[Q] Correct procedure for updating nightlies on tate? - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have kitkat on my Kindle fire HD 7" (tate) but it's an old build from january and I would like to update it to a newer build. What is the correct way of doing that, so I don't lose any programs or information I have stored on my Kindle already? Also I saw that there were now unofficial builds from cyanogenmods site. Should I use those instead of Hashcodes builds?

The unofficial builds are the ones built before the Tate became official device. The official ones will be the newer ones and the one you want to use should you want to run nightlies.
I use Titanium Backup to back up my apps and data. The free one is good and will work fine but the donate version is better. Backup only user apps and data unless you have a specific purpose and know the problems that could occur.
You want to download the ROM and Gapps onto your internal SD card, boot into TWRP and verify the downloads are there. Now run a full backup. Then "Swipe" to factory reset and flash the ROM and Gapps. Now wipe cache and dalvic and boot into system.
Profit.
Edit: You alway want to verify the checksum as well to make sure the download is complete and uncorrupted.

Flashing cm9 nightlies

I am running cm9 a2 on my touch pad and would like to know how I would go about flashing the latest nightly which now include everything in alpha 2. I gather you can't flash from from rom manager. Also where do I get the latest nightlies? Any help would be appreciated.

Do a search in the dev forum for 'nightlies'. In the thread you'll find the download link, I think it's 'terrachata'. Install the file with cwm. (install zip > choose zip from sdcard). Do a wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache beforehand . If coming from cm9 alpha 2, no need to wipe/delete data, factory reset.

Absolutely no need to wipe anything.
I've flashed each nightly "over the top" of the previous version without any problem.
You can use Rom Manager to flash. Just tell it to use the existing version of CWM when it asks and check the version you have manually installed either 2 or 3 and away you go.
Then you can install all zip updates and mods the same way.
Check out buildprop-supreme-rohan-v1.1 for some cool tweaks including 120dpi screen settings.

With any android system, you should ALWAYS wipe at least cache and dalvik after flashing a rom update. It only takes 5 seconds, and can help you avoid big issues.
You can use Rom Manager to flash.

DON'T use Rom Manager to flash roms, it's just a bad idea. Many devices have been bricked because of that app. Just boot into recovery, install the zip, and wipe cache and dalvik. It only takes an extra 30 seconds to do it through recovery, and will make it so you don't have any issues.

Thanks for all the great advice! It would be nice to have a thread about the stability of the latest nightlies before you do a flash. How do you do a nandroid backup before an update? Does it take a lot of space? How do you do a restore if all doesn't go well?

Boot into recovery, and before doing anything else, go to Backup and Restore, then hit Backup. Backups will probably take about 600mb or so, more if you have a lot of apps on there. You only need to keep one backup on the device, and you can copy the backup off the memory onto a computer if you want to save space.

The same way you would flash a rom. Boot into recovery, wipe data/cache/dalvik, then go to backup and restore, and hit restore.
I hate being a NOOB about this...I know there is a changelog that you can find here: http://review.cyanogenmod.com/#q,status:merged+branch:ics,n,z
My question is does anyone know where I can find a less complex or more simple explanation (for us noobs that doesn't understand computerish sometimes! ) of what changes they have made to the nightlies?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Sorry again for the very noob question!

The nightlies are basically compiled each night from the cm9 source. Its an automated process so the changes are what was changed in the cm source in the last 24 hours. Usually its nothing major, if its something big you'll probably see an alpha posted on rootzwiki.

I'm interested in moving my backup from my touchpad to my computer to save space, however, my "backups" folder is empty...
As I'm writing this I'm realizing that I may have preformed a backup before doing a factory settings/data reset/wipe so would that be erased when I did the wipe/reset?
I know now that if coming from another version of CM9 their is no need to wipe the factory data/settings, instead just wipe the other two (forget what their called)
Should be in a folder called ClockworkMod
After updating nightlies
What should I expect to have to re install?
gapps?
dpi fix?
any launcher settings?
what typically breaks/resets and has to be re-configured?
DPI fix is all.
Any changes you make to your build.prop file will be erased on an update from one nightly to the next (or CM9 to another nightly). Anything else - apps, gapps, settings, etc), should not change.
Personally, I've become used to the 160DPI default, which works quite nicely on the latest nightly. Yes, there isn't as much screen space, but I don't mind. I don't have THAT many things I need on the screen at once - one widget, half a dozen or so app shortcuts, that's about it for my main home screen. So 160 works pretty well, especially for office docs and kindle reading.
160 v 120, what do they actually look like when compared? I know that running 160 has the portrait app grid view off kilter (landscape looks fine)
120 I find ends up with a row and at least one column off of the screen, so you can't use them. 160 doesn't have that issue unless you go portrait.

