[Q][SOLVED][HELP] /system, /data not mounting - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I have an i9000 (Obvious) which, I put in the freezer (please don't ask me why). So, the problem is I had put it at a Live OC of 120% and opened antutu benchmark and put it in the freezer. I know that my phone hangs if I open some heavy apps at 120%. So, that is what happened with the phone while benchmarking. So I had to force shutdown and when I turned it on, it first showed me the error of "Process System is not responding". I clicked on wait. Well, the Status Bar wouldn't turn on and I assumed that the System UI was retarded at the moment. So I factory reset and flashed ROMs multiple times. BUT, I lost access to /data and /system. So I tried restoring, and it did Restore but didn't work, same stuff happened.
So, Ultimately I flashed Stock ROM and tried flashing another ROM again but no. No access to /data or /system. I did this multiple times until I realised I have access to /system and /data and am able to mount them via the CF-ROOT Kernel and that the Stock ROM works fine. Please help!
EDIT: I just forgot to format /system and /data before switching from GB to KK

Nexus One Rom/Memory Issues

Hey guys, I have a memory issue with my Nexus One when it comes to available storage space. The rom available memory seems to get lower and lower everytime I flash a rom than the previous time. When I load roms like CM6 or Kang-o-Rang or MicroMod Supercircle 2.7 or any others I have 4-16 MB available and nothing has installed yet. I usually use A2SD EXT3 for these but now its extremely difficult to do anything when booting with so little space to begin with. A week ago, on most roms I have well around 150 MB free before installing anything. What may have caused this issue? I even tried booting CM6 with a different SD card not partitioned for A2SD and wiping everything and same result and now I really can't install anything. So is my phone faulty or is there something I can do? I am currently running recovery Amon RA 1.7.0.1 and issues seemed to have come up since using this recovery. I was using Clockwork Mod latest one before this a few days ago.
Any ideas?
Have you been wiping data + cache each time you flash?
Make sure you're calculating data space and not system space (which can be as low as it gets to be, it doesn't matter).

I have wiped, cleared cache, delvik many many times. I suspect that the wipe is not working properly. I have tried two different recoveries and nothing works. My available space now running on Nexus FRF91 stock with root only I have 53.64 MB free. I have installed no third party apps yet whatsoever. I have not even logged in to google yet because it will download all my apps again. I have rebooted as well. I think theres an issue with my device and memory. Should I call HTC or my warranty is void?
Sounds like a weird problem, I would've tried to wipe a time or two more. I just wiped my device after flashing nightlies for the last two months without wiping and I noticed I had 170MB free when I booted up with a few apps installed.
I agree with SBS_. It sounds like the wipe isn't doing the job properly. Try to do it in all the possible ways (wiping through the ROM - using "Factory Reset" option, wiping through recovery - clearing data, cache and Dalvik-cache, and wiping through ADB command line), see if it changes anything.

I've tried everything except ADB command line. I will have to read into doing that as I am unsure what to do. I have wiped from recovery and through the rom at least 15 times each! lol
When you load a new ROM, did you try to use Root Explorer to see what's on your DATA partition? (under directory /data).

Great idea. Actually I have but not sure what suspicious files I should be looking to delete. I do own root explorer so any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

I have this exact issue. I know how to wipe. I have gone as far as reloading HBoot and placing the stock EPF30 image. I have gone thru using clockwork and Amon. I know how to do factory resets. I know how to go to storage options with clockwork and format all partition options. I have spent months on this. Below is a readout, after blowing away everything.
~ # du -hc /data
du -hc /data
2.0K /data/lost+found
4.0K /data

