CAPTIVATE - Frozen on AT&T Boot, Unrecognized via USB, NO access to CWM - PLEASE HELP
HI - I've been fighting this captivate for over 48 hours. Being very familiar with all this, and not doing this for the first time either, the fact that I can't get this resolved drives me insane as I have never been so mentally exhausted in being incapable of resolving a problem, thus seeking professional guidance from the Gods on mobile technology!
HERE IS THE SPIEL:
Device: Samsung Captivate i897 (Device is rooted)
Software: AOKP build.38
Kernel: IcyGlitch v14
CWM: Installed v.5-----
The Problem
Device stuck at AT&T Logo - Not Looping (just stuck)
Windows XP Professional SP3 (x86) with all recommended USB drivers will not detect device. Device Manager displays the phone as unknown, regardless of drivers & upon inputting it into a USB (2.0) windows displays a message "USB Device is not recognized".
Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64) brings up identical message as that of Windows XP with all proper & recommended drivers with the phone recognized as "unknown"
Device boots into download mode via holding Vol.+/- and plugin in USB cable. Both Heimdall & Odin can't recognized the device when it's in UNKNOWN state by windows. Although all drivers are installed.
Purchased new Micro USB cable - NOTHING - that's testing all USB ports on all my systems.
The Story:
The device was working flawlessly being able to mount as mass storage on both my Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64) & Windows XP Professional SP3 (x86) until i've upgraded to AOKP build #38. The upgrade was successful (2 months ago). 2 days ago, i decided to upgrade to AOKP build #40. The device was not recognized as mass storage but rather "Unknown Device" or "USB Device not Recognized" - although the phone was in full working condition (USB Debugging was enabled). After some reading, I realized that the AOKP build #38 has a bug where there was a problem with mounting & the camera was not functioning since it had no access to external_sd (a problem that was very irritating since the update, but i had no time to look into it until recently). I followed a similar tutorial (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1545801) which required the editing of the vold.fstab file with Root Explorer, resolving the issue of external_sd becoming accessible on the phone with camera working, however unable to mount and copy the new AOKP Build 40 ROM through Windows to flash via CWM.
At this point I booted into CWM via holding volume +/- & power button. Wiped everything, and loaded a backup I've done a # of months ago where everything was working perfectly. There was an error when it was "...loading data image" which is normal, so I did it again and the error persisted. On the second attempt, it again re-sent me primary CWM menu where i was intending to now load another backup. I accidentally clicked the restart button, having already cleaned the devlick cache, etc, including user data which brought me this NIGHTMARE of problems.
I will be forever grateful the the kind soul which will help me resolve this, as I am at a phase of taking this samsung captivate and throwing it against a wall.
I assume you can still access recovery? Try putting CM9 on the external SD with a card reader, and flashing that...
EDIT: Just saw you can't access CWM... Try recovery again... all three until ATT comes up, immediately let off power... Try multiple times... Leave the battery out, hold all three, have someone else insert it, and let off power at ATT... When going into download mode, leave the battery out, hook it up, hold boths vols, and insert the battery...
The Unknown device issue....
Uninstall your drivers... Here are drivers to manually install, they are 64bit... so try right clicking the Unknown device in device manager and doing a manual driver update...
OP,

B-Naughty: Thank you. I have tried this & that no luck. Even loaded Linux Mint 13, however heimdall is being a !*&#@ in loading the firmware...Perhaps if you would know any (proper) packages for a Samsung Captivate i897 via heimdall id be grateful. I used heimdall-suite-1.3.2 command line & frontend. Will try again tomorrow. Although still haven't figured out whether or not it read the phone in Linux (it's a different world for me)
4-2ndtwin: My friend, thank you for the detailed link. I have been doing this for over 48 hours ... nothing. I'll give it another shot via Linux, if not i'll try Ubuntu. Truly am just confused out of my mind, never had this before.
PS: The phone's data is wiped & it's stuck at AT&T when loaded via power button. Booting into DOWNLOAD MODE isn't a problem. All combination to load into recovery, did not work. I mean...there must be a way! There always is...Any further ideas or should i simply through it out and buy a Galaxy SIII?
I897UCKK4 Stock, Wipe, with option to install Bootloaders, Param, and Repartition-Heimdall One-Click
And try all of your USB cords, I don't know what you bought, but a bad one, or a lot of times an aftermarket one won't work...
Edit:
I saw you can get into download mode. So my original post doesn't help much.
Have you tried installing the Andoid SDK and downloading the nexus drivers from there? Perhaps your device now thinks it is a nexus. It might be worth a shot.

