I never liked cellphones and avoided them for years until I got a Galaxy Note as a gift. I gave it a try but after a year of minimum use I can safely say that it doesn't appeal to me.
So I want to sell it, but the problem is in my attempt to like it I rooted it and it seems like resetting to factory settings with a root may cause on a brick, so I'm wondering, what would be the exact procedure I have to follow in order to get it to be as it was on day 1?
Model: GT-N7000
Android version: 4.0.4
Root: SuperSU
I mention SuperSU because it seems like it has an unroot option on It's menu. Do I just use that and then search for the factory reset option and I'm done?
Thank you for reading.

Yes, you can simply unroot using SuperSU or you can flash stock rom, whole procedure for that is mentioned in dr ketan's thread, look fot it and as you are on ICS dont do any wipes on stock recovery, use brick safe kernel.

As far as I remember I never did anything like flashing a rom... to be honest, I don't even know what that means, but I'm almost sure I never did it (although I would like to know how to see what "rom" I'm currently running just to be sure).
I just unrooted through SuperSU menu and I'm wondering what's the next step. I thought just going to system options and looking for reset to factory settings would do it now that It's unrooted but

this quote made me wonder, are you talking about the flashing rom method to unroot or to the step I should do now? Do I update to Jelly Bean and then do reset to factory settings?
I'm a little confused.
Thanks!

Just go to settings and about and see firmware version, build number and Baseband version should tell you if you are stock rom or not( not sure though have been using custom rom for too long now). Wiping from Stock Recovery might brick it not the factory settings from menu. Yes, update to JB from system updates it should be available if you are on stock rom or using Kies from pc connecting USB.

Hi there folks!
Im getting mighty confused about this flashing thing.
Im looking to change my ROM to something else then the ICS from Samsung.
Here is the deal.
I read the warning posts and it say (what i think it means) that my build "XLP9" ICS 4.0.3 from Samsung is not safe to do anything on.
I look around on the net to see if there is a way (despite what i read here).
It looks promising.
But all the things i find is ether a lower version of Android (like 2.3.x) or someone is telling me about tons of stuff to download and do before.
So this is were i ask you all.
Do (been searching for 2 days, perhaps my search terms are bad) anyone know if there is a working way to for me to change my version to AOKP for e.g without destroying my phone?
Like i said before, my Build is: XLP9, android version 4.0.3 (from Samsungs update service).
Phone is rooted using CWM.
Its a Note version for the .EU market bought like a few weeks ago (came with 2.3.x i believe).
If you know a thread that contains step by step instructions that will allow me to change the rom, please post it to me here.
Or if I´m screwed for updating to ICS just tell me so to
Cheers

Hello again.
Yet another day and cant locate any information that im after.
So i tought perhaps there is a way to downgrade the phone back to the factory settings (not ICS).
But since i did the upgrade to ICS is the old rom still on the phone?
I mean to reset it back (same as thode recovery discs on a computer).
Any help or points in the right direction is helpfull at this time.

It have too many method to change from stock rom to custom rom or aokp. My suggestion is choose your favourite rom and read carefully with the installation method provided at op, then you be fine.

Now that you have upgraded to ICS. Those are the factory settings.
Easiest way to downgrade to GB Is by flashing a stock GB rom via pc Odin.
Most of the new ICS custom ROMs now just require you to install AbyssKernel 4.2, then select advanced options and select reboot recovery. Then you wipe your device (wipe data, cache and dalvik cache). From this moment you're free to flash. It all takes less then a minute if you hurry (joking, don't rush when flashing your phone), and it's not very complicated. Do it once and you'll know it's simple.
You need to have a root access first. Plenty of guides how to do it out there.
Hello.
On Saturday I've updated Android on Galaxy Note from Gingerbread to 4.0.3, which I believe is ICS. The update was done via Settings->About phone->Software update and completed without any errors.
Unfortunately, right after the first boot problems began.
First of all, Android informed me that TWLauncher is not responding and asked if I want to wait for it to stop or force close it (someting like that). I've googled it and found out that I can replace the default laucher with another one. I decided GOLauncher EX is looking nice, so I've installed it and using it now.
Still, once in a while I get a message saying that "Unfortunately, Email has stopped". This freezes the phone for a couple of seconds. The Email application doesn't work and, if started, just shows an animated busy circle for a moment, then a black screen, only to eventually exit to home screen and display the mentioned message. GMail app, on the other hand, works just fine.
Also, sometimes the phone freezes for a moment or displays some gibberish on the screen (the latter happened only once though).
Could anyone please explain me what is happening? Why am I having so many problems after this update and how to fix them? I've read about that brick bug in ICS, but only after I browsed the forums in search for an answer to my problem. Could it be that I'm beginning to suffer it right now?
I'm very confused and unsure what to do next.
I'd really appreciate some advice on this matter.
P.S. Some system info:
Android version: 4.0.3
Baseband version: N7000XLPT
Kernel version: 3.0.15-N7000XXLQ3-CL646962
P.P.S. I wasn't sure if I should be posting this here on in the Android section...
Go to Settings - Backup & reset - Factory Reset. This will wipe off your data on your phone.
This is recommended after you install ICS. Remember to backup your phone before u do the factory reset.
Yours Sincerely

