hi guys! I'm thinking of buying a moto x, but during the day, often several times I turn off the data connection to save some battery... so I was wondering ... would I be able to use touchless control without data? obviously does not mean the google searchs or the weather ... but for example, "what's app?" or "call"..
Yeah, some of the actions you can do without having a internet connection, like call, what's up?, check voicemail... but I don't know exactly which ones doesn't need a connection

I see... I noticed that some commands are followed by a toast notification "opening google search" maybe are those that require a data connection?! instead "what's app" or "call" start immediately, without opening google search

I have unlimited data, but have it set up to disconnect after 5 minutes w/o use, for battery life. I HATE it when it pops up saying connecting, every 30 minutes to update Email, weather and such. It always pops up on top of all other programs. I have searched all over and have not found the solution. Any help is appreciated. If I knew what the file was called I would move it that way it wouldn't work, as long as that doesn't cause another problem. Thanks, Kevin
Hey brother. I'll answer before someone flames you. Look here:
I went to google.com
typed in the search box " Disable connection bubble" without the quotes and got this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334718
Tip** anytime you want to look for something for your phone on google attach Kaiser at the end of it. It'll give you links that take you to this site.
Example: Free Games Kaiser
uuuummmmmm..... yea.......... Sounds and notifications. Was that hard or WHAT?
As always thanks for the support. I typed pop up and came up with nothing. I am not the type that asks before looking for the answers myself. I will look at that thread, thank you. XDA is a great forum, it just sucks that some people like to be sarcastic and rude sometimes. I guess it was a typical Monday for everyone else too. Kevin
I've used this option too. Works well.
I get a related pop up which appears to have no 'sound & notification' category. Using Tomtom or Co-pilot, if it uses GPRS to get the latest traffic info, and due to reception conditions, loses its connectivity, I get a pop-up which says there is no dial-up connection and provides 'settings' and 'dismiss' buttons. I'm guessing the handset would attempt dialing a number due to the lack of GPRS connectivity. I haven't been able to find a way of telling the handset to ignore this condition so it doesn't pop-up in the middle of Tomtom and Co-Pilot. Any ideas how to resolve this?
Thanks
Mike
I have been searching for a looooong time for this but no one seemed to have this issue. mtcs, you're the only person who has brought up this issue, so let's persue it. The "Unable to connect" bubble is most annoying when you're navigating and the navigator window pauses unless you press the button dismiss. Very difficult and dangerous when you're driving!!!
Does anyone have a fix?
As the last two stated, the pop up bubble is very annoying when using Navigation software. Sounds and Notifications does work for the pop up bubble that appears while trying to connect to data, but doesnt appear to help the other. Thanks for the help. Kevin

I came looking for this very thing. Hoping someone knows the solution!
Hello,
I'm looking to understand why my phone near to radio speaker continuously makes noises.
Any other phones doesn't make this noises... only during a phone call.
TYTNII continuously makes str--str--str--str--...
I think this can be dangerous for radiations and for battery life!!
What can be?
You must have a data connection active (GPRS/EDGE/3G).

No, I don't. I check it anytime from Comm Manager and data link is disabled.
I can't believe noone has replies to my question.
I think there are some parameters in the registry for wm6 to check how much frequently check network availability or something like that. I could try to change this params...
Alright, yes it is a active data connection. Trust me data is on even when it says its not. Use nodata to ensure that EDGE/3G is actually off. Lots of phones do this, RAZR's, Blackberry's, Iphone's, etc. They all make this noise when sending or recieving any kind of data weither it be from EDGE/3G or just a simple text its all data.

your welcome.
not to many times where you get freebies.
download this, install it. and disable. and your done
I tried but also with data connection disabled I can hear this strange noise in the stereo speakers.
The only one thing to do in this case is to soft reset pda.
I read many people with this problem on google but no one found a solution!!!
Any idea?

You mean you want to turn off the radio?
Simple method is to go to Settings -> Wireless controls -> Airplane mode. NOTE: This turns off all radios, including WiFi.
If you want a icon to do this, go to the Market and download AnyCut and make a shortcut to Airplane mode.
no not turn off the radio , just close all open connection. cuz i can't see if there's some connection open !!!!!!
A little more description on your dilema would be apreciated.
Who charged you 55 euros?
Are you talking about data transmissions?
If your phone is on and you have service with some provider AND haven't installed any apps that require streaming data, you should not have any "open connections" as you say.

No need for a task manager as the device closes programs on its own.
To disable all data connections use anycut to phone info (like said above) and then menu -> more and you can disable data connection for just that time or disable it on boot to disable forever.
If you were charged 55 euros for using data then you need to get a different phone as this phone is meant for an always on connection so it is connected 24/7
Well I have the same issue. There are no affordable dataplan in the country I live in so letting any application use as much network as it feels like is not an option.
Sadly the phone does not have a way to control who's allowed to use the radio/network or anything for that matter past the installation time. So if pong3d has been installed with full network access you're screwed it can wake up at any time and start streaming whatever it wants from and to your phone. It can even clog your bandwidth and make your browsing suck.
I understand the whole fully connected device thing, but I still think this is a major flaw as users end-up with limited control over what application is doing what. There should be a way to disable data connection, like disabling wifi.
And ultimately there should be a way to manage the permission of the various app. I want to run pong3d but there is no way I'm giving it Contact Access and SMS access and "service that cost you money". Or I want a fair warning "accept/deny" whenever the application tries...
It also happens that people travel (like me) to other countries. And when traveling I use local pre-paid SIM card to avoid roaming fees. I don't need gtalk and MarioSimulator (yeah it does check for update when you launch it) to burn through my credit just because they think they can.
Since we had networking on phone they have been asking you if you wanted to allow the application to connect "Always/Never/Just this time". If Android expect to be used on other devices (so other providers, other countries, other dataplan) that feature will be needed. And the all or nothing attitude towards permissions when installing an app must be changed.
In the mean time, I suggest the original poster do what I do.. Delete all your APN settings and re-add them when needed. In my case just changing one letter in the APN seems to be enough.
my 2p.