Yes... I second this ^

This happened to me and I just reflash the boot loader and reinstalled the same from to keep my data
Decrapitated Samsung
Thank you all for the support.
At this point I've installed SDK Manager w/Google USB revision 6, latest Java, all proper drivers...nothing. Tried all usbs on all systems.
Q: If the phone goes into download mode, is it not in a default state and must be detected? I have a samsung galaxy tab 10.1, detects immediately. Samsung YPS3 mp3 player detects immediately - Samsung Captivate however, nothing...
I set up a clean Windows 7 Ultimate x64bit (all june 2012 updates + .Net 4.0). Installed all usb drivers...same thing, UNKNOWN DEVICE - so the usb cable works...but now when you go and manually upgrade driver via device manager, it says that the best driver for the unknown device is already installed.
Anyone want's a free captivate lol...
At this point...I dont even know what to ask...since i've tried everything. I'll try to revisit Ubuntu & Linux later this evenings and report status!
Thanks for the I897UCKK4 Stock, Wipe, with option to install Bootloaders, Param, and Repartition-Heimdall One-Click link, i can't use it since the phone isn't detected by the application
I would say you need to uninstall any/all drivers for your captivate. This includes heimdall installed drivers. Make sure to uninstall the drivers for the "unknown" device also.

Seems as though you have a hardware problem with the phone, or a s/w problem so messed up you're down to Unbrickable Mod

He had a fresh Windows install and install drivers...
Unbrickable MOD - wont be able to do this my self, would need an electric to look into it. I mean the phone isn't bricked, it accesses download mode i just have to get it to connect via usb to be read as a "samsung composite device" to flash the bootloader. As now, it would be stuck at the AT&T screen without giving access to CWM.
I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 - set up java 7 - loaded Heimdall One-Click stock rom provided above via java...tried all USB's phone not detected via DOWNLOAD MODE. Phone not detected at all!
This is just insane...If it's in DOWNLOAD MODE, it should be accessible, not the contrary. Ubuntu doesn't need usb drivers, should be plug&play...Both XP & Win7Ultimate at least recognized the phone as an unknown device. On Ubuntu it does nothing at all, as if it never was plugged in.
The microusb slot on the phone is not damaged / cable is stock, also have another one from Staples. The system w/XP is reading all devices on a plug&play basis and read the captivate before flawlessly. Same applies to the Asus P43 laptop, which read the device without hesitation on Win7 Ultimate x64. The Ubuntu is now on the laptop...tried connecting the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (Samsung) it recognized it immediately...with full access to files etc.
Last plea for Ideas...before i'll send this captivate to hell, to where the journey isn't captivating at all!
It sounds like you have a bad flash. You need jtag to fix this issue. Contact mobiletechvideos and Josh should be able to repair it for you. I think at this point you've tried every other option.

did u try reverting back to stock using ODIN 1 Click Stock Firmware Installer? there's a tutorial on youtube by mobiletechvideos original post by connexion2005.
Samsung Captivate (ODIN 1 Click Stock Firmware Installer)
youtube.com/watch?v=UDtxnH4lFuk
I would like to have that free captivate thou :good:
Same Problem
i have the same prob and if i try to recovery mode (i.e. by pressing volume buttons and power button simultaneously)
i get following type of errors
"E:failed to mount /cache (Invalid argument)
E:Can't mount/cache/recovery/recovery_kernel_log
E:copy_kernel_file :: Can't open /cache/recovery/recovery_kernel_log"
kindly sugeest some way out
I have done everything possible to get it connected and recognized by the PC & all is failing. I have tried to "manually" install the Samsung composite Device driver via "have disk method in Device Manager.
In XP:
I load device manager and than do the following:
Click Universal Serial Bus Controllers
Right click "unknown device" which is the captivate
Select Update Driver
Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Select Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install. (Click Next)
Select "Have Disk" with the (show compatible devices) checked
Browse to the directory of extracted 32bit Windows XP Drivers: SGH-i897_Captivate_USB_Drivers_5_02_0_2
Select "ssadadb2.inf" & click open
And than i get the msg saying:The specified location does not contain information about your hardware
...WTF... I mean really...
Windows 7 Ultimate:
Same procedure as above until you select have disk, pick a proper x64 driver provided by XDA - also tried the Universal_Naked_Driver_Beta_0.6 ...there was progress that got me very excited - the Phone was detected as: Samsung Android Composite Device. Was I happy...until i clicked next and got this msg:Samsung Android USB Composite Device - This device cannot start. (Code10)...
There must be a solution: I had the phone bricked when i first tried to change from stock rom, managed to load it in download mode, and it was detected fine on all systems via USB with the same accessories, worked like a charm...so when this happened i wasn't concerned, as i thought id follow standard procedure, accept it did not work.
Anyone?
Let's try this since you seem to be stuck in a boot loop.
Code:
adb wait-for-device reboot recovery
Make sure your phone is plugged in and reboot it. If your machine recognizes the phone at any point in the boot process it will kick it into recovery.
Once there you can try to restore the backup again.
If this doesn't work, you will most likely need JTAG service. Because of the bad image flash your device might not "think" it is a Captivate any longer and that's why the drivers aren't working.
Red_81 :Thank You. Would you please be more specific & put into a 1,2,3...process?
1. Power off device
2. Plug in to computer
3. Open a command prompt
4. Navigate to adb.exe (android sdk or inside my kk4 root utility)
5. Enter command above
6. Boot up phone.
7. Hopefully go into recovery