Another user that I have been working with has the exact issues as the user here and me. He contacted HTC. They are replacing his N1. There is something weird going on with some of these units. Just like a few months back, no one knew anything about the bad boot blocks issue causing many developers to change their ROM installs to accommodate those users with this issue. This low space on /data issue is another one that sooner or later will start to show up more and more, IMHO. For instance, at best using either Evils Sense Roms or MicroMods Hybrid sense Roms, I have 23MB free on initial install. This is after basically wiping formatting, resettings factory Data etc etc. At best, lets say using Enoms latest AOSP, I have maybe 75Mb free Internal memory, after initial install and NO applications downloaded installed on my part.
I really wish that folks here and on other threads would start to take this issue a little more seriously than basically saying a user isn't properly wiping his setup prior to an install. I have my beloved N1 since third week of January this year. Never had a problem with rooting, installing any of the original CM, or Paul M stuff from the early days here and on their Kitchen setups. Something has basically changed to cause these issues on a number of Nexus one setups. I have root explorer too and no manner of deleteing, via changing partition permissions from RO to RW makes any difference after wiping, formatting whatever prior to a fresh clean install of any current ROM.
I have approximately the same issue. I can't install anything..
Even after a full wipe of /data and all caches, I installed latest nightly-219-passion and the only possible way to install apps is by manually typing the adb push commands in commandline. It DOES NOT WORK using Market, File Manager, Titaniumbackup, ....
When I nandroid restore I have all my apps back but still CANNOT install any new apps using Market, File Manager, Titaniumbackup, ....
I already tried the fix_permissions script in both Amon_RA and RomManager but without success. I have system:system permissions on /data.
Is there a way to wipe /system aswell prior to an install, or does that happen when you flash a .zip?

How did you install the nightly. Even with my issues of 109Mb used up on data before I install anything, I have the latest nightly running along with latest Gapps and approx 50 of my own apps, with 79Mb free internal. I used clockwork recovery, then under storage options, you can run format options, on boot, system, data, cache, and SD-EXT and then under advanced, wipe dalvik-cache. I also added the data factory reset option also. I then clean installed the nightly. Then after an initial setup to just have it running, flashed the gapps. I did initially have approx 75Mb free Internal before the Gapps install. Then I went down to 53MB after gapps. I verified I had the correct settings in settings:Cyanogen Mod for the file system. I then flashed the latest Dark Tremor script, ran the commands for a2sd check, a2sd reinstall, a2sd zipalign and a2sd cachesd to move the dalvik-cache to sd. I have an EXT3 setup on my SD card. After moving Dalvik cache I jumped from 28Mb free to 79Mb free where it's pretty much staying now. Not as much as others that don't have the issues on /Data but at least useable.

[Q] Bricked, and Odin doesn't fix it

I updated my phone to Cognition 2.1.2, and think i bricked it. I was on Cognition 2.1.1, i disabled the lag fix as per the instructions, and then installed cognition 2.1.2 with Rom manager. when my phone rebooted it seemed to work fine. Then i realized that there was no calculator app installed anymore. I went into the settings screen, but when i clicked on any of the options it would highlight, but not do anything. I rebooted, but i got stuck on an ATT boot loop.
I then pulled the battery, got into the download mode with the button combo, and did an odin oneclick back to stock. however, when it rebooted it went into the stock recovery console and gave an error message "cant mount \dev\block\ stl11"
After that i tried updating with odin 3 to JH2. Everything went ok, but when it reboots it still goes to recovery, but this time it gives me a differnet error
Code:
format_vfat_device -> argv[4] : android
format_vfat_device -> argv[5] : /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
run_program: child exited with status 1
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(No such File or Directory)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount SDCARD:copy default media content failed.
I can boot into download and recovery with the button combos
I can use adb when in recovery , I'm not sure what to do though (I can't mount with shell, nor can i get to su
I can't get to ClockWork Mod Recovery as it was'nt the last update.zip, and when i try to reinstall packages it says
Code:
E:can't mount SDCARD:update.zip
Installation aborted.
I'm pretty sure this has to do with the lag fix. I think that odin can't wipe the ext4 partition even though i disabled the lag fix.
Please help, am i completely bricked? If so should i return to att even though its been rooted? I guess i could say it was from the OTA.
I would suggest making sure that you disable the lagfix by
Code:
adb shell
touch /sdcard/voodoo/disable-lagfix
Reboot, and it will probably say "converting back to rsf blah blah blah" It takes like friggin 10 minutes to disable
Then I would try to replace the update.zip with the clockwork recovery update.zip. I uploaded it here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/115587/update.zip To do this I would use
Code:
adb push [local path to update.zip] /sdcard/update.zip
In my case since I'm using a mac (I put it in my downloads folder) I did
Code:
adb push ~/Downloads/update.zip /sdcard/update.zip
Then try to go into recovery mode and reinstall packages, hopefully clockwork will come up and you can restore a good version of your phone
Hope it helps

