I sold my S4 last week to buy a M8 or S5, but some reviews on YouTube has sold me to Moto X. Yes I know it sounds crazy but I just need a simple phone with more fluidity than nonsense and bloated features.
Anyway, what I wanted to ask is, which colour should I get? I mean I have heard that the different back plate colours are not only colours, but different colours provide different feel, grip and durability. I want the one which should have the most grip, best durability. So which one should I get?
In India (cause I am here), only five colours are officially available, black, white, red, wood, and royal blue.
Thanks in advance.

All of the colored backs feel the same. They have the exact same soft-touch feel to them. The woven black and white backs have a little bit of a different feel, less grippy almost, but barely. For the wood backs, someone else will have to weigh in because I never owned a wooden back X, but I have heard that they are less grippy. As for durability they should all be able to take the same beating, however, in Pocketnow's durability report Michael Fisher said that the wood was slightly more durable than the colored and woven backs. Ultimately you should pick the color and material that you like the look of most. Any differences in the durability and grip are miniscule. Have fun and welcome!!
TL;DR The grip and durability are about the same, with very slight differences. Get the color you like the look of most and would be happy owning.

The Moto x has tons of customization, customizing the back. Best thing is the features of the phone

Get the developer edition model or the T-Mobile model. The always listening/active display/active assist has been very useful and the twist camera also.
MOTO X
Moto maker has a description of each color, but in general the darker colors are softer. They are described as matte finish or smooth finish (which has less grip) if I've remembered correctly.

Correct me if I'm wrong.....but as neat as the motomakers are, and assuming they come with 4.4.2.....you will never have root. As it stands today.
Something you may want to consider.

From his post, it doesn't seem as if he wants root, just the near-stock experience that the Moto X offers, but maybe I'm wrong.
And you are right, all of the MotoMaker phones come with 4.4.2 now, so no root for them. I kinda got screwed when I made the mistake of getting my X replaced and it came with 4.4.2, so now I have to wait for whomever decides to pick up the task of rooting/bootloader unlocking :fingers-crossed:

No they aren't the same. I have the Red back and it's not soft-touch at all. In fact, the Motomaker site tells you what feel you get with the colours you choose (soft-touch or smooth finish).

The phone doesn't really need root. Yeah, you miss out on a few apps and customization with gravity box....but there's little development, and stock is really nice.

You are making a good choice. I bought an S4 on sale as a gift and used it a bit myself, even with KitKat it is very slow, and all the features are gimmicks. The Moto X software features are all very useful.
I have both the non-slip and wood version. Personally, I think you should go with non-slip material. I think Royal Blue would be a very nice color. The wood backs are good to show off, but I don't think worth the extra cost, it also doesn't have that really smooth and comfortable feel of the nonslip material, which is much more comfortable to hold.
Well no root is a deal breaker for me to be honest. I mean how could I use apps like AdAway, Titanium, even the 8 step flashlight I use needs root, Adjustable torch i.e. Can't believe it doesn't have root.
Can't find any compact phones for human beings either, maybe Z1C is the only option left! Wish someone could turn me into a Dinosaur.

Get the Dev edition.... Or any model that can be unlocked.... As long as the radio bands work on your network.
Obviously you'd need to be able to sim unlock too.... so not a sprint model.
I am sorry what? I am in India, and here there are no locked phones! All phones are unlocked to work on any GSM network. This is the link from where I was gonna buy, if it matters in anything,

HI there,
I went into the ATT store and saw the backs they had for the MotoMaker colors were like a bad case in my hand...but I like the feel of the black and white model phones they have...so how do the MotoMaker models feel in comparison to the woven backs?
As far as I know, they are all smooth and soft touch. Mine has the woven black back and it is smooth and soft touch, just like all the demo backs at the AT&T store.

I noticed the softer colors felt slicker, not as "rubbery". I prefer the grippiness myself

Really? I thought they all felt the same. The only one that felt different to me was the white display model, it didn't have any soft touch coating at all but I think that was deliberate with the display models for whatever reason.

Well, that's the soft touch coating for you. When the phone is all put together it feels ultra premium. Even more so than the HTC One, IMHO.

Are you saying the lighter green models are smooth or that they have soft touch? I was thinking about the mint back, but MotoMaker said it was smooth. Are these similar to, say the S4, in terms feel?

They're much higher quality than the plastic used in the S4. The back is soft touch with a matte finish to it, so its nice and grippy. Feels great in the hand, like a made-to-order suit.

So if you go to motomaker, the ones that are listed as "smooth finish; made of scratch resistant material" are smoother, whereas the "soft non slip finish; made of scratch resistant material" have soft touch similar to the Nexus 4 edges
The soft touch shows fingernail markings until it heals, but are obviously grippier..

