Nexus forums - Nexus 7 General

Can we have mod look at the possibility of changing the nexus7 forum to either "Nexus 7 2012" or have one nexus 7 forum with sub sections for the 2012 and 2013 editions (like the galaxy ace forum). A lot of people are getting confused and posting in the wrong forum. This increases the risk of incorrect advice being given or incorrect ROMs/kernel's being flashed.
Programming is a race between engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.

That's a good idea. It would definitely make things a lot more clear, especially for new members.

This quote from Rick Cook's Wizadry series brings back memories. I loved that series when I was a kid. You should add it as a sig. :good:

That's a pretty good idea I think... the problem with the N7 is that there are two different versions of a tablet with the same name. Whilst there a lot of similarities, there are also critical differences. A 'noob' (used non-pejoratively - weren't we all 'noobs' once) may seek to flash factory stock on their device... and not thinking it relevant, or they may not know it's importance sufficiently to disclose it in their original post. And thus, they may then receive incorrect advice that could potentially 'brick' their device... such as fastboot flashing a 'grouper' bootloader on a 2013 Nexus 7.
If both devices fell under the same 'umbrella' forum name of Nexus 7, then I think this would mitigate against incorrect advice being given.
Anyway... just my couple of cents... and based on the number of times I've had to redirect next doors mail, it certainly sounds like a good idea.
Rgrds,
Ged.

I think we redirect people on a daily basis its the ones that slip through the net or follow forums without actually posting that worry me. It may be worth re posting this in the nexus7 2013 forum although I think they will get less confused posts due to the forum title.

Android Fanboy's iPhone blog

Hello, My name is Ben and I've been addicted to android since the nexus one and I have a problem.
All kidding aside, I'm an Android superuser/nutjob. I broke my infuse screen late august so I decided to use an iPhone 4 for 30 days (then return it). I haven't used any Apple products since the mid 90's so this is quite a step for me.
http://blgalvin.blogspot.com/
The point of this blog this blog is to attempt a neutral standpoint on the iOS vs Android battle, and inform potential buyers that are "on the fence" I really try to point out that there is no correct answer, it all depends on what the buyer wants/needs.
The reason I'm posting this here is for input from Android users that have used iphones and to post a resource that can be sent to friends/family that are looking for new phones.
Good stuff.

This forum

I have been on xda since my hero days so its been a few years. Didn't join til too long ago. Made some good pals along the way and learned tons.
So far this forum for me is a breath of fresh air. The phone forums are so full of hate, trolls, attacks, name calling, disrespecting developer's work and the usual douche stuff.
Of course its here too, just no where near as bad yet. Yet. I hope it stays that way because its so much nicer to thank people than report them.
This may be a gay post but some mods fell the same way. Anyway, glad I got the n7 and glad I'm here.

Yeah this has been awesome, reminds me of the HD2 forums, at least back when nand android became available, the vivid forums are crazy, these ones are nice.
This forum and the AT&T One X forums have been the best. The OG EVO 4G forums were good in the beginning but it got worse and worse over time. Same thing goes for the Epic 4G Touch. I know I'm guilty of some warranted snarky responses from time to time (Search first!) but I never actually attack anybody on a personal level like I've seen in some other subforums. We are all here for the same purpose so why can't we all just get along?

Just be glad this isn't like the prime forum was in its earlier days..lol. nexus 7 forum is cool. Since I'm unlocked and running custom kernel, I'm more into developement scene now. Never any issues in there. Only everyone working together to put out the best/most stable stuff. NEXUS 7 is an aAzimg little 7in. Tablet. I would've never thought the experience on it would be this good.
Give it time. This forum will degrade just like every single other forum on here.
Not trying to trash XDA, but it just isn't the same community it used to be.

Yep, the more popular a device gets, the more trolling and flaming becomes a problem. It's inevitable.
XDA is legit in general, probably one of the nicest put together forums on the web. The new layout really sets it off.

When your getting the latest updates and everything is flowing as promise there's nothing to ***** about ... besides to Google ...
Its when you go on the older threads where people are angry because they can't get a working ICS build or even a jelly bean .. or too many noobs bricking their devices
It will turn in to that ... after time
The Epic 4G touch forums got real nasty after ICS n the brick montage

