Galaxy S4 Active 4.4.2 Kitkat ROOT - Galaxy S 4 Active General

Hello everyone. It's me again now this time I bring you root access to the new OTA KITKAT for our S4
Disclaimer : I'm not responsible if your phone suddenly dies, explodes or your cat catches fire. Be warned.
SOME PEOPLE REPORT MOBILE DATA NOT WORKING AFTER THIS PROCESS SO ALL YOU GOTTA DO IS GO INTO YOUR APN SETTINGS MENU AND DO RESET TO DEFAULT SETTINGS AND WRITE YOUR CARRIERS APN SETTINGS AND IT WILL WORK.
This process has a lot of steps but if you follow them correctly you will end up with stock rooted 4.4.2 kitkat with super user and safestrap
Requirements:
If you already took the update and your system version is 4.4.2 keep reading.
1. Patience
2. Pwned Kitkat OTA Update link
3. Pwnedkernel for 4.3 Download
4. System image from stock 4.3 Tar file Download
5. Safestrap for the Galaxy S4 Active Download
6. Stock 4.4 Kitkat Kernel Download
7. Chainfire's SuperSu.zip Download
First after you finish downloading the stock 4.3 image extract it somewhere you remember and you'll see the following files:
BL_I537UCUBML2_2244695_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar
AP_I537UCUBML2_2244695_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar
CSC_I537UCUBML2_2244695_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar
CP_I537UCUBML2_2244695_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar
Put your phone in download mode and fire up odin. Under PDA select and flash
AP_I537UCUBML2_2244695_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar
This will downgrade your system back to 4.3 because yes the new kitkat bootloader allows you to flash 4.3 signed firmware. Note: YOU CANNOT DOWNGRADE BOOTLOADER SO DONT ATTEMPT IT
Wait until odin finishes flashing the firmware and when the phone reboots itself put it again in download mode. Now you must flash pwnedkernel.tar.md5 selecting PDA again in ODIN and wait for phone to boot up. If your phone gets stuck in the ATT logo then perform a factory reset .
Once your phone boots up enable USB debugging mode and root it using saferoot or vroot. GOOGLE it and you'll find it...Then you must install safestrap.apk
adb install safestrapactive.apk
Click to collapse
Now copy pwnedkitkat.zip and update-Supersu.zip to your SD Card and once that's finished open up safestrap in your device and tap install when that's done tap reboot to recovery.
Now you'll be at the safestrap recovery screen so go ahead and select install zip file.
IMPORTANT : DO NOT DELETE DATA/CACHE OR DO A FACTORY RESET BEFORE FLASHING THE KITKAT.ZIP OTHERWISE YOU'LL HAVE TO START ALL OVER AGAIN.
Install pwnedkitkat.zip and once it finishes go ahead and install update-supersu.zip to enable root access.
AND FINALLY VERY IMPORTANT YOU MUST FLASH THE 4.4.2 STOCK KERNEL IMAGE USING ODIN AND SELECTING PDA OTHERWISE YOUR PHONE WONT BOOT
Wait for your phone to reboot, open up superuser and disable knox security.
Enjoy your rooted 4.4.2 S4 Active.
Credits : hashcode for making safestrap possible and the other amazing developers at XDA that discovered these exploits in the past and special thanks to Samsung for "letting" open these loopholes
If you are in official 4.3 ML2 see my next post.