Oh wow, I just went to Motomaker to check that out. I guess in my excitement to order the phone I didnt realize the different colored backs have different finishes. It looks like the darker colors all have soft touch finishes and the brighter colors are all smooth. They all say scratch resistant which is good. Thats good to know. Thanks
I went ahead and got the Crimson, I'll let you know how it feels in my pa-hands.
Hi guys!
I am in need of advice from you owners of the phone.
At the moment i have a galaxy nexus, and it kind of has done its job, so i was thinking of changing it with the moto X 2014.
My priorities are materials, dimensions and price. That's what brought me here.
The main reason i'm in doubt is because i've found an online website selling the white version, bamboo back, at 349 euros, which is a great price; but i'm more into the black front, which can be found on other websites, with the plastic back, at 430ish euros.
The question is: bamboo and lower price or plastic and higher price? Is the bamboo back really worth it? How does the plastic feel?
I've seen as many video reviews as can be found. Some say the bamboo feels fantastic, some say it looks like a sticker and gets easily scratched. What do you guys think?
On the other hand the plastic is said to have a good feel and not look like cheap plastic at all.
What is your opinion on this?
What's your opinion of the phone after a while using it? Would you reccomend it?
Thanks in advance, have a good day everyone ^^
check if both are the same capacity i.e 16 GB vs 32 GB has a considerable price differnece.
A lot of people have complained about the wood peeling off. It looks nice, but I have serious doubts about its durability. The soft touch plastic actually has a great feel to it, but aside from black I don't know what other colors have the soft touch. My first one was soft touch black but I exchanged it for black leather, which I absolutely love.
As far as my overall opinion of the phone goes- it's amazing. I've tried all the other flagship phones and there is no doubt in my mind that the X is the best smartphone on the market right now. Get it, you won't be disappointed.

X 2014
I just purchased the Moto X 2014 Pure Edition (64gb). I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy S4 GPE which boasts a bigger, removable battery and removable storage. What drew me to this phone was the built in motorola software and the "OK Google" functionality. Overall I'm finding the battery to be a little lack luster; it doesn't hold up like my S4. However, the processor is quick and snappy, and the device overall has, in my opinion, a nice fit and finish. I purchased the black back with the dark silver accents. The phone has a nice weight, and it doesn't feel like it will fly out of my small hands like some lighter phones do. The metal on the rim and the black standard back are also both pleasing to the touch. The back plastic is almost soft to the touch; it isn't your standard shiny plastic. My fiancé has the previous generation Moto X with the dark wood back; one important thing to keep in mind, you're probably going to have this in a case to protect it. This renders the wood completely pointless in my opinion, even with a clear backed case. The OS takes up a fair amount of space, and I would recommend getting the most storage you can afford given that you can't expand it down the road. This phone, unlike the previous model, does not feel cheap in any way. I would easily group it in with S4-S5 quality.
I would encourage you to consider a phone with a bigger battery if you plan to fuss with it regularly throughout your day, or if you don't have a desk job where you can just leave it plugged in. But, otherwise, it's a great little phone with superb software, and I am fairly pleased with it thus far.
Here's my take.... I too had a Galaxy Nexus and then switch to the 2013 Moto X Developer Edition. Loved the Nexus with Paranoid Android. Loved the '13 X and its similar size.
Then I broke my '13 X and got upgraded to the "14 X Pure Edition with a Bamboo back. I have to say that it looks and feels really good. Of course its going into a case, but a clear TPU one. Just got the replacement in today and unlocking the boot loader tonight.
I'd say its a pretty decent phone if you don't mind the on screen buttons. I'm sure you mind coming from a Nexus. By the way, the radio in this phone is way better than Galaxy S4 that I previously owned too.

Yep, that was my first one, it was gorgeous. The only reason why I swapped it for a leather one was because my buddy was twisting my arm.
I have a white bamboo and a base model black on black. I have had no issues with the bamboo peeling or scratching. I'm actually on my 3rd bamboo phone because I had a clumsy week and broke a couple screens. none of them had peeling issues. I like the bamboo and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I love it. the black plastic one is scratched and marred on the back already and IMO is not as scratch resistant as the wood. I left my real camera at work, but I will post pics tomorrow so you can see what I mean.
I have a bamboo one with a black front and love it. I briefly had an S5 but got bored of it as it was to similar to my old phone (S3) so sent it back. The Moto X is a real head turner with the bamboo back and so far I've had no issues with it peeling or scratching and don't use a case.
Regarding the battery I do charge the phone every night but that seems pretty standard with smart phones. Also I've noticed someone at my work who has a HTC M8 and she is charging hers at least once every day, I never need to do this.
Plus also you can get a turbo charger for the moto x which charges the phone ridiculously fast, so its win, win.

i understand the fear of peeling, but i don't know why wood gets such a bad wrap. if plastic was so tough we'd make houses out of it, but we use wood for a good reason, from the framing to the floor. i make signs for a living. same thing. people come in here not wanting wood because they think it won't last. Outdoors, the MDO plywood signs i make last about 15 years before they even start to show their age. Outdoor plastic signs i make get brittle, crack, warp, and discolor after about two. What i'm saying seems consistent with this picture of two 5 month old phones

That comparison doesn't really work. The wood on the x is veneer, and it's the adhesive that's failing. If it was a thick piece of wood, I wouldn't question its durability, but it is super thin, probably around .5mm. No house is built from wood that thin.

