Moto x future proof ? - Moto X Q&A

I want to buy moto x and am wondering with although fantastic x8 processor does moto x is future proof for at least 2 years? Or should I go for nexus 5 which is more future proof? How about touchless control? One of the main factors I am buying is because of that

May i know what you mean by FUTURE PROOF?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

Some people still use 3 or 4 year old devices. My S2 still works fine.
If you're a hardcore cutting edge gamer....then you'll maybe need a phone every year or less....but the moto x can do anything any other device can do now, and probably still will 3 years from now.
But ultimately its your research and decision that matters, not any of us. We all have different needs and expectations.

Motorola will probably keep the software updated until Jan/Feb 2015. After that, who knows?

I agree with @nijom, define "future proof".. The X is as "future proof" as any other android device where the carrier has the final say in the updates being pushed to the device.
Unless you get a developer edition X which can be bootloader unlocked, and you can flash custom roms to it. Although options for 3rd party roms are relatively few at the moment, and you'd lose the Moto specific features which make the X so popular.

[DISCUSSION] How long do you intend to use N4?

I used to pay $60 to Sprint and now pay $30 for Tmo prepaid plan. So I'm saving $30 a month, which got me thinking I can now afford a new Nexus phone ($300) every year.
Curious to hear what other N4 owners think about the life expectancy of their N4s. Do you buy every new Nexus phones?
I will use it until it dies or I manage to break it. Not interested in LTE as I am more than satisfied with hspa+ speeds for my needs and I will be transitioning to t-mobile's 30 dollar plan in a couple of months when my AT&T contract ends.
As long as Google will support it. The reason why I got my nexus phone is because of the android update and community support. The price is just a bonus
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Probably until some time in the first or second quarter of 2014, since the Nexus 4 will have long term support as far as I can see. Just hoping we won't see a launch like the N4 with the next Nexus phone.

Same here, if I don't break it earlier it will be 2014.
Till September 2013 at the minimum for me. Then I'll see what the state of the market is and how the new Google X phone is. Hopefully be able to keep it longer :good:
Until I'm tired of flashing roms on it. Which means it peaked out for me and its time for the next NexusX.
500 years 38 days 16 hours 53 minutes 44 seconds
After that I'll give it to one of my kids
Hopefully till 2015-2016. I've used the G1 in conjunction with other phones since 2009, so I feel I could use this thing for many years.

Same. Most apps don't even utilize dual core, let alone 4 cores. Upgrading wouldn't improve real world usage...

Would never buy a new phone just for the sake of having the latest thing.
I won't get a new phone til this one breaks.

I would like to think that I'll use this phone for years to come, bit I'll probably buy the new nexus and sell this to recoup some of the cost.

I will definitely keep the phone until it breaks just like how I'm gonna keep my galaxy nexus until it breaks. I will just let others borrow it or give it to my little brother so that they can enjoy pure Android. I will definitely buy the next nexus at launch though because I'm sure the next one will be even better!

how do i intend to use my N4?
i would say till the next N5 and keylimepie is released probably after this years google i/o. maybe the next nexus will be googles own monster out of the motorola stables.
I'll get my next phone in 2 years when my contract runs out. November 2014 to be exact.
There is no need for a new phone every few months.
Jelly Bean barely pushes two cores so there's no reason to upgrade. I don't know it you guys have noticed yet but Google's is still not as optimized as Apple's. The hardware-to-software performance optimizations just aren't here yet.

Well guys how do you feel about it I was hoping either HTC or moto got it this year. With that said I really do love the nexus 4 design I just hope the next nexus wows me. But I also loved the galaxy nexus too.

Afraid of what CPU they'd put in it. If its Qualcomm, there might be problems with it being open with the Nexus 7 2013 fiasco with JBQ leaving AOSP etc.
I would think either a snap 800 or something like the moto x and the features become standard android in key lime. The funny thing is I hated leaving amoled now I dread going back.

Thats the thing, I want a Snapdragon 800 but I don't want it if the factory images aren't going to be released as well as the GPU drivers. Thats the reason why Nexus 7 still doesn't have factory images available (or binaries).

Its not a true Nexus device if those files are missing. Yeah... I really do like the IPS screen. I think they're going back to Super AMOLED if its amde by Motorola. Its a bummer that LG G2 isn't the base of the Nexus 5. LG screens are amazing.
Maybe a LG G2 Google Play Edition inbound?
I think I see what Google is doing the moto x will probably be almost free on contract by the time nexus 5 is out and new nexus will probably be rock solid design and since everyone is fine paying 600 dollars for Google play editions phones new nexus will probably be 499 or 450

Title of this thread is wrong. If Motorola is making a Nexus phone it would be based on their 4 inch screens thus it would be the new Nexus 4 (not Nexus 5). I could see LG making a Nexus 5 based on the G2 and perhaps Motorola making a Nexus 4 based on the Moto X.