i dont know a whole lot about adb or even know if this is possible, but is there a way to reformat the internal sd card in adb like there is in the stock settings menu? if you reformat that should get rid of all traces of anything including lagfixes correct?
I am unable to use the touch command because it can't mount the Internal SD. it gives me
Code:
touch not found
even when i touch files that i now were there.
I wonder if i could flash the voodoo kernal back on to it if it would take care of it. is there a .tar of it that can be flashed with odin 3?
Is there a way to see what partitions are on the internal sd, and like di11igaf said, is there a way to reformat with adb?
Also i don't think warranty covers putting it through the laundry and w/ insurance it costs like $125 to replace
Wow this one is a bit of a headscratcher.
Have you tried manually flashing in a voodoo compliant kernel just to see if it will boot? It's not mounting the internalSD, which is bizarre, but I do know that stock kernels can't read EXT4 data- now I don't know why your internalSD might get switched over, and I have very little expectation that this will work, but at this point what's the harm?
I thought of manually flashing in a voodoo kernal, but the only ones I can find are update.zip or with clockwork mod methods neither of which i can get to. Is there a voodoo kernal that can be flashed with odin3?
Edit: I just flashed unhelpfuls kernal and i am now getting a different error message
Code:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/stl11
(Invalid argument)
I have flashed a voodoo kernel but it just tries to create the ext4 partition, fails and reboots. The problem is that there is now no /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 or /dev/block/mmcblk0p2. There is still a /dev/block/mmcblk0 but since we both tried to flash stock with Odin we no longer have root to attempt recreating the partitions. We also can't flash anything from recovery since there is no /sdcard.
We need a rooted ROM that is flashable with Odin. The e3 recovery also has an option to reformat the internal sdcard but I've only found it with i9000 ROMS where the captivate power button doesn't work to select it.

This may sound crazy, but do you happen to have the update.zip from ROM Manager on the root of your sdcard? From the sounds of it, once you switch back to the voodoo kernel your phone is able to mount your SD again, now it's just encountering errors on your NAND. If you can get into clockwork recovery go in there and have it format your SDCard, once you've done that, try to flash back with Odin one click and see if everything starts working again.

that wont work, I have been messing with this all morning. The op has a corrupted internal SD card. Nothing will fix this because it wont mount. Its just like any other sd card that gets corrupted.
I even went as fas as flashing eugene's froyo that dont brick from the vibrant forums. thats the only 2.2 rom that will partition the internal sd. but a corrupted sd is a whole other ballgame. Just get another phone.

You did catch the part where after flashing the voodoo compliant kernel he's no longer getting the error where he can't mount the internalSD, and is instead getting a message about a partition on the NAND not initiating? The theory here is that perhaps SOMEHOW the internalSD has got some EXT4 data on it that the stock kernel can't understand, so it refuses to mount it, the voodoo enabled kernel DOES understand it, and as such will mount it. The objective is to get that internalSD formatted again so that he can switch back to a stock kernel and have it recognized
I'd also like to add that eugene's kernel also doesn't read ext4 =P Noticing a pattern here?
Another thing that might be worth trying... though doubtful. Do an Odin 1 click, yank the battery as soon as it completes before it gets a chance to boot again. Restart Odin and get your phone back into download mode, and flash in the Voodoo kernel, see what errors it spits out on first boot (if any)

No worries bro, was just trying to help. You probably have more exp when It comes to this, I was just letting the OP know what worked for me in the same situation. Seems like the captivate is a little different beast.
for the record I wasnt talking about flashing another kernal. I was talking about flashing a 2.2 rom ( which thru odin) repartitions the internal sd to stock, which will cut out the ext 4 lag fix issue. It did for me anyway.
With the cant mount issues, I think its currupted. ATT gave my friend another phone with next day shipping. they also said that phones are soft bricking like crazy because of the ota update. so I dont think the OP will have much of a issue saying it was the ota update and getting another phone.

