New version has been installed today and after much trial and error a full re-install from scratch of the Gear and Gear manager I have got it all working.
But...... if I open Gear manager, all the non Gear apps disappear! This is in addition to the check box for non approved apps being d/l on the Gear Manager.
So the only way to prevent this is to open the Gear manager, change settings as desired and then close Gear manager.
Then reboot Gear. This brings back all the hidden apps.......
So you can't have Gear Manager and Gear both open!
WTF!
Not a bug, known issue. Samsung purposely doesnt want non-approved apps. on your Gear.
I JUST ANSWERED THIS QUESTION YESTERDAY

I hope people like this go to jail once this bill passes.

That may be so.
But why did this not happen with previous releases of the Gear Manager? Until yesterday my Gear was running like a dream.
And why am I seemimgly allowed to install 3rd party apps on Gear manager and on the Gear if then I am not allowed to have both operating at the same time? This is illogical.

I hate to break it to you, although the only way you will be able to access your third party apps is by using a third party launcher.
The list of apps which appear in the stock touchwiz launcher are retrieved from a file sent by gear manager. Any apps which have not been installed using gear manager will simply disappear.
I guess its Samsung ways to combat rooting & custom roms.

Well my side loaded apps didn't disappear on previous releases! And I could have Gear Manager open at the same time too.
Not to be able to is daft.
The sideloaded apps are infact only hidden and still loaded on the Gear of course. I know they don't appear in Manager. I think they did once on my first Gear release. And Samsung does permit apps not created by itself to be installed on the Gear, there is a check box for that purpose.

Shortcuts made from Gear Manager on 3rd party apps wont dissapear, altough they are gone from the app-list.

Your absolutely correct, previous releases did not have this "issue" that we like to refer to it as.. Your also correct about the apps simply not being listed in the drawer, they most definitely still exist on the OS.
Its no mistake that this is happening.
The third party option in gear manager is for apps being installed on the gear via the mobile device by other means rather then the Samsung store... this does not affect apps installed directly on the gear OS.
Keep in mind Samsung never imagined the gear to be used as a standalone device.. I regret to say the only way to get around this at this stage is to use a custom launcher.

Correct they use different configuration files.

Sadly theres no launcher which behave's and appears like the stock Samsung launcher without some tinkering.
I personally use Nova launcher combined with Desktop VisualizeR to get a "stock like" appearance..
Alternatively tho, if you dont mind going without the large full page icons you can simply just use Novalauncher by its self.
Desktop visualizer allows you to add widgets to your homescreen, which behave like app shortcuts. You can also set how large you want these widgets to be..
Here is a quick preview of my current setup using the applications above (Screenshots are a little old, disregard the dates shown):
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",

}
As you can see it appears very much like the stock launcher, with a few enhancements ofcoarse.. keep it mind you will have to configure a few things in order to get it to look this way.
You can also configure a dock like a full size android device, I set mine to auto hide and appear if I double tap the screen:
I also use a custom widget for my clock face, although you can easily use the stock watch faces if you wish... if you wish to use the stock watch faces I recommend using Apex launcher rather than Novalauncher. The reason for this is Novalauncher will leave a margin around the widgets which causes a gap. Apex launcher has a setting which will allow you to disable this margin and have a full screen appearance similar to the stock Touchwiz launcher.
This post has become a little longer that I hoped it would be, Sorry about that ! Hopefully this does help tho, if you have any other questions please feel free to ask.
Battery Percentage
How are you displaying your phone's battery percentage on the Gear?

I use a application called tasker on my phone to trigger a event everytime my battery changes, that sends the current battery percentage to my gear. Tasker on my gear then stores that battery percentage into a variable and then zooper widget uses that same variable to display the percentage on my gear homescreen.

So dumb question - do I just side load these to the Gear? I will try Novalauncher as I have a custom face via watchstyler.

