Milestone 3 - CyanogenMod and no service - Motorola Droid 3

I already had the entire thread typed out, and then I went to preview it, and then the page went white and I lost all my work. gg no re, let's try this again
I own a Motorola Milestone 3. It's like the Droid 3, but the Milestone 3 is made by nTelos. The only difference between the two phones is the network that they use. nTelos doesn't use SIM cards.
I flashed CyanogenMod using SafeStrap. I had to use a Droid 3 ROM because none exist for the Milestone 3. The flash went well, everything worked, but I don't have any service. I tried playing around with the mobile carrier options and setting it to CDMA, but that didn't work.
Strangely, the notification bar says I have one new voicemail, and under that, it says to dial *86. On my stock ROM, I had one new voicemail, but I have to dial my own number to get to voicemail, and not whatever *86 is. (I was too lazy to call myself to get rid of that one voicemail.)
Am I screwed, or is there a solution? Thanks in advance!

CM10, because it's the only version available to download.
I followed the tutorial on the CM wiki to flash it on my phone. I googled "droid 3 cyanogenmod" to find it.
In that tutorial was the download link to the CM10 nightly builds for the Droid 3. I think I mentioned in the OP that nightly builds were the only option.
I can't provide direct links because the 10 post limit.

what is the model # for your phone on label under battery? XT861
do you have a sim card slot? with the XT862 a sim card is needed for CM10 even on CDMA see D3 JB Airplane Mode issue. ***SOLVED WITH SOLUTION***
or it could be an APN issue.

It's an XT861. I think I have a SIM card slot; it's wider than the microSD card slot and it sits just below the battery. I doubt I do, but I'll see if I have an old SIM card lying around somewhere.
Update:
I don't have a SIM card. I've tried playing around with the APN settings, but that didn't work. I googled nTelos APN settings, but I'll see if I can find anything else.
Update two:
Can't find anything to help my situation and I don't feel like going out and getting a SIM card. I don't think messing with my APN settings are going to help anything, because on my stock ROM settings app, the APN menu (or whatever you wanna call it) is grayed out. Therefore, I assume configuring it isn't gonna help my cause if the stock ROM doesn't even use them.

VZW -> T-Mobile ?

Like most Droid 3 owners I'm sure, I'm tired of paying ~$105 a month for cellphone service through Verizon that I could be paying ~$70 a month for through T-Mobile.
I've read the other thread here associated with unlocking the GSM portion of the Droid 3, but a lot of it seems to be shrouded in maybes and varied successes with a limited pool of test devices to draw on.
From what I gather thus far, the following is true:
- You can unlock the GSM capability of the Droid 3
- You can operate it on T-Mobile
- If you do, you will only get "Edge" connection speeds - No T-Mobile HSPA+ or 3G speeds. "Edge" only, at 512 kb or something like that.
Can anyone confirm this? Is there a way to get a Droid 3 to operate on T-Mobile's network at full speed?
Is there a more reliable and easier to use method to convert a stock VZW Droid 3 to something operable on T-Mobile?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can accurately answer these questions.
The only thing I've seen that works is using the xt883 Chinese ROM and it only gets edge. Edge is fine for me, but I want a better ROM with access to Android market.
Im still learning how this device works; I just installed Safestrap and tried to flash the GSM CM7 ROM today, to no avail. I flashed a custom ROM on my Droid 2 last year, but it's been a while on the G2x which isn't as locked down.
I flashed the CM7 GSM ROM on the safe mode partition, thinking that was how to do it, but I got an error trying to back anything up because /system wouldn't back up. Then when I flashed the ROM it wouldn't boot. Im wondering if I was supposed to flash the ordinary CDMA CM7 first, then use the GSM one, since it's named 3gedit.zip. I haven't tried that yet though, and the fact that /system isn't backing up worries me. I didn't create a partition on internal with Safestrap, but I flashed the GSM CM7 ROM from coreless in safe mode and it wouldn't boot. Got back to non-safe mode and my stock ROM was fine, but I still want to see a good back up :-/
Any ideas from more experienced users would be great. I'm pretty much a blind guinea pig right now lol. I just really want to see CM7 on this D3, and have it work on T-Mobile so I can retire my G2x for a little while.
Thanks in advance