Thank you. I've been endlessly fighting the achievement of the PC systems to detect the captivate & no results. Thank you all for you help...when i have time i'll JTAG this device, or probably not even going to bother and pick up a SGIII. By the way Red_81:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1680048 is an amazing app, if only my phone was detected as it's recognized as unknown device, so there isn't much it can do. Although i highly recommend it to anyone else whose phone is detected.
Hey guys!
In advance I'm sorry for asking something that has probably been asked many times before, but I'm unable to find the right answer.
Okay let's start at the beginning. My HTC one with an unlocked bootloader on stock started to display a very irritating bug in that sometimes the screen would not rotate and was stuck in landscape mode. Nothing would help nor rebooting, nor calibrating the sensor. Only booting into the bootloader would somehow help.
Until it did not.
I tried a factory reset, which did not help and then tried just wiping Dalvik and Cache, which did not help too.
Then I tried wiping Data and System, which I now know was very stupid.
The current problem is that I can't figure out how to send a new ROM to my HTC one using adb, when typing adb devices the device does not show up.
My computer does see the device, listed under Android USB devices ad My HTC. I think Fastboot too, recognized the device, because I am able to get the Identifier token.
I have installed the drivers and installed HTC Sync manager. I have restarted my Pc multiple times and changed the USB port the device is connected to.
I too, tried mounting the USB, but either I'm doing it wrong, or it does not work.
Hope one of you can help me! I've been at this all day long...
Adb commands only work when you're booted in the rom or recovery. Fastboot uses fastboot commands. Do you have a custom recovery? If so, you can adb sideload a rom. If not, you can fastboot flash a custom recovery assuming your bootloader is unlocked. You may have mentioned it in your post I just can't remember. Good luck!