Wondershare, you will have to add your custom faces as widgets on your new launcher.. It will make sense when you push your launcher over.
I use Nova and an app called giganticon which let's you install huge app icons on the screen. I will give desktop visualizer a try tho

This is the very thing I was after in my thread in the apps section concerning showing the battery level of the phone onto the gear. Sadly, I'm too stupid with Tasker to figure out how to even accomplish this. Is it possible you could post a tutorial on how to accomplish this?
Thanks :fingers-crossed:

Yeah, could you do a guide, as I don't know how to send variables from Tasker on my phone to the gear and it would be very handy to have on the Gear.

I'm writing this because I see a lot of people using Home++ or GDE and I admit I have them installed too, even purchased GDE but I find myself always going back to Dxtop. But it seems hardly anyone uses it I think I know why.
Most of the options and cool things the app does are not obvious. I will attempt to explain it's unique features and why I think it's the best.
Ok the first thing you notice when you start it, is the two tab interface, one tab is your "regular" apps tab, the other is a tab of currently open and recently used apps. I find the most useful thing about the second tab is when you try out a newly installed app for the first time, you like it and you want to put the icon on the desktop somewhere. Instead of searching through all your apps to find it, it will be at the top of the recently used apps tap.
A complaint dxtop gets alot is the dual tab system. People just don't like seeing two tabs for some reason. Well you can hide the tabs by sliding them to the left or right, a bonus is this reveals dxtop's app dock. In the place where your tabs used to be, you now have space to put your favorite 5 apps or if you have any 1x1 widgets, they can go into the dock to. You can customize the dock's color and transparency. With the tabs gone you can access them by long pressing the menu key for apps tab and back key for open and recent tab.
The "regular" tab is more than meets the eye as well, when you open the apps tab and press menu, you get some extra sorting option for the tab. You can sort alphabetically, by size, by last installed or by category that you set yourself.
When you long press and icon in the tab and drop it without moving it, a context menu will pop up asking you if you want to change the category with other options to uninstall, locate on market and view app info. This context menu can also be used with icons on the desktop giving you the option to rename the shortcut, change the icon as well as the uninstall and info options.
Sadly, dxtop only has 4 screens. They are laid out in a unique diamond shape. It is laid out like this so that all screens are only one swipe away no matter which screen you are one. A swipe left always takes you to the left screen, a swipe up always takes you to the top screen etc.
Dxtop supports themes and can use themes designed other for dxtop, ahome or open home, giving you lots of options.
My favorite features are the category sorting in the app drawer and the app dock which is persistent on all screens.
I hope this will at least encourage people to try dxtop.
Oh and I don't work for them, I'm just a fan.
Been using it since day 1. Love this thing. The unique diamond 4 screens is what i love the most. It's like a default feature I need in every phone from now on. One swipe to any screen is the feature that puts this home screen on another level.
why I think dxtop now sucks arse...
I used to use dxtop exclusively and recommend ed it to everyone. But since access one have bought out master Baron it has added useless features slowing it down. The lock screen etc. I do not want my android phones to look like an iPhone .
I too have used it since day 1 but the last straw for me was when access one first didn't update the theme template to match the new features and then they pulled the template totally! Supposedly so that no third party themes could compete with their paid themes. As a maker of several free themes for dxtop I think this is so wrong. I now boycott dxtop and recommend gde to all. Gde is better than dxtop in many areas and will eventually have as mant features.
Gde is faster with less lag too.
Corporate greed. Fight the power and all that.
i used it religously untill last week when i discovered that games like i dracula runn full speed on my g1 if i disable it. maybe i shuold just turn off persistant mode, but for the time being im not using it, and enjoying games like i-dracula and raging thunder....
I hate all the home screen replacements. They are damn slow compared to the default. Everyone i've used sucks ass. I haven't tried GDE and i hear people talking about lag from that one too. A home replacement should have NO LAG whatsoever and if it does it's just another app, not a homescreen replacement.

