OpenVPN installation - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear All
I would like to know if it could be possible to install OPENVPN client on WINDOWSPHONE. I find that it was possible for windows mobile version.
There is any specific limitation or only a very low interest on the matter?

Official support for VPN clients only *just* became available, with 8.1. I don't know of any OpenVPN client yet, though.
It may require some work. OpenVPN (for desktop Windows) targets an outdated version of the network driver interface spec. Desktop Windows supports that old interface (for backward compatibility) but I don't think Windows Phone does (I know Windows RT doesn't). The driver component of OpenVPN may need to be updated for the newer spec.

Remote Desktop

Hello everyone: I've just loaded the AT&T 6.1 Rom by NATF. It doesn't have the Remote Desktop software as the Dutty's Hybrid did. But I never got it to work anyways, because I didn't know how. Here are my questions:
1. Is there a cab for this software?
2. In order to make it work, do I need to have a server... or can I connect to my two home computers? I do have a "home network" where I can see the computers via the 2Wire router that I have.
If I can do this without downloading some web-reliant software (Go To My PC, Log Me In, etc.), that would be good.
Thanks for your help.
never been able to get this to work...
although i have used Remote desktop a few times i struggle to get this one working.. quite odd
Vista or XP
I no longer use XP. So no help from me there. Remote desktop works great on my vista from my htc tilt aka kaiser. You do have to forward port 3389 for the computer you want to access (unless your doing it locally, then you can access any computer) Also select under remote settings "Allow connections from from computers running any version of Remote Desktop" That should do the trick. If you google it you'll find it here.
And here is the latest cab file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2437139&postcount=5
i use rdesktop all the time on my kaiser, over a vpn connection to a server to support people on the move. Works a treat. Although im always a VNC fan
yeah realvnc + realvnc for windows mobile works the best!

Cisco Anyconnect Client

If anyone is interested Cisco has a new Anyconnect client for Windows Mobile 6.1. I'm not sure which devices are supported but the AT&T Tilt with WM6.1 is. I'm having a few DNS and IE issues but so far everything else I tried works including Remote Desktop. The client software is anyconnect-wince-ARMv4I-2.3.0185-k9.cab. A new Cisco Secure Desktop (for the ASA) is also available but I don't know if it is required.
can you please upload the cab
reading the release notes...
this is only supported on the cisco asa 5500 platform and looks like you need the windows mobile license on the cisco asa.
excerpts:
The AnyConnect client for Windows Mobile requires that a security appliance mobile license be installed. If the correct license is not installed, end user receives an error message.
The AnyConnect client Release 2.3 focuses on providing an improved user experience.
This release includes the following new features:
• Support for Windows Mobile OS touch-screen devices connecting to Cisco Series 5500 Adaptive Security Appliances.
Note Windows Mobile requires a special license and must have ASA Release 8.0.3 or higher running on the security appliance.
Though AnyConnect 2.3 has been designed to be compatible with Windows Mobile 6.1, 6.0 and 5.0 Professional and Classic, Cisco has specifically qualified only the devices listed in Table 1 to ensure interoperability. While other devices might work, Cisco is cannot guarantee compatibility with other
devices.
Windows Mobile Pocket PC Standard Edition (any version) is not supported.
HTC devices are supported only with Touchflo disabled.
Check with your service provider regarding your data plan before using AnyConnect for Windows
Mobile, as you might incur additional charges if you exceed the data usage limits of your plan.

I have been using the integrated L2TP/IPSec VPN client in Windows Mobile 5/6 (as well as integrated VPN Client in Windows 2000/XP/2003 & Vista) to connect to Cisco PIX 6.3 & recently 7.x Firewalls without any issues - there is no real need to use any 3rd party client. PIX 6.3 was a bit of a pig to get set up initially but once the settings were done it was easy to copy them. PIX 7.x includes a Wizard in the GUI that sets it all up for you....
I am not sure what benefits you would get from the Cisco Windows Mobile VPN client? Plus it costs you more for an additional license.............
Andy
I don't think Cisco released the cost for licensing of the Mobile client. I was on the beta program and it works well. One of the benefits for using this client is that the connection is made over SSL instead of IPSEC/L2TP/PPTP.
If this is what I think it is, I would love this. My schools network requires us to login through some cisco authentication program we have to download, and I cannot get on the wifi with my tilt because of this.

Windows 7 RTM on HTC Shift?

