it is so much better than the google phone search...
say you want to look up someones phone number or email.....before you would have to go into contacts and search
now you just pull down the notification bar, click s-finder, type in their name and everything comes up
IMHO, S finder not so useful, then Google now

what I needed was an universal phone search....contacts, calendar, birthday, notes, tasks, phone numbers, etc....
google now does not do that well.....
this one does it just like iphones
this was one of my main gripes about Android (I switched from an iphone about a year ago)...no readily accessible system-wide search. I still think S Finder is kinda slow but it's definitely better than nothing :good::good::good:
hmm, I'll have to check it out.
S finder not searching Gmail messages, it's so weird
Use Gmail with the stock email, and it just might..

S Finder no longer searches Evernote
I loved S Finder for its ability to search all the phone's local data AND Evernote notes (amazing). For some reason, S Finder is no longer searching Evernote notes (and some other apps as well) despite the fact that those apps are checked in the S Finder settings. I thought this might have had to do with KitKat, but S Finder continued to work with EN long after the upgrade. :crying:
Yes, S finder saves me a lot of time too when searching for settings I want to find fast. I think it's one of the most powerful feature of the new tw.
Is quite useful when i looking for specific files or apps. I use google now for weather and map and use s finder for files.

I have a rooted/rommed wifi-only S1 and my GF has a Blackberry 9780. She is currently overseas for X amount of time and the only way we can talk is by calling each other which is extremely expensive, or using skype which means she has to borrow a friend's laptop or android device. She has service on her phone over there, unsure of what type of plan.
I came up with the idea of using my old BB 8330 and figuring out how to use BBM or something similar on wifi-only, but it turns out that 'ol phone doesn't have wifi on it. It's too bad I sold my last BB some time ago which was an 8530 and had wifi. Oh well.
Anyways, I'm now wondering if there's an app I can use on my S1 that she can also use on her 9780 that would allow us to text and or talk. Something like BBM that doesn't require me to have service or a data plan. I imagine there's at least one app out there that would do this and also be available to BB users.
Thanks.

I read somewhere that it uses your phone number but can't seem to confirm that.
I'm pretty sure we can use KIK but it's text only. I may be getting greedy with wanting text and talk, but having both would be awesome.
Does her phone have a browser? If so, you could use any site like ebuddy to talk. Or even get on something like palringo (dunno if there's a bb version?) but there must be something alike.

She has service and we *think* her data is unlimited. She also has a wireless router at her flat so wifi helps if the data is limited/costly.
We're trying to use apps over our current methods or using something browser based mainly for convenience. Something like whatsapp or KIK would work perfectly from what I understand, but they're text-only. Not a huge problem, but if I can find text+voice that would be great. Skype is normally the answer to that question but her phone, or more specifically her service provider, isn't compatible with skype from what I'm seeing.

ETA: Looks like Blackberry devices can not use the VoIP feature yet but they say it will be available eventually.
Turns out you need a number for viber and my device is wifi-only. After some research I found that you can use any phone number that can receive SMS because it's for them to send you a registration PIN. I tried both my GV and Heywire numbers and haven't received that text on either one. :\

Supposedly, should go to settings - controls - language and input - text-to-speech (TTS) options - Samsung TTS engine and press configure cog. Then install voice data and download high quality voice female, but it doesn't do anything (in my case just a popup window that says it will download and nothing else happens). Can you please check this on your device also? It might be a software bug

Yup, same here. I want the Google voice, not the HD samsung voice.
I have this problem on my Huawei P6, and from doing reseach I believe it's the TTS. If you look at under language and input, there is no Google-Text-To-Speach engine, but instead just the Samsung one.
I still couldn't find a way to download (or where to download the app for that matter) the Google TTS engine.
I hope some can figure this out, because that Samsung voice is really annoying. The funny thing is, Google Now have the correct voice/sound.

I took a peek on the link provided as far as a work around for this issue/annoyance, and seems like a lot of work.
Anyway, I've found an easier solution. You have to be rooted and have Titanium backup. Not sure if it will for everyone, but it sure works on my phone.
All I did was freeze the Samsung TTS engine, and like a miracle my Google maps now sounds wonderful (it use the Google voice/speech) now.
Let me know if this works for you guys.
I'm happy now.

Google's map navigation function is pretty better than apple's. It shouldn't be lead you to lost at a different location.
Looks like the latest Google Search update is testing always listening (lock screen, apps) for OK Google Hotword detection. Only for "certain accounts" at the moment though.
with Search 3.5 installed, certain Google accounts are now able to use “OK Google” Hotword detection in any screen, including the lock screen and third-party apps. Unfortunately, this feature is only available on a few accounts at the moment, but hopefully the rollout continues quickly.

I guess your account isn't one of the few.
Do you guys think it is just random accounts, or would these account holders know ahead of time that they have these special permissions? I'm assuming it's for accounts which signed up for some beta testing.
You are right. It might be for early beta testers.

Started working for me as soon as I installed the apk. Haven't done anything special as such to get it. You can get the hotword detection working from settings. Basically, it works exactly like a moto x except it doesn't work when the phone is both not being charged and also the screen is off. Waiting for custom hotwords now, "OK Google" seems kinda lame.
I read that it's being released in waves to different users and you also have to be on the latest Google play services 5.* But it is being rolled out in a back end search update in waves, few reports of users already having it.
