[Q] Can't get past bootloader and can't transfer new files - Moto X Q&A

X1053, rooted and unlocked bootloader on T Mob US
Tried to install a new kernel but it failed. Wiped cached (factory reset in twrp) and now it won't boot past the animation logo.
As its not booted into the OS, windows won't recognize it as a device so i can't install a new rom to try again. Windows 8 'bings' when I connect it but it won't load as a drive.
I CAN get into AP Fashboot Flash Mode If I then go to Recovery, it still takes me to twrp. But there are not zip files to install that work and I can't work out how to copy them over without windows recognizing the device?
Thanks in advance

You'll maybe need to flash the same stock firmware version you're on now...4.4 or 4.4.2 or whatever version you were on. Then root again.
This will help you...

Thanks for the reply. the problem is I can't connect to the phone to transfer a new firmware on. It 'bings' on USB plug but won't open as a USB drive. I can't get the phone to boot, can only get it to recovery. i tried reinstalling the motorola drivers again but still no luck.
When it was running Ok, I could plug it in (when it used to load into the android OS OK) and it would appear as a USB drive in Windows 8. I also tried on a different laptop.

When you boot into bootloader, does the phone itself recognize that it is connected via USB? If so, you have to obtain the current SBF of your phone and flash over the files via fastboot.exe and mfastboot.exe.
There are plenty of guides throughout this site. Take your time and read everything before you make your first move.

OK panic nearly over! I managed to get it flashed using RDS lite. 4.4 is back on now, although I lost my root Not sure I want to go down the whole downgrade to 4.2.2 etc but I'll see. Thanks again

Just adding a reply in case anyone has a similar issue.
RSDLite managed to get the firmware back on. It lost root, but what actually happened is the recovery got deleted / corrupted.
So i went back through the rooting guide which started by adding twrp and then flashing. Rebooted, and SuperSU tells me all is OK and root is there.

Is your phone recognized by fastboot or adb?
Since your bootloader is unlocked, manually flash the 4.4.2 firmware files, then TWRP, then boot into recovery, use adb to push SuperSU or whichever root program you prefer to /sdcard, then use TWRP to flash it.

[Q] Fire HD with only TWRP installed

Hi all, I've been searching online and I haven't found anything that helps or even directly applies, so I broke down and decided to ask for help.
I was working off the guide to root my kindle, install TWRP and then a ROM, first time doing this.
SO let me break down where I'm at:
-rooted
-TWRP installed
-there's no .zip that I can find to stall from (checked sdcard folder and all others)
-can't load into original OS, logo goes from orange to blue on its own, and hangs there
-when plugged into PC, it is recognized but says no drivers are installed for it (no matter how many times i try reinstalling it.)
- I can get it into fastboot mode, but can't seem to load anything (I've read that fastboot doesn't work with twrp)
- adb sideload doesn't seem to work, it cannot find device
So how can I get a .zip file loaded to twrp, or restore the device, without adb seeing the device?
Is there a specific way to install the drives, or a way to get the .zip loaded through fastboot that I'm not aware of?
I'm sorry if this has been addressed before, I haven't seen this exact issue, and the fixes that seem close haven't worked :
thanks guys!

Without a working ADB connection, you can't get a file to your device in TWRP. You can restore your system, recovery, and boot images with fastboot, but your device must be in fastboot mode first. If you decide to do that, you'll have to restore your stock system, recovery and boot images, saved from the 2nd bootloader install instructions, then start the whole process all over again.

Cheers! Excellent advise! I got it restored to stock!
I used the img files from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951254
and followed the fastboot directions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277105
now try it again! (and hopefully succeed!)

[Q] [REQUEST] System.img!

So what I would like for someone to help me with is to get the system.img for the first somehow on my the computer so i can flash it via ADB-Fastboot and get my phone to at least power up to the homescreen; this is because just a few days ago i was testing out some 'things' though they didn't work and decided to wipe the phone. The problem is that I erased EVERYTHING on the phone including system, etc. So now because the first doesn't have an sd card slot I cannot get a way to mount a rom and flash a new system.
All i ask for is a system.img or any tutorial that would work, (I've literally spent 2 nights looking for something but they aren't compatible with the first) using the RUU is out of the question because it's apparently encrypted and won't detect my phone since it just hangs on the facebook logo, also the system dumps on the forum that I've seen don't contain the system.img file. Thank you in advance for your help and troubles!
(note that I do not have a way to access ubuntu or any linux computer right now because of various reasons, what i do have is a spare first!)
What's stopping you from flashing a ROM from recovery? ADB push the ROM file into /sdcard from recovery.
The most common fix to get RUU working is to relock your bootloader. You can run RUU from fastboot.

Well recovery works perfectly but there is no rom or file in the sd card at all because of the total system wipe, and ADB doesn't seem to detect my phone since it requires USB debbuging (or am i wrong?) and usb debugging isn't accessible since it hangs on the facebook logo. Only when it's in fastboot does it get recognized; but im not aware of a way to push the rom files through fastboot? I would very appreciate a tutorial if there is! that's why im looking for a system.img that i can flash using fastboot.
And as for the RUU I can't get to the Fastboot screen on the program because it first needs to confirm my phone model and system which it can't because it requires USB Debugging to be turned on on the phone. Also would relocking the bootloader still be necessary even though I have S-off?
About doing the ADB push through recovery to sd card, I don't see any option like that on the menu. I have CWM would I need TWRP for that?
USB debugging is only needed in the OS. In recovery you can do a lot of things even without root. ADB just has trouble detecting a device that's gone through a firmware change, just type "adb kill-server" and try again. You don't need to mount anything to push to /sdcard.
Do RUU as a last resort, since getting S-off again after relocking the bootloader is an elaborate process. But don't worry about the warnings. RUU will work when your phone is in fastboot, the first thing it does is reboot your phone anyway.
Does this help?

