[Q] How-to? Make a CM11 Wi-Fi only ROM - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

I searched, but couldn't find tips for what needs to be removed from a CM11 build to make a phone WiFi-only.
I have an old HTC Vivid I want to use as a datalogging device in my race car. It doesn't have a SIM and will never be on a 3G/4G network again. I do, however, want to be able to turn-on the WiFi hotspot feature so that I can transfer files to/from the phone using my laptop without having to plug it in; or have a WiFi router present.
I tried JellyBelly's script, but I keep getting a phone.apk FC. If I turn on airplane mode, the FC's stop. So, then I turned on WiFi. But, with WiFi turned on in airplane mode, the hotspot feature is grayed out.
So, I'd like to make a custom CM11 build for WiFi only. Is it possible? Any pointers to a how-to thread?
I suspect that maybe the Hotspot feature only works with a cellular network connection. I hope not...

To make it WiFi only, go to Settings and turn off the data and turn on WiFi
To connect your phone and computer, the best way I have found is WiFi File Explorer Pro. It is not free, but the free version limits the transfers.
This will work on any smartphone.

That's actually what I'm using. But, that only works if there's an existing WiFi network to connect to. I also want the phone to host a WiFi hotspot/network.

Wifi Tether for Root Users - 3G ok but no Wifi

First off, I have tried searching for this issue, but haven't had any luck, so I thought I would give this new thread a go.
I am trying to connect via my G1's (ok Rogers Dream to be more specific) wifi internet connection but having no luck. It was working once upon a time, I guess a few variables have changed, mainly my flashing between many different ROMs. Either case I have noticed this issue only recently, on a HERO Rom, and Cyan 4.0.1.
I am able to tether through my Phone Data Plan (3G), no issues. But for Wifi, as soon as I click "Start", my phone turns off my wifi and auto. turns on 3G.
Anyone have any ideas? My last resort is to due a full restore on my phone, I was hoping there is a more simple solution. Also, I have uninstalled/reinstalled the app.
Thanks

Did you restart the phone? This happens every now and then, and a restart will fix it.
Hey, I had to apk's fo rthis the signed_andtether_1_52-pre2.apk did not work. The file labeled Signed_andtetehr_1_52.apk works everytime.

Wait, wait, wait.
You have a Wireless Connection available, why are you tethering your G1? Can't your laptop just pick up the wireless connection? I am confused.

Exactly. lol. Well what the program does is disable your wifi so you can tether using your data connection. Thats the purpose of the program. So from the way you presented your information, you want to tether using your phones wifi connection to access the wifi router from your laptop?
Well, if your laptop (or other device) only has bluetooth, you can use Wireless Tethering for Root Users to share the phone's WIFI connection over the bluetooth connection. If that is what you are trying to accomplish.... not sure.

Haha, busted. Ok, well I don't necessarily need to go through my Wifi of my phone, because yes I have it on my laptop. I just know it used to work, now it doesn't.
Secondly, to the suggestion of rebooting my phone, well I would assume that installing a new ROM would constitute a reboot. Also reinstalling the apk would probably do the same, still though, nothing fixed it.
Sometimes my depending where I am in my house I put my phone halfway between my router and my laptop to strengthen my laptop signal, so, using it as an access point.

Cyanogenmod & other custom Roms usb tethering issues

I'm using my Galaxy S i9000 to tether internet to my desktop. It works fine until the screen turns off. After the screen turns off, the connection becomes laggy, skype etc disconnects constantly, speedtest shows ping of 300-500 to nearest server (10-20 by default). I hope someone could help me out here. What to do, what is the problem, how do I fix this?
This happens on Cyanogenmod, I've tried 7.1 stable, nightly and CM9 ICS builds, also on Onecosmics ICS. Wifi Sleep policy set to always on. Stock ROMs working fine.
Thanks
I never experience this bug on CM7.1. Are you using Juicedefender or that kind of app, maybe they can kill the data connection?
not using anything, all of them were clean and freshly installed ROMs.
Have you tried to set sceen timeout to "off"?
Does it work then?
I didn't experience that bug either tho..
I've tried to set timeout to 30min, and if I not turn it off manually, the connection is working fine for the 30 min, after the screen shuts down, it becomes laggy as hell.
Should I try setting it to off, and if yes, how do I do that?
Also, I'm not sure if it's a tethering issue and not a Wifi one. Can't think of a way to test it without tethering. Any ideas?
Have you tested any tethering apps from market? Like Barnacle Wifi tether.
Have you tested USB tether? There are apps for that on the market also if CM's own usb tethering doesn't work.
Just now I flashed CM7.1 stable just to try out different usb tethering apps. Nothing works, everything is the same. I've tried easytether, quick usb and PdaNet. PdaNet came with some windows drivers for the phone which were different from what I've had before. I've tried to install those, no change. I should probably test wifi tethering just to see if it works.
I tested to wifi tether my 3g connection, everything works fine screen lock on and off. Tried to usb tether my home wifi connection to another computer, had the same problem. Any more suggestions? Thanks in advance