Sorry I didn't mean to come off harsh My theory here is that SOMEHOW voodoo is writing EXT4 data to the internalSD outside of the NAND area and in some cases it's corrupting it in such a way that the internalSD cannot be read by the stock kernel (since it has no EXT4 support) so in theory if you can get the internalSD mounted again it can be reformatted to allow a stock kernel to return to use... if this is the case, or at least close enough to what's happening it would fully explain why the froyo kernel with repartition couldn't touch the internalSD (It couldnt mount or read it due to the limitations for file systems in a stock kernel)
Looks like the sdcard on mine has had it. I got root and ffdisk and parted still give I/O errors when trying to read or write to /dev/block/mmcblk0.

Is this after using a Voodoo kernel? And are you attempting to perform the ffdisk and parted commands while using a voodoo kernel, or stock? I'm just trying to gather as much information as possible on this problem, so forgive all the questions
I'm about to try parted with a voodoo compliant kernal (unhelpful's) But for some reason adb isn't finding my phone when its in recovery. Does this have something to do with the unhelpfuls kernal, or should i just uninstall and reinstall the drivers a few more times?

Nah, make sure you have the phone plugged in when you turn it on and go into recovery. For some reason plugging it in when it's already in recovery doesn't work. At least it doesn't for me...
Ok, i tried that, but its still not connecting. Tried multiple usb ports, and uninstalled/reinstalled drivers. If i put it in download mode it gets recognized instantly.

Not sure =/ I had it running last night without too much issue, but I did have to juggle it around a bit before it would find the device. You might want to try doing an adb kill-server before you try to connect in case the system still thinks its running

Getting past N7000 LM5 bootloop without wiping

My Galaxy Note N7000 was on the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 LM5 (HK) firmware with "PhilZ-cwm6-ZSLM5-OZS-4.35-signed.zip" installed.
Phone internal memory was repartitioned to 10.9GB for /system and 2 GB for /data since I store most of my files on the microSD card anyway.
The phone was working nicely although I did experience a boot loop problem when I first flashed it because I changed the phone ID with Titanium Backup, so I did a wipe to get out of the boot loop.
But today in my haste to pull the SIM card out of the phone I forgot to completely shutdown my phone before pulling the battery out, and as expected the boot loop returned.
Searched around xda and it seems that everyone's solution is to wipe the phone to factory default.
The problem was that I haven't backed up my phone for quite a while and I wasn't willing to wipe the phone again and lose all of my data if I can avoid it. :crying:
So after fiddling with the phone, at recovery I noticed that it wasn't able to mount the /data partition, so I fired up adb shell and tried to mount it manually by using "mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p10 /data" but it spouted out an IO error.
Apparently, my phone was stuck in the bootloop because it wasn't able to mount the /data partition because of a file system error which happened because of the unclean shutdown/battery pull.
Figuring that my data is toast anyway if I wiped the phone to get past the bootloop, I experimented with these commands :
Code:
adb shell
umount /data
e2fsck -y /dev/block/mmcblk0p10
e2fsck reported that the journal was corrupted and there was a gazillion of 'multiply-claimed block' errors on the partition, but finally after an hour it finished but with some note that there's is still some error in the lost+found null node something.
I tried to mount the /data partition with Touch Recovery again and it worked, so I restarted and it gets past the boot screen and all my data are still intact.
I am now flashing the new UBLSF and PhilZ new kernel with bootloop fix, I hope that gets rid of the bootloop problem for good.
This seems similar to the problem and solution posted here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040107
Hope my experience is useful to others who experience similar problem
Thank you. Really helpful.

