Washing your phone - Be careful of the oleophobic screen! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

We all want to take a Galaxy S5 and start washing it under the sink. Okay, fine.
But please remember to not use any detergents, window cleaner or any other chemicals. Use only water and a soft terry cloth towel. The oleophobic coating on your screen can be damaged by soaps. This means your screen will show fingerprints much sooner than it would by simply wearing out over time.
You can re-apply an oleophobic coating using 3rd party solutions such as that found on Amazon. But most/all 3rd party oleophobic coatings have mixed reviews.
So, no soap for your S5! :good:

I never knew you could reapply that coating. Have you done it?

So Skyping in the shower is ok as long as you're done soaping. Awesome!

[Q] Good way of polishing the scratches

So I just bought my i9020 today and it has some scratches on the screen (second hand, guys). Any idea how to polish them? Anybody tried?
i think.
i think that if you get a ghost armor screen protector, it will hide the scratch if its applied on to. don't take this 100 percent guarantee. I dont have it on me, i will soon
Usually screen protectors will hide scratches very well, and I would recommend them instead of trying to find a way to remove them. Matte protectors work best if you prefer them.
If you try to remove the scratches, you will probably also have to remove the oleiophobic coating from the screen, otherwise parts of the screen will appear to have different consistencies. Once you try this, there's no going back.
A very mild abrassive and lots of polishing can work wonders depending on the depth of the scratches.
I've used Brasso metal polish AND toothpaste (the white kind, not the gel kind) in the past for very small scratches with a microfiber cloth and lots of rubbing. It'll take around an hour or so of rubbing to get them gone.
For the deeper scratches, you can wet sand things.
I've did it with an LCD TV, the protective layer had been scored with a key during a party organized by my brother (he cried a little when it happened on his 2 weeks old TV) and it worked wonderfully. I'm not sure this is good for touchscreen devices though, even less the Nexus S because of the curved screen (can't use a sanding block)
Edit: Agreed on the coating. No matter polishing job you do, you'll likely end up having to remove the whole coating. Something I did to my polycarbonate glasses after I scratched them in a car accident, removed all the anti-reflection coating but ended up not having to rebuy glasses.
Try toothpaste, if it don't work, try clean with milk
I know it is strange, but both of them do clear the scratches off depends on how deep is it.

Any polishing/ wet sanding you do will most likely remove some of the coating. That said, a screen protector can hide most light scratches.

Just rock the scratches. I got 2 scratches on mine, but it's MINT compared to most AVERAGE phone users.

I'm so above average. No scratches.
Feeling cool oh yeah
got a few scratches by the home, menu, back, and search.
so is toothpaste polish and brasso the way to go?

Very easily scratched

So my screen had separation issues so i was attempting the washer fix (which didn't even work for me) and all i did was set me nexus down unscrew and do the fix and screw back in and now there's a scratch just a warning for you guys.

bummer. When putting your tablet/phone face down, it should always be on a flat soft surface. It's pretty obvious unless you've never had a full glass front electronic.
Not flaming, but "very easily scratched" is pretty inflammatory considering you put a glass tablet on it's face and applied pressure. Maybe change the title to "Damn, I should have thought about that before I messed up my screen."
I've put it on a cloth mouse pad when I did the washer fix. Haven't got any scratches yet.

That's the thing it wasn't on a hard surface, it was on a piece of cloth and i assume there was dirt or sand on it or something

The nexus 7 is no more easily scratch than any other tablet/phone with a glass screen (gorilla glass or otherwise).
Glass has a certain hardness and if it comes into contact with something harder, the glass will scratch.
Gorilla glass has a hardness of 7. Sand has a hardness of 9. So sand will scratch even gorilla glass.
It's still glass though, which is prone to being scratched by airborne dirt/sand which is likely what happened.

I agree with the OP, this screen scratches very easily. Atleast mine does

As was stated earlier in this thread, all tablet/phone glass is susceptible to scratching. They do sell these neat little clear plastic things you can apply to your screen so it won't scratch. They are expensive, at about 3 for 5 bucks, but they are worth looking into. Its a brand new technology, so I'm trying to get the word out to the uninitiated.

This. Our screens are "scratch resistant" not scratch proof. I have an acer a500 with gorilla glass and I've had it for over a year now but haven't gotten any scratches on it. Just take the extra minute to make sure there is no debree on any of the surfaces you're using to work on the tablet when it's face down.
Sorry to hear about your scratch, it's a fear all of us have in the pit of our stomachs.
i have found that it is actually pretty scratch resistant. I have dropped my tablet and some things have bumped it, and still come out with no scratch!
Get a case with a screen cover. Smart covers are awesome.

I've just been using a pouch. Leave it in the pouch and take it out when Im using it, if I need to set it down, just put it face up ontop of the pouch.
Every tablet I've owned Ive never used a screen protector - You shouldn't need to.
1.5+ years of using my Transformer TF101 without a case and being thrown around while I travel around the world without a single scratch (on the gl*** anyway, body is very scratched ).
Just to confirm the Nexus has gorilla gl***?
As others have said, you just need something that is harder than the gl*** to scratch it but that is damn bad luck.

Nexus has "Scratch resistant corning glass", but idk if this is different then gorilla glass or not (I've heard some say it's the same, others say it's different)
I too have scratches. Didn't apply pressure face down or anything. I did keep it in my backpack with the glass facing the fabric of the bag. I guess a grain of sand/hard dust got in there.
one of them I can feel the groove with my nails and it's about 3cm long.
So.. I really don't think it's gorilla glass.
You probably scratched it elsewhere without you knowing. I find the screen pretty resistant to scratches. I don't baby my device but I'm not OCD about it, use no screen protector and I have not managed to scratch it so far.