Help rescuing my M7 :(

Hey guys,
I think I might have bricked my phone. I've installed yesterday a new firmware (device is s off, rooted). Version 6.09.401.5. So far so good. Downloaded a new ROM. Wiped everything including sdcard in twrp, then tried to push the rom to the sdcard. Also worked. But, I can't install it. Tried 100 different recoveries. It keeps me saying that it can't mount /system. Tried another firmware, but this time it failed (don't know why, it hang on the RUU screen, and windows didn't detect my m7 anymore). So i tried to boot in the bootloader (I think the firmware update failed..) I get the normal bootloader screen, but now fastboot isn't working anymore. My phone get's recognized by adb in recovery, but nothing other than that. i tried to install another rom again, but this time it sais that /cache /system etc. are unmountable. What have I done? Can someone help me or did I just brick the device?
Yeah, this means I can't get by no means inside the RUU environment, so I can't flash a new firmware. The phone doesnt get recogdnized by Windows in the bootloader, however the bootloader screen is normal. So can't use fastboot.
Okay, little update guys. Picked up a Windows 8 machine (mine was running on 8.1) So fastboot works. Tried to flash firmware, but now it sais remote: not allowed. Any idea's? Tried 2 different firmware packages.
Alright! Got it fixed. Here's the solution:
Thanks to Windows 8.0, not 8.1, i was able to flash a firmware, so that windows recognized the phone again. Then, picked up a flashable firmware zip (~1GB) and flashed it via the standard procedure. I think that that repartitioned the whole device, so that the original rom could be installed via the firmware.
My phone is rescued again, thanks xda!

Did you just have a 6 post conversation with yourself and change your name on the 7th post ?
Most people here know about windows 8.1 and fastboot
a little reading would have saved you a lot of stress

[Q] Updated Firmware and lost root and recovery

I need some help...I updated my firmware and I must of updated with the wrong firmware...did they one with stock recovery or something. Now my phone doesn't have a custom recovery and I do not have root. I tried to download the trwp tool and flash but it says I do not have root. Also when I try to adb connect to my phone it doesn't recognise that the device is there. I am running Insert Coin 4.4.4 version 5.03. Any help is much appreciated! Also I should mention the firmware was from Captain Throwbacks thread with the latest. I am also Soff.
Very strange @Captain_Throwback's firmware should not have stock recovery included.
You can fastboot flash twrp.
ADB = OS/Recovery
Fastboot = Bootloader
My computer won't even recognize my phone now so I can't flash anything through fastboot. The command prompt says waiting for device

Unplug phone
Uninstall everything HTC and reboot PC
Install these drivers
Plug phone in (drivers should install)
If not try this:
On your PC go to device manager and find your phone, right click and select properties
Select the driver tab
Select update driver
Select browse my comp
Let me pick
Look for ADB USB device or similar should be one of the first couple choices
Select MyHTC install and you should be good
Thanks that worked...flashed the recovery successful but wont let me go into it. I think its because I am not rooted. Do I just use the all in one tool to get root back?

If it flashed successfully you should be able to get into recovery.
Are you sure you flashed the correct version? There are several for the M8.
I ended up flashing another version and I got into recovery. Root Checker still says I dont have root so I am going to wipe and reflash my rom. Hopefully that will do it. Not sure what happened but I really appreciate the help with getting the drivers corrected so I could communicate with my device again. With out adb I didnt know what I was going to do.

Cannot connect to fastboot through ADB

Hi guys. I've had my HTC one for a while now and it had TWRP flashed on it. About a week ago I flashed the android revolution rom, worked well but my camera went really weird if I looked back at some recordings. So I wanted to revert back to stock everything. I flashed a stock recovery for the M7, after that I had the problem of not being able to connect my device to the computer when I fastboot mode. Simply wouldn't pick it up when I typed ADB devices in cmd. My device wouldn't show up after installing stock recovery. And it doesn't want to restore any roms either in stock recovery mode. I can't even access my folders in that mode to flash any roms. I click either apply from sd card, apply from phone storage. Says for a split second check CID failed or something and reboots itself.
I cannot flash TWRP back cause my computer since it can't pick it up. I've tried everything. Changing USB ports, uninstalling my drives for htc. Changing computers, unlocking, relocking bootloader. No result. I'm screwed cause I'm stuck on this android revolution rom, rooted. Just wanna flash custom recovery. I can connect it to my computer, access folders and add things to it but soon as I turn it off and go into fastboot mode it says fastboot usb and can hear the noise when its connected but it doesn't show up in adb devices and when I flash the TWRP it starts send then comes up with FAILED. Help please, would be appreciated!

Adb only works if you'te booted to OS or custom recovery. Command you're looking for in bootloader menu is "fastboot devices"
Fala Puno. Ja sam raditi sada. I'm of Croatian decent in Australia. I'll try this later when I return home
Fixed it! I'm an idiot, I didn't realise I was flashing the m8 twrp instead of m7. That's why it failed. Lol. Anyway thanks
