I'm interested in remapping the ok button (the one on the side, below the scroll wheel, not the one below the end key) to rotate the screen. However, I can't seem to find out how to do anything at all with this button. Can anyone help?
i'd like this also.
I'm wondering if maybe this has to be done within the registry?
i remember reading in a thread before this that the remapping was not possible for that OK button... but i am not sure i could be wrong
try hbutton. it lets you map about anything to the hard buttons. you can map multiple programs to one button too. i use it to map the OK button to close a program, open htc audio, and screen rotate.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=306794
if you are referring to the ok button on the front of the kaiser, i remapped that button to rotate the screen from; settings>buttons. i am, however, using a sim free htc tytnII. this may not be available in the network branded versions. hope this helps.
sorry misread your post, you were talking about the side one. doh! no i couldn't remap that one either.
at this moment no one can really find the registry for that button. people have tried, i read about 3 posts that had people trying and they were unsuccessfull
i am still also interested in getting that button remapped
AE button plus will remap the side button, except if you are on the today screen, where a press of the button will bring up the start menu.
i currently have it to turn off the phone, since i friggin hate how htc made the real power button so flush with the body, so that if i'm on the today screen, i press it twice quickly to power off the device. the first press brings up the start menu, then the second press will take the focus off the today screen and implement your action. likewise, hitting the side button will turn off the phone if i'm in any sort of application or anything non-today screen.
and mapping this buttom also maps the keyboard ok, so now i'm suddenly without a keyboard ok button
What exactly is this Side Ok Button for anyways? It doesnt act as a confirm button
I would also like to remap the OK button to rotate screen. When I am using Garmin I like to have it rotated for cradle and visual purposes.
Also, don't know if anyone ever noticed this. I have polarized sunglasses, and when my phone is facing up and down like in portrait mode it is not as bright as it could be, but i rotate it like it is in landscape mode and I can see perfect with them on. Weird!
Let me know if this doesn't work out. I wrote apps for the Universal once to assign to any key. But that was a long time ago. I'm sure better solutions exist now.
V
You can do it for sure with SPB Pocket Plus & the Shortcut Add-in/Plugin.
I actually made an action sender for this purpose, for another button, but if I get some time , I'll pull out my old work & look.
But SPB PP does allow it for sure. You can map two of anything to that button, one for press & one for press & hold.
Anything new on this?
I've tried some different things...still nothing.
another bump...
bump it up again...anyone know how to remap the OK button (forget the rotate screen)?
just wanted to see what everyone thinks about the button layout.
should we keep it?
should we change it?
how can we change the button layout ourselfs?
is there any progress on making an application to allow us to change our button layout?
what does everyone think?
im used to the button layout now but i would love to customize it to my liking.
There needs to be a third option. "Allow for customization"
Everyone perceives their needs differently.
EDIT: Should also mention that I'm fine with it the way it is, but the way your post is worded makes the third option necessary.
Leave it,
Its perfect.
leave it. Only add button combination for running apps.. If everyone's is different, you will have a hard time giving directions based on buttons.
i like it the way it is as well. the only thing nicer would be more buttons; if we were able to get the red button to "go home, then sleep" it would allow long press camera to be used to display running applications.
a program to modify the keymap was in the works. don't know what happened to it.
i think it would be awsome if the keymap were like this. power is power, volume is volume, 1 tap camera goes to landscape, long press camera goes to camera, left d-pad is back, right d-pad is forward, up d-pad is menu, down or center d-pad to go home, red end button as is, green button as is.

can't change dpad function - need it for many games. for those who don't play games, would be great. once again, individualizable keymap seems best.
I personally like it.
We used to have an older configuration but this current one seems very usable making efficient use of the keys we have.

If you mean the original, menu on the volume slider, that was THE worst. Last year I quit Android as soon as I started because I hated using the volume slider all the time.

personally i was in love with the old layout
i loved how holding the home button showed all running apps and made switching between them a breeze
if we could somehow incorporate the old layout
id be all for it!
even though i'm accustomed to the current one

it would be cool to have that button layout and make the center d-pad to swith back to the current button layout so we can use the d-pad for games and whatnot.

That just seems overly complicated.
When I first switched to Android, I hated the layout, but it's grown on my now. Only thing I wish is for a spare button that could be made into a search button so I could have working quick compose in chomp sms.

Hi guys,
So, as the thread says, i am having a problem with screen positioning, its landscape mode and i want it to go portrait mode, BECAUSE i have a damaged X1, some microchip is damaged, and the only buttons working is the turn on button and the camera button, but everything which goes for the touch is working perfectly.
SO, when i start ANDROID system, i always get it in landscape mode, and as none of my buttons work, i cant just "slide out and slide in" the telephone to change the view, so is there any way to change the default starting view ? maybe to change some kind of code or line in settings ?

Yes , it will be, but i tried to repair it, i repairmans told, that this device is unrepairable... So i either throw it away or manage to use android ... Can anyone help ?
On some of the iPad knockoffs running android, they put only the home button on the device, and put software buttons for back and menu in the top right of the screen. Maybe you can find some way to get that?