[i605] Nightly has no voice/data

Hi. Just noticed that nightly builds for i605 (Galaxy Note 2 on Verizon) were available. Downloaded and installed them using both TWRP 2.6.3.1 and CWM 6.0.4.3. In both cases, the rom installed okay, but I didn't have voice or data. This happened with both the nightly from 12/19/13 and the nightly from 12/17/13. I did a clean install (factory reset, wipe system, wipe data) before flashing the omni nightly. Anyone else experiencing this?

I too experienced the same thing. Hoping it gets worked out soon.
Try installing SELinuxModeChanger from the play store and set it to Permissive. Thats what I had to do to get data back after the 12/20 OTA on my Galaxy Note 2. Tried both TWRP and CWM before that.
Thanks for the suggestion. Just installed the 12/19 nightly via twrp 2.6.3.1. First thing after it booted was to download SELinuxModeChange app and set to permissive. Then rebooted but still no voice or data.

hmmm... maybe try PhilzTouch CWM, it's a non-standard CWM. IF you do you can flash the nighties from the OpenDelta folder, system update will drop you into recovery and it'll error the update but you can install manually.
I'm also interested in a fix for this..I played around with the rom for a few hours on wifi before realizing that there was no cell connection.
I have philz installed, so maybe I will take a look through its settings and also try the app suggested. Is it possible that maybe its an APN issue?
EDIT:
..I did find that the zips to add multiwindow support do work on the nightly though!
I just tried again... Seems that it is not recognizing the Sim is installed, and also shows no baseband. I'm on the latest, MJ9. IIRC

I tried updating apn conf, as well as a buch of related apks, all pulled from slim's 4.2.s which works pretty well (gps is slow, but cell/data work normally). Nothing I tried helped...

Rick is looking into it. The nightlies were pulled due to this bug.
Same issue on nightly 02012014
I installed the nightly and my voice/data is not working anymore, installed the 4.1 modem again without any luck...
did anyone have this issue?
I thought I was the only one having this problem
No Sim recognized. No cell, data.
I decided against omni until the bugs get worked out.
Reinstalled CleanRom ACE. Everything is now good to go. Its almost like I have a fully functional phone again. (Almost like having an iPhone).

Amazon App Store force closing in CM11

So far, I'm enjoying the latest build of CM11. I do have one problem, though. Whenever I try to launch the Amazon App Store, it force closes instantly. It worked fine in 10.2. I have tried fresh installs, Titanium Backup restoration, and multiple data and cache wipes. I have also tried it in dalvik and ART.
The regular Amazon app opens just fine.
Anyone got any ideas what's up and how to fix it?

I use amazon app store (the android app store from amazon) everyday and no problem that I can remember. So it does work fine in cm11.
Your using a fresh copy downloaded from amazon itself? Not some hacked one [or old one]. You sound like you know what your doing after-all.
Make sure your on the latest cm11 nightly as well.
After that, don't know. I don't know how to replicate it on my device.
Maybe, another app or setting is messing with it but I can't think of any to cause that problem. I use the privacy settings for instance and no issues.
Clean install, fresh download (to avoid any weirdness from backed up copy). Oh well. Maybe I'll go back to reinstalling everything from a completely clean wipe one app at a time.
Oh well. Worst case scenario is that I download and install on my S3, then Dropbox the FAotD apk so I can put it on the tablet.

If your talking about titanium backup. Believe I restored all my apps from 10.2 onto cm11 with it - don't remember installing amazon fresh and new - though I can't remember anymore. I'm not in the titanium backup causes problems with older app backups crowd. Obviously, it may somewhere far enough down the line and that's of little concern to me especially when one can just:
I would backup the rom fully in recovery, wipe, flash new cm11 and cm11 compatible gapps. Then reboot and install only amazon app store and see if it FCs then. That should be possible if I'm not missing something. Minimum possible. Try also via titanium but first try clean app install of only amazon and get that out of the way.
Make as few setting changes as possible too.
If it doesn't work then... wow (hardware issue?)
I got it working. When I updated to the 3/28 nightly, I formatted system twice. I think I was lazy and used the standard wipe in TWRP before. I got it all fixed up and rocking again.
Thanks for helping me remember not to be lazy.