Me too. There must be some prototypes already since there ain't so many months left for the proposed release. They can't just make up something in short period of time.
My money is on Motorola, sadly. They have now that thing going on with their manufacturing plants and everything so logistics and all would be so much easier in US.
Still, LG with G2 specs would have been much better choice.

No way we get two nexus phones and that doesn't make sense one phone to lead the direction of android. Seeing the moto x features and key lime pie around the way I this all makes sense. Now what probably will still do is sell the nexus 4 from lg and maybe 250 for a 16gb. Its not like nexus specs are even dated yet.

LG Nexus 5 is a comin

OK so looks like LG and Google are at it again. I don't even care at this point, either a Moto nexus for probably more money or LG at same price point. Most likely it is LG at this point and we lose the snap 800 in g2 but get the rest.

This is just a made up report based on zero facts. Just like the Moto Nexus rumor. Until there is some real insider information, I wouldn't pay any attention to these rumors.
The thing about a "rumor" is anyone can say whatever they want and claim no responsibility if they are wrong. Being there are about 5 different "next" nexus rumors in this forum, most of these are just brain children of their authors.
Personally, I take everything with a spoonful of salt until Google announces the device.

Sounds familiar...
The G2 is to big
I like how much space is covered by the screen, but the overall size of the phone is to huge in my opinion. Maybe better a 5" screen?
Everything else sounds great for the same price of the N4. But 32GB would be nice.
Buttons on the side are a must. Those back Button are strange.
Isn't there a thread already talking about LG and the rumors about the Nexus 5? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2396728

The Atrix was released about 2 months after the Optimus 2X. I actually had an O2X, worst phone I ever had. ****ty software support as well, took LG well over a year to release ICS, and even then, it was buggy as sh*t etc. Hardware was decent though
I'd rather have Motorola get a chance to build a Nexus phone with the Moto X design.

IMO Moto X design and size is great, but unfortunately everything else is dissapointment. I would like to see next Nexus will have similar design to Moto X, but better CPU (Snapdragon 600 or 800), and better body materials (Kevlar instead on Moto X's plastic).

Just wondering what google is going to do as far as updates to this device? Is it just worth waiting for the nexus 5 smartphone?

I'm tempted by the unlocked BL and wireless charging. But I'm not sire how I will feel about loosing touch less and active notifications.
Anyone have both? And have advice?
I'm not losing touchless controls over anything no mo'.

Wireless Charging sucks. Its slow. I love how fast the Moto X charges. But seriously, the only bonus is that the Nexus is on 4.4.1 now instead of 4.4 to improve camera which is something Moto X has been dealing.

Really curious on how your moto x gets better battery life. I've got a stock Moto x and it barely makes it through the day. My N5 battery easily lasts me into the wee hours
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I had both, and I sold my Nexus 5 to keep the Moto X. For me, one I couldn't deal with not having active notifications and the flip to camera gesture because I'm a big car guy and snap pics on the road a lot. Also, Verizon is by far the best coverage here. Also I found the Nexus 5 to be too big and awkward in my hand, and its the same software, and I don't find any reason to go CM anymore. Also I find the Nexus screen to look a little faded/washed vs the Moto X. I agree with the other guy that I also get better battery life from my Moto X. For me, the Nexus 5 is only better if you want CM, and prefer the bigger screen.
I currently have an S4. I have the Cyber Monday code but I'm torn between the Moto X and Nexus 5. One one hand, the Moto X brings innovation with customization and active notifications. However, i'm concerned about the smaller screen and even less of a usuable area with the on screen buttons. I love my S4's 5 inch 1080p screen.
What has me leaning towards Nexus 5 is the fact that i'm in the last few months of my Sprint contract. Where I live, the service is pretty damn good but i've been wanting to go back to T-Mobile to be on a GSM carrier and can use unlocked devices when I want. I could use the Nexus 5 on Sprint and just carry it over to T-Mo when my contract is up.
I don't have large hands and the ergonomics of the Moto X is another pro.
For me, it comes down to innovaton, customization, and an all-around solid phone vs Stock Android, fast updates, 1080p display and the ability to take it to my next carrier when i'm done with sprint. Hard to choose. My coupon expires on the 11th.

Motorola is a much better manufacturer than LG. My nexus 5 had terrible battery life, a terrible speaker with terrible placement, and the design's just not that great. Sold it for my Moto X.
I use my phones regularly and most of the time use Bluetooth streaming while I'm driving in the field. For some reason the nexus 5 drains fast while I'm streaming Bluetooth.

I had the n5 and it had terrible battery life and build quality. Couldnt deal with the battery life, speaker and vibration(couldnt feel it in my pocket or hear it on my desk). However, I do miss the unlocked bootloader, larger screen and wireless charging but realized i need to be more worried about functionality when dropping $350.
I have the att x and purchased the tmobile version to unlock the bootloader. I can deal with the smaller screen and hopefully the qi receiver i purchased works.. so for me, its the moto x all the way.
How important is battery life to you? That was the major deciding factor for me.
