Recently, I started getting a "not enough storage available" error when trying to install Handcent either from the Market or using a Titanium restore. I know it's not a space issue because all other apps that I have tried install with no problem. I am using A2SD and have about 400 MB free. I have duplicated this error on multiple ROM's so it must be something on my phone. I searched and found something about permissions on *.so files in the lib directory but I don't know enough to fix it myself. Here is a pastebin of the error:
http://pastebin.com/33gKG5Db
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I know this is a stupid question but ur not trying to install when card is mounted to computer r u. Also what app2sd r u using, is ur ext partition full, I've also noticed this when I thought I had room then went in and deleated a few old nandroids and then it worked great.
I had the same problem.
Go to Applications
Somewhere in there, there is a handcent registry that is different than the normal handcent program.
Scan through everything, you will find something like com.sms.handcent. Uninstall that as well as the program and you should be able to install.

I see it under applications but every time I click on it I get a f/c on settings (I get the f/c if I click on anything under applications that begins with com.). Any way to do it through ADB? I checked system/sd/app and didn't see the com.handcent.nextsms to remove?

yep... I have had this problem with a couple of apps. The real fun is sometimes that directory is named something completely different then the application name. Then you have to guess at what it is and then check /data/apps to verify it has a missing apk.
[Q] "Installation error - insufficient storage available" when installing skype
Hello Everybody,
this is my first post on this forum, i decided to start this thread cause i've been struggling with this problem for something like one month now, i really want to fix it, and this looks like the best place where to ask for help.
I'm having problems installing the Skype application on a Samsung Galaxy S, in Italy.
Initially i installed it from the market, the installation went fine, but i couldn't log in cause i was still running Android 2.1
After the upgrade to 2.2, Skype worked only the first time i tried to use it, then it started giving me a weird bug; basically each time i tried to make a call, it would say "already 2 ongoing calls".
I uninstalled it, and now each time i try to install it again i get the same error message "Installation error - insufficient storage available".
I have 5.22GB available on the internal SD card, and 573MB on the internal phone storage, and i have no external SD card.
I tried to contact the Skype support, sent them something like 10 different emails, but each time they came up with stupid answers and in the end they couldn't find a solution, so they said
"Please note that the message you are receiving is an operating system message and is not a Skype message.
We suggest that you contact Samsung to find out under which circumstances the operating system returns this message and what can be done to make an installation possible."
I tried to contact Samsung, but they didn't even reply.
I started a thread in the Android Market Help Forum and one guy suggested to use adb to delete the skype folder
So i rooted my device with z4root and also did the OneClickLagFix V2.2+
I managed to install the Android SDK and get the adb up and running, but when i try to delete the skype folder, this is what i get
# rm -R /data/com.skype.raider
rm -R /data/com.skype.raider
rm failed for /data/com.skype.raider, No such file or directory
#
basically there is no such folder..
at this point i really don't know what to do, and i hope that someone here is able and willing to help me.
I think i gave all the possibly needed information to help you fixing my problem, but if you need more please just ask.
Thanks a lot and by the way big up to this forum, so many useful informations in here!
Cheers
Pedro
update
i installed Titanium Backup
if i go to the Backup/Restore tab and scroll to the very botton, the last one is com.skype.raider, but it has a line on it and i'm not sure what that means (see attached image)
if i click it, all the options are grayed out, so i can't uninstall it..
if i click and hold, a different menu comes up, where most of the options are grayed out as well, i can only do Assign Labels, Explore and View in Market.
If i click Explore, it says:
com.skype.raider
files/
shared.lck 0B
defetto/
main.db-journal 8.0KB
any idea what's going on? thanks in advance
Never mind, i made it!
I bought an application from the market called Root Explorer, i couldnt find a free one doing the same, basically giving full access to my folder structure.
Anyway, i was able to find the com.skype.raider folder and delete it..
after that, next install went fine!
the correct path was /data/data/com.skype.raider
so if you have the same problem, you can use abd and delete the folder and you don't need to buy the above mentioned app..
p.s. how do i set this thread as answered?
Had a similar problem! I couldn't downlaod anything from the market. Unmounting the sdcard has fixed the issue. Thx http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Thank you for sharing your solution. It helped me solve the "insufficient" problem
I've given up trying to get full access to the Market. But I was able to find some of the apks on my Droid and was able to bring some of them over using a usb thumb drive. However, not all the apps I had downloaded to my Droid was visible. My question is do some apps delete their apks when done installing? I did have some that gave me a parse error when trying to install them on my tablet. Is there a hidden directory where I can find all the apks of the apps I've downloaded? e.g xplane, rush hour to name a few? Thanks. Or... is there a way to download the apk from Market to my PC directly? I'd be so happy if I could just get full access to google market!