Can't wait. When is the ETA? estimate, 10 minutes?
I just can't wait transforming my S4 to S5!
Edit: 40 minutes passed
Now it is probably close to me. I can feel it!
THANK YOOOOOOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you're currently running 4.3 ML2 official update and you want to upgrade to 4.4.2 but dont want to lose root then keep reading.
In the following steps I'm assuming that you're currently running stock 4.3 Rooted ...see my other guide...and that you didn't modify any system apps otherwise the update will fail and you'll have to restore using the Odin package for 4.3.
1. Download pwnedkitkat.zip from 1st post.
2. If you dont have safetrap installed then you must download it and install it.
3. Copy pwnedkitat.zip and update-superuser.zip to your sdcard
4. Restart your phone in safestrap recovery and install pwnedkitkat.zip and when it's done flashing install superuser.zip.
WARNING : DO NOT PERFORM A FACTORY RESET BEFORE FLASHING THE ZIP. THIS IS A MODIFIED OFFICIAL UPDATE SO ONLY SYSTEM FILES WILL BE UPDATED. YOUR DATA WILL BE UNTOUCHED.
5.Put your phone in download mode and flash the 4.4.2 stock boot.tar.md5 kernel and your phone will boot after a few minutes with root access enabled.
Enjoy.

Deleted. As I managed to do it.

Ok i got out of this state, you need the ML2 cp and csc files and the original kernel for ML2 flash them and youll be good

You guys should try flashing the 4.3 Odin package and starting from there. I know I have a lot of modified system apps, so I'm likely going to re flash 4.3 just to make sure I'm stock. Thanks again sunderwear!! Good luck rooting everyone. I'll post back with an update in a bit!!

what about us 4.2.2 stock rooted users?
I'm sure most S4 Active owners are still on 4.2.2 rooted. What is the best procedure for us?
Should i unroot my phone via SuperSU then accept the stock 4.4.2 OTA update, then follow the method in the OP?
Or can i leave it rooted and flash stock 4.4.2 via Odin and then follow the OP?

I was in a similar position with being rooted on 4.3 ML2 (Sunderwear's method). I unrooted thru SuperSU, unfroze everything under TiBU, unchecked every module under xposed framework, reboot phone then proceeded to uninstall all my root apps. I then did a factory reset, then I flashed back to the stock 4.3 under ODIN and following that I took the 4.4.2 OTA successfully.
In the end it's up to you, but IMHO I consider it wise to begin anew with a fresh clean phone.

Yes if you get stuck after downgrading system you must do a factory reset otherwise you'll get stuck in the ATT LOGO.

sunderwear thank you I downloaded it kitkat zip file. I flashed it with safestrap and then I flashed suprSu then I reboot the phone won't boot ... I flushed with Odin the kernel 4.4.2 every things works greats

[OTA] [KITKAT] For 98.18.94 stock phones

I had my phone download this and then just copied it off. My phones build was 98.18.94. Not sure what the difference between this and 98.30 is. I'm rooted so I haven't installed it but it's here for anyone that wants it. My phone downloaded a different version than I found online. It was version 182.46.10XT907.Verizon.en.US. I don't know what other phone builds it will work with. Either way use at your own discretion.
Here is the update for phones running 98.18.94

My understand is that it should leave the bootloader unlocked. It will replace the recovery, radio and other system partitions. If you removed anything from the /system/apps folder then I think it will fail/abort install. I've removed some so I need/want to RSD back to stock and then update but if I do then I'll lose root which I use.
Yes, and with SELinux and some other enhancements in KitKat I wouldn't even take a future root for granted.

Posting updates on how to use this thru the stock recovery.
This is how it is supposed to be used:
1 - Flash LATEST stock SBF of JB thru RSD. (Android 4.1.2
Blur_Version.98.30.1.XT907.Verizon.en.US)
2 - After RSD flash reboot phone on stock recovery and proceed to install update from SD card, here select the file that is provided at the beginning of the thread.
3 - After this first flash completes, phone is going to reboot in recovery again, to open the menu of this specific recovery, the combo of the buttons is power + vol up.
4 - proceed to install from sd card again and select the same file that you selected on the second step.
5 - Wait for it to finish
6 - Wipe data/factory reset
7 - Select restart system, Phone will restart in KK, enjoy guys.
Keep in mind that you have to follow the explanation at the beggining of the thread or this one, if you dont follow this steps like this, you wont be able to install this update or you wont be able to finish installing the update.
is this the offical KK update?
Yes it is official. Like I posted earlier, its OTA from Verizon.

