Make Settings update stick - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I used lucky patcher on my rooted kfsowi to turn off package managers's signature check, then i installed thr aosp settings apk as an update over the regular settings apk. It works great, however, when I reboot my tablet, the regular settings application returns. Is there a way to keep this from happening?

Push it to /system/app/ and replace with stock settings app.

[Q] Nook Color can't run certain apps that shouldn't require cell network, but do?

I don't know if this is a problem related to the recent patch for ROM Manager, but I upgraded that app and it didn't fix it, so...
Anyway, I have two apps giving me fits right now:
Amazon's new MP3 Cloud player for Android, and "Good (for Enterprise)", which is a corporate email reader.
Both apps complain that my cell network isn't enabled. Both apps should work find over WiFi, and they are communicating with their servers in some capacity, because they are able to tell the difference between a valid login and an invalid one. But once I enter a valid login, they both complain that I need to enable my cell network.
Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what you mean. I'm on WiFi, and I can connect to Amazon's web page fine. But when I login to the app using my amazon account, it complains about not being connected to a cell network. Why would it care if I'm on wifi?
Do you have the phone.apk telephony.apk and mms.apk renamed or removed by chance? The app could just be looking for those.
Ahhhhh, I see...
You mean like this thread?

I haven't done anything like this on purpose. I'm running the stock ROM with eclair and rooted via autonooter. Can I check for them using a file manager or ADB?
Ran into the same problem when I tried running the Yelp app on my Nook Color. Kept crashing on the install. After passing emails and logs back and forth with Yelp it turns out it crashing when it's looking for a phone, even though I'm on wifi.
He said they'd fix it in the next major release.

Play store apps now showing device not compatible

Yesterday I got my Nexus and began installing play store apps. After I got many of my apps installed I noticed that some apps were coming up with "Your device isn't compatible with this version" and I wasn't able to download them. I went back and looked at some apps I had already installed such as Facebook for android and even that shows the same message now even though I was able to install it previously. I am disallowed in both the play store app as well as the web site from installing these apps so it is clearly something stored on play about my device. Is anyone else seeing this? Try the following apps
Facebook for Android
Firefox
My Tracks
Evernote
This list could go on.

I guess I should add that I am rooted and I made the following change to my build.prop file in order to get the tablet view.
- ro.sf.lcd_density=213
+ ro.sf.lcd_density=175
I guess I will try switching the density back and see if that makes a difference.
This is a common issue after you changed the LCD density, and unfortunately, there is no real solution (that I know of).
To get around this, revert back to the native density of 213. Clear cache of Play store. All apps should be compatible as stock. You can try to go back the lower the density again. Without clearing cache of the Play store this time, you may get lucky that the Play store may *think* it is still under the default LCD density.

Changing his density back should do it, with the clearing the cache of the play store

Many of my GSII apps show as incompatible. No root or anything done to N7 yet. I did get FB to work though.
Thank you all for the replies. When I made the dpi changes the Play Store did operate as normal for some time. I have now switched my dpi back and cleared cache and data for Play Store. Still not working properly at this point, but I will keep you posted. Thanks for the heads up!
For future reference I found this post that talks about Tablet UI and the aforementioned Play Store issue.

Yes, I have no problem launching those apps. It sounds like its just a Play Store incompatibility. Some others have reported using a dpi of 160 and not having Play Store issues, but like I said, my issue showed up a couple hours after the fact. And having changed it back to the default, my Play Store issues have not yet gone away.
After changing the settings back, force stopping play store, clearing cache and data, then rebooting, I was able to get the play store behaving properly again. But I HATE the phone UI. So I am tempted to change it back once I get the apps I want. I may give 160 a shot rather than 175.