Thanks for the help!
Yes, I unlocked my bootloader and have twrp installed.
I think I have narrowed down the problem: that my device is not recognized by the computer in twrp.
When in fastboot, My computer does recognize the device, listed as an HTC one, so the drivers are not the problem.
When booting into recovery, me computer only recognizes the phone for about 3 seconds, when it dissapears.
I have been able to see the device in Adb (using Adb devices).
What could I do? Adb sideload does not work because the computer does not recognize the device.
Hi,
You're on Windows? If yes which version?
Windows 7, but if needed I do have access to a win 8 PC as well.
All x64 by the way.
Ok, maybe take a look here if you use USB 3.0?: [FIX]Fastboot problems on Windows 8 x64 with USB 3.0? Solution inside.
It might work on Windows 7 too, there is a link for the drivers for x64.
Maybe using a toolkit to use ADB/fastboot? Take a look here:
[TOOL]HTC One (M7) All-In-One Toolkit V3.1
[TOOL]HTC One (M7) AIO Toolkit | v1.4
Okay, from now on I'll only use USB 2.0.
I tried these two toolkits, but they suffer the same problem as me in that in order for adb sideload to work the device has to be recognized for longer than 3s after booting into recovery.
I just bought a female-female USB adapter, hopefully installing a rom from a usb stick will work
Ofcourse help would still be greatly appreciated as i will have to wait for over a week till the USB adapter arrives.
Hello to everyone. I have in my possession an Asus Memopad 7 Me173x as the title suggest. It was given to me from a friend to recover it but it seems harder than I figured. Usb debugging mode is not enabled, it cannot go to recovery - when I boot it into recovery it shows me a dead android with a red triangle. I have tried flashing it with numerous different roms using SP Flash Tool, getting all sorts of errors, get past one stumble upon another one. I Installed Linux on my desktop pc to try and flash recovery using fastboot, I added the proper text for the android rules file, but I'm getting the "waiting a device" error. The tablet isnt hardly bricked, like it doesnt turn on. Actually the thing is it boots to android, an error pops, the tablet restarts over and over. When I power it on once, I have to take it apart and remove the battery, because it cant turn off, just keeps rebooting. I thought if I could flash custom recovery and use an sd card to install stock rom using the recovery it should fix. The bootloader is locked, usb debugging isnt checked and the tablet doesnt boot properly. Any guidance towards fixing it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
I'm also new to linux, but kind of getting along.
I did a google research if there is a way to enable usb debugging if the tablet is bricked, but sadly I did not find anything.
I'm in a big predicament. A few weeks ago I installed the MOAR ROM on my Note 5. After installing this ROM I was no longer able to connect my phone to PC. I tried a Windows 8 PC which says I have an unrecognized USB device plugged in. I tried going into Developer settings to set USB mode to MTP but the option didn't exist. I had all USB drivers installed as well. My wife's phone is recognized no problem. When plugging the phone into my linux machine absolutely nothing happened. It used to show the phone in the left navigation panel in my window manager but after installing MOAR ROM it was no longer detected.
Anyway, today I was trying to play Cartoon Wars 3 and since my phone is rooted it wouldn't let me play. I decided to go into the Super User app and disable it to see if the game would work and it didn't. When I went to re-enable the app it said installation failed and asked me to reboot. I clicked reboot and was sent into a boot loop. I thought okay no big deal, I'll just restore a backup in TWRP. When I go to restore the backup and select the backup file it asks which partitions to restore, but there are no boxes to check. It usually has options like system and data but now it's just blank. I tried a factory reset and I'm still in a bootloop. I'm at a complete loss. I don't know what else to do. I've tried download mode and everything but no matter what I do my phone isn't detected by my pc.
I appreciate any help. I don't know what to do. I'm out of a phone right now and don't have a backup. Not to mention I'm in between jobs right now and can't afford a new one right now.
Just flash a stock rom from sammobile.com
Pre req:
*Odin(any vers)
*Stock rom
Steps
*Extract the downloaded stock rom in your PC
*In twrp wipe everything except internal, then boot in to download mode.
*Once in download mode, connect your phone to your pc, then open Odin.
*In Odin, check the "AP" section and locate the downloaded stock rom(the extracted one)
*Hit start.
Hpe that helps

Thank you for your reply but it seems you didn't read my post. My phone is not recognized by any pc.
What is the terminal command to restore a backup? That's pretty much my last ditch effort.
Well I broke my recovery so I'm screwed. I contacted Samsung and they said they would service it for free. Wish me luck.
What would cause the phone to stop being recognized by the PC? I narrowed it down to the MTP software or the micro usb charge port. My Windows computer says Device Descriptor Request Failed. Linux box does nothing. No USB devices are listed when I run lsblk.

when your phone is in download mode,it doesn't work to connect it with samsung kies on your pc?
You could try using the Kies software to reload the stock firmware. Here's an overview of what to do:
- if you don't already have the Kies software installed on your PC, download it (just search Google) and install it. The first time it runs it'll update itself to the latest version so make sure you run it once before proceeding.
- put your phone in Download mode: with the phone completely off, press and hold the Volume Down and Home and Power buttons simultaneously, and release them all when you see the Samsung splash screen
- connect the phone to your PC with the USB cable that came with the phone
-- if you've never had the phone connected to your Windows-based computer before, you'll see messages about installing drivers, etc - just wait until this is done (may take 5 or 10 minutes) [I don't know what happens if you have a Mac - it probably just works]
- in the Kies software, select the second item in the Tools menu and just follow the prompts to enter the model number (in CAPS) and IMEI/Serial Number (both found under the battery - it's ok to remove the battery at this point)
- the Kies software should start downloading the correct firmware for your phone from the Internet; once that's done (depending on your Internet connection speed) it'll begin downloading that to the phone (this probably takes 10 minutes or so)

Kies doesn't work either. I already tried that. When I hook up the phone It says "Device Descriptor Request Failed". It used to connect to my computers until I put MOAR ROM on the phone. Since then it stopped being recognized by my computers. There's either something wrong with the connection or something got corrupted.