I doubt it. It's for stock phones. It will need a stock recovery I do believe.
Hmmm..
My razr is stock & rooted, and I have manually removed several bloat apps. If I attempt to this update ota could it cause any harm to my system aside from possible abort/update fail? Will it remove root? Gracias.
It won't install... or its not suppose to.

My understanding is you can retain some root functionality using SuperSU Pro's Survival Mode. I believe you'll still lose R/W capability.
The best approach would be to unlock your bootloader. I've heard some success with custom recovery, though stock recovery would be best bet.

This method did not work for me after i flashed back to 98.30.1 the stock recovery doesnt see the update and i just get the android logo. When i go to software updates the service is unavailable/
my bootloader has unlock. and does it mean I can have root permission after I flash the stock zip package?
OK here it is, black and white and very simple:
Bootloader Locked - NO ROOT, NO CUSTOM RECOVERY.
Bootloader Unlocked - CWM Recovery and FULL ROOT with SuperSu.
That's it, no if ands or buts.

[Stock ROM][LB/UB][4.4] Pre-Rooted 10.5.A.0.230

Hello,
I have my ZR (5503) rooted with 4.4 the bootloader is locked. Since I am not a dev or something i want to test it first. I tell what i did if a dev want to know how i did it.
I had a ZR with 4.1/rooted/recovery on it.
I used a 10.5.A.0.530 NCB file for to start.
I followed this guide (thread) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307311
Almost at the end you have to flash the created zip in recovery. After that i flashed the SuperSU_fix.zip and update-SuperSU-v1.86.zip (i dont know if it was needed).
Then i switch the mobile off and flash the FTF file (10.5.A.0.530NCB) with system excluded (flashtool).
After this i boot in 4.4 and then checked if i had root and it was. The recovery was lost but i managed to get it back with the ZRDUALRECOVERY
Now i go to do the proces again and make a tutorial and maybe put the files somewhere.
I am happy already,
Try to use the Remount reboot fix by nut
and use foldermount and check as this is the most important thing to me

[Stock ROM][LB/??][4.4] Pre-Rooted 10.5.A.0.230
Hello,
I found a way for to get root with kitkat 4.4 and a locked bootloader.
Try at won risk! I am not responsible for things that go wrong.
what you need for to start :
working recovery and root 4.1, 4.2 or 4.3 (i had a 4.1 android version)
Flashtool
steps:
download :
zrkitkat5503.zip https://mega.co.nz/#!DYZwTRhL!6kYealPTKNZT_YX7Zgp3gvs6BP7dcBcVa7FyZBw72qg
stripped rom 4.4 : https://mega.co.nz/#!2YZn3LyB!JKCaBQdMpkqxiO6UbbsXeF3aNgvaoe9Z6iNEERCF7aY
Update Super SU: https://mega.co.nz/#!LEIwGDCS!KVxVB-wYlClhblPY-g5MQ71D_7U2acd7hwwqAxJj20c
Recovery: https://mega.co.nz/#!GIpWEJjJ!0gEIZawEwKuvmEZ4LQm-4ZCmduoy7kxwxDLSResqvUQ
copy kitkatzr5503.zip to your external memorycard.
unzip the su-binary fix and copy it to memorycard.
boot in recovery and wipe cache partition, wipe Dalvik cache and wipe Data/Factory reset.
flash the kitkatzr5503.zip and after that flash the su-binary fix.
DONT BOOT!
power off and get your phone in flashmode , flash the stipped 4.4 rom with flashtool.
reboot and you will have root, install zrdualrecovery again and then everything works.
for sure someone else can make a more nice way for to install it but this works. And if someone make a better tutorial let me know. Also i dont have experience with MEGA for file sharing. If there is a better way let me know.
succes

[How-To] Root GS5 Active - G870A_OA1 - 4.4.4 (2/7/2015)