Yes, doing a Factory Reset. Also have tried clearing and not clearing cache, neither seemed to have any effect.
Thanks for your attention. It looks like I've found a build that works. cm-11-20140804-SNAPSHOT-M9-ovation.zip installed and booted rather quickly. None of the other nightly or official/unofficial builds seem to have worked, but I'm up and running now.

Help
Ok so I managed to install cm-11-20140706-UNOFFICIAL-bok-ovation. Installation ran smoothly and everything was fine (kitkat running ok and I was able to go into main menu etc.), until I powered off the device. I remembered the display sort of paused for a brief moment and the device powered down. As I turned it back on, it boots back to the original factory rom.
I've lost my back up rom and cynoboot now only allow selection of either no.1 (boot from Stock ROM), or no. 4 (boot CWM recovery).
I have tried installing the newer ROM (cm-11-20140804-UNOFFICIAL-bok-ovation) but it says E: Can't Open /emmc /cm-11-20140804-UNOFFICIAL-bok-ovation.zip (bad) -tried downloading the file again with same result..
Out of desperation I tried all the menu functions from wiping and formatting to hard resetting it, but nothing happens. It can still boot to Stock ROM fine though. Any help to get this thing rooted with kitkat running is much appreciated..
Patience is the key ...

Patience. No, I'm not good at it either, but combined with the slower operations on the bootable microSD card, I had to wait about 15-20 minutes for the revolving arrow to stop. Touch the screen occasionally, so that the processor stays up to speed (I shouldn't think that necessary, but it stopped revolving when I touched the screen after about 20 minutes).
Noob Questions
I realize these questions will likely seem obvious to everyone, but I couldn't find an answer looking through the forum, so I figured I would ask before proceeding to try this;
The instructions say to download the SD Card Image - I see the links under "SD Card Images", but I also see similar looking links under "Cyanoboot Sources"
Example: SD Card Images: HD: sdcard-hummingbird-cm11.0-v1.img
Cyanoboot Sources: HD: u-boot-hummingbird-cm11.tgz
My question is are these the same thing? Do I need both? One or the other?
Maybe some helpful info: I have a Stock Nook HD 8gb running 2.2.0, never done anything to it other than the factory updates.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the great posts
I want to thank everyone for the outstanding work here that allowed a complete noob to take my stale 2 year old Nook HD from blah to WOW in a few simple steps.
I really worried about getting a good SD card, but I was able to exFat format an ADATA 64GB Class 10 card which then tested to 1.62 MB/s on Random Write 4KB (QD=32) on CrystalDiskMark (5 iterations, 50MB). Already owned it as I actually purchased it for the nook, but it seemed like it would not store on the external card.
I followed the instructions exactly as posted on page 1 of this thread and I have the following results: (All confirmed with Screenshots I hope will post)
Total space: 57.12GB! (dramatic improvement over factory Nook HD)
Up time: 18+ hours and going strong with NO forced restarts
Android Version: 4.4.4!

Hello,
I have the August update installed for the cm11 sd install on the hd+. Simple question:
What's the procedure to install the updated Rom(11/23)? Do I just boot to recovery and
flash the Rom? Or do I have to do some other things ( wipe? and/or flash gapps?).
Thanks

There are no instructions for SD card install in verygreenÅ› thread, but I think you can follow the same procedure detailed in cm10.x sdcard instrucutions.
I did a CM11 install that is in leapinliar's post, was pretty easy to do.
If I wanted to update to CM12.1 or put twrp on what would I need to do?

I think leapilar listed almost everything useful to nook hd(+) in his signature.
IIRC, I took these steps to have both recovery and rom in my ovation emmc:
1) create a micro SD card with a recovery (you probably did it already when flashed cm11)
2) Download a newer (cm12 compatible) recovery and copy to sdcard (I'm using emmc twrp 2.8.6.0 built by amaces but there are older builds compatible, including cwm)
3) flash recovery (it'll replace nook stock recovery with the one you're flashing. People says it may be more difficult to fix your nook in case you experience emmc issues. I've never had any issues so I can't tell)
4) reboot to newer recovery, wipe /data, /cache, /dalvik-cache and /system, then flash cm12.1 rom with cm12.1 gapps (cm12 gapps won't work in cm12.1 and vice versa)
PS: I'm afraid .img files aren't flashable via recovery. To flash 2.8.6.0 I used Flashify. You can get it in play store and use it if you are rooted. This will make the process a lot easier since you won't need to prepare an sdcard.
