, import/export and export to SD Card.
2. SMS:
Get the SMS Backup and Restore App form Market, Install and Save it on to the SD Card.
3. Backup Complete SD Card:
Copy all the contents of the SD Card and save it onto the PC.
We start now;
Step 1:
Install Android SDK
Extract hack4legend-v5.zip to C Drive
Step 2:
Have adb in your path, or move the files contained in hack4legend-v5.zip into your sdk/tools directory so your pushes will work properly.
FOR ALL OS's Make sure your phone has Applications->Development->USB Debugging turned on.
Do NOT have your phone in Disk Drive Mode, have it in Charge Only.
Open a terminal window in your /tools/ directory. Type this at the prompt.
Code:
crackin.sh
or in Windows
Code:
crackin.bat
Your phone will reboot 5 times.
You WILL see several error messages.
it looks like this c---rw----
c---rw---- 1 1001 2002 90, 0 Jul 19 16:19 /dev/mtd/mtd0
You’re done with this.
Step 3:
- Temproot with VISIONary r13 (install the downloaded file as per a normal APK)
- Once you are temprooted, connect via 'adb' and do 'su' (to get root) then '/data/local/flash_image misc /data/local/misc1-2.img'
Step 4:
RUN RUU to downgrade to 2.1 – it should be possible to do so now.
Hence, you will be downgraded to 2.1 and you can use the normal way to root your legend.
All I can say is that the CM7 Mod is so fast on the Legend, no lag whatsoever, it's beyond! (will post a video 4 you guys)
End.
Forgive me if i seem rude.Hasn't this been covered in many other threads before?
I searched the site but never found this same method, is a combination of 2 or more guides at one place, also touching on some of the common errors faced when downgrading.
after this command '/data/local/flash_image misc /data/local/misc1-2.img'
it says "flash_image not found"....
So? Find it and put it there via adb.
but this is what i try...
i have both files in c:/hack4/ and in c:/android-sdk-windows/tools/
i wright in command " /c/hack4/flash_image misc /c/hack4/misc1-2.img"
and i have the message "flash_image not found"
am i doing something wrong?
i have also tried "/c/android-sdk-windows/tools/flash_image misc /c/android-sdk-windows/tools/misc1-2.img" the same problem...
What hboot do you have? Look at the guide for YOUR hboot ive had different Hboots across 2 devices and needed to use the right guide for the right hboot

These is supposed to upload the images required on your phone and be exventually be executed on your phone to replace the image
ps: im no expert but i just flashed mine recently and i had to read the guides several times to understand the logic behind each guide to avoid mistakes some had with their phones...

Nooooooooo dammit! You have just pushed both those files to your phone!!!!!!!!! Go to your phone shell via adb, execute su to gain root privileges and then execute flash_image on your phone not on your PC!!!!! It doesn't really matter where on the phone do you have both as long as they are both in /data dir and don't prepend anything!!!
i am very confused now , can yoy help me step by step?
i run on my phone visionairy and then i click on temproot.
then i run on my pc cmd and i give the comand "adb shell" and then i type su and it says #...
after that should i give the next command on the pc again or on my phone, and with what should i replace the /data/local/ ...?
Pay attention dude!
Open two command prompts. Name them ONE and TWO. You gonna use ONE for copying files from your PC to your phone using adb push. You gonna use TWO for connecting from your PC to your phone using adb shell and execute all commands meant to be executed on your phone there. Now use ONE to copy (adb push) a program called flash_image to your phone's directory /data/local. After you do that use TWO to connect to your phone (adb shell), execute su to gain root privileges (you get # prompt) now in the same commnd prompt (that's TWO) change permissions of program flash_image you have just copied to your phone in ONE. Then also on TWO execute flash_image program with parameters from above.
If you don't understand what I'm saying you better sell that phone and instead use phone booth. In fact sell all your hi-tech stuff including your PC. It would be much safer for you and even for us.

my friend i pretty sure that you know much than i do...
but for your information i am 48 and i am the last 20 years involved with computers and mobile phones.... over that 20 years i have learned at least to follow instructions (if they are clear), so once again thanks for your help.
my problem was that after unistalling sync 3.0 and installing sync 2.033 i have not uninstalled the drivers so i had problem.
after fixing that everything went smooth.
So after 20 years in computers, you actually found out that the problem was on your side and not in the instructions. Too bad. My mom is also been using computers for more than 20 years. She knows what is monitor and that she can move cursor around with the mouse.
BTW what has version of sync to do with your confusion? You are trying to say that "flash_image not found" error had something to do with sync version? Ohh, give me a break...
And as far as clear instructions are concerned... I guess they are pretty clear if 99 ppl find them OK and one (that's you) doesn't.
Don't want to be rude but maybe 20 years was too much and it is time to start something completely different.