It was all fields and everyone used to be on first name terms with each other.
Then the devices came, then they got popular then the neighbourhood went to pot.
>Then the devices came, then they got popular then the neighbourhood went to pot.
Why, when I was your age...
Pining for the golden yesteryear is a popular pasttime, but it's usually distorted by people's selective memory. Reminescing is futile anyway. What matters is how XDA manages the additional influx while still retaining some semblance of its core identity, and not let itself lapsed into another generic techie hang-out.
The dev sub-forum restrictions have been the main instrument in that. But it would be nice to see more care in other areas. The site's UI and layout was never good--check out the classic vs 2010 vs 2013 beta layouts--and now has turned for the worse.
We're not just talking about personal preference for aesthetics, but dirt-basic design concepts like text reflows vs fixed-width. The basic web UI now has orange-on-white. Who thinks up this stuff?
It would also be nice to see more creative solutions to navigate the huge traffic volume and decreasing sig2noise ratio. The most-recent-on-top scheme and the encouragement of long threads effectively bury most valuable info, as informative threads tend to have few inputs, and are pushed off by argumentative or more inane material. I suppose XDA is shackled by its forum software here, but one can hope for better.
Then again, maybe not.
I was a regular over at the SGT7 forums for a few months, didn't see too much name calling and stuff like that.

Don't take this the wrong way but when the US market opened up the s/n ratio plummeted.
Kids will be kids, wherever, but the US teen speaks a dialect of English and this is a predominantly English forum.
There are many native French & German / Nordic fora although many non native English speakers from Europe speak and type better English than many English teenagers and have better manners.

>Don't take this the wrong way but when the US market opened up the s/n ratio plummeted.
I live in the US, although I'm not a native, so I empathize both sides of the coin.
That said, attributing the deterioration of online communication to any nationality or ethnic group isn't a grounded argument. English is still the lingua franca of the Internet at this point, and the US user population is still the largest group. Failings from them tend to be magnified by their numbers.
I agree that there is a marked decline in social/communicative exchanges online. It's a little sad to see people don't even bother to correct obvious spelling mistakes, let alone correct grammar. Any attempt to better such is derided as grammar nazis.
But it is what it is, and it reflects the population at large, who also exhibited a marked decline in analytic thinking and social discourse. No amount of handwringing or reminescing will change that. And it is an equal-opportunity malaise in that it affects every online population, not just the US population.
It's kind of sad...
It's a bit like saying the Nexus 7 forums only murders 10 innocent children a week so it's not as bad as other forums who murders at least 100 innocent children and their mothers on a weekly basis.
It's unfortunate but unless the moderators are extremely active (and well-staffed) chances are the trolls will ruin it for everyone sooner or later.
Especially now it's the summer and there is nothing pimply-faced 13-year-olds like to do more than to troll forums in between playing the latest shooter on their MicroSony PlayBox, stuffing themselves with greasy pizza and masturbate.

[Q] I have a bad taste in my mouth, and it smells like Cyanogenmod...

I am pretty disgusted by McMasterbater and his arrogance.
They make good roms but seem to be getting too big for their boots.
Now they have investors, stockholders and executives to impress, they seem to have lost that original personality of taking stock android and modding it. Now they plan to fork Android much like Amazon have... which is a major change of their personality, and I do not like it at all.
Lollipop WITH GOOGLE is THE best mobile phone experience, so IMO, Cyanogen can go jump in the lake.
What do you think?
Cyanogen have got too big for their boots and should return to what they were doing, modding the lastest STOCK android.
I am disgusted and am going to remove Cyanogenmod from my devices
Screw Google, Cyanogenmod have the right to take the AOSP and use it to their own ends
All competition is good, whether it's from Amazon, Chinese mobile companies or Cyanogen
Who cares
who cares. its not like CM is ever going to run properly on note 4 with its huge array of hardware and software.
I had a one plus and cm worked well. I won't be putting on my note 4 tho. And with their recent shananagans I won't be bothering with them in future on my other devices. They've become money oriented and lost the way big time. In the meantime they are loosing key partners too (oneplus)
No one cares what you do. They haven't lost any key partners. One plus and Micromax paid nothing for their services. It will be one plus who suffers, not Cyanogen. Without CM, no one outside of china would have even heard of OnePlus, let alone sell a million handsets.
What does this have to do with the note 4? Maybe should be in Android General. I haven't tried cm on a note series since the first note.
Never liked Cyanogenmod on my Samsungs, so i couldnt care less
I've always thought they were overrated. I've never used a phone with a stable CM rom, from Nexus's to Samsungs, HTC's to LG's. I doubt google are quaking in their boots at the joke that is CM.

How can we make the XDA forums better?

I figured since we turned this forum into a Questions forum with up and down voting for each answer, I'd ask:
How can we make the XDA forums better?
No answer is too outlandish...be creative. We're listening!
Maybe you think we have too many ads, or maybe you think search totally sucks. Perhaps you want more theme options, or you want more ways to learn development. Whatever your idea is, we want to hear it!
Do something to get rid of the elitism that permeates so many forums here at XDA. This drives away new users who would otherwise want to participate in the community. It also drives away old users who used to participate more.

"Elites"? Buzz words are useless; specific details/incidents/threads please.
Anytime everyone agrees, something is usually very wrong.