I saw someone make a similar comment in the market and I was rude to them, so let me be nice to you.
I think you don't know to CLEAR THE STANDARD ANDROID HOME DESKTOP OF ALL IT'S APPLICATIONS AND WIDGETS WHEN REPLACING IT WITH A NEW HOME REPLACEMENT.
If you don't your phone will be running the standard desktop AND! the one you're trying out so of course it runs slow.
However when I did try the demo for Dxtop it force closed like a mug and ran slow and I gave it every inch it could possibly need to work, just didn't want to.
I liked the fact it could force your screen in landscape, that's a feature I definitely miss from my Tmo Wing.
But as soon as you open an app it goes back to portrait which makes me wish there was a root feature that could enable forced portrait when applications have the code to work in portrait.

Never considered doing that. I'll give them another try following that advice. Thanks for being nice about it. So which one do you reccommend?
home++ doesn't lag for me and it has some really great new features (incl. a flip clock widget that actually flips!)
but i agree, a "real" home replacement would be better than any app that emulates a second home

Welcome. I like Sweeter Home, but it's not up to date, or anything and I don't use it anymore, especially since the next update is like 5 months over due.
Currently running Home ++
I was on a 1.5 and heard how some apps will only be in the market for 1.6 and I caught Home++ on the first day it was released tried it liked it. And it was my reason to go to a 1.6 build.
I'd suggest Home++ even though I think I read you might not of liked it, I personally don't like GDE though.
Lol I've tried all the Hr's
My favorite dxTop feature is the LiveFolders that use the custom categories you create. No more tediously adding new apps to folders on the desktop.
curious, you say if u remove the tabs you will have extra space to put up to 5 apps in the dock. does this mean it can run a 4x4 widget plus that extra space for apps, effectively making it 4x4 + 4x1 ? so i can run a full screen widget plus an extra line of apps

Answer is yes. I have a 4x4 picture frame widget as my top screen with the 5 apps dock underneath it. works great. I'm gonna try home ++ next. Following iceberg's advice the homescreens are running very smoothly. Glad he said something. Can't find much info on home++? What makes it so inviting?

Lol there honestly isn't anything that special about it, I can see the way you like Dxtop and I think you'll think Home++ is the same as GDE which is understandable.
It's just a looping home screen with a Mac doc type thing at the bottom.
Obviously that's my home screen, have the notification bar hid which doesn't add any additional space to the screen
And the dock at the bottom can be configured but not so much personalaized, also if I were to move it over you'd see some status bar info like time battery connection etc.

I dont think this is technically correct. When i put a widget or shortcut of dxtop, it also puts it on the home app and vice versa. I cant clear either one completely so there is always some doubling of shortcuts and widgets. Only the top and bottom screens of dxtop can be cleared as they dont line up or "sync" with the home app screens.

Heloo everyone. I am just wondering if there is a way to hide icons. There is something like that on the iphone called poof where the item is not deleted, just hidden. Thanks in advance.
Where do you want to hide the icons? Are you referring to the application drawer where all of the installed apps are listed? If so, LauncherPro (a replacement for Touchwiz) allows you do hide certain apps in preferences->general settings->hidden apps.
yes

Yes I got it thanks. Is there one like that for touchwiz though?
It's really quite a useful feature, since the number of utility apps you need to get the phone in some sort of workable order is astounding. Titanium Backup, One click this, one click that, Rom Manager, task managers, and on and on and on.
Ok so I know I'm a little Gear Giddy at the moment but something is bothering me. I was wondering if anyone else has seen tablet talk in Gear Manager as an available app shortcut. It was there before and now it's gone.. Now the same shortcut is available as a widget in Nova Launcher. Is there a way to add applications to GM so they are selectable as an app?
Been messing around with null ROM for a day now and I've decided I like TouchWiz better
But soon after I turn the Gear on all my custom apps disappear from the TouchWiz apps folder and so I have to launch Apex to access any of them
Is there any way to keep them there or add them to the home screen? All the apps installed by null ROM stay there; Root browser, SuperSU, etc
What if I install the apps I want on the home screen via custom recovery?
Edit: Actually found out they disappear from the TouchWiz apps drawer when you get a Bluetooth connection

