Probably Need Root??? - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to get the S5's Messaging App installed onto my Note3 (running official 4.4.2 NC2) without being rooted?

Have you tried installing it as a normal apk with unknown sources allowed?

I just tried that, got the .apk from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2690997 it installs fine, but the app FC's all over the place and uninstalls itself after reboot. The thread says to move it to system/app or priv-app, but we can't do that because there is no root yet for NC2

Dank, I did try that. I got the apk from the post right below yours. Had some problems.

I tried the same thing. I was quite disappointed when I got all the FCs.

I was thinking, its definitely going to be tough to get it into /system/app without mounting it RW (root necessary). This is just a thought, would an update.zip containing the apk be able to be flashed in the stock recovery?

Can you do that without being rooted??
*(And more importantly), what happens if that goes wrong?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using xda app-developers app

I think stock recovery has an option to flash an "update.zip". What happens if it goes wrong? I have no idea. I've never had to install a system app without root, I'm just trying to think of something that might work. I mean root browsers and adb are ruled out. Other than flashing, I don't know of many other ways to get an app in there. >.<

How to apply the leaked update?

I got the file, put it on my sd card, booted into recovery with power+ x the file was re named to update.zip but in recovery its called update.zip.zip and when I try and apply it, it fails. Can anyone tell me how to apply the update properly that's done it? I've never done a leaked update so I'm not sure how to.

A step by step would be useful and maybe a way to find the download in case I don't have the correct one? I'm not sure if thats allowed
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
you need to rename it to simply update. Its already in .zip format anyways..
And, not to be rude, but if you don't know what you're doing you shouldn't be doing this.

Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
Actually you don't need to rename it to update.zip. I had to flash with the original blur file name. Renaming it to update.zip would always cause it to fail for some reason(and I checked multiple times it that it was update.zip and not update.zip.zip.)

.894 keeps trying to install - need to stop it

.894 keeps trying to update to my device and fails because of forever root. I know I don't want to update, but I need to find a way to stop this notification from popping up. Does anyone know a way short of unrooting and letting it update?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
If you want to keep root, I wouldn't. But if you really need to, take mount_ext3.sh and remove the lines of code forever root added.
Delete the files from the cache folder.

I think you need to use root explorer to be abler to see them there is two files in the cache folksy you will need to remove, both saying something about .894, I had the same issue with .893, removed those files and it stop annoying me.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
Ok, found an .apk in there that I deleted. The inly other file was what looked to be a log from .893
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I deleted it and it is still trying to update.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
Reboot after you delete it.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
You need to open root explorer and then go to /system/etc/security rename the file otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak and then reboot your phone and that should do it. Hope this helps
If your stock .893 not rooted what does .894 do for you

Didn't work. Still trying to update. I don't think it ever installed it, it keeps trying to download it. Looks like I may have to sacrifice root. Any other ideas?

Titanium backup and freeze updater. Defrost when you need it.

It comes up as download of update failed. It is annoying because it will break into tasks. Say you are shooting a video, it will pop in and stop the recording.

Did you delete both files related to .894 in the /cache folder?
The only things in /cache is downloadfile.apk, lost and found and a folder names recovery that has a logfile in it. I tried deleting downloadfile.apk several times and it keeps coming back.

That apk shouldn't be there. At least I don't have that. Try renaming it to .bak on the end and rebooting.

Xperia T can't perform root actions

My XT used to be fine: unlocked bootloader, rooted, could uninstall what I wanted...
But as some of you know, after flashing Sony's JB ftf, and following root methods, the SuperSU apk is installed, but doesn't work...
My phone claims to be rooted... but no system apps can be uninstalled, I have now realized that this is permanent. I have flashed CM10 and the deletion of system files still fails...
Thanks in advance.
P.S. Just encase you tell me to try again or that I did something wrong, I DEFINITELY did stuff how they are supposed to be done and tried many times.

Yep, checked, the permissions are also correct.
have you tried to factory reset and reroot device could be a glitch in the matrix
I noticed that I removed system apps with doom kernel and that when I flashed stock kernel the apps were still there... I thought I had this problem as well. But I removed them again using titanium and now they are gone.
One thing to note. I also rebooted my phone for the first time last night and when it rebooted I got the grey triangle thing. I left my phone overnight and now it's fine... Not sure if it's related but...

Nope did that, not working.
Doesn't even allow me to remove apps when using Doom Kernel...
Which method are you using to remove them?
Are you using titanium or removing the apks from system\app using root explorer

Uninstalling via ES File Explorer.
I also cannot delete the apks.
Then when flashing a new ROM (even after wiping everything), still no luck.

I'll use Sony's flashtool and go back to ICS, that should fix it.
I might just have to wait for the official update, things might work for me then.
Have you tried flashing supersu and binaries in recovery? You can download it from chainfires thread
Sent from my LT30p using Tapatalk 2
Or just use the pre rooted zip from timin8r in development section (stock, rooted and deodexed).
Also kernel is flashable trough zip so all you need is cwm to start with.

Yep, tried all of that, still didn't work. Very strange. Flashed stock ICS ftf, just gonna wait until the JB update is available on Sony Flashtool, things might work better then, for some reason.
I've heard about some system apps being not just in the system folder, but in another folder too (might have been data?) It's happened before that people delete the one in the system folder but the app pops back after a reboot... probably won't help, but always worth checking?

Going to try my luck with the new kernel with recovery.
EDIT: No, still not working...
Thought about formatting all partitions and sdcards, and then flash ftf , boot, flash kernel with twrp, boot, flash superuser and/or update.zip?

[Q] Xperia Link On custom roms

Having installed a custom ROM (carbon) as much as i love the rom it doesn't come with Xperia Link.
As i have an Xperia tablet Z it would be really useful.
I have tried backing up the APK with Astro but when i tried to install it on my new rom it just refuses to install saying "App not installed" Just to make it clear it's the Xperia Link phone lient i want. Any suggestions?

Still no joy, Just to make sure i did the right thing... i copied the file to System/App using root browser then long click, permissions and on owner tick read, write & exectable rebooted then tried to install? It still said "app did not install"
You should not install,it will show up with the applications or in the settings(i don't remember)if it's working.

No still no joy. Cuiously though the astro backed up apk is called "com.sonymobile.xperialink-1.apk"
But when i looked in System/Apps on the stock rom no such app exists only "SomcXperiaLink.apk" When i try to copy, move or archive that file it fails even after a force stop.
Hope this helps thanks for your help so far.

Stock Messaging App

So, first post here because I can't seem to find the solution (as I normally can)... but, I was using the CM App installer that allows you to install some CM apps on any ROM, and it crashed in process and my messaging app was deleted. I use Sliding Messenger, but it won't send MMS now. How can I get the stock app back?

Go to the development tread and there are system dumps for the different carriers. Download the Mms.apk and the Mms.odex
Push them into the system/app folder
Sent from my XT1058 using xda app-developers app
I already got the system dump, but I don't know how to "push" it through. I assume it's with adb but I've never had to go that route. If someone could easily direct me the process for that, it would be great! (I will still be searching on my own too)

I read up on it last night and that's how I attempted it. I was successful at pushing the app into system/app and then install it, but it would just force close immediately after opening. I'll keep digging to see what else I can do

change the write permission using root explorer or es file explorer. click on it or long press and go to more in es file explorer. then click on properties.. change it to -rw -r -r like the rest of the system apk and odex files. This should fix your problem.