As for the rotate, when I press the menu button on the home screen, it seems to realise that the keypad is in fact closed and rotate the correct way. So if you can get the menu button up there, then press that on the homescreen and it should rotate to the correct orientation.

You can maybe remap the keys like this:
Camera focus = back
Camera = home
Power = menu
But I don't know how to do it.
Sent from my MSM using XDA App
Camera focus is already mapped to back button in "Froyo FRG83 - Android 2.2.1 Beta-Release [06-11-2010] from neopeek", but camera is mapped to turn off.
Also with that configuration, how would you turn off your device or put it into standby?
@tads999 calm down dude. Remember that YOU need help, not us. So don't yell at guys that want to help.

Take out the battery to turn off.
Have a timer that enters standby after some minutes if nobody touch it and listen to all working keys so he can exit standby.
And if I would have his X1 I would be pleased if it could run Android.

LOL, got a brilliant idea, i will try to remap the key which enters when u slide ur phone out and in, if this will work, i will be able to run android perfectly ;D
Just wondering if people have done it and didn't like it, or vice-versa. It does seem bad for the hardware, but I can't stand softkeys/button saviour.
If you're using nookie Froyo, you can try the MENU/BACK soft buttons in the status bar mod, instead of remapping the vol+/- buttons. I've been using it since it came out, and can confim it works for nookie Froyo 6.7. Here's the link to the original thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932631
It does have it's issues, mainly with the stock browser, and causing it to FC. Other than that I have not noticed any other problems.
If you are interested in useing the mod, but don't know how to install it, let me know. I'll pm you or post instructions.
I absolutely recommend remapping the volume buttons. Softkeys is nice, but kind of a pain sometimes. For instance, when I would view pictures in the XDA APP, I would have to restart the app instead of backing out, for some reason softkeys wouldnt let me back out of the picture viewer. It's just much easier to have the menu and back buttons always available than rely on software. I installed volume volume control if I need to adjust volume for some reason.
Is there an app that puts volume in the status bar that anyone knows of?

Yup... I've got a Pandigital Novel(white v2) w/custom fw and it'd be essentially useless w/o re-mapping the vol keys to menu and back along with soft-keys in the notification bar...
NC has one up on the WPDN though, it has the n home key plus the 2 vol keys and volume can be controlled through setting or a quick-settings app anyways or by adding soft-keys... still no substitue for physical keys or capacitive screen keys though, unfortunately... (spoilt by gtab with the full complement...)

I'm sure you guys know where I'm screwing up. After I adb pull, I only get this
/system/usr/keylayout/twl4030-keypad.kl -> ./twl4030-keypad.kl
/system/usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl -> ./qwerty.kl
/system/usr/keylayout/AVRCP.kl -> ./AVRCP.kl
but it says to edit " 'TWL4030_Keypad.kl' and 'omap_twl4030keypad.kl' "with your text editor of choice; I used vi, always a safe choice.
I don't have the omap. what should I do?

Just modify the qwerty.kl in the place of omap. That's what I did and things are working fine.

I am on the stock 1.1 rooted and have mapped my volume buttons - I have tried the other ones, and I MUCH prefer having hard buttons.
I downloaded a volume app "Volume Master Free". It has about 5 different volume controls, but I only use the system volume and the media volume controls.
I use Zeam as home screen; and I put a shortcut to Volume Master on the bottom right of my Zeam shortcut bar. It works very well. I do need to go to the home screen to change volume; but I can tap on the notification bar and toggle mute, so that works for me.
Yes, it makes a huge difference on the stock rom and froyo -- though honeycomb's soft buttons eliminate the need to do so.
Can't recommend remapping the keys enough. On froyo it makes a huge difference in functionality on. The device, life is a pain without it.

I remapped.
I also recommend remapping your volume buttons. It's handy having tactile buttons for the back and menu functions.
What really sold me on remapping was that I didn't like to have a Softkeys button floating on the home screen. Without a floating button, I would have to double tap the hardware "N" button to bring up the Softkeys interface, then hit "menu" or "back." If I have to double tap a hardware button to use "menu" or "back," I might as well just remap those functions to the volume buttons and use a single tap.

thanks. will attempt over the weekend
can remapping the volume buttons be done when running cm7 nightlies off SD ?
I didn't find a definitive answer
I ran with the CM7 softkeys, Button Savior, remapped volume keys and I just finally settled on zMooth.
I'm posting this topic cause I couldn't find any answer to my question which is:
Is it possible to make my home button behavior as a power button while at lockscreen?
I would like to turn my screen on and off with only home button. I can turn it on just with home btn but when I want to turn it off I have to move my thumb to power button what is for me not as comfortable as it shuold be. And if it's not possible than mayby there's a way to reduce the "lock screen on" time?
I'm running on the latest Galnet 6.0.1.0
Thanks in advance for answer ; )
search for an app called 'button remapper' in google, i think its got that feature
hmm... thanks for that, but it's not exacly what I need.
It's partially is but i wanted to change home button behavior only on lockscreen. For now I made my home button to work as power and power as home. It seems that I don't need to change the whole behavior but only to add one functionality that make my home button work as power one while being at lockscreen.
I know it's just a whimsy but would be nice to make it work as I want ^^
And again. Thanks for your help !