Losing "elite" keystone members kills sites.

all the s4 forums:
Samsung Galaxy S 4 i9500, i9505, i9505G, i9506
The Galaxy S 4 is Samsung's flagship device for 2013. The S 4 ups the ante of its predecessor thanks to a 5" 1080p Super AMOLED display (PenTile 441 ppi), a pseudo octa-core Samsung Exynos 5410 or quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 (depending on region), 2 gigs of RAM, up to 64 gigs of storage...

Guys, please stay on topic
I would like, to have some sections, where people can learn modding, learn how to do proggraming for type of stuff we do here on xda.
usualy, someone post some amaizing tool, but it would be even more amaizing if there is separate section for developers who want to learn, deep inside of android system, how to mod it, code some useful software for it, etc
in these times, where all manufacturers are locking bootloaders, or completely ditching bootloader, so it can be unclocked, it encourages lack of experimentation android was before, because people have locked phones and xda forums isn't popular as it once was, there are no more amaizing things, and even if you want to try to make amaizing thing, you can't because there are no resources to learn android. manufacturers, make everything more locked, android is becoming iOS for some reason.
so basically, i would like to have section, like on stackoverflow, but to be focused on android modding, and questions people ask, how they can learn it. (as stackexchange android enthusiasts suck, and it's just that, enthusiasts, but not developers, programmers who want to learn and ask qusetions)
that would make this community useful, for developers.
usual questions, like Q&A is okay, but just want separate section, where real professional people look. (just look, at Q&A, full of regular people who have no clue, and not even read guide, all those questions can be solved with existing guides on XDA, and even if can't, then phone is hard bricked, or question is just trash, and that me, and i believe many others, programmers, professionals, drive back from it, we need quality questions where programmers can look for to help fellow programmer.
and, with this, upwote and downwote, it would be a good idea, as, in those special programming threads, programmers would be able to see most useful answer.
with all people bashing here, this became some low quality, chat forum, i wish we can make it more quality focused, but still noob frinendly, so it have sections for noobs (existing Q&A), and expert section
And what @Jaxidian complained, this would be solution, as sometimes experienced people don't have patience for noob question (they just say "why you don't search first before posting"), those people who answer that way, just wish they could answer and help someone more experienced struggling and not answer same questions from noobs that don't research before posting. (if someone is noob, he becomes even bigger noob if he ask for something that has been asked milion times on same platform)
my 50 cents
A 2-7 day waiting period to post for new members would discourage one thread wonders looking for a quick fix here rather than simple doing a Google search(s).
Help dissuade spammers as well.
Those with a sincere interest would suck up the wait...

Or limit the forums new members can post to just Q and A subforums.
My observation is that in the Q&A forum regularly - almost daily - the same problem (e.g. data recovery for bricked device, rooting device, bypass FRP lock) is presented by different users and asked for a solution proposal: in my eyes a nonsense.
My recommendation: The Q&A forum should have sub-forums for this.
Also, I do not understand why 2 Q&A forums exist, namely Q&A and Q&A->H&T. Users do not distinguish between them.
Please bring back the XDA Labs app.

I think that's an interesting idea, but nothing will make a new user more upset than a waiting period. In 2021, people expect instant access and quick gratification. If we were the only phones community, I would agree with you, but if I was a newb and registered then had a waiting period, I'd say "screw it, my problem is important. i'm going to reddit/AndroidCentral/somewhere else"

That's not going to happen unless a team of developers steps forth to fully take over its development.

It's the active variant of the S4 made exclusively for AT&T. Hence little support.

"Elites"? Buzz words are useless; specific details/incidents/threads please.
Anytime everyone agrees, something is usually very wrong.
Censorship kills sites.
Losing "elite" keystone members kills sites.
Censorship kills sites... an occasional flamewar is desirable. Real life is much worse; dumbing down a site kills it every time.

Here you go. I just quoted an elitist response. The OP asked for "Whatever your idea is, we want to hear it!" and when I offered an idea, this response called it "useless".

You generalized. An invalid argument because of your statement's ubiquity.
No example, no details, then attack me for pointing out your flawed reasoning. Perfect.

I simply offered an opinion in response to the OP asking for opinions. I'm sorry my opinion has offended you so much. I stand by it. Elitist behaviors where people attack another just because they think their opinion is inferior is the exact kind of thing I was referring to. And you are demonstrating it admirably.
And by the way, I never once argued anything. You are the one doing the arguing. And you're welcome to continue. I'm done with you.

You offered no tangible problems or solutions just a buzzword for something you alleged to exist here. No evidence to back you your claim or specifically what the "elitists" do to destroy the site.
That offends me. Vagueness is a common troll and political tactic.