**Make certain that your reactivation lock in security settings is off before beginning this process**
1. Take the OA1 OTA update.
2. Download and install Towelroot-v3.apk(this version does not require internet access).
3. Place your phone into "Download Mode" (press and hold the Home, Volume Down, and Power keys until the phone powers on and displays warning screen, then press Volume Up key) and flash the G870A_NE4_Stock_Kernel using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
4. Open the Towelroot app from your app drawer and press "Make it Rain" to root your device.
5. Power off then boot into "Download Mode" again and flash the G870A_OA1_Stock_Kernel also using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
6. Install SuperSU to manage root access. Done!
Troubleshooting:
1. Should the OA1 OTA update fail consider flashing the G870AUCU1ANE4_Full_Odin.tar to return to factory stock then take the OTA updates to OA1. Or, place the G870A_NE4_to_NG3_OTA.zip and G870A_NG3_tA1_OTA.zip onto your ext-sdcard and sideload each file from stock recovery beginning with the G870A_NE4_to_NG3_OTA.zip. Once updated to OA1 continue from Step 2 above.
2. When flashing the kernel the most common cause of an Odin flash failure is a bad usb port or cable. Please check before reporting a failure!
Notes:
1. The above process will not affect your User Data or Knox Warranty Flag.
2. After flashing the NE4 kernel your phone will run a little wonky and towelroot may not root on the first try. If that happens reboot and try towelroot once again. Once rooted and after flashing the OA1 kernel your phone will once again run like a champ!
Alternative Method for Safestrap Users:
1. Place the G870A_OA1_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM onto your ext-sdcard.
2. From Safestrap recovery press "Backup" and backup your User Data.
3. From the main menu press "Wipe" then perform an "Advanced Wipe" and wipe everything but your ext-sdcard.
4. Next, press "Install," then select and install the G870A_OA1_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM.
5. Once complete, press "Restore" and restore your User Data.
6. Last, from the main menu press "Reboot," then "System." Done!
After following the above process your phone will pause on the AT&T splash screen for about 2 minutes before rebooting.
Notes:
1. The above process will not affect your User Data or Knox Warranty Flag.
2. The ROM will update your Modem, Non-hlos, System, Kernel, Stock Recovery, and Bootloader to OA1.
3. The "Backup" and "Restore" steps in the instructions are not mandatory but will greatly reduce your device's set-up time. All currently installed non-system apps and settings will be automatically restored.
4. The ROM does not contain BusyBox which is required by the Safestrap.apk. Download the BusyBox Installer to re-install BusyBox.
Let me be the first to comment...I rooted doing this but since I was already rooted I had to Odin back to ne4 then ng3 (sideload or ota, what ever works) and then update to oa1 (sideload or what ever works). After that, everything is exactly as the tutorial says.

Did you have to revert just the kernel or the whole ROM before you could install the OTA update? I'm currently Towelrooted on NG3 and patiently awaiting the OTA download.

I had to Odin the whole ne4 Rom and then from there use the ota update files to get to oa1 and then use the kernel trick to root with towelroot. Other wise it kept giving me signature errors even if I Odin'd just the system partition

Can anyone tell me whether the G870AUCU1ANE4 full odin tar file will reinstall previously deleted system files or not. I was thinking of using titanium backup to remove a lot of bloatware but want to know first if this will get me back to stock with all factory equipped apps. When I flashed this full odin tar so that I could update and then reroot, my home screen and all my apps went unchanged so I'm skeptical to believe it's similar to flashing the phone back to stock.
thank you for any help

So it will replace deleted system apps but leaves user installed apps alone?
Will performing a factory reset on this phone replace deleted system apps?
The phone i had prior was an s2 and when using odin to flash it with a stock rom, it would be similar to factory resetting it but when i flashed the full ne4 on this one, I still had all my apps and home pages, settings etc. I know the flash worked cause i was able to install the update that i couldn't before flashing due to towelroot.
I just realized the full ne4 file linked to in this thread (.rar zip file) isn't exactly the same as the stock firmware file available from sammobile (zip zip file). Is the ne4 .rar file linked to here modified to leave the users apps and settings alone?
Thanks. Worked great. :good:
I used safestrap. Very easy, after days of annoying update notifications.