this also happen when the battery is completely empty and the phone perform unclean shutdown this is why you must stop using your phone at 1% battery to prevent this stupid bootloop

I did that too, then I fixed data partition, yet since that incident. It happens several times that I find my phone shut (even though the battery is full), then the phone is boot looping. I can't understand the reason for this.
Hi, yesterday my phone suddenly restart few times before stuck at the samsung boot animation. Until today my GNote unable to get pass the boot animation. Is there any way to fix this without data wipe because I didn't expect this would happen so I haven't backup my data yet. I'm using samsung latest official Jelly Bean. Non rooted. Last activity before it happen, playing games & update few apps in play store. This is the first time I post in this forum. Sorry if there's any mistake I've made.
Can you connect your phone to the PC? And try to use the phone while keeping it plugged in to charge. How old is your battery? If you can conncet to the PC, you can take a copy of your data.
I can copy files from sdcard. But not from internal storage. And I actually need to backup my sms, call log, etc.. which need to able to boot the phone. battery is almost 1 year already.
Can you use the phone while keeping it plugged in? There must be an issue with some app, maybe after updating it, any app you suspect?
I no longer can use the phone since it stuck at samsung boot animation there. And I can't really remember which apps I was updating.
thank you! this worked for me. so glad i didnt need to spend half a day reloading everything!
i didnt even need to go to adb. i used the console from CWM
you should mention that one needs to mount the volumes of interest first in order to discover the /dev/block name (and then umount). a la http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2165870
FYI:
i WAS able to mount /data with cwm utility. but when i tried e2fsck -n, it threw a lot of complaints, so i did it again with a -y, and it rebooted fine.
i also tried browsing around /data with Aroma from CWM. some data/* i could view, but it froze when i tried to look in the delvik folder.
is there a more convenient utility to fsck the whole system everything?
you said, "now flashing the new UBLSF and PhilZ new kernel with bootloop fix". i have PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT4-OXA-x.xx.x-signed.zip. so is there a better cwm i should use to prevent future bootloop?
what is UBLSF?

Glad that helps.
At my device, the /data partition is always located at the /dev/block/mmcblk0p10 so I didn't think it was necessary to mention it. Of course, if you repartition your device then the block might change but I guess you should be advanced enough when you've been playing with the partition.

UBLSF refers to official Samsung firmware Jelly Bean 4.1.2 for Trinidad and Tobago (N7000UBLSF_N7000UUBLSF_TTT).
But no, even that firmware isn't immune to the bootloop, I still experienced one bootloop with UBLSF firmware.
Thankfully I have this thread so I was able to recover my data intact in just a few moments, would've forgot the steps without this thread.
It works!

I thank you from the bottom of my heart! You saved my data!
I was experiencing problems with the Note (rooted, CWM recovery, Philz kernel) and space on the internal memory, so I wiped the Cache and Dalvik partitions (I've done that many a times to be casual about it). The phone restarted thereafter, but went dead all of a sudden, forcing me to do a hard reset. It went into a boot loop, and I could not revive it.
Luckily, I found this thread, and after looking through various other links, I was able to download ADB (without the SDK). Somehow, I could not get ADB to see the device in the download mode (vol down + middle button + power), but it was visible in the recovery mode (vol up + power + middle). [Edit: I ended up taking the necessary steps in Recovery mode after all].
I had been able to mount /data from CWM Touch recovery, but when I tried to backup, the process had been exiting on reaching the /data folder. So I checked the unmounted volume as you had indicated, and it did find some errors! I checked all the other unmounted volumes for good measure, and they turned out to have no errors. (Actually, as I didn't know which block device referred to each of them, I checked with the 'mount' command both before and after mounting/unmounting them from Touch recovery )
The phone restarted after fixing the /data partition, booted up, but hanged after mounting the memory cards and establishing a connection. I had to do a few hard and soft restarts after that, but nothing has been corrupted. It is stable right now on airplane mode, and I'm backing up data via KIES. I think I'll do a factory reset later and restart from scratch.
In summation, your trick worked, and it should be recommended as the first thing one tries. Thanks again!
I have this problem

this also happen when the battery is completely empty and the phone perform unclean shutdown this is why you must stop using your phone at 1% battery to prevent this stupid bootloop