I completely understand where you are coming from and I think once the OS comes out of beta it will be a lot better. In the meantime I think it is easier to do the method I did above as it just turns off the data connection and doesn't change any other settings. And you can turn it on or off on the fly.

Don't mean to derail the converstaion but... Google, out of BETA? ROFLOL!!!
That'll be the end of life as we know it!
Anyways... going back to the subject. Your trick is neat and I don't need it (T-mobile customer with unlimited data) but still usefull.
@ mrboyd:
As neoobs stated, you'll have to do that workaround untill Google does add such a feature, but unless you give enough stink (complain) about it, they won't listen.
You could go here to developers and see if anyone is doing something about it and "ask" for such a "feature"
http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers
Also, where are you located? Who's your service provider? What data plans do they have there, or don't?
On the same topic... if someone notices they have no data connection and want to enable it follow the same directions. I did this the other night when tmobiles towers were down. It helped me get connected again.
Does this thing works? I have tried playing with it a little bit and it didn't seem to do much. I'll give it another shot.

what 'thing' ?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i love gmail but im wondering why its not full push e-mail?
all will say yes its push mail but you need leave all day "sync" on to get notifications if you turn off the sync you will not have instant e mail.
leaving all day "sync" will drain a little more the battery, so if you get a mail when you have "sync" off you will nit have any notification UNTIL you turn on, there is program like shutupbattery that will sync every X time but whats the point of push mail?
get instant right? i guess using k9 will work better (not sure) but why not in stock gmail app?
That's what push is. It is a constant low bandwidth connection kept open waiting for Google to send notifications.
The gmail servers cannot just send a message to your phones IP or anything like that, because trying to get that to work with all the various operators and different networking setups in the world would be impossible.
That's how push works on a windows mobile phone, and maybe even a blackberry (but I cannot be sure of that since they run special software on the telco's side)

i didint test it or dont remember if chrome to phone works without sync but if all works in that way why google bother to toggle "sync" yea i know its a low bandwith connection instead always check as poll but you need leave all day sync on to all work well and that will drain a little battery too
Well, you should test, that IS how Chrome to Phone works. It uses the push notification system Google developed. Which uses the push data connection.
The point is, apps written for 2.2 and up should use this system when possible. Instead of having your widgets, twitter apps, chat apps, mail apps all doing their own push or periodic checking, they can all use the one Google connection. Saving battery over 4 apps doing their own checking.
And of course it uses the battery. If you want push on ANY device it will use the battery a lot more. If you want your battery to last longer, don't use any push features.

Dude, you ever tried to get your ISP to turn on your internet connection on your home laptop when you get a mail?
Well, since you (hopefully) understood what kind of gibberish it is, maybe you'll understand why the data connection is always on in the phone? Because it's your internet, and without it you WON'T HAVE ANY DATA AT ALL.
If you choose to disable this connection for battery savings - it's your personal problem that you won't get any service that comes from the internet, including mails. That's how it works, and Google has nothing to do with it.

FYI, they aren't talking about turning off data, rather have gmail push without having to keep sync on. With sync on, the apps regularly poke at the servers to get info about new emails, etc. In contrast, Blackberry push email works is a different way... the server pushes notifications to the app. Chrome to Phone works in this way and I guess it would be quite viable to have other Google apps do the same...
That is[/is] how Google apps do it. My phone tends to notify me of email before Thunderbird picks it up, and they're both push.

Spoken by someone who never tried to confirm what he writes, and the same goes for the OP. The easiest way to understand that you're wrong is - position your phone in place with 3G / WiFi reception, and send yourself a mail on the PC. How much time it takes until you receive it on the phone? My measurements were from 5 sec to 1.5 min, and mostly stayed within half a minute from sending time. So, if your theory was correct, it would mean that the Gmail "pokes at the servers" more than once a minute.. Which is obviously wrong, and if you monitor traffic (in the easiest way possible - just look at your "H" symbol, if you have a custom ROM), you'll see that it doesn't happen.
"Sync" is a general term. Sync can be done in multiple ways. One of them is push sync. It just so happens that Gmail is push sync. And the "Sync" switch is just to enable/disable the sync for Google apps, it doesn't say anything about it being push/pull/whatever.
The subject pretty much says it all. I know that Google Now won't work on my Nexus 7 offline (even with downloading the offline speech recognition). Can you do even the basic stuff (like make a call) via touchless control without Internet access?
EDIT: Arrgh! I meant to post this in questions. Could a mod please move it?
i put mine in airplane mode. okay google now woke up the phone but telling it to open an app said i was in airplane mode.

It's a bit more complicated. On my Moto, when I have internet, it uses Google Search App to search contacts and place calls. When I disable wifi and mobile data, call command still works, but uses some internal app (which, in my opinion, is better than G. Search in contact name recognition, but nvm...)
But after few hours without connection, call command also stops working and you only get "Data issues error".

there are two things recognizing voice stuff. Moto and google. if moto can't figure out what you said, it sends it to google (you can't tell any of thise is going on just looking at the phone). Moto describes all of this on their website somewehere. This is also why when you do certain commands, sometimes different windows show up. If moto recognized it, they launch their stuff to do the command, if it doesn't, then google tries to recognize it and then does what it does with that comamnd.
i think you can activate the touchless control, but won't get result of your search as not internet access.