Just got back from the beach with my N7 and even getting sand on the screen and blowing it off, I still have no scratches on the device. Pretty scratch resistant if you ask me.

Fingerprints on screen

I love the large screen, but damn the fingerprints and smudges are so annoying! I've been looking into maybe getting a screen protector that has "Anti-fingerprint" or "Fingerprint Resistant." Has anyone actually tried/tested them? Which work to help with fingerprints?? I searched around but see so many conflicting results. A lot of them seems like people put on the screen protector wrong, and thus thought it was bad.
Wash your hands every once in a while lol. J/k I just wipe mine off with my shirt during the day.
My experience with screen protectors is that it only makes the issue worse, with more oils. What you are looking for is an oleophobic screen protector, I believe.

carry around a micro fibre cloth those work magic try it one wipe n everything is gone
ismooth does a fantastic job in hiding them.
You can try not touching your phone...
Seriously I don't know how you guys can even see fingerprints when the screen is on. My screen has buku fingerprints and oil from my face but I can only see them when the screen is off.

Fried chicken and fast food fingers would be my guess micro fiber cloth, alcohol lens cleaner wipes for glasses, or the bottom of your tshirt all work pretty well tho. Screen protectors, at least the film ones get all smudgy when you try to wipe them clean unless you buy oleophobic films. But the oleophobic coating comes off fairly quick with a few cleanings.

Get the ghost armor screen protector! They don't stick at all... Plus it makes the screen even easier to wipe! It's got a lifetime warranty and you can exchange it with a new one if you ever get a different phone!

That is one of the things I am still surprised at with the BoxWave screen protector I have. After months of use it still does not get dirty. Oh! I sometimes see a little dust or what looks like a oily smuge but I just use the edge of my hand and or a micro cloth or my shirt and swipe it across the screen once (not rubbing or polishing just a quick wipe) and it is back to new.

I second that. Big fan of Ghost Armor. I have the full coverage in a bumper case and I just give it a good once-over every few days with a microfiber cloth.

But wait I thought the alcohol based lense cleaner can take off the oleophobic coating of the screen over time. I know that eventually it does wear off but this reduces that time. I just fill up the small spray bottle with water and use micro fibre which does the job pretty well. I took off the screen protector today, although a bit worried, I figured wth at least I get to experience my phone the way I should, I feel like I was keeping it pristine for the next guy who owns my phone.

One hyphenated word, Rain-x.
Just apply about once a week or so.
It is not a preventer, just a reducer.
But it wipes off prints easier.

How to remove scratches from pebble

Any ideas

Skinomi screen protector. Scratches will not show unless they are really deep.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that... That's why on my second Pebble, I put a screen protector on right away.
I've read people advise using toothpaste and soft cloth to try to buff it out.

Use DISPLEX Display polish! My scratches are away. But it need much time to polishing!
Done with Tapa and One
I've read you can buff out scratches but that it has an anti-glare coating. I'm wondering if this will be effected?

Think of buffing as really low grit sanding. You're just sanding down the area around the scratch to remove it, for instance, with abrasive toothpaste. So yes, you would lose any coating if the scratch went through that layer. You would need to buff the entire surface, otherwise the area where the scratch was would look matte whereas the rest of the watch would be glossy. The only alternative, aside from a screen protector, would be to fill the scratch with something. I've heard that gel toothpaste absent breath enhancing flecks or whatever would work for filling.
I agree with everyone else here. I bought this
http://www.amazon.com/Polywatch-Pla...UTF8&qid=1391982006&sr=8-1&keywords=polywatch
And a skinomi screen protector right after I polished. I didn't have deep scratches but it definitely got the little ones I had on there.

Rubbing Compound
Sold a second pebble I bought this morning. Put some rubbing compound on it with a tissue and then rubbed it off with an old clean shirt sleeve. The face looked fresh out of the plastic. Doing it to my daily watch tonight!
I use a product called Liquid Armour, just have to place a new coat every six months. Use it on all my phones as well...

Does the old coat peel off easily when you want to apply a new coat, or do you just add to what's there?

Toothpaste - must be slightly gritty, can't use gel-type .
1: Examine your Pebble and look for the area with the most scratches. It is best to hold it up to a bright light at an angle.
2: Get the toothpaste of your choice and squeeze a small amount onto the screen.
3: Rub the toothpaste around in a circular motion while applying gentle pressure. Focus on the areas with the most scratches.
4: After rubbing the toothpaste around for about 2-5 minutes, rinse off the Pebble with water. Examine the screen and repeat if necessary.

Toothpaste and scratch removal

Just used toothpaste to remove a scratch off of my touchscreen...it worked! The LG FLEX screen is plastic because of the curved screen....but this works on the glass screens too. Apply a little too the screen and buff it in a circular motion for about 5 min, preferably with a micro fiber cloth (I used the disposable paper cloths that I use too clean my glasses with). Wipe it off and clean the screen with a damp cloth...this works on light scratches...would probably just make deep scratches appear less pronounced...
I have the quick window case but it got scratched in the window area of the case by my pants button on the back pocket....I guess I better invest in a screen protector although I'm not a big fan of them or cases....I just liked the functionality and look off the phone with this case...
I hope this helps others as it helped me...