Here's what to do (before having to RUU):
boot into TWRP;
connect USB cable;
adb shell into the device;
Code:
adb shell
see if /sdcard is ok (meaning you didn't mistakenly flash entirely the wrong ROM or something):
Code:
ls /sdcard
if the above shows files is a list of tings you recognize (like Downloads, Ringtones, whatever), two things are ok: i) your data area; and ii) your adb is working, then issue these commands (for good measure):
Code:
umount /system
exit
Using TWRP normally (use the touch screen), Wipe the following: system, cache, dalvik-cache, data;
Now, push a ROM file you want, for now I'd suggest one of the Sense 5.5 ROMs -- at least until the Sense 6 ROMs stabilize a bit more and we've had time to settle out all the new idiosynchrasies). Once downloaded, you'll have some zip file, let's call it "myrom.zip" for the purpose of commands (it'll be something different, just use the actual file name instead of myrom.zip below):
Code:
adb push myrom.zip /sdcard
Using the TWRP touch interface, just install the rom from /sdcard/myrom.zip
Just fyi -- the Sense 6 Roms have been exhibiting some oddities for folks in recoveries -- the issue actually is not the ROM, rather in the ext4 file system and some file system metadata bugs when dropping so many files in one shot as the ROM installer zips are doing. I've been debugging this in my TWRP builds and will be putting an option in to cover for the problem (it's deep in the android of ext4, believe it or not -- the kernel is detecting a problem and remounting the file systems read-only and that's what makes the install fail).
Hope this helps.

Goodness -- I thought you were all setup for adb and understood this stuff.
Here's what you need to do *first*, then follow the instructions above after you get adb working. To "adb shell" in to the phone -- you will boot into TWRP, which starts the adb server on the phone. But you use your computer and a "command terminal" window. We have to have this one way or another, so you have to learn. You will plug in your USB cable to the phone and computer, then the commands will work -- yes, they will work with TWRP.

[GUIDE][UNLOCK BOOTLOADER]Guide to unlocking the bootloader on the L90 [ALL VARIANTS]