Do any one tried windows 7 RTM on HTC Shift?
How you installed it and do all the drivers of windows vista work on Shift and do Shift perform faster in windows 7 instead of windows vista?
Thank you.
It works
It won't be much different from W7 RC, so you can install it and follow the guidelines on this forum for RC, RTM will behave the same.
It will be faster than vista, less memory consuming , and better suited
for mobile touch screens like our SHift.
Just do it
I do mention that it still have the specific Windows 7 on HTC Shift problems, as BSOD when AERO 1024x600, fullscreen Windows Media Center and all other problems. Control Center works well, touchscreen as well and all other chipsets.
PS: the sucks is however the "can't portrait, just landscape". No 3d party programs are working to change to portrait view...
I installed Windows 7 RTM without any problem and the BSOD in 1024x600 is solved disabling the Aero. (Using the Windows 7 Basic theme).
Nando
that's a work around

That's actually a workaround, we all want aero to work in 1024x
Let's hope some smart person writes something to help us out.
I have installed Windows 7 RTM on the Shift successfully.
After the installation of the drivers, i can't make WiFi and TouchScreen to work.
TouchScreen - i don't have DPinst.exe in the directory for EC Driver (as stated in the PDF file).
WiFi - i install the drivers, do a reset but still it doesnt recognize the WiFi adapter.
How did u manage to install them ?

Did you remember to turn on the Wifi and Bluetooth on the Vista side before installing Windows7?
The only problem is the touchscreen isn't working for me
Fresh install
For me everything is working, like the default shift install during the unpacking of the product. After Win7, most of the system is working already, only network (Lan and Wireless), Touchscreen, and the Shift control center needs installation. I have installed all the drivers (downloaded from the HTC site) that were still needed, as "administrator, and in compatibility mode for windows vista sp2. ( right click on the setup | properties | checkmark the option to run as administrator, and check the correct compatibility mode. Or use vista, or windows xp) First thing to install is the "Vista EC Driver ", after that the USB LAN driver. Than run the automatic update until you have installed all the windows 7 updates. You notice that the screen drivers are updated to the latest version. Than its time to install the rest of the drivers still needed: Touchscreen and the Marvall Wifi. (in compatibility mode installed...) The Control button on the shift is not working, but the Shift control program can be started via the programs button of windows 7, and all the options to start wireless and bleutooth are working.
My advise: Upgrade as soon as possible: Default Installation of WinVista gave me 720 MB memory in use after a fresh restart, the Windows7 uses 510 MB... so major performance boost !
Have fun,
Manus

[Q] [REQ] MobileIron client

At work, we now have to use MobileIron to access our company's Exchange server.
Unfortunately, there is no support yet for WP7.
There is a WP 6.x MobileIron client, which is installed with a cab file.
I was wondering if somehow this could be ported to WP7?

I've noticed they have a lumia in the background on their site, so I'm assuming support is going to come out fairly soon. Actually seems to be support for it.

Firstly this is Windows 8 not windows phone 8.
But in answer to your question. There is no way to update a windows phone 7 device to windows phone 8. Windows phone 8 apps physically cannot run on windows phone 7 as it lacks the APIs to do so. Most developers right now still make apps for windows phone 7 because they can run on both 7 and 8.
If you want windows phone 8 and windows phone 8 apps, get a windows phone 8 handset.
As for upgrading WP7 device to WP8, it's technically not impossible - the hardware can run it (though poorly) - but the WP8 OS was designed to require hardware features not present on WP7 handsets. Consequently, there are no WP7 devices which receive an official update to WP8.

The biggest limitation for an update is a complete kernel swap. WP7 used the windows CE kernel. WP8 uses the windows NT kernel. For all intents and purposes this makes them entirely different operating systems and the technical difficulty of issuing an update for WP7 to 8 would be like releasing an update to the iPhone that installs android or an update to windows 8 which installs OSX.
Its only because WP7 apps are in .NET and it was possible to port .NET to WP8 that WP7 apps do run on WP8. Other than that the only relationships between the 2 platforms are name, general design style and the fact that they are made by the same company.
But otherwise. WP8 could feasibly run on WP7 handsets. Its just it wouldn't be possible to do the same way as regular software updates. Plus most WP7 devices are actually pretty low spec, they were all single core hitting clock speeds of 1.4ghz max, half gb of ram usually. Not beasts of handsets at all.
What do you mean by "regular updates"? Each Windows Phone update required the phone switching to a special "Update OS" boot mode where the "ROM" of the main OS could be modified, and at that point switching out the kernel (and associated userspace libraries) is no harder than, for example, switching out IE7 for IE9 (which the Mango update to WP7 did). Yeah, it's not really the same OS afterward, but so what? The data is still there.
Admittedly, WP7 makes substantial use of Windows Embedded Database and CE Database files, which are accessed through APIs that are CE-specific extensions to the standard Win32 API. Those would either need to be ported to the Win32/NT API, or the data in them would need to be converted to another format during the update... or the phone's configuration would need to be wiped and set up with defaults again, which would kind of suck but still be better than "no WP8 for you; go buy new hardware!"
Anyhow, this whole thread is in the wrong forum. Could somebody do something about that?