The apks are usually in your data/apps or data/apps-private. You should be able to get to these directories using RootExplorer on your phone if its rooted. Then get yourself a free Dropbox account which allows you to transfer files to any device you installed Dropbox on.
Look in these two locations. In the second one (/mnt/asec) you'll see the folder name of the app and inside that folder is the pkg.apk so you'll probably want to rename after you move it.
/data/app
and
/mnt/asec/(name of app)
Have you tried these methods yet?

Bluetooth File Transfer might help.
I put this link up a few days ago because I had the same problem.

Also, This video really worked for me with getting full market (roughly 98.9% really)

Reggie 777, thanks for asking this question. I've been trying to figure out the same thing and asked about it in another thread but didn't get a clear answer.
So, to the experts: do you have to be rooted to do this? I've looked in both of the locations that tcrews mentioned and don't see much, if anything. I'm using Astro FileManager, if that helps.
Thanks

Astro doesn't show the files in /data and you'll need to be rooted and use something like Root Explorer. I just tried Astro and once I go in to /data I see nothing (and my phone is rooted). Using Root Explorer I see all the folders under /data and go into the folder app. I see my apps installed internally there and in /mnt/asec I see my apps installed to SDcard there.

No root neccessary to use Bluetooth File Transfer method.
I can only guess you need root for the method on the video because you do need to have an OS with GAPPS and Android market installed.
Root is needed to use Root explorer methed.
The Z4root1.2.2 app is a good tool to root without unlocking the bootloader and you can still keep your stock OS. However I'm assuming GAPPS may not work correctly with the stock TAPNTAP OS so getting full Google Android market with that OS is prolly not going to happen.
Thanks to everyone for the help. I am processing and digesting the info and playing around with the suggestions.
Thanks to sjmoreno for telling me where the apps are. And also tcrews. I would never have thought of looking in /mnt/sec. I was actually able to find the apks I was looking for... xplane. et al. Now I'm fiddling with the bluetooth transfer. Got the phone and tablet paired... connection is not working yet. But I'm still trying.
Thanks too to tekrhino for the bluetooth suggestion. Got the transfer program for my Droid. I'm learning how to use it. Seems easy to set up, but won't actually send anything... Still exploring it.
The video on the Market fix doesn't work for me because no matter what I do, Market does not show up in the running apps section of settings. It doesn't even show up in system apps. It only shows up in the downloaded section.
As they said in Galaxy Quest... "Never Give Up. Never Surrender." Thanks everyone.
I use TitaniumBackup syncing with dropbox, but really the market fix isnt hard... Running tntlite larest.
+1 for dropbox. You can also use astro to backup the apk's. They are stored in a folder named backup on the root of your SD card.
I use the program AndroZIP from the Market on my phone.
Do an application backup (part of the app) to my SDCard (it creates a app_backup folder on your SDcard)
Then, you can do bluetooth transfer, or plug phone and gTablet into PC with USB cables, wait for the drives to show up, and move the APK files over. Works well. No root required.
Since my phone is not rooted, I am not sure if this is grabing every application, but it seems to be. I was able to transfer whatever I wanted over from my phone to the tablet this way.
+1 titanium backup and dropbox.
Dropbox is handy but not necessary. Titanium is a must have purchase if you enjoy flashing new roms and don't feel like manually restoring all your apps and settings every time.
If you can download titanium to your Gtab your done. Dl titanium on your phone and backup your apps. Grab the file off your phones SD And move it to your Gtab. Open titanium on your Gtab and select the apps you want to install. You can even save app data this way and continue saved games from your phone ;-)

Make sure both devices have BTFT installed, that way you won't have any any problems with FTP OBEX protocals.
The app works great and reduces the extra steps you need to take with TB and DB with having to move apk's between the source device to your pc then from your pc to the target device. BTFT is a good source device to target device app.
Hey guys, I downloaded some apk's and transferred them to my sd/NC.
I went into file manager located the apks and click to install and I get the following error "installation of download apks is not supported"
This may have something to do with permissions, but you also may want to give ADB a shot. I know it's a bit of a pain to set up, but someone in the dev. forums posted some simpler drivers. I always install with ADB and it works like a charm.
Check to make sure you have "Unknown Sources" checked under Applications in Settings.
Can also try installing with a different file manager, I use Astro and that works.

i had the same issue with mine checked already, uncheck then re-check it fixed me up and for putting the apk's to nook may want to try dropbox makes things a hell of a lot simpler and here is a shameless plug to get me (and you some free space lol) use my referral link for extra 250mb of space http://db.tt/Zw55leX ;P