Wifi does not auto-connect when screen is off

I have a wifi issue that is a little different from other I have read here.
Issue: When my phone screen is off, it will NOT auto-connect to saved Wifi hotspots (eg, home, office) within range, until I wake up the phone (turn on the screen).
When it is connected to the Wifi hotspot, it will keep the connections even when the screen is off. (non issue)
I have set "Keep Wifi on during Sleep" to Always, and set "Sleep mode" to off. "Power Saver" is off too. Mobile data is off (I turn it on only when I need it). I checked battery usage, and Wifi is constantly on, just that it does not connected to the saved Wifi.
My question/issue is, is it normal for the One to not auto-connect to saved Wifi hotspots within range when the screen is off?
On my old HTC EVO 3D running ICS, it will automatically connect to the same hotspots without the need to wake up the phone (turn on the screen).
My One is still using the stock Rogers firmware (1.29.631.4)
UPDATE: I found that this appears to happen only when the screen has been off for a longer time (more than a couple hours). If I have waken the screen up an hour before it entered the saved wifi range, then it seems to auto-connect fine. Need more testings.

I do believe it is normal. It's to conserve power your phone would have to have a wakelock to connect to another network draining power. As I understand it the ONE puts the wifi into a power saving mode when it's not connected so it's not constantly draining your power while driving. Once you wake the screen it will then connect as it assumes you want it.

Should that be an option to turn that off, such as the "Wifi Sleep Policy" I saw from some other rom? Or the settings I mentioned above disable that behaviour already?

Don't think so. The wifi sleep would turn the wifi radio off which isn't happening. Oh quick thought check the network and make sure the phone is set to auto connect that would do it for sure!

Nevermind isn't there. Maybe I'm thinking of stock android or maybe I'm thinking of another OS.
Can anyone else confirm if this behaviour is normal or not?
So if I don't wake my screen, I will never get any sync when the screen is off and I just get back into wifi range?

As I have indicated in my first post, this has been set to "Always" already. Are you sure that works for you?
What is the phone not doing that you want it to do? Just turn on auto sync if you want your email and FB updates to be waiting for you. Or is that not working?
Quick test. Put your phone to sleep with gmail autosync push mail on. Turn off data and only enable WiFi. Then send yourself an email from a computer, if you get a notification on your phone while it is sleeping, then it is working. Or you can place a voip call with viber or send yourself a viber text from another phone.

It is not auto connecting to the saved Wifi networks when I go to work, or when I go home, with the screen off. I have to wake the phone (press the power button) and you can see that it will connect to the saved Wifi networks. The FB notifications and Whatsapp notifications are pushed, so they don't require auto-sync to be on.

If my phone is already connected to the Wifi networks, putting it to sleep will NOT disconnect it from the Wifi network. It only happens when I changed from one saved network to another (home to work, or work to home) with the screen off, then it will not auto-connect. I have tested that and I'm not getting the notification in that situations. I have to wake the phone up to trigger the auto-connect.

Is your wifi toggle always on? Or do you turn it off once you leave a certain network? The only way the device will auto connect to a saved network, is if the wifi toggle is already turned on before you go near a saved wifi network.
If you want a saved network to automatically turn on wifi and connect to a saved network, you will need some thing like juice defender. It teaches itself to know when you're near a saved wifi network and it will automatically turn on your wifi toggle on and connect to the saved network. Then once you leave the area or lock your device, it will automatically toggle off wifi and disconnect from the wifi network.

Not sure what you mean by "wifi toggle always on". My Wifi (under setting) on the phone is always on. I never turned it off. Under Power History, I can also see that Wifi is always on (un-interrupted blue bar).
I contacted HTC support, and they asked me to change the WiFi band frequency from "Auto" to "2.4GHz" and reboot the phone. It seems to have fixed the problem so far (after a couple days of testing). Although it would have been nice if they can fixed the problem properly.