note: This is not tied to any specific rom, it is not using the chinese rom it is simply taking the radio off the chinese rom which is all we need. It hasn't changed anything to me in user space that I have noticed.
I would recommend unlocking, rooting, flashing the radio, and editing the build.prop.
1. Unlock or online sim card unlock code seller but less reliable.
a) Meet the following requirements:
* Must be a Verizon Wireless customer.
* The phone being unlocked must be active on a Verizon Wireless line of service.
* The line of service must be active at least 60 days.
* The line of service must be in good standing for the past 60 days.
* Only one SIM Unlock per line every 10 months.
b) If you don't meet one or more of the above requirements, call anyway. You may still get lucky.
Call 1-800-711-8300 (Verizon Global Support) and ask the representative for a SIM unlock. Occasionally a representative may not know exactly what you are referring to; make sure you are not transferred to a different department. You are in the right place. Explain that they should have a walkthrough on how to do this, and that it allows for the use of local, non-Verizon SIM cards while traveling abroad.
c) Insert a foreign SIM into the SIM card slot on the side of your phone and then enter unlock code.

All you have to do is flash the radio.img from SOLANA_SLNCT-57.1.60_Fastboot in fastboot mode
Code:
moto-fastboot flash radio radio.img
then add the following lines to the build.prop
Code:
persist.ril.rssi.enable.param6 = 1
persist.ril.baudrate=230400
I can confirm this works with an AT&T sim in an unlocked phone, tested with stock and liberty 2.0.

I have called out, received a call and a text, I have checked my account information with the tmobile app on edge. I have been led to believe that its hardware that tmobile can only do edge since they use some non standard bands.

Even if you go through all of that you I'll still have only EDGE because our radios don't use the 700 MHz. Just sell it and get a phone for T-Mobile.

Thanks for replying. That's where I wound up going on my own because I was trying to use his CM7 last night. Can't seem to get it to flash though. Backing up with Safestrap isn't working either...getting an error because /system won't backup for some reason.
I think I'm gonna flash everything back to stock, uninstall Safestrap, and try the above from the beginning. I'd like to see if I can at least get edge and below on T-Mobile using a US ROM.
Thanks again!

So, I have a couple of lines on VZW, but they are all used by family members on my account, and I don't have a VZW SIM. The guy who sold me the phone said he already unlocked it, and I believe him, but is the SIM an issue and is there any way to know if the phone is still unlocked? Can an unlock be undone after wiping internal sd?
I'm asking because I think I can just not worry about that step, but I want to double check. I put it back to stock 2.3.4, now showing 5.6.890 xt862 instead of whatever the xt883 was. I did this to get rid of the previous owner's Google account. Edge, calling and text were working on T-Mo when I bought the D3 a few days ago. When I put my SIM in now, however, and change it to GSM/UMTS mode, there are no operators available when I tap on the list and of course it doesn't work yet. I understand this is due to putting it back on stock lol, but I'm gonna go ahead and try flashing the radio and seeing what happens.
It's already rooted using zergrush. Has safestrap and I can boot into it by rebooting/pressing menu, but my /system folder won't back up. That's the only sign that something is wrong other than the fact that no ROMs will flash in safe mode. I've already left comments on Hash's site, so I'm waiting over there too. Figured I'd pop in here again real quick
Thanks.
UPDATE (from the other forum):
My Droid 3 is working on T-Mobile for voice and text. This is exactly what I wanted. Got some great in-depth help on this one, especially from @tspx23. Thanks a ton! This will be my daily driver now until we switch to VZW, at which point this will turn into a back up, unless I fail to find something else worth a contract at that point lol.
I might write a guide later on if anyone wants it. The process is easier than it seems, as long as you have it in plain english lol.
Thanks to anyone who contributed to this!
Is it possible to mix this with a current rom instead of flashing a random Chinese one, like infuse with cm7 or liberty?
Tmo has horrible coverage and awful customer service. Cs is all nice to you but lies about everything constantly. They did nothing but screw me. That's the whole reason I'm on verizon now. At least now I have coverage and won't be lied to whether or not I have it, or be told to get wifi and then u can make calls since u don't have service.

I don't know of anyway besides a sim card to check if its unlocked and I am not sure a verizon one would ask for the sim unlock code even if it was locked but sim cards can be really cheap. If your phone was unlocked that will never be undone, if it was working on tmobile before you reverted to stock then it is unlocked, it would not have worked using tmobile otherwise.
are you using the latest version of safestrap, he released a bugfix version pretty recently? Could you be more descriptive of what you did while in safestrap?
It is not rom specific as far as I know, I am just using the stock one.
@Darksurf, I agree. I never had them but before I moved they didn't cover my old town. Verizon may be expensive but at least they tell you they will rape you at front and explain all charges.

I'm staying on T-Mo till they go under. They are cheap and I have unlimited Edge, which is all I can get on this phone anyway lol. Only ten bucks a month for data, since I have an older package from before they tried to hike their rates.
My D3 is having some issues after I reboot, and sometimes just randomly, it will lose all signal and tell me that my preferred operator cannot be found or error connecting. I have been just rebooting and sometimes wiggling my SIM around to see if it fixes, and it does.
Only other thing that is a little weird is my phone thinks it's an xt883, even though I'm on the stock VZW ROM. I'm wondering if this is causing some issues that I'm not qualified to really diagnose lol. Usually after I reboot, I have some of my google apps' names in Chinese, but I'm not sure if that is from radio.img, new build.prop, or from changing my bloatware to .bak.
Also, be advised that if you remove bloat, conversations.apk breaks incoming text if it isn't seen by the system. I added .bak to the end of it and could send texts to my wife, but couldn't get any messages. I changed it back and texting works fine. I use Chomp SMS, but that didn't seem to matter.
Have fun
P/S: also, when choosing operators in settings, you have the option for T-Mobile 2G, AT&T 2G or 3G. Just to confirm ;-) probably because AT&T's 3G bands are the international standard, right?
when you flashed the stock rom back onto it did you delete the /system partition and do a factory reset on your device before you did it?

I'd love to see someone put these mods into a ROM, but I'm not sure if any of it is compatible with existing ROMs. I also accomplished this on stock. When I get around to flashing CM7 again (or trying to at least lol), I'll post about how it goes.
I'm thinking that when I wiped my phone, the unlock remained but the radio.img that was on the Chinese ROM was undone or lost. Flashing it was easy though, using cmd mentioned earlier in this thread. I just needed help figuring out how to set it up, since I'm a noob at command line lol.
After that, I downloaded adb and tried to use other commands I've found (which claimed to work, but didn't for me somehow) to change out the build.prop. This failure was likely my fault lol but I found it easier to just use Root Browser lite to back up my original build.prop then replace it with the modified one.
I figure that if my SIM doesn't work after flashing some other ROM, I'll just try the two main steps again and see if it works then. If anyone really wants to do this, it isn't too hard or not worth it in my mind. I also figure this phone will be relevant enough for a while longer, considering I am cool with Edge speeds, I certainly won't mind being stuck with VZW's 3G whenever we change over. I am in no hurry to get LTE battery suck or bulkiness either. I'll wait for a little more refining to be done on that end before I upgrade from this phone
I am interested in making the phone compatible on T-Mobile / ATT by flashing XT883 radio. I have one question: Will the "unlocking" turn the phone completely GSM phone so it can no longer work on CDMA network?
Thanks.
Probably until you flash the Verizon ROM back I would assume.
Sent from my XT862 using XDA App
No. XT883 is also CDMA compatible, so the ability to use CDMA should stay. You might need to do *228 though.
You unlock the phone via carrier unlock code, e.g. they give you a code via email or over the phone allowing your gsm functions to work with foreign sim cards (other than the one they come with). After getting the unlock code and flashing the xt883 radio.img (and changing/replacing your build.prop) you can still choose to use cdma. Flashing this radio (which I'm currently using on T-Mobile) doesn't make your phone incompatible with cdma and is reversible. You would simply have to flash the original radio.img and change back your build.prop, or just flash a regular cdma ROM. I plan to do this some time next year if/when T-Mobile goes under and my wife and I switch to Verizon. In the mean time, I only get edge on T-Mobile (using it on AT&T will get 3g), but I have cheap and unlimited data (legacy data plan $10) and a great phone with keyboard. I'm using the stock ROM, rooted, but will eventually try CM7 with the gsm tweak. I will likely have to reflash the xt883 radio.img and change my build.prop (I think).

Suddenly lost SIM visibility...?

I'm running the latest Cyanogen 9 Nightly. While texting I set my phone down and it suddenly lost signal.
So far I've tried re-flashing, wiping data, restoring older backup, other SIM cards and always with the same result. "NO SIM CARD"
I've never used any micro-SIM adapter or anything like that, so I doubt the pins are damaged...
Could there have suddenly been an EFS-related issue?
First time I've encountered this, so...any thoughts...?
I had this issue a few times when changing SIM cards,
I eventually solved it by having to "Wedge" one of my SIM cards in for it to be picked up, the other however works without issue so I suspect I have a faulty card due to the time it's spent in my wallet..
I'll try to re-flash to stock GB.
I have absolutely nothing showing up in my APN menu.
I'll try configuring it manually from someone else using the same provider...
Bad timing....really bad...

You should be able to check your EFS folder, But I think it's unlikely if it just "Happened" a while after the flash..

Try inserting sim other way around.
Or check if lockscreen is working at all. You might have to, in ics do some special stuff.
Go to settings, security and check if you can lock the sim and change pin. Just try that to check if lockscreen functionality is down. If it is, check my threads, in statistics section in profile, I might have experienced something similar.

SIM security doesn't work. It's as if the SIM card isn't even there...
Well, its easy to dammage connectors, check if they are bent.
If not and simcard inserted right way try the fix in the thread I posted anyway. You do need to be rooted for that.
Also check if efs is still there and emei is correct. Dial *#06#* for that.
If after reboot it still doesnt work, and you have tried other roms. I'd suggest going back to stock condition unrooted and call upon warrentee. Seems to be special hardware issue.

Do you still have the imei number
I wanted to add a me too here, under the same circumstances. I have not yet flashed to a stock ROM yet, but will try. I doubt I have the warranty option. Hope to find a positive solution.
Using CM9 based paranoid Android.
I had the same problem when I got my note thought it was a faulty phone but took it to my local Vodafone store and it was the sim card itself the chip had worn away and was not making a connection...the sim card was only two years old so if its an old sim that good be ur problem and not the phone itself...

I forgot to add that I can rule out my SIM card as I have several phones to test on. In my mind, this leaves software and hardware.
Out of curiosity, are the radios (basebands?) flashed for each new ROM, or is it just for a major upgrade?
I think I've discovered my issue at least. I am nearly certain that it is related to heat. Web browsing while charging, playing resource heavy games, using gps in a hot car will cause the radio to fail. If I restart, radio is still gone as long as the phone is still hot. Allow it to cool naturally, or put it in the refrigerator for a short while, and radio is back.
I think my goal now must be to find the coolest kernel / ROM combo while I am using this as a phone. Perhaps motivation for the Note 2?

I was hasty...the issue WAS my SIM card. My Skyrocket was probably much less sensitive to the corruption than the Note.

[Q] Any software that would mess up modem to prevent signal?

Before I buy another used Captivate to swap motherboards, I'd like to know if there's anything else I should look at.
Scenario: Bought used Captivate with bad USB port and running CM9 Beta. Once I finally got my SIM card, I had no network signal (couldn't even find any operators when you search for them). Redid the APNs multiple times though those seem to be for Internet and MMS rather than cell. Wifi works fine. Flashed to CM 9.1 stable. No difference. Verified phone is unlocked. Verified IMEIs match. Verified baseband was listed. Verified my phone # is listed. Flashed to CM 7.1. No difference. I wanted to flash to stock but can't because Mobile Odin won't work with CM's partition layout. Thus, it seems I am stuck with CM or MIUI.
Is there anything in efs or another system directory that could prevent me from getting a signal?

I've been with you on another thread so I know for a fact you've tried all that stuff. But I don't recall did you ever try to flash an new or different modem? If you haven't or just want to try a new one I attached the one I use. Or I can get you the link to a page with a whole lot of others to choose from.
Other than trying a new modem I'm at a loss as to what it could be besides hardware at this point. Btw were you ever able to test your sim card in another phone to make sure it's functioning? Or do you know anyone with an att sim that you could test your phone with?
Things you could try:
1. Turn the flight mode on and then turn it off and see if that helps.
2. Open the phone and see if the antenna's contact points are okay.
3. Open the nv_data.bin in efs directory and see if the value at the offset(you can search for the exact value) that stores the network lock flag is 00. If it is 01 then it is still locked. I know you checked for the lock already but it never hurts to double check. You could also take a look at nv.log and see if there is anything there at the end that might be helpful. Other than trying a new modem I'm at a loss as to what it could be besides hardware at this point. Btw were you ever able to test your sim card in another phone to make sure it's functioning? Or do you know anyone with an att sim that you could test your phone with?

My next move was to flash some other modems actually, but I may wait until after tomorrow (see below). I tried to swap with my SIL who is on the same service but her phone takes the micro SIM. I'll try again Wed night with another choir member that has an ATT S2 I think.

You could also check for lock by dialing *#7465625#.

1. No help.
2. Where are the contact points? I've not found any schematic or disassembly instructions for this phone. I can see the external antennae connector, of course.
3. That was how I verified it was unlocked. All the bits in the appropriate area were 00. I'll have to look at the log file.
How would I dial any service code with no service? It tells me "mobile network not available" once I hit the Phone button.
New Info
I'm really hoping this is the answer to all my headaches the past several days trying to figure out why this phone won't get service. I just spent the past hour on the phone with my OLD carrier trying to re-activate my OLD phone with a different number to give to my son. We had to jump through a bunch of hoops because my old line was still "suspended" because of the port order. It is due to be "deleted" tomorrow. So even though my NEW carrier said activation was complete and my OLD phone stopped making and receiving calls 8 days ago, could the fact my number has been "suspended" be the reason I can't see any GSM networks?
Sadly my SIM worked in another phone but his didn't in mine.
Looks like I have a mini netbook.

I'm not getting ANY signal. It always shows -110 dbM or less and 0 or 1 asu. The seller said the GPS worked fine, but I don't get a lock on that either (but maybe you need to "fix" the GPS with each ROM flash?). I've only been concerned with cell service at this point.
I'm going to pick up another Captivate in another hour. I'd like to root and unlock it right there to make sure it works, but don't think I'm that good yet to do quickly and safely. Assuming it's running KK4, the Easy Root pgm seems simple enough to root. May also try SuperOneClick.
For unlocking, I'd hoped to use Galaxy_S Unlock, but couldn't figure out how to get it onto my micro SD card to load onto the other phone.
The "new" Captivate works. It came with KK4 and a good USB port. I'll flash something onto it soon once I learn how to properly back up everything.
glad your new one works.
re: old phone gps. i think you may need to edit gps.conf in etc folder to set gps mode to standalone, rls the gps wants a network connection. in standalone mode, expect a v long time to lock, like 15 minutes.

If you start the phone without a sim card in it, does it detect its absence and vice versa too? If that functions properly then another possibility could be that the IMEI of the phone might be blacklisted. It might have been reported as stolen. You could call your carrier to find that out.

Yes, it detected whether a SIM was in it or not. When I had signed up for the new service it had said the IMEI was OK. I guess that doesn't mean it stayed that way. I would think that would just prevent you from accessing the service, not prevent you from detecting a signal at all. When I picked up the second used Captivate, his SIM card had been deactivated, but it still showed it was getting a signal.

Once I had my efs folder deleted while flashing a rom and my IMEI defaulted to some value and it showed no signal at all. I checked IMEI and realized it was a different one and that led me to look at the efs. Once I restored the efs folder from my back up, all was fine again. Therefore I think if your IMEI is blacklisted it could happen and hence made that suggestion to call your carrier. Your carrier might also be able to tell you if your phone made any attempts to register on their network or not.

Potential Solution for Unlocking Bands on Droid 4 in US

Hi Everyone,
I'm not sure how to try this out, since I'm not in the US, and that RadioComm doesn't work for my Droid 4 (it's been upgraded to ICS)
1) Install latest Motorola drivers and RadioComm
2) Launch RadioComm
3) When it RadioComm launches, Click Main -> MA -> Common -> MDM 6x00
4) Click Settings -> USB -> PST USB
5) Click on FTM Common 1
6) Connect the phone to the PC and wait for it to go green
7) Under NVAccess, find the following values:
4870, NV_GSM_850_CARRIER_SUPPRESSION_I
4871, NV_GSM_DCS_CARRIER_SUPPRESSION_I
4872, NV_GSM_1900_CARRIER_SUPPRESSION_I
8) For each value, press Read, then replace all of the numbers with 0. Once done, press write. Repeat for all 3 values/
Let me know if this works!
Again, I mentioned a problem with RadioComm. I'm using Windows 8 x64, RadioComm worked fine with my Bionic on GB, maybe it's an ICS thing, maybe I need newer drivers, etc... Please let me know if this works!
I was able to get this going on my Droid Bionic (which also had a corrupted IMEI number) so if you want to see that post, view it here :

This looks awesome -- I saw your post in the Bionic forum. I was curious if this worked for anyone in the states on T-Mobile? I was looking to get a Droid 4 and use it on Straight Talk. Currently have an Epic, but loved my OG Droid. 3G is fine enough for me -- just curious if anyone is also able to get MMS working as well, along with APN settings?
What version of RadioComm do you recommend? I've tried 11.9.0 and I get the error when I try to open it:
"Error in getting the pointer to CommP2K and/or CommQC. Error number: Exception of type 'System.Exception' was thrown."
If you can help me get past this error, I'd love to try this out...

Awesome, I'll give it a shot when I get home. Out of curiosity -- I'm assuming this is similar to QPST. If I bork the modem, I should be able to go back to a prior group of settings, right?
SIM Card should be coming in on Saturday or Monday -- so should be able to get some news to everyone by then.

Shoot. I've read that you can get 3G on AT&T without any problems across forums -- did I misread and this was for international use -- not inside the US? I just want to get 3G on AT&T if possible...
Any thoughts? Or can you point me in the right direction?

Still trying to figure it out... I don't think we have a solution just yet.
I'm a developer outside of all of this (C# primarily these days, but have an extensive background in C/C++) -- and I've flashed phones to cricket with QPST -- so maybe I can help you guys out with this. If you're up for discussing any background that might catch me up to speed on this (already have my phone), would be up for trying to help break into it and enable this. Just send me a PM if you're up for this. Thank you!
Hey all,
I've only used this program for a little bit but I was able to change the values to what the OP suggested however, I used the Motorola Factory USB cable. I couldn't get the program to recognize my phone w/o it.
I'm using stock rooted ICS too.

So, you updated it with that -- were you successful and does GSM now work in the US?
Did anything change?
Phone doesn't make calls now
I followed the steps above
Radio Comm v11.12.2
Motorola drivers 2.2.28
Whatever data card drivers came with radiocomm
This did not allow me to see t-mobile or at&t here in the states.
So, random question/thought... If we find another modem with similar chip in another phone -- say on AT&T -- would we be able to read some of these fields and stuff out -- and then push it into our modem?
it would be great if we can set the phone to just swap SIM cards very easily, especially in the US

Hmm, might be an idea. I don't think that there were many AT&T phones with this capability though. My idea is to compare an XT910 vs an XT912, since that was a worldwide release.
Best idea, get an XT910, put your SIM into it, grab a full radio dump, then put your SIM into the XT912 that doesn't work and grab another full radio dump and compare the two.
You'd need an internation XT910, since AT&T didn't ship them down there, but that would be a great starting place...

Only thing is that I'd have to go out of my way to do that and spend even more money. I just dropped some on the Droid 4 for an off-contract phone. I wonder if there's any way we could ping some of the other forums, i.e. the Razr and see if anyone can potentially get us full-reads, so that way we could compare/diff them?
In addition -- I wonder if it's possible (probably a long-shot) to potentially order a SIM card or something from another carrier in Europe or somewhere outside the US and get it into the phone, but then have it "added" or "roaming" on a US network or something -- if that might provide a workaround?
Just trying to take stabs at it. I figure I'll hold onto the D4 for another month and see if we have any exciting developments -- and if not -- just push it to Swappa.
So i could use this to unlock the radio for overseas teleco use?

Not sure what you a proposing in your second paragraph. I have a UK SIM card, and when I plug it in two other phones (Samsung Renown, a CMDA/GSM basic phone) and a Motorola quad-band GSM phone, it works fine in the US. When I move the SIM into my Droid 4, no signal, although it sometimes gives the Unrecognized SIM message. So it's not a matter of non-US sims.

I get the unrecognized SIM message also. That doesn't affect the phone one bit though, since I just press okay to the message and the phone connects to my carrier. Is your carrier one with a Verizon roaming agreement?

[Q] Can't set APN, and other SIM problems

Hello,
I have problem with SIM card on my phone. I'm using Temasek's CM 10.1, Kowalski kernel, and V20I-EUR-XX baseband. When phone boots, I normally input my PIN, but it doesn't connect to network, I have to go to Mobile networks and Choose operator automatically, then it connects. I can call and send messages normally, but when the call hangs (me or the other side) it says SIM card error (something like that). Also I can't save APN. In APN settings there is nothing, and when I create APN manually, I input everything and press save, but it doesn't stay, APN's remain empty. I use micro-SIM with adapter, because my operator couldn't get me normal SIM at a time. I'm on Croatian provider VIP. Everything normally worked with micro-SIM from Tele-2 provider (although on CM 10, and CM 7, didn't test it on CM 10.1).
Is it related to my SIM card or SW (ROM or baseband)?

Not sure if you read my post, but I think we are having the same issue regarding the APN, etc.
Not been able to solve mine yet, perhaps together we can put out enough info that someone here can offer a solution? I haven't changed the baseband or kernel on their own, only went from stock 2.3.3, to CM10.1, then to CM7.2.
Are you able to remove the SIM PIN? If you remove the SIM PIN from security, are you able to save APN?
Does your phone access data with the native SIM card the phone was originally locked to?

It seems that PIN is already disabled in Settings-Security-SIM card lock settings :silly:
I called my old operator and they told me my phone was sold locked, and new operator told me they can't help because I didn't buy the phone from them. But then how it works now for calls and messages?
I don't have any other SIM with me so I can't test it with my phone. You say going back to CM7 didn't help? I guess I shouldn't try that then.
Maybe flashing stock ICS would? Any other suggestions?

I haven't tried stock ICS yet; maybe it would? I will try that tonight.
Mine shows the SIM PIN on, when I try to change it it asks for my old code, which I don't have of course, so I can't remove the security. Been hoping that someone else would have had experience or knowledge of what would cause the problem and have a solution or suggestion to try. The closest I came was on a different forum about a Sony Ericsson phone, but the rooting and flashing procedures are so much different I couldn't see a solution in it, though they suggested flashing the baseband iirc.
HMMMM, now that I read your reply, I can't say with 100% certainty that the phone was unlocked before I rooted and flashed CM10.1.....I had thought it was but perhaps it wasn't, and we are having a more similar issue than I thought. So the glitch, perhaps, is that it was not unlocked, the custom ROM somehow "half" unlocked it, and here we are stuck.
Okay, my only thought then is to take it back to stock everything, the most up to date I can find, then unlock it with code, and see if I can change the APN at that point. If so, I will root it, use My Back Up Root to save settings including APN (just in case so at least I can restore it that way if I can't do it manually, after)flash CM10.1 again or another fabulous custom ROM which is what I really wanted in the first place
I will try that tonight, and post you the results. Let me know if you have any (better) suggestions as well, I'm up to try almost anything at this point. Was hoping to upgrade to this for my daily phone as I'm limping along with a Acer Liquid MT that has seen better days
If anyone has a link to quickly point me towards the latest stock ROM etc. and wants to post here, I would be much obliged Might save this noob a few hours scratching his head to find what is most certainly in front of my nose already, but I digress...
Cheers
New baseband
I just flashed V30A baseband, and it didn't help. We can cross that from the list.
Well colour me confused...and happy?
I just today picked this project up again, about to attempt a different fix, again...*sigh.
Lo and behold, i insert my sim and power on the phone, and it asks me for network sim unlock.....odd because I'd used the phone with this sim before, through all my other testing, flashed different roms, etc. etc. In fact, I've used the phone on this very package, I know because there are sms messages on the phone from using it. Battery pull, remove sim and check, yup sure enough, old messages there. Hmmm...
Insert sim, reboot, asks for unlock code again. Well, what have I got to lose at this point right? As I said before, I THOUGHT I had unlocked the phone before starting this whole debacle, but wasn't 100% certain about it. Searched my email for the code since I always save them, couldn't find it. Well, in for a penny, in for a pound I suppose. Bought a new unlock code, waited for it to arrive. Input new unlock code, unlock successful!!
Reboot phone....waiting for service....(this seems like forever!!! In reality, less that 60 seconds.) Alas, I have service. And now, just to tempt fate, Apps->settings->wireless & networks->more->mobile networks->access point names..........:fingers-crossed:
I can hardly believe my eyes, there it be, Rogers Internet apn selected. It even auto-detected the damn thing!!
I can offer no further insight, I don't believe I physically did anything to arrive at this remedy. But there you go, for my part at least it's solved.
