[Q] Is there a way to get an older Trebuchet? - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I have been running 4.2 on my Touchpad for a long while, but I noticed jcsullins has a 4.4 now, so today I flashed it (cm-11-20140409-SNAPSHOT-jcsullins-tenderloin). I wasn't able to resize the data partition, but a few lines of lvm commands and a visit to the doctor got me in a state where I was able to make it work. So far, I haven't noticed any problems, except the launcher. It's not really a problem, but I do notice the style and layout is WAY different than it was on 4.2 or lower. I like to change my DPI to 120, to increase the amount of real estate I get, and that makes the App Drawer nightmarish on 4.4. Is there a way to somehow sideload an older version of Trebuchet? Or can I change it with some kind of mod (discovered Xposed recently, will that help)?
Thanks, and thank to everyone here that has made my $99 Touchpad into the oldest and most consistently useful gadget I own.

[Q] Fix_Permissions - needed?

I am on CM 4.0.2. All my apps seem to work fine, but there seems to be some slight hesitation when lifting the app drawer - just slightly choppy. I saw a lot about the fix_permissions in console, does this address that? Or is that solely for apps that are not working? I am under the impression it does NOT help this.... but wanted to be certain. Does this mean I perhaps need to adjust my SD partitions?
Should one run that code even if all of the apps appear to be working correctly?
I did not see steps for running the script in all of the posts I saw... any help on this?
This will not help. You fix permissions to possibly help with FC.
Choppiness comes from not enough memory. Check what's running in the background and adjust accordingly. Check your comcache settings, adjust. Check your swap settings, adjust. Be advised though... there's only so much you can do, we are working with very limited hardware here.
FYI... I would really look into what's running in the background first. I run cm 4.02 with default comcache, no swapper. I have 7 widgets and it only stutters occasionaly, I barely notice. I would REALLY look into your backgrouds. Also, don't forget about GPS/Wireless location issue, that may be causing it too.
Good luck
Interesting... i use advanced task killer prior to rooting and when apps were killed i was around 55MB. Now, after root i can only get around 41MB. I never understood what made this lower... i assumed it was stuff cyan added to make his rom open. I do not use many widgets (3 maybe) and generally leave wifi and gps off.
Thoughts?

What is the advantage of HC over others

What is the advantage of using android 3.0 have over 2.2. and 2.3?
Install all three and really see no difference beside the slight UI changes.
evilPERSOn,
I had not yet loaded HC, so my advice is pure speculation. HC has an entirely different interface which acknowledges the fact that a tablet is in essence a tablet and not an oversized phone. So, as such, it works a bit more like a computer with. The speed and streamlined interface of a tablet. As I write this I really wonder why I have not cobbled it up. Well, it is only a matter of time.
Have fun

well for starters this should be in general not development
second HC isnt just a slight UI change, it was MADE for tablets so if you want your tablet to be a giant itouch running android than install 2.2/2.3 but if you want a tablet you should install 3.0
^My bad. I had two tabs open. General and Development. Must have started thread on the wrong location.
1. HC uses GPU interface rendering.
2. HC is meant for a system like a nook with few buttons (good for us)
3.But HC's source is not in the open (bad for us).

For me i thought i would try hc on the sd card and just go back to froyo. I was hooked. I used it for two days on a class 2 card then i flashed, and ive tried to go back to froyo and get flash but i cant. The UI is just perfect, the live app switcher key is wonderful and so great to use, probably my favorite feature. Not to mention i love that the task bar is on the bottom, reminds me of windows and keeps the clock and keys out of my face. Honestly i hate the top notification bar on other versions, ive always hidden it on my droid. Being on the bottom is so nice and out of the way.
Its got its downsides, but give it 2 months.. apps galore, source files..... it will be really good to run.
Edit: not to mention, ive never lost data like on my droid while switching apps. Ive come back to apps ive had open for over 24hrs and its still in the same state
Sent from one of those missing Droids

i'm using the samuelhaff's eMMC HC and i noticed that i can't scroll the app switcher, so i don't have access to all my previously run apps. is this normal?
loving HC, so far. the fact that it's designed for no hard buttons is just awesome.
i don't think the app switcher even scrolls on the xoom yet.
I have only played with HC breifly. But from what i know about it these are the following reasons to use it.
1. Market. Honeycomb is the first android os that will support having the google market. This provides a few things. Any of us who have played with Ipods and ipads will know that there are specific apps built for ipad. Now that Android 3.0 is built for tablet form factor, and officially supports the market. We will now see Tablet applicatons that provide higher resolutions, or new features. These apps will be built around the 3.0 os, and may not work on older operating systems.
2. Built for tablets. Everything we have had up untill this has been a phone operating systme built for a 3" screen ported to something with a 7-10" screen. The os is clearly built for phones there are things in there that just dont work right, or should not be there, but are there, on a fundimental level in the operating system. By adding native support for larger screens, and removing the phone items, it provides for a cleaner higher performance interface.
3. Interface enhancements. The UI has been built to support the larger form factor. This will provide easier navigation as well as soft keys as mentioned above, since alot of tablets are just missing physical buttons.
Unfortunatly the OS has not been released to the public. My guess is there is some contract between motorola (xoom) and google for exclusivity on their tablet. but dont quote me on that.
1) The web browser is much improved - even over Dolphin
2) The email client is much improved - even over K9
3) Contacts sync seamlessly with Google contacts
4) The keyboard is much improved - has a TAB key, has a "handle" to move the cursor around in text, has cut and paste features.
All of this is enough to make me swich to HC.
Downsides:
1) Many of my favorite apps cannot be found or downloaded from the Market - even though they worked fine on 2.1.
2) From uSD card, runs a little slower than 2.1, but not enough to bother me.
is the video accelerated? I could not take cm7..so slow.