What have you already tried?
- are you sure you're using a data cable and not a charging-only cable?
- have you tried a different computer?
- have you installed the Kies software?
- what does Device Manager show when the phone is connected?
- assuming that the phone is working normally, does the phone show anything when you connect it?
- do you have try windows 8 or 10?
can be you found a solution in this forum

I've tried 4 different cables. My wife's S5 works perfectly fine on all computers. I have tried in Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10. I've also tried in Linux Mint. It used to work until I installed MOAR Rom. Windows says Device Descriptor Request Failed. Linux doesn't do anything when hooked up. lsblk doesn't show the device either.
I have a bit of an update. Apparently something happened with all my data cables. I hooked up my wife's phone the other day and I was all of a sudden receiving the same error as the note 5. I went out and bought a new data cable and now her phone connects again. I'm waiting for the Note 5 to charge up so I can try Odin. I'll post back my results.
I apologize to those who told me it was the cable. I just didn't see that it was conceivable that all 4 of my data cables were all of a sudden damaged. Never underestimate the ability of children to destroy every working cable you own.
Well I'm still getting the error. I have some usb cables coming in the mail so once i try those out I'll get back to everyone.

Were you able to fix your issue. I have the same issue. Note 5 N9208, I can get into Recovery (TWRP) and Download mode, but can not boot. The USB connection is showing USB Device Descriptor failed. I have tried 5 different cables and Windows 7/10 Ubuntu and cant get the phone to show up on the PC. I also have changed the USB port of the phone. Any insight would be helpful.

I also see my phone as qualcomm...qloader 9008 when connecting to my pc
Any help?
after having a few heartattacks, ive installed a good Miflsah and a good fastboot rom, and managed to restore my phone to its former glory
no need for further help, but i have a few advices
dont be stupid like me, and listen to directions like theyre the word of god, when they say change from chinese rom to a non official rom, YOU NEED CHINESE, global wont work
and if you're having problems with miflash giving errors, try a bunch of downloads, old, new, everything.
Hi, yet another brick here!
I had an AOSP ROM but I had problems with it. I entered TWRP, downloaded a MIUI official ROM for recovery, wiped the phone from TWRP and decrypting it (there was an option for that). Then I did try to flash the ROM and... black screen. No signs of life.
However, when I connect it to the computer it detects it as the famous Qualcom xxx 9008 (COM10) device. But fastboot is not working, when I type "fastboot devices" it doesn't return anything. ADB doesn't recognize the phone either. Everywhere I saw that I should use MiFlash to recover it, but I took a look at the scripts and are using fastboot to perform the process. But since fastboot doesn't recognize the device, it won't work. I get stuck all the time at "Failed to receive the hello packet".
Fastboot doesn't detect my phone either on Linux or Windows. I tried Linux, virtual Windows 10 (x64) and at last I'm trying on a Windows 10 (x64) computer (no virtualization). No matter what I do, it always stays at the same point. I also used several MiFlash versions (from old builds from last year to the most up-to-date version of XiaomiMiFlash). But since fastboot is not detecting the phone I think there's no point in switching MiFlash versions.
So... what can I do? Should I use the pin short-circuit /deepflash cable method? As of I understand, that is what you use to get into EDL, but if my device is showing 9008 in device manager doesn't it mean that I'm already in EDL? I'm not really sure because all the threads I saw in several forums are a bit messy.
I'll appreciate any help. I don't have phone since 3 days ago and I can survive without it but I need it for my work.
Thank you in advance!
EDIT:
Forgot to say, if I try to power off and power on it doesn't do anything BUT when I plug and unplug from the charger it does show a battery icon with the charged percentage. That's the only sign of life from the phone, aside from being recognized as a 9008 device, but that actually happens when I try to (blindly) get in fastboot mode.
FIXED!!! After four hours testing out several options I found the solution: Open up the phone, unplug the battery cable, plug it again, and voilĂ . The phone automatically got recognized (again) as Qualcomm 9008 device but this time the flash went on flawlessly. It took less than 5 minutes, once succeeded I powered on the device and it ran into MIUI 8 in less than 5 minutes.
So, if you find issues with the command "fastboot devices", unplug the battery and try it again before troubling yourself with deepcables or shortcircuits ;-D
NOTE: Taking out the back cover is very easy, search on youtube, I bought the thing you need for 1$ at the store next to my home (sorry I don't know what it's called).