I just like the movement and gestures on it as well as the more sleek look, while a normal launcher does work fine it looks fiddly to me. Plus I like having the watch face up front and center, I use WatchStyler. If I were to use a watch face on a launcher I'd have to get rid of the dock which makes getting more apps a bit fiddly
Edit: Did find the thread you were talking about http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606999
Unfortunately it's only for rooted phones, and that's just not possible for me on my Fire Phone right now
https://plus.google.com/106975101901250307319/posts/1v9cVdXYiQ6
That's what my watch currently looks like. I use a nova launcher prime gesture to hide the dock. I'm using an old version of gmd gesture control to hide the status bar and control gestures in app.
I don't use watch style anymore because I didn't like the battery drain. The watch face is stock just long press on the launcher and add widget. When I've time I'll create a better one with zooper. Been busy working on voice control with the gear, I use it to remote control ok Google on my phone.
Can you use android apps on the fire phone? Tasker is massively important to my setup!
That looks pretty nice, if I start having battery problems I might switch over
Yeah the Fire just has Amazon's own Android OS, so it can use any apps, and thanks to a recent update you can actually use the Google Play Store
The only thing I've been having trouble with is Bluetooth tethering, it doesn't have it by default so I've been trying to use PdaNet, but it's not really a big deal
Actually just been messing around with Apex and found how to hide the drawer, so it's quite nice, but it seems WatchStyler is still incompatible with it :'(
Otherwise might switch to it

Have you read any of the tasgear threads? There's one in the general section and one in the themes and apps section. It takes the watch to a whole new level! I can't stress how useful tasker is with the gear and being able to run it on both phone and watch makes the gear unique.
Well I'm not very well versed in these things, but I've come this far, got the threads saved so I'll take a look
Hi all,
What is the best launcher to install ?
The two things I want are to be able to hide apps, and to have to swipe up to access app drawer as opposed to having an icon for it.
I have tried a couple but the p20 original launcher always ends up taking over. Or with the Lawn launcher for some reason I could add the time/weather widget.
Thanks
Try Ruthless pixel launcher from XDA labs. (If it crashes go to settings and enable storage permission; Bug with pixel launchers on huawei phones)

Also how do you go about downloading different icon packs that will work with the launcher ?
Thanks for your help
Nova, Evie...there are many out there but these are my favorites. Huawei widgets don't seem to work on any custom launcher.
Evie Launcher has been my favorite for a really long time and matches both of your requirements. Plus, the ability to change Icon pack not only by pack but also one by one is a big plus. Smooth, clean and minimalistic and has a couple of cool features.

I have tried a couple but the p20 original launcher always ends up taking over. Or with the Lawn launcher for some reason I could add the time/weather widget.
Thanks

For me the best launcher which i always go back to is LawnChair and it's Google feed add-on.
It's a lot like the Pixel launcher but has a lot more settings.
Icon size, theming, weather provider, gestures, app hiding etc.
It's rapid too and fluid, and it's free
Make sure the launcher is set as the default one, if the 2nd launcher in use crashes then the only thing the system can do is revert back, if you're using lawnchair, use the latest version.
I have it installed and mine never reverts back.
Another way would be if you were rooted you could freeze the original launcher in titanium.
CPL wins hands down.

Late to the party
Most customizable. No contest
Total launcher.

Steep learning curve though
Long time on my previous phones I used Nova and Apex launcher. For 2 years now I am using Microsoft Launcher which supports icon notifications for free and I must say I'm still returning to it. I tried Evie launcher on my P20 Pro but for some reason it consumed the battery a lot. Microsoft launcher does not consume battery at all (always like 1 mAh <), its fast and stable, modern looking but different compared to "stock android looking" launchers.

I use Nova Launcher, as it gives me everything I need. If you have problems with reverting to the stock launcher you can try to lock the new launcher in resent
See this screen recording to know how
keeps on recovery from crashing all the time, ive changed the permissions as stated above as well
I use Nova, bought the prime when it was on sale awhile back for $0.50
Nova forever,
