[Q] using laptop battery as usb charger - G2 Accessories

I bought a crappy battery pack from dx.com.
the battery works but makes a horrible noise when connecting the phone to the 2A port ... 1A no problem
also it was cheap, chinese, and labled "power bnak" instead of "bank"... total crap
and then I thought... I have a practically new perfectly good huge capacity 12 cell laptop battery that is just sitting on the shelf doing nothing since I don't carry around my laptop most of the time and its connected to ac power with battery disconnected all the time....
what if I could connect a Usb port directly to the battery?
It could be a really overkill emergency charger!
Anyone knows how this can be done?

Directly meant without a huge laptop attached to it

It's possible
Some laptops will keep power flowing to USB ports without being fully on- possibly in sleep mode. Recommend doing that if that's the case, although that's quite heavy to carry around just for charging your phone.

A multi meter can tell you what voltages are coming off the laptop battery and radio shack or a local electrical supply store can get you the parts to convert the voltage to the same as the battery on the "power bnak" then it should just be a matter of making sure you have solid connection and plug in - that big of a power source would be great for camping or power outages.

Charging the battery via USB

Apologies for what might be a seriously n00b question, but does the Diamond recharge the battery while connected to a computer via the USB cable? I want to use the Diamond as a modem/router for my laptop for several hours at a time, but want to make sure that the battery will remain charged.

thanks. that'll be good for using GPS in the car and not having enough juice!
you just need to be aware that depending on the curretnt your car usb port thing can put out it is possible that you can't charge the battery as fast as you're consuming from it. so you'd just be extending battery life but not making it last as long as it's plugged in.
depending on the output of the USB charger that is being used in the car, you may be ok. I noticed that when I had TomTom running with GPS and the backlight turned up, battery status was reporting around 270 ma being drawn from the battery, so as long as that is accurate, and the charger can put out more than that, then you should be ok.
Thanks guys. Its quite likely the consumption will be at a rate higher than charging. I'll have to do some tests

[Q] USB Charging with Pc/Mac

I'm having an issue, and seems not just me,that I can't charge the Tab via usb connected on a laptop or a Mac book (pro).
I'm wondering if its firmware related, I've tried JID and JI6 same issue.
Are you guys having the same?
If someone is not having this problem can please be so nice to tell me the firmware version?
Thanks
no, you cannot charge the tab from a PC usb slot cause of some minimum power requirements which was the same way with ipad

No is not the same than ipad, ipad is possible to recharge with new macs (that what apple says on the web site, the don't say how new though). But is true the iPad has 2A battery versus the Galaxy Tab that has 4000mAh, I was hoping that there was a way to recharge it (slowly but at least to keep it alive when is connect)

Mine is the same guys... I left my AC charger at work over the weekend and have been charging it via USB the whole time... Slow but it gets there if you leave it on over night!
Mine won't charge unless I use the power adapter from Samsung
Mine does charge but slowly from USB.... you should also know that different PC boards and laptops have different power outputs.... in most cases, your tab should charge very slowly on USB power. Mine charges and has BT and Wifi on also... but with heavy use and plugged in to my laptop, it may offset and drain ever so slightly....
Same thing goes for car chargers... if not rated for higher output, it will charge VERY slowly. The original Samsung car charger has a much higher power output. If you can find one that has the same aftermarket USB car adaptor for Ipad charging, that should work too

The contacts on mine are upside down compared to an iPad/iPod/iPhone charger. The blade on which the contacts sit is also higher in the charger slot than an iPad charger. How did you get it to fit without breaking something?
Some PC:s (motherboards) have so weak power output via USB, that they just barely provide a mouse and a keyboard but nothing more.
So anyone should not expect it to be enough for charging Tab.
Tab's own power supply gives 2 Amps out!
My experience about car-usb-adapters: one can charge Tab, other quite similar for some reason not. However, both charge Galxy S fine.
Just something to keep in mind as an option... Usb 3.0 will give more juice to usb cables than current usb ports. Apple has "cheated" and already increased the power to the regular usb ports on their newer laptops on par/better with usb 3.. So... If you get usb 3 cards installed you'll have a port with enough amps to charge the tab. Easier/cheaper to just buy a pdmi cable but if you are about to upgrade to usb 3 its more incentive to do so.
Sent from my SCH-I800 using XDA App
Regarding the ipad charging you can use the below link to to download an ASUS program that will boost the USB power for Windows this works for the ipad and it's showing as charging when connected to my PC this may also work for galaxy tab

Charging using usb on my mbp does take a long time. I timed it and it took at least 6 hours to charge from completely empty to full. Its ok since I plug it in when I'm about to go asleep and by the time I'm up its fully charged.

Careful with that.
Seems it has the not-uncommon tendency to screw up USB drivers to the point that mice and keyboards won't work either, especially on Win7 and Vista X64 machines. It got me, had to do a system restore to fix it. Neat idea though.

USB port should give at least 500mA. But anything more is OK. So Apple can make their USB ports to give anything over 500mA and it is well within the standard. Actually it is good for everyone because if Apple port can give 2A you can use non powered hubs and have power for lots of USB devices.
Actually the Tab charges fine (albeit slowly) from a USB, you just have to be aware of a few things. Firstly as mentioned above some USB ports provide more power than others. Try the different ports on your machine and you'll soon figure out which ones work best. Secondly, while the Tab will display the "Connect your charger" message, it is actually charging. Go into Settings, About Phone, Status and watch the battery level. It'll take a while but will creep up. Finally, it charges faster when the Tab is switched off. ie: if you're actually using it, you won't get a charge, if you have it in standby with screen off, it'll charge slowly (takes most of a day for a full charge) and if the Tab is switched off, it'll go a lot faster (though still not as fast as with the power adapter.)
This is good to know as you can plug it in to your computer and let it set on your desk at work all day and know that it is slowly trickle charging.
I also found that plugging the USB cable into an Apple adapter (from an iPhone) brought up the same "Connect your charger" message, but did charge the Tab, faster than a USb but not as well as my samsung plug.

its too fancey for me, but i dont see why it would have any problems
Bought one - does charging fine for me - don't use it for syncing.
Cons - getting to buttons isn't the easiest when it's docked. It's a bit "fancy" and takes up a fair bit of space on the desk.
Pros - fairly cheap for a dock at the moment. If you feel like a bit of DIY you can remove the black docking section and wiring and put in a smaller stand bit. Next month's job for me.
I've also found this one:

I haven't seen any reviews on it yet, but it looks pretty nice. Comes in both black and white.