Yeah, I just got the One almost a month ago and seriously thinking of returning it because of this issue. I wish I wouldn't have rooted it because since I did for some reason I can't get ADB to recognize my device. I've tried everything my noob brain can think of to fix it and the wifi issue but nothing works. I see that no other developers have a fix either as no apps or threads here give a solid solution.
I might give AT&T the money to warranty it and just get another device but I want that to be my last resort.
Personally, I think it might be an isolated hardware defect that was addressed with later devices which is why it is not as wide spread and therefore doesn't generate a need to find a workable solution.

BTW I've flashed several of the popular roms on XDA to see if that fixed it including Viper and CM but to no avail...

No, I believe you have to be S-Off to do that, or else you need to flash the firmware. Have you trying reinstalling drivers or try on another computer to get ADB to recognise your phone?

[Q] Can't find mobiledata after using WiFi

So I bought a Xperia z1, used if it matters, and it is having this issue. When I'm done using WiFi and turn it off, the phone can't use the internet, even though the connection seems to be running (full connection bars, H+ symbol) but no data is able to move whatsoever. This doesn't occur every time though, it may as well work just fine. Yesterday I didn't use WiFi and the mobile connection worked the whole day. It also occurs sometimes when I boot the phone. Turning on/off the mobiledata or the airplanemode might work and get the connection running. Sometimes. This is frustrating as hell. I'm running android 4.4.2

This part I don't understand. It doesn't make any sense to me. How can you use mobile data when you are connected to Wifi? The problem for me is when I use wifi at home and leave (=no wifi available, I turn it off), the phone can't use internet using mobile data (wcdma in my case). Are you saying that you put wifi on even though there's no wifi connection available and then mobiledata works for you?
Anyway, thanks for your reply I really appreciate it!
Haha...sorry...
I mistyped that...
It should wrote - turn wifi off when you are leaving wifi area wait two seconds and then turn mobile data on.

[Q][USB Tethering] Can I use a connection other than my Data Plan ?

I've been trying to figure out if I can share WiFi that I have on my phone with Laptop/PC/Tab.
So far, I've only found out that Data Plan is the most common, or I must say, the defacto standard. I could find little to no reference of sharing a connection other than my data plan. I went through someone's post over another forum and found out that someone is doing just that. I asked how he did it and he posted screenshots to show how his S3 could route his home WiFi to his Laptop via USB Tethering.
I tried doing the same but at the moment I have no spare connection so I couldn't test this out, but, just for curiosity I tried looking into settings and found out that tethering is only possible for data plan So I installed all drivers (earlier they were giving a problem) then connected my Laptop to phone via USB cable and enabled tethering.
I thought I was done but then just to be sure, I disabled my SIM network. I turned on Airplane mode and then... tethering.disabled
Here, look how the option is grayed out
BTW my D410 is running on Stock ROM V10a-IND-XX, if it helps
Update
My bad, I didn't know about the Airplane Mode and assumed that it only disabled the carrier network. Turns out that one has to re-enable WiFi after turning on the airplane mode.
Here, find the screenshots attached. It clearly shows WiFi will be disabled and when after enabling airplane, I turn on WiFi, it works.
Wouldn't it be easier to buy a usb WiFi card from Amazon?

I already have a USB modem. That's not the problem.
Just wanted to know if it is even theoretically possible because, well, it is(possible), on an S3 ? Fact is, that, such a problem is non-existent. Usually, when you have a wireless adapter(Laptop) then you don't need your phone to handle that. Routers are easily available but phone can function like one (though kinda limited). I went through an ArchLinux forum thread where someone has modified his, wait... some old HTC phone ? to work exactly the same way. Then isn't our model capable of doing just that ?
I'm sure there must be a way.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't airplane mode also disable WiFi?
Airplane mode usually disables 3G/network and WIFI and you have to enable WIFI back on to use it with no 3G.

Oh no, I think you both are right. My bad. This a total facepalm moment. Could be because I never fiddled with settings. I thought Airplane mode was about data network, and not, WiFi
I didn't enter the control panel, just toggled the switched on and off. It's only when you pointed it out that I decided to give that a try. Worked like a charm
Thank you both for pointing out the obvious Airplane Mode 101 :good:
