Google Contacts search - Moto X Q&A

Does anyone have the nexus 5 Google contacts search apk that also searches web for local. I.e entering pizza in contacts would show result of local pizza restaurants that are not in your phone contacts. Need apk as my phone is not rooted.

I do
It works but force crashes every time you try to call the number...

FC on 442 no root.

Yekollu, thanks for link, installed but its the same as the old one. Still does not web search as part of the contact search. Looks like it a nexus only facility.

Found this to enable root is required and permission changes http://m.pocketnow.com/2013/12/26/install-google-dialer
Since I've no root can only hope that 4.4.3 update will sort ( that's if we get it).

Google Hangouts

As you guys may know, Google has integrated all their communication systems into the new Google Hangouts and it is started to rolling out.
Just wanted to let all root users know that you don't need to wait to get it as for some your Google Talk isn't being updated to Hangouts currently. Like if you have Talk currently and you go to the playstore and search hangouts it will say you already have it installed and you are updated to Hangouts even though you only have talk.
If you use something like Titanium Backup to uninstall Talk from your device, you can then go on to the playstore and be able to download and install the new Hangouts app.
I don't know if this has already been mentioned as I haven't seen a thread but just wanted to let people on to this little tip if you want to get it right away!
EDIT: I'm thinking now I might have probably posted this in the Themes and Apps forum, but I wasn't exactly sure if this should have been posted there as this is just a general tip. If any Mod wants to move this please do!

they pushed a new update out this morning that should have fixed this
Anyone get the 'couldn't sign in because couldn't reach google, try again' or whatever? I get it every time :-\

You don't need to uninstall Google talk... You can use the Web Google play to install hangouts and it will automatically replaces the old talk or obtain the apk file from the web and install it over the Google talk.

I agree. I really miss the who is online and who is offline thing. You can VAGUELY tell by the contacts picture being grayed out, but that sucks compared to a red dot. Hit the menu button in the hangout app and hit send feedback. Request for this feature to be put back in.
Had problem today

1.Use some app to take backup of Google Play Services (ES File Explorer can do it for you) and save the apk locally. This is recommended because after the next step you may not be able to connect and re-download the update over Mobile Data. It would work on WiFi however.
2.Go to Manage Apps > Google Play Services
3.Do "Uninstall" / "Uninstall Updates" for Google Play Services
4.Google Hangout will automatically ask you to Install or Update Google Play Services.
5. If you "Uninstalled Updates", then the app would update over Mobile Data when you click on update in Google Play. After this go to Step #8
6.If you "Uninstalled" the app completely, you wouldn't find it in Google Play. So install it from the backup created in Step #1.
7.Now go to Google Play and install any updates for Google Play Services.
8.Now open Google Hangout. It may still show you a connection issue for a couple for times.
9.Don't lose your heart. It should work after you try for a maximum of 1-2 times.
Google

I haven't been a huge fan of hangouts either yet. I use textra. I have heard that there might be some nice things in the works for it though. I'm keeping tabs on it.

[Q] Google Now not Working on KK

Hi I've tried searching but no answer found, although others have asked. Using Latest MacKay KK 4.1.1 and I am unable to use google now via swype from left. Voice search works. I think the issue is related to an issue I had on a 4.3 Rom where I had to uninstall updates from Google Search and then update via app but unable to do that on KK.
Any solutions?
you must log in in search settings with your Google Account.
then you can activate Google now with swype from left
this works only in the google launcher
As far as I can see I'm logged in. I'm using gel launcher but of I try to open the search app I get a network error. When I had this on 4.3 ROMs I could delete updated from search open search and then update. I'll check settings again and thanks for the reply

I've been researching this issue and it seems that it is also affecting some Nexus 5 users too, Google is apparently working on a fix. If I manage to get a solution I'll post it here
ok, i hope for you that google fix this, but i use Mackay 4.1.1 too and it works perfectly

It seems very hit and miss, some N5 users have the issue some don't it looks to be related to Google account settings
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dumz1opCfuE&feature=youtu.be Try this ROM. Google Now runs fine.
Found a fix of sorts; set up a new Google account on my phone in addition to my normal account and signed in to Google now using that. I read somewhere that there may be a problem with certain Google accounts causing this

Play Store Error

I have searched and called high and low all over Google and talked to reps. Can't seem to kick this Error Code 403. It is only the paid apps that won't download. Tried all sorts of methods of clearing cache to play store, Google services, Google framework, Uninstall updates, Factory resets, Removing accounts and re adding. Clearing cache in recovery. All with restarting before attempting a redownload on both WiFi and mobile networks. Please someone help. Out of the box it does this to me and it sucks.

Go back out and started up play store like normal. Cant remember if I got error first time, but okayed it and started it again. Then it loaded in and havent had issue since

Update the latest version of play store.
Did you have multiple Google accounts on your last phone? Make sure you are downloading the app with the same account that you originally made the purchase with. I had multiple accounts on my S3, then when I got my S5 I only put one of the accounts back on and was getting this error for a few apps even though GPlay said "purchased". You might also want to check that the date and time on the phone are correct.

You were absolutely correct. For some reason some of my purchased apps were showing on the wrong account under the all section. It went away after wiping and being careful which account I downloaded from. Thanks for the help guys.

Just use only one account in play store. don't do multiple.

OK google everywhere?

Is there a way for me to get OK google with the screen off or at least on any screen on this device ? I'm running a custom CM based ROM rooted so I Dont have moto voice so this would be nice if anyone can help
Sent from my XT1095 using XDA-Developers mobile app
The only way to replicate moto voice is through the app called OpenMic. It's not exactly the same but it gets close once it's been properly configured.

Google Maps 'feature'

Not sure if this is now new but before while driving with maps open and I say ok Google it would operate in the maps app with the search at the top but since I recently updated if I say ok Google now it doesn't stay in maps it opens the Google app and I have to say ok Google again really annoying. Is there a way to get it back. Thanks.
Can you check 'Ok Google detection' in Navigation Settings in Maps Settings once?