Glad to hear that it worked.
I have been using DPI of 160 since yesterday. Play store is still behaving normally so far. Fingers crossed.
Let us know how it turned out for you at 160.
Since I've had my device rooted I have had a lot of apps on the plays store which says incompatible with your device, can someone e please help, thank you.
Why not just follow the directions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780970
And skip changing the DPI.
Ain't there another way without patching it, that is long a and I don't want to mess up my nexus 7

Hi,
To change your LCD density but avoid apps incompatibility, set your density back to 213.
Now, create a file in /data/local.prop and type in it :
qemu.sf.lcd_density=160
You can change the density to whatever you want, save and reboot
Please press thanks if I helped you

I installed google play on my kindle days ago, no other gapps. After the status bar disappeared, I reset KFHD to factory defaults, but google play still on KFHD(I don't know why). however, google play didn't work any more, anytime I tried to open it, appears a hint said "you must add an account to the device to continue, yes or no", google play aborted no matter which option I choose.

Google play is still around after a system restore because you placed it in the system/app folder. Anything in there will not be wiped. The system actually uses the files in there to restore to default. The wipe would of removed googleframeworks, that is why your play store isn't working.
I would go in and delete the play store apk and start over from the thread on installing play store.

Skype force closes

I have the kindle fire hd 7 inch non rooted. Skype works perfectly while kindle is on. After maybe ten mins of having the screen off, when I receive a call it rings but when I unlock the device a little box in the middle says "skype force closed", or something like that, and you can either choose "wait" or "ok". Anyone else experiencing this? I was thinking of using the phone version instead of the kindle version to see if it is better.

try this
Try using the program "Skype Boot." You don't need to have the Play Store installed; use go to the 1Mobile website, download the installation APK, install, open, and search for the Skype Boot program--enables opening Skype at boot up. I'm not sure it will help you, and you'll have to reboot to try it. I'd uninstall your version of Skype, and select to download the one fresh from the Amazon App store labeled for Kindle Fire. When you uninstall, select to uninstall from the app settings menu--completely wipe the program. Force close, wipe data, then wipe cash, then uninstall. That's just what I'd do. Then re-install the app, selecting it from the app store.
Sign in to it. I have a microsoft account I sign in with. probably doesn't matter. after that, go and open the Skype boot app from 1Mobile ('cause you didn't have any issues installing that, right? SHOULDN'T). Select to load Skype at bootup. Navigate out of that app, and reboot, see if that helps.
I've things a bit different in my setup; I'm rooted, and I used titanium backup to convert Skype to a system app. It hasn't force closed since yesterday when I rebooted. Also, if I go to my settings menu and look at installed applications and select to view running applications, Skype is not listed as running, but it definitely is (showing Online status in the notifications pull-down).
Just FYI, there's no harm in rooting, it won't break anything--but installing the Play Store is a bit complicated. Most people, myself included are not remotely interested in installing a recovery or flashing a ROM; it's risky, and any ROM you might flash at this point will seriously decrease the KFHD functionality. At this point this thing Flies, especially in comparison to the original KF. Flash a ROM and you likely won't even be able to play video (hehe, you might brick it too, if you're lucky!). Don't hold your breath on getting a ROM that actually improves Amazon stock function. That kinda broke even with the original KF, and with HD I don't think the incentive is really there to move and shake, dev-wise.

Can someone check this for me please, amazon underground

Having trouble trying to install the underground app , not sure if it won't install because it has a app store all ready installed the same problem on my fire tv too

is it only possible to have the amazon underground apps on 5.0.1 ive tried to install it on my fire on 5.0 but it wont install I cant see no underground anywhere on the apps app. is it possible that it only works on 5.0.1?
would apreciate if someone can check for me please
I've tried versions 5.8.0, 5.9.0 and 6.0.0 of the Underground app on FireOS 5.0.1 and no go for any of them. Attempting install from adb resulted in error of "INSTALL_FAILED_CONFLICTING_PROVIDER", which apparently means there's overlap with the android:authorities in the manifest with something that's already installed. aapt dump of the manifest with a grep for "authorities" gives the list:
amazon.mShop.android.AssetContentProvider
com.amazon.appstore-snuffy
com.amazon.avod.intent
com.amazon.avod.settings.AivSettingsProvider
com.amazon.clouddrive.uploadlibrary
com.amazon.identity.auth.device.MapInfoProvider.mShop

com.amazon.venezia.kiwi-com.amazon.mShop.android

Assuming probably SOL, since we can't uninstall the built-in apps, and also assuming just hiding them won't prevent the conflict.