It will probably work, but you'll have same results (charging wise) as on normal USB. Without original Samsung cable, the tab will always open the USB connection window.
BTW; the tab will charge on any USB, even on your computer USB, only thing is it will charge slower. Also, it will state that the battery is not charging, but it will charge just fine anyways.
You may not be able to charge enough to keep the batter at 100% if you're doing some heavy processing on the Tab, but it will prolong the battery life.
You could make one of these for one side of the switch and then it'll switch the Tab to fast-charge. If you have it plugged into a 1A or greater power source, it should charge faster than just the standard usb trickle.
Or if you're feeling adventurous, just open that switch up and put the resistors inline on one of the usb ports itself.

I can charge the tab fine via my pc; although as you mentioned it indeed is much slower rate. I hate having to unplug from computer to power adapter when I want to get a full charge quickly; thus the switchbox idea.
I actually went ahead and order one, although different one from what I listed above. It was only $13 shipped so I figured I'd give it a shot. Also picked up a universal dock / stand. I'll post back how well it works and picts when I get it.
What about this one?

[Q] Only charging from Sony chargers?

So, for the past couple of days I've run my battery pretty much dry, when I got to a charger it was at about 6-12% both times. What I've noticed is that my phone doesn't seem to charge from anything except the charger it came with (in the dock... now that I think of it, I should probably have tested that as well, so it isn't just shutting down USB when low on battery) when it is in this low-battery state, nor does it appear in ADB. I tried shutting the phone off and charging like that, but it didn't work. As I am typing this, the phone (currently at a much higher charge) is successfully charging from exactly the same machine and same USB cable that it wouldn't work with last night while at 6%... what gives?
Has anyone else experienced this?
For the record I am running CyanogenMod nightlies (2013-06-10), however I am finding it difficult to believe that software would have an impact on this.

That's strange. I'm currently using my. Old x10 charger and got no trouble. The manufacturer should not have any impact for charging. You can use an iDevice charger if you really need juice. ( of course with the right cable )

I believe it's CM that not allows off charging... If I want to charge my old x10, I had to tun it on. If I connect the charger the green light tun on. So it go into flashmod.

I guess I will have to restore Sony software on it and try at some point. It certainly doesn't seem like there is a good reason for this behaviour to be hardware related, I mean what if I didn't have the dock? (Again, need to test if the original charger will charge via USB in low battery state)

Not as bad as you seem to think
Ok, I think I've nailed this down. My Xperia Z dropped to 18% at some point during the weekend. And all I had to charge it with was an iPhone charger (providing up to 1.1A so that's still not too bad) and a USB cable without a data pair. This didn't start charging. However, luckily my friend had an LG charger with a USB cable containing data pairs. This did start charging! (And his phone charged using my iPhone charger with data-less USB cable) Unfortunately I am an idiot and didn't think to try his cable with the iPhone charger, but at least this is a start! (I'm starting to believe it is the iPhone chargers somehow, which is strange because electricity is electricity, and chargers don't discriminate)
I use my old N900 charger
Sorry to hear you have problems with the charger, I use my N900 charger to charge anything (that charges by micro USB - Including my Xperia Z) around the house with no problems. I can't charge the phone in a MAC or PC USB port if the device is not detected (even if the port has power), but I found out that lots of devices behave like this (I guess its a good way of forcing users to buy a "quick" charger).

Ok. It's effectively a start of and answer. It make me believe that the phone communicate somehow someway with the charger. But that sounds unrealistic.

That's odd, a micro USB cable doesn't change by the manufacturer, except if they change de voltage, i use the Sony cable and a GS3 usb cable at work, no any problem.
Anyway just in case i always prefer to use the manufacturer cable to avoid damage my phone.

We don't think it is the cable (unless it is a cable which only has the power pair and no data pair, that could be a problem), but rather the charger, that is causing problems.

Thats because the USB port does not have the enough power to supply the charger, the charger works with 1500mAh and the USB port 3.0 "only" with 900 max, that means that it will take longer to charge your phone and the dock and phone could over heat. Besides doing this often you will be decreasing the battery life of your Xperia Z1

Thank for you reply. But I have another question.
So, you mean that charging via usb port connect to PC (mini usb port not the magnetic) is not recommend too?
And I confuse about this --> I think, Charging with High current will be hotter, so AC adapter with 1500 mA must be drain my battery life more than USB (via PC)?.

In USB charging mode, your Android device charges slowly, only drawing a maximum of 500ma from the USB host device, even if that device is a USB charger that is capable of supplying much more power, this means that your phone will take longer to charge, but there are cases where this process makes your phne overheat
there are several opinions about USB charging, the 2 most commons are. 1 your phone takes longer to charge and the battery charges better, and 2. the battery takes longer to charge and the battery life decreases.
So, in my opinion, I use the dock and the battery life is great, almost 18 hours with 4.5 hours on screen,
maybe you should make some test and post how was it
PS in all opinions some says that the battery life increases and other says that decreases, in both cases i think you will never notice
regards