No. Same problem effects both I think.
Well, I switched and got my nook to recognize the sd (Class 2) partition. I expanded the image to use the 16 gigs too. I love it. The Live App switching is nice. It actually feels more like true Linux (I am thinking KDE) than any other droid system. I just can't handle the lag when booting apps (probably a combination preview/sd card). I am a teacher and grade on my Nook, so I need speed. But, I am excited about this. Thanks a lot Deeper Blue. This will be stellar.
The true app switching is almost priceless as is the efortless interface.

What is actually happening under the hood with WebTob 3.0 on a Lapdock?

So I am running the first ICS leak (6.7.2231) and I am loving it. I also love that webtop is much more usable out of the box then the original. Can anyone explain to me what is actually ahppening OS wise when I connect my phone to my lapdock?
I've noticed that I can have different wallpapers and some apps don't stay running (VPN and terminal that I've noticed).
I understand that the original webtop ran a custom debian (I think) Linux install when you connected it. Is it actually running a separate instance of Android when I connect it now?
From what I can deduce it automatically modifies the Android configuration files to set the tablet mode for higher resolutions and then restarts all the significant processes. It only seems to work with the stock launcher as well, has issues when used with Apex at least.

[Q] ParanoidAndroid Apps

Too much of a rookie to post in dev thread, but maybe this is a better spot. I tried the ParanoidAndroid rom to see if it solved my biggest issue with CM9 - I want the Kindle app to look like it did in CM7. I had no luck there, but the first page or two of that thread got me thinking - it talked about eliminating the need for a hacked version of apps like the Kindle app to get tablet/phone GUI according to the users preference. That app is the only one I have an issue with, so can anyone point me to where I might find a "modded" version of the Kindle app for Android? Basically I want smaller margins than are currently available on ICS/CM9 on my Nook Color (same problem on my Acer Iconia A100 running ICS)
Thanks for any pointers.
Two things. First, the latest version of the Kindle app gives you margin control in tablet mode. Second, you can use ParanoidAndroid and under PA app settings you can tell PA to set Kindle with the phone GUI and 240dpi. Kindle then thinks it is on a phone and gives you the same margin controls you had on CM7.
leapinlar,
Thanks very much for the reply. I tried the latest version - it gives control, but I still can't shrink the margins enough. Thanks for the PA pointers - I tried it a couple of times - one time it was very sluggish and I couldn't even get to the point of changing PA settings (on a microSD card - it was probably a very slow one and not too suitable for booting from). The second time, I changed a bunch of settings, but with no method to my madness. Now that I know what should work - I'll try again and use a better card.
Thanks and I'll report back.
In PA, experiment with the dpi setting for Kindle. As you reduce the dpi, the fonts get smaller and margins narrower. Then you need to raise the font size in Kindle to compensate to get right margins/font size.
If you cannot get the margins set the way you like them, there are two sites where you can get old versions of Kindle that do not have the tablet GUI built in. Look for a pre 3.x version.

So I played with this some this weekend. My install of PA seemed to reach steady-state and was working pretty well. When I lower the DPI settings, the margins shrink, but ever since I installed PA I can't get to the menu selections from within the Kindle App - so I can't change the fonts. (I loaded button savior and nothing happens when I hit the menu button from there) I loaded several different versions. I also installed a 2.x version from freewarelovers.com and although it said the correct version it behaved just like the latest as far as margins go. (I know I've used 2.x in the past to get rid of the huge margins and it worked) I cleared the cache, but I didn't remove the directory with some of my side-loaded books - can the kindle app "cache" the way it last displayed a book even after I clear the app cache from setting/app/cache?
Thanks for your pointers and I'm encouraged that I've gotten the margins to shrink.

Best ROM for handicapped child?

I'm giving my touchpad to my niece which has cerebral palsy, she is 19 yrs old now but she is still very much like a 14 yr old mentally. Her therapist comes over and lets her play games on her iPad for both learning and improvement of motor skills. What would be the most stable and best ROM to navigate by my mother who is not very adequate with electronics? Also, maybe a suggestion of games to install on it for her would be nice. I want to give it to her for Christmas Tuesday. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
P.S. I will need to edit Moboot so that the ROM is first in the boot menu so my mother doesn't have to scroll to the ROM.
I think navigation-wise the ROMs are all about the same. Pick a CM or Slim ROM; they have fewer options than the AOKP or PA ones (which I'm guessing are probably useless in your use case), and having used most of the versions I know they're stable (even CM10 with camera, which is amazing).
For motor skills I would think the standard games, like Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja and Cut the Rope, are nice. I also like Quell.
EDIT: as for moboot, you can set it so that it automatically boots into Android.
As stated above, what Rom are you using ? If its a regular cm that you are already familiar with stick with it and just upgrade .
Probably the most important thing is setting up a nice easy home page and maybe an app called Automatelt to shutdown the tablet in case the battery drops to low..
Thank you for both of your replies. Currently cm 9 SGA's fat and creamy is installed. I upgraded to his latest via goomanager. I've installed a ton of games for her and they're on the home page to make it simpler for my mother to access them. I didn't think about the app to shutdown the tp when battery gets too low, good idea. Afa the moboot menu I checked my moboot.default and noticed CyanogenMod has a lowercase m causing it to revert to webos as first in the boot menu. Thanks again