Code:
#include
/*
* Your warranty is now likely void.
*
* I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards,
* spontaneous combustion, or any other host of cosmic penalties
* which may befall you, your family, or your phone.
*
*/
Over the last few months development on the LG L90 has made some great strides, up to the point where we can actually install roms! In order to do this, however, you'll need an unlocked bootloader.
The problem that arises is that there are different models of the L90, being the D405, the D405n, the D410 and the D415. For most of the models the unlock process is very similar, but for the D415 another method is needed.
This guide is aimed at explaining the entire unlock process in a complete and simple way, so even if you have no experience flashing custom recoveries or roms at all, you should still be able to follow this guide. If you run into problems, please just post a reply or send me a PM and I'll do my best to help you.
First of all I'd like to note that I did not develop any of the bin files or apks in this guide, I'm only collecting all the unlock methods in one place for easy reference. Therefore I am not responsible for you bricking your device or causing any kind of damage to it. You follow this guide AT YOUR OWN RISK! That being said, let's get to the unlocking!
What you'll need to unlock the bootloader
1. A rooted LG L90
You can root the phone by going to https://towelroot.com in your mobile browser and tapping the lambda sign. Save and install the apk (make sure unknown sources are enabled in "menu > general > security"). Google will warn you about the app, this is because of the exploit which will enable the root access. Execute the program and tap "make it ra1n", then install supersu from the play store. Open supersu and choose to rebuild the binaries. This will fail, but after a reboot supersu should be installed and working properly.
UPDATE: If towelroot doesn't work for you, you've probably got the L90 with an updated firmware. In that case you can follow this guide by @gdjindal to obtain root access. Afterwards you can follow the rest of this guide again.
2. Have adb installed.
just download the Android sdk and install it or, if you don't care about the SDK itself, the minimal adb from the bottom of this post (thanks to @shinobisoft for the upload). Now add the C:/path_to_the_sdk/sdk/platform-tools to your windows PATH variable (Windows 7: right click my computer > properties > advanced system settings > environment variables) or the foler in which adb.exe is located if you downloaded the minimal adb..
On your phone go to "menu > general > about phone > software information" and tap build version a few times untill it says you're a developer, then go to "menu > general > developer options" and enable usb debugging. Connect the phone with your PC and choose to connect in software mode and install the drivers and tools. When you get a message on your phone that your PC want to access usb debugging make sure you check the checkbox and accept. Now open a cmd prompt and type "adb devices" without the quotes. If it shows a series of letters and numbers followed by device, you're good to go. If it says unauthorized, you haven't accepted the prompt on your phone yet. If your device doesn't show up at all you haven't installed the drivers correctly.
3. Find out which device and software version you're running.
Go to menu > general > about phone > Hardware information for your Model number. Mine is LG-D405n, so my model is D405n.
Go to menu > general > about phone > Software information for your Software version. Mine is V10b-EUR-XX, so I've got version v10b.
4.1 If your model number is D405, D405n or D410, you'll need a modified aboot.bin to unlock the bootloader.
Go to the bottom of this post and download the file with your model and software version. I used the L90_D405n_v10b_hack.zip. Extract the aboot.bin in the zip file to a folder on your PC.
4.2 If your model number is D415, you'll need another method to unlock the bootloader, which is explained in this thread made by @aSuperSaiyanG0D.
Unlocking the bootloader on the D405, D405n and D410
1. Open a cmd window an CD to the folder where you've saved the aboot.bin you've downloaded in step 4.1
2. Execute the following commands:
Code:
adb push aboot.bin /storage/external_SD/aboot.bin
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/aboot of=/storage/external_SD/stockaboot.bin
dd if=/storage/external_SD/aboot.bin of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/aboot
Right after the su command, supersu will give you a root request on your phone that you'll have to accept!
This will also make a backup of your current aboot partition as stockaboot.bin on your external SD card. If you don't have an external SD card, this won't work and you'll have to use /storage/emulated/0 (this is a zero, not the letter o) instead of /storage/external_SD/ like this:
Code:
adb push aboot.bin /storage/emulated/0/aboot.bin
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/aboot of=/storage/emulated/0/stockaboot.bin 5429599
dd if=/storage/emulated/0/aboot.bin of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/aboot
3. That's basicly it, you can now install a custom recovery. I suggest downloading the latest TWRP (2.8.0.0 right now) from @shoxxy's thread, which can be found here. Just use ROM Toolbox to install it, choose rom installer, press settings > flash image and select the TWRP image from @shoxxy's thread. Afterwards you can boot to recovery using ROM Toolbox, or by shutting down the phone, holding volume down and power untill the lg logo shows, then releasing and immediately pressing those buttons again. You should get a screen asking to perform a factory reset. Choose yes twice (don't worry, it wont actually perform the reset) and TWRP should boot up. Now you can create backups and install custom roms too!
If you're a fan of cyanogenmod, you should visit @Quarx's thread, which can be found here. His CM11 is already mostly functional (right now on some models the front camera doesn't work and the ir blaster doesn't have any software, but most other functions actually do work very well, while it is faster than LG stock and gives almost twice the battery life), so if you like CM it's a thread worth keeping an eye on.
Flashing back the stock rom (in case of a brick)
If you've bricked your device, or want to revert to stock for any reason, you can follow this guide made by @gdjindal.

So, I did everything, but when I try to do the 4.2, I cant do it.. The reason why is because it says "No stat file"

If you have a problem with step 4.2 only, I assume you have a D415 and you should actually ask this question in the thread that step 4.2 links to. Or isn't that what you meant?
EDIT: please note that step 4.2 is for the D415 ONLY.
Sorry, my bad, I though tha step 4.2 was the wole thing that comes next, my device is D405

No sweat If you've completed step 4.1, just head to step 1 of the next section and you should be good.

Open a cmd screen (go to start > all programs > accessories > Command prompt) and from there run this:
Code:
cd Desktop/Folder_you_put_the_aboot_in
adb push aboot.bin /storage/external_SD/aboot.bin
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/aboot of=/storage/external_SD/stockaboot.bin
dd if=/storage/external_SD/aboot.bin of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/aboot
if you use an external SD card. Else run
Code:
cd Desktop/Folder_you_put_the_aboot_in
adb push aboot.bin /storage/emulated/0/aboot.bin
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/aboot of=/storage/emulated/0/stockaboot.bin
dd if=/storage/emulated/0/aboot.bin of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/aboot
Mind that I've only tested this using the external SD, but it should work both ways.

That is stange, never had that error myself. In that case I would try another way to put the aboot.bin on the root of the SD card (google drive for instance) and continue from the adb shell part..

BTW: what's the output of
Code:
adb devices
?

Can't I just simply paste it on my SD card?
Edit: I think I found what my problem was, something in developer settings..
2nd Edit: Nop, it still gives the same read-only error..
3rd Edit: The output of adb devices is LGD410bc(..) Device

Strange, but yes, you can simply paste it on your SD card and continue from the "adb shell" line. You can also try
Code:
adb shell sysrw
before the push command to mount the filesystem as RW. If you do this, it is recommended to use
Code:
adb shell sync
adb shell sysro
after the psuh command (so you'll mount the filesystem as RO again).

Where did you get the not found message? And what do you mean you flashed stock again? If you couldn't execute the dd commands then your bootloader is still locked and all you've done so far is root the device..
UPDATE: I don't get a response, but it seems this user previously flashed the wrong aboot.bin (or did something else, unfortunately he's not being very clear on that) so please only follow this guide when you have a stock recovery + aboot partition. If you did try some things before, please flash the stock rom back first and then follow this guide.
Thats awesome! Thank you! :cyclops:

Broken Screen, Not Rooted, Lockscreened.

SOLVED
(No success for me personally, but I'd still like to explain how I realised there's no hope left - description is at the bottom of this post)
Hi, not a regular poster in the S3 mini section, but a friend of mine has had his entire screen smashed. Somehow though, the phone is still breathing and can be turned on/off.
The problem is: My friend has asked me to extract his photos and similar media from the device's memory.
The device isn't rooted and I'm not sure if there's a default recovery mode or something like that built in the device.
I've tried connecting the device to my PC and it gets recognized and the drivers install themselves, but the device is empty. Moreover, I've downloaded KIES which also recognized the device, but says that there's a lockscreen and he can't go any further.
Any advices? Most of the other xda answers are for rooted phones so they haven't been very helpful, unfortunately.
There's a picture of the device in the attachments below, and KIES interface aswell.
<<EDIT>>
I'm using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2339530 Recovery operation but it keeps saying "adb.exe" not found. I've installed ADB via the 15sec install ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979 ) and entered the path correctly, but it still can't detect it. Any tips? perhaps i'm using the wrong ADB - I don't have c:\android\platform-tools folder - it's simply c:\adb\adb.exe.
SOLVED PROBLEM:
After messing with this for 2-3 days, I've decided to go with the simplest method - find a way to list all directories on the device and then see if there's anything in "sdcard" or a similar folder. To do this, after ADB recognizes your device, type : adb shell ls -R
adb shell ls -R will list a zillion directories so you may want to save the data into a .txt file. to do this, type adb shell ls -R > output.txt (or any other name).
After that, open the output.txt file and then use ctrl-f to find the sdcard folders and check if there's any data left in them.
IMPORTANT:
I've read that, without root permission, one cannot access the data or sdcard directories. The device I was working on had USB debugging OFF so there was no way I could root the phone in order to access the data directories.
Silly question, but did you use option 2 in RecoverData to change the path of ADB to c:\adb\?

Yup, but it still can't find it. That's why I think the ADB-15sec install might be flawed.
There's a screencap of the Recovery + TotalCMD in the background in the attachments.
<EDIT>
Alright so I've followed an ADB tutorial (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266638), installed all the SDK packages just to be sure.
ADB now recognizes the device after I've booted it into recovery mode. I've tried doing adb pull /data and it says 0 files pulled, 0 files skipped. Does this mean the device's internal memory is blank? No it doesn't, only the folder "data" is blank, other system data is present.
<EDIT 2> Can anyone please tell me the path to the internal camera storage folder? I may have fixed the problem if only I knew the correct path. SOLVED: The correct path is one of 4 combinations, usually these: /mnt/sdcard0/ /mnt/sdcard/ /storage/sdcard0/ /storage/sdcard/