Hi !
I have this problem with my Note and couldn't find a topic explaining how to get out of this loop (in this particular case).
Do you know one or what to do?
I'm JB (I don't know my baseband but it's the official one I got OTA in France, couldn't find it on sammobile). I didn't do anything since the update a few month ago.
I still have the download mode and the recovery menu
Can I wipe securely on JB?
I have retired my original Note N7000 and moved on to Note 3 N9005, so my memory might be a bit rusty.
If you have all original firmware on your Note, I think it would be safer to first flash in PhilZ's safe kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191) on the device before wiping to avoid the brick bug.
You can then do the wipe from the recovery menu.
If you have some data you need to recover from the device, maybe you can give the method described in the original post to check for filesystem errors and have your Note out of the bootloop.
Good luck.
thanks a lot Mannn :good:
you just save me from reinstalling from scratch

[Q] Is my internal storage dead?

I am trying to get my Son's Captivate back up and running.. while it has no phone service, he uses it all day long. It was running Cyanogen Mod 10 .. he sat it down to eat.. when he came back the screen was black with the buttons lit up and no response.
He did a battery pull to restart it and it came back looping Error to mount /SDcard and a count down.
I got it into recovery and am not able to mount /data or /emmc. And it is failing to install a ROM from zip.
I tried using "I897UCKK4 Stock, Wipe, with options to install Bootloaders, Param, and Re-partition-One-Click" and it runs through the process.. flashing Kernal, Modem, FactoryFS, DBDataFS and CACHE successfully.. then the device reboots and goes through a few things on screen, and fails on Formatting /data ( E:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 ) but everything else says success. Hitting "reboot system now" says that it cant copy the log because of failure to mount /emmc.. then reboots to the same recovery and does the copy of Media and Appling Multi-CSC (their spelling mistake not mine) over again.
Flashing back to a CWM 6 recovery and still no mounting of /data or /emmc. And it just boots right into the recovery.
I tried --repartition with Heimdall and it said it uploaded the S1JE4.pit fine. Same things..
So is there anything I can to to test the internal storage to KNOW if it is faulty or is there anything else I can do?
I would really like to get this thing working again for my little dude.. he is so sad as all heck to not have his Android Buddy. :crying:
Seems likely internal sd may be dead, particularly if someone ran ICS on it at some point. If you have an external sd card, at least 8GB, this thread may help-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21439417
you could use cm10.1 instead of the ICS rom mentioned in the thread.

[HELP PLEASE] NEED HELP WITH make_ext4fs

Hello. So i have a S3 LTE with possibly(?) an insane eMMC. Long story short: phone bought back in dec 2012. Changed battery twice. Last battery started acting up, lost all power, next thing i know phone is in permanent bootloop. Odin won't repartition the phone (idk why) nor can it flash a full firmware, getting stuck on SYSYEM flash, but can flsh recoveries. After fiddling around with recoveries, i finally flashed TWRP. What i found out : /cache, /system, /data, /sdcard and /tombstones couldn't be mounted (invalid argument). After wiping everything with make_ext4fs, everything works fine, except for /tombstones, which can't be mounted. What i have seen from the logs is that twrp doesn't wipe /tombstones as well, so there was no way of getting it to work.
Full story here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/help-i9305/i9305-bootloop-mount-data-sdcard-t3379377
WHAT MY PROBLEM IS:
I need somebody to tell me the parameters for make_ext4fs in order to wipe /tombstones as well, as it seemed to work flawlessly with the other folders.
UPDATE: I managed to wipe /dev/block/mmcblk0p11, which mounts in /tombstones. used rm -fr, then mkdir for the tombstones folder. Everything mounts just fine now. Will reflash and post an update.
UPDATE 2: Phone still won't work with odin. i flashed amcha with twrp. Boots just fine, but 10 seconds after boot finishes, phone freezes and won't respond to button presses. Any ideas?