I hadn't looked at the one on here but if it's a .tar.md5 then flashing through Odin should reset it back to ne4 stock out of the box with everything. I used the firmware to fully go back to stock

I rooted for the 1st time since getting my new s5 active. Well, it came w/3NG build; Got the OTA BEFORE my 1st attempt at root.
I installed ND via Odon, made it rain, rebooted, & am still on 4.4.4 (0A1A or something of the like.
Didn't even have to follow (or get to) the step to Flash newer kernal to get back to 4.4.4. Thanks all involved

You need to flash the newer kernel because your phone could have issues

@muniz_ri Your rooted stock rom worked like charm. Thanks bunch!
You were right bigwillg. Didn't really get a chance to test it 1st. After noticing choppy stuff & a bigger than usual battery drain, I "Odin'ed" the newer kernal. Now its like butter. Still on stock ROM with frozen bloat stuff. Considering uninstalling em all together at a future date. Gonna get to know my phone 1st I guess.
In case I didn't already hit thanks on OP, I soon will. And on a side note THANK you for this topic/forum.
Edit: Watch them push lollipop now. Literally right after I did this. Lol
Hi. Question? Does the Odin in the first post work on the phone, or would I need to use Odin on a PC? Sorry...been out of the scene for awhile lol

Unable to install latest OTA
My G870A was rooted before the previous OTA was sent.
This latest OTA gets to about 27%, then fails.
I have looked around to see how to fix this, yet I can't seem to find anything.
The steps here start with the OTA, so they're currently useless to me.
I have tried going back to 4, but towelroot has no way to remove root once set.
SuperSU mentions a removal of root, but it appears to be just to uninstall itself.
Anyone have any ideas?

You need to review the OP more thoroughly.
I repeated the steps, and this time it worked.
Don't know why it didn't work the first time. I don't think I missed any steps.

With the OC4 boot loader on the device I was able to flash the 'downgrade to nce' full rom in ODIN, documented steps from there to reassert root will work.

That is good news but I believe that you have been the only one able to successfully downgrade. Hope others that have had success chime in.
Just to confirm, that you took the 5.0 ota yesterday correct?

The sequence is silly, but whatever.
I started with 4.4.4, rooted, safestrap. Very light root usage - props file changed to enable SD card usage for more apps, logon sound replaced with silence, TiBu (with bloatware/et. al. frozen but not removed), ServiceDisabler, Busybox, Safestrap. Otherwise stock.
Made safestrap and Kies backups.
Used your zip under safestrap to wipe and restore, rebooted w/o odin flashing the boot/kernel from you the first time (didn't catch the reboot fast enough).
After allowing the device to sit black-screened for a few minutes to make sure I wasn't being impatient, I powered down, brought it up into download mode, and ODIN flashed your second step (bootloader/partitions/whatever else is in that flash).
Power cycled phone, it again locked up black-screen without getting even the Samsung animation.
Waited a few minutes to to be sure, and power cycled again to be sure.
Brought phone up, used ODIN to flash the 'downgrade to NCE' package.
Power cycled, phone booted normally, let it go into setup sequence but skipped everything until I could tell it to shut down.
Brought phone up, used ODIN to flash the next two OTA files to bring it to 4.4.4.
Again, power cycled, phone booted normally, let it go into setup sequence but skipped everything until I could tell it to shut down.
Brought phone up, used ODIN to flash the 5.0 OTA.
Brought phone up, runs as expected (of course, no root).
Addendum. I have extra fun with ODIN because my PC runs Ubuntu Linux, so I use Odin within Win 8 running inside VMware Player. Seems to work fine but I would never guarantee it doesn't introduce quirks.
I may at some point in the next couple weeks backstep and again try your safestrap based root-keep setup, but want to take some time with it 100% stock and see how things run.
Cheers.