Good point, you may need to uncheck and recheck it if it's automatically set to "checked" by default when flashing.
I keep a "new ROM setup" folder on my SD card containing DropBox, RootExplorer,Titanium Backup, adbWireless and Terminal Emulator APKs to make setting up a new system easy.
I download the apk, email it to myself, use the gmail app, open the file, tap install, done. Haven't had any issues with 24+ install. I got tired of ADB to push it.
can a file manager be use to install .apk's that are missing from the market place? currently im missing google maps. ive heard about market manager to trick the market and get the full listings, however should this not work, like some have stated, can i download the .apk from my computer and install it using a file manager?
also for the life of me i do not understand nor can i get adb to work. i know its probably real simple. but im done messing with it, so that option is out.
Same Problem
I've got the same problem. "Install blocked. Installation of download apks not supported."
I've tried all the above suggestions: gmailed it, used various filemanagers, Dropboxed it and no success. I could not figure out how to change permissions....how does one doe that?
I haven't tried ADB - waiting to try everything else before I did that.
Please help me, i have a Galaxy S gt-i9000 with froyo (rooted) and i downloaded some custom dialer/ contacts and sms packs (it looked nice so i thought .. why not give it a try) but one of the apps said that its recommended to remove the default app so that it wont cause any conflicts. i wanted to uninstall the default dialer app but i ended up uninstalling the "Phone" app .. and now i cant use the contacts widget.. touching a contact wont pop up the menu with options (call, video call, send sms ..)
i wanted to check if i can try anything in Kies (restore or something) but my phone doesn't seem to be recognized anymore in Kies :|
Is there anything to be done?
any advice is deeply appreciated.
i have attached phone apk for you to install. you just need to unzip it and place it under /system /app and then reboot. make sure system is mounted RW
if that fails, reflash the ROM.
thank you for the prompt answer.
i downloaded the zip but i cant get to the root folder .. i mean .. i can only connect the phone in storage mode ...
should i try using a card?

You need either Root Explorer (paid) or Astro File Manager (free) from the market. Storage mode is fine, just copy the unzipped apk from your pc to the internal storage, then use one of the apps above to move it to /system /app.
Make sure you mount /system /app as rw or it wont paste.
ok so i copied it in /app ... asked me if i want to replace .. canceled and tried to run the phone apk that i already had ... it said App not installed.. so i copied and replaced the one from you .. and tried to run .. still no result :|

and from phone: Phone.apk, Phone.odex, Phone_Util.apk, Phone_Util.odex, PhoneErrService.apk, PhoneErrService.odex, PhoneSetupWizard.apk, PhoneSetupWizard.odex

Yep, it's the one with the green square, no Dialer.apk on my phone, just DialerTabActivity (apk&odex)Ok I've added a few into this rar, most you probably have, but I found 2 contact ones you didn't mention, so maybe they will help, these are all I have on my laptop that are related to the phone I think, see if they help.
you got a DialerTabActivity apk?
i copied all and overwrite them but still cant install the apps back. i would of wanted to keep my apps and stuff ... is there any other way to reinstall the default apps that i stupidly uninstalled? (Contacts, Dialer, Phone) dont know if it helps .. but i used the "Uninstaller for Root" app

Ok, I could be wrong here, but I'm fairly sure I read somewhere on here that you need to MOVE system apps, not COPY them, so go to system/app/ again and delete the ones you copied, then Move them from root of your sd to system/apps again. Then maybe try a reboot. I'm not sure this will solve it, but it's probably worth a try...
well ... no wireless here ... no wap on my sim ... cant get astro at the moment seems that everything i thought i was doing was bogus .. the file manager was saying that it was pasting/ copying/ deleting but it wasn't ... Sorry, I assumed you were using Astro, or Root Explorer.
Astro is free on the market so it should be ok for me to post it here (if not, someone tell me ok?).
Gimme a few minutes to upload it...
ok .. i'll wait as much as it takes .. just to get this bastard working
Hey, happy to help, if I'm actually helping lol. That's what the sites for
Ok I've attached Astro, but I'd recommend buying Root Explorer, it's what I use. Also I've included a pic of the permissions needed by each of the files I put in the rar. I don't know about Astro, but in Root Explorer you just long press the app to get to permissions menu. You may not even need them, I'm not sure. Will check back tommorrow to see if you're making any progress.
ok thanks once again .. and good night
well astro cant edit permissions .. or at least not the free version .. or maybe they changed it in newer versions (in case there are any)

Damn, that's a pity, that was the latest version from the market, think you should buy Root Explorer if you can.
Permissions aside, did you successfully move the files with Astro?
If you did, dont try to install them, try a reboot first, I think that's what I did when I put the email.apk from SGSII into my SGS.
Sorry I didn't solve your problem tonight, will try again tommorrow if you want
i couldnt even move them cause the app dir is read only ... same for the files ... so unless i can get an app that can edit permissions i cant try moving/rebooting .