Remember if you factory reset on ics you may brick your phone. You will then need a motherboard change. You should downgrade to gingerbread first then factory reset and then update to ics

downgrade to 2.3.6 using Odin. Do factory reset from stock recovery and upgrade to 4.0.3 via kies or Wifi. After upgrading do wipe cache only, do not factory reset, probably it will brick your note.

First of all, I'd like to thank you all for your interest in my problem.
Please forgive me my questions that will follow, but I'm dilettante when it comes to modern cell phones and I'm overwhelmed by the amount of information, that I have to absorb in order to return the Note to its former state.
After reading your posts guys, I've been browsing the forum for a while in order to find the correct way of downgrading and I've stumbled upon this list:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762080
Is this list safe to follow, without no.5 that is? I've noticed the [Stock ROMs] thread in your signature, dr. Ketan. I believe the ROM I should choose is :
Code:
N7000XXKKA ------ 2.3.6 2011 November------- N7000PLSKK1 -----------------Poland (PLUS)
You should downgrade to gingerbread first then factory reset and then update to ics

But wouldn't it lead to the same problem I'm currently facing? Or should I have had done a factory reset of Gingerbread before updating to Ice Cream Sandwich in the first place?
What eludes me is why Google makes new version of Android available to the public via official channels (Settings->About phone->Software update), without checking first if it won't cause any serious harm to certain product line (Galaxy Note in this particular case).
Also, does anyone know why my Note have downloaded and installed LQ3 instead of LPY (Poland)? Does it matter?
i recently upgraded ota from xxlpy to xxlrg. unit is original n7000 germany. never used Odin or such to install firmware.
the problem is, on every restart, the note will say that it is upgrading and installing new apps similar to what happens when the first boot after upgrading. this will take a long time to start from power off or reboot. verified this happens every time. this never happens before when i upgraded from gb to xxlpy.
everything else seem to run ok . i have root and unrooted using simple unroot with supersu without problem. i have titanium pro for backup but afraid to factory reset because of the brick issue. appreciate any feedback.
thanks.

nope. tried that just to make sure. that setting is for checking if there are any new updates available. thanks anyway. if you read my post again, what happens is that the upgrade to XXLRG (4.0.4) was successful, just that it does the first boot installation (s-memo, crayon. wallpaper etc) again and again on each reboot or start from power off. this makes reboot taking more than one minute. others have same problem?
any guru here have some clue?

anyway, today another OTA notification saying theres another update.

You need to do factory reset. Either to go back to GB and then do wipe, or flash a safe ICS kernel (speedmod, notecore, franco, etc) and do full wipe in recovery. Never do factory reset or full wipe in stock ICS.

if your getting every reboot on your phone 'Android is upgrading applications..', case here is that you have some apps (I would guess you restored apps from titanium pro) that are deodex and some are odex. Check on your apps again under titanium apps and delete all odex files extension for the same app name. There might be one or more apps that have odex files inside. This is the cause of that message everytime you reboot your phone.
Or the simple way is go back to Stock GB, upgrade again to XXLRG and when you have everything already flashed to LRG.. DON'T restore apps anymore (from your Titanium backup), go clean from now on in just redownloading those apps you have fresh in Google play.
Cheers!
Hi Folks
Im a new proud owner of a Note, just got it today and loving it so far, waiting for JB in March though .
Ive checked and my Note has the "YES insane chip", however, i only flash Stock roms through odin and use Stock recovery after each flash, so am I right in reading that its only custom ROMS and Kernels that can brick it, so I never have to worry about it bricking or is there something i should be careful of when flashing stock roms as well.
Thanks
No, if you wipe your data through a factory reset there is a high chance in bricking the device.