Thank you, but based on what you have stated you never flashed the OC4 bootloader which explains why you were able to downgrade.
At this time there is no downgrade method for those that have taken the OC4 ota update.

YES! If your phone is on official ATT 5.0 OTA, then there is NOT a way to root or even downgrade to NCE. You will have to wait until root exploit is found or bootloader unlocked.

STEPS I TOOK TO ROOT.
You will have to start from scratch and factory.
Download on your pc and flash in download mode the G900A_Downgrade_to_NCE.tar using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+) This will bring device to stock factory.
Setup you phone first use.
Download and place the G900A_NCE_to_NG3_OTA.zip onto your ext-sdcard and sideload from stock recovery.
Flash the G900A_ND3_Stock_Kernel using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
Install Towelrootv3.apk and run app and update SuperSu
Install safestrap.
Make a nandroid backup with safestrap To ext-sdcard.
Extract the G900A_OC4_Stock_Rooted_Backup folder from the .rar archive and place it into the following folder: ext-sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/xxxxxx, fyi...the name of this folder will vary.
From Safestrap recovery press "Wipe" then "Advanced Wipe" and wipe everything but your ext-sdcard.
From the main menu press "Restore," then select and restore the G900A_OC4_Stock_Rooted_Backup.
Once complete from the main menu press "Reboot," then reboot into "Download" mode.
Last, flash the G900A_OC4_Stock_Partitions_wOA1_BL using Odin's PDA slot (AP in Odin v3.09+) and reboot.
All credit goes to Muniz_ri.

Stop giving wrong information! Did you read the OP? This is about downgrading stock OTA 5.0 and not rooting. You cannot downgrade if your phone is on official stock OTA 5.0……! You will brick your phone. The information you have provided only works if your phone is Still on NG3 or OA1. Again if your bootloader is already on OC4, then you cannot downgrade. The reason @muniz_ri method can be downgraded is that he using a 5.0 ROM while keeping the bootloader at OA1.

If you need help I solved my soft brick. Put your phone into download mode then flash the stock kernal using odin. Reboot then flash using odin the stock partition. While this wont downgrade to 4.4.X because you are on ota 5.0 you will be able to get your phone back to 5.0 lollipop. Thanks to Fitz110 who uploaded these files and for the solution. if you havea back up via TWRP restore it then flash back correct stock recovery there are several version for xt1068
if unsure see my signature for easy installer of 5.0.2 stock rom (blue links) this will restore everything to as new out of box

just install a recovery image to match rom - tell me build number and system version in about phone and i will find correct recovery from my collection and show you how to flash
as long as its a xt1068 recovery and you flash it correctly even if its wrong build version it wont do harm phone would boot and get ota updates - just wont install updates.........
xt1068 can take ANY xt1068 regional version of rom - i have made my UK phone a german/ brazil / global just by flashing regional versions of 5.0.2
Built number LXB22.46-28
System version 22.21.28titan_retaildsds.retaildsdsall.en.03 retin
you must have motorola device manager 2.5.4 installed (this installs titan fastboot drivers) you can re install and choose repair if unsure
download attached zip file to pc and unzip
plug in usb cable and put phone into AP FASTBOOT MODE
this is done by holding power and volume down till screen goes black and chimes then still holding volume down release power count to 5 and release vol down - should now be in boot loader / ap fastboot mode
run recovery flasher.bat from inside unzipped folder on pc
Thank you. And should I restore through twrp even though I'm still on stock ROM? Or just do what you said without bothering about anything else? Cause I'm rooted and I read in your other post that we need to unroot too?

Don't use kingroot! That's a very bad method to root your phone and also causes the long booting times. Also kingroot has nothing to do with chainfires rooting toolkit. That's ok and if you used it (after unlocking bootloader) I apologize.
In both cases do what @reefuge wrote, install the rom from his signature. Check if you got the right version for your model.