Samsung claims, that recent stock recoveries are safe, no one knows for sure if that's true.
If you want to be absolutely safe, use a recent custom kernel, those are known to be safe, since they completely disable the broken erase function.

I did a factory reset > wipe Cache earlier and it booted ok thankfully. Im on UK XXLRK 404 (July 2012) so how recent do Samsung mean, but it seems to be on all 404 Roms (s2/Note), but thanks for the heads up... can I just say though that I would Never "Factory Reset" through Settings because im not sure if it wipes the cache or does much really, also the next and only update ill be doing will be JB 412 in March, if it arrives
Cheers
Can I just ask, when JB comes out in a few weeks, would you recommend to flash a safe kernel first, then update to JB.. or because Im Updating, should I just flash straight to stock JB in ODIN, then reset through Stock Recovery.
EDIT:
Also, Im new to this device so could anyone recommend a safe fast kernel to use with a stock 404 Rom.. Unrooted
Thanks
speedmod, Philz, hydracore.. all are safe
if you are not rooted then update via kies. or via odin.. dont do reset in stock recovery of ICS... or JB yet as not yet confirmed safe.. may be after the sources come out.. one of the devs can confirm it
I was trying my hands on ubuntu from paranoid, but flashed ics, and mistakely i didnt wipe anything before flashing,so i did wipe on ics kernel, so it was stuck on bootloop ,but i could enter recovery and download. so i first flashed philz kernel and did a wipe and downgraded to gb. So i want to know is this the emmc brick bug or a soft brick..
so if your phone is working you were lucky..

Hey guys, the thing is I tracked down a Note 1 running 4.0.4 unroot, but is running terribly at this point. I think it is due to so many apps install and present on the homescreen. It is available for 'bout $200 (all my budget, in South East Asian it's pretty big, so bear with me). If I get it, I'd definitely flash it to 4.1 or newer, as I can't bear the lag on 4.0 now.
So, any advice on whether I should get it? Is the thing flashable? I mean, I have an Galaxy tab 10.1 so I'm kinda familiar to flashing, but as the newcomer, I'd like to ask is there any difficulty flashing this thing, anything I should be aware of before bricking it?
Thanks in advance guys! All advice is greatly appreciated!
Yes, it very easy to flash Note

If you follow the ''HOW TOO's'' then you should not get any brick or issues. I flashed so many Rom- and Kernel's and i never got a brick.
Alwas be on a Safe Kernel. More information is on the General N7000 Forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1347
The previous owner is a 10th grader I tutored, I doubt he knows anything 'bout root or flashing so I think that's not the trouble here. One thing on my mind is that in my country there's still no JB 4.1 OTA yet, at least not until some weeks ago. So, after some basic reading, I got something planned out:
_ Never factory reset while on stock ICS => I should push stock JB through Odin =>safe kernel => push CWM through Odin =>root =>flash some CM goodness
Hell, if stock JB is smooth, I might even stop at rooting.
Basically, that's the right order of this, right?
Somebody better stop me before I mess up something. Haha
Oh, I'm late to the party so what rom can you guys recommend, help me save some time shopping here.

I'd say don't take your chances by going the short way. To be sure you could flash a safe kernel through Odin and then use it's CWM to wipe and flash your stuff. That's what I've done when I got my note and never even got close to the brick bug.
If you really don't understand bullocks of android, just follow carefully the instructions on Dr. Ketans guide thread and you should be fine

By "bricking", you meant soft brick or boot loop, didn't you? Couldn't imagine a device bricked twice in its life.
Well, let's just presume I'm on stock ICS unroot with unsafe kernel. First I can flash Philz's kernel and CWM (all in one zip file) in stock recovery. That means with that I'm rooted + safe kernel +CWM, then free to factory reset, wipe or flash anything, right?
Couldn't find back which thread says "Never factory reset on stock ICS", I swear I saw it somewhere in these N7000 box.
Oh, and I'm from Vietnam, but I don't understand what my location has anything to do with this, as most Android devices in Vietnam use US firmware.

Yup. That's a safe procedure. It's important you don't wipe anything while you are at your stock kernel. Only after you flashed the safe kernel AND REBOOTED TO THE NEW RECOVERY