Hello,
I am going to buy a nexus 6 next week or so, I have some doubts, any help will be appreciated
1) The screen is amoled, I am using a galaxy s3 and I can see some screen-burn in on it near the status bar area ( a distinct rectangle) i.e. the whole status bar is burned into the display. Are any of you facing any such issues on your devices? As the n6 has on screen nav bar it is more likely to burn in, Many people on youtube were complaining about the burn in? how common is it? is it a major issue?
2) I read that the back panel falls off, is that true? I mean the back panel is just glued in so it can come off and I saw people posting videos and writing articles about it.. Does that happen? or is it just because of puffed batteries on some faulty devices?
3) I can go for the note 4 (snapdragon) or wait for the S6 to release... But I am tired of samsung crap and their logo .. I would really love to use a nexus device , and specially a beast like n6. The burn in and back panel are my 2 major concerns.
4) I am thinking of midnight blue, cloud white may yellow over time or may get stained easily... I love cloud white tho, I am going to use a full TPU case... Really confused between these two.
Any inputs are appreciated. Thank you in advance
Just buy it.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Never had either issue and most people would say the same.
1) Yes I have very minor burn-in or image retention of my nav bar but not enough to truly make a difference
2) Has not happened to me
3) If you'll end up putting CM/Paranoid Android/AOSP based ROM. Just get a Nexus and save yourself the headache of dealing with Samsun Keis/Odin. Going from the S3 to the Nexus 4 was a relief in that sense
4) I have the Midnight Blue with a DBrand skin and plenty of cases
Overall, like mentioned above; “Just buy it." It's a great device!
I never understood why people care about what color the phone is if they're going to put a case on it anyway. Even if, for some reason, it changed color how would you know?
Do you want the latest greatest phone or do you want a phone that is easy to drop a custom ROM on and do what you like? If it's the latter pick the Nexus.

Burn-in takes a LOT of time. Samsuck software can make it happen easier than otherwise. Android 5 is less prone to this problem since the bar colors change frequently.

Not really any problem here. There is some concern that the quick charge may heat the battery more than it should, easy solution is to use a conventional 5 volt charger rather than the one it comes with.

Not sure I see any actual concerns here, rather this line appears to be fully supporting the Nexus. S6 is exynos, avoid it like the plague. These samsucks are also amoled, so this would certainly NOT help you with burn-in, if it could even be considered a problem.
4) I am thinking of midnight blue, cloud white may yellow over time or may get stained easily... I love cloud white tho, I am going to use a full TPU case... Really confused between these two.

Cannot help you with the color.
I can suggest that you do NOT buy a crappy TPU case. Those are basically the cheapest form of hard plastic, and will do absolutely NOTHING to protect your phone. I suggest a BALLISTIC TOUGH JACKET MAXX. Mine has been chewed and flung by a 16 month old boy. This is the case you want. Or if you want it to be slightly slimmer, get the non-MAXX version.
Nexus 6 it is for sure!. Will get the 32 gig midnight blue variant. Ofc I will be flashing CM12.. I know how exynos is a let down, and I want to stay away from samsung for a long long time. As far as cases are concerned, I am thinking about Ringke Fusion smoke OR Spigen Air bumper - Ultra hybrid (Gunmetal) case. The ringke one has a custom designer cutout for the back, so I can put some geeky designs and show off the back. Well, Thanks a lot to you all for the replies. Much appreciated.
Hi,
I'm looking for a new device, as my Note 1 looks like it's about to join the big charger in the sky.
I know the basics - large screen, good battery & processor, meh resolution etc. Judging form the specs and reviews I've read, it looks like a good fit for me.
What I'd like to know is if you'd recommend buying it for long term use (I'm not one to change phones every year), and if there are issues with the phone you think I should know about.
It's a great phablet. Fast, comfortable and bug free. Battery seems to last forerver. Feels solid yet slippery in the hand, and close to impossible to use one handed. You won't feel the difference made by the 720p resolution after a few hours. Color reproduction is great and the screen is sharp and bright.
Coming from the note 2, i see only 3 downsides In the flex.
1. The camera. Real slow to focus indoors, produces lots of noise in dark areas... Sometimes i cant determine where the focus point is. Perfect daylight and closeups though.
2. Lack of development. This phone is locked down tight, so if you love to flash like me, it's a disappointment.
3. No cases, no glass screen protectors. Almost. You can still find them around ebay and amazon, but not as much stuff a samsung would have.
On the bottom line this is a great mid-high range phone, and for the right price, and the right mind it will do.

Thanks!
I don't really care about the camera. The lack of development is a bummer. Might have been a deal breaker for me if it wasn't for Xposed.
Oh, one more thing - some users had an issue with ghosting or after images on the screen. Anyone had this problem? How widespread is it?

It really is a matter of luck... Some of the phones were bad from factory.. You have something like that, you'll get it replaced with your warrenty.
If you want to keep it long term and lack of updates (and also latest apps) will bug you then I suggest Nexus 6 over it. My dad has this phone and I have the nexus, dont get me wrong g flex is a nice phone but starting to fall back in technology and will likely not get updates for 2+ years
Just got my shiny new 128gb AT&T S6 Edge. Have a couple of hours to kill - feel free to ask me stuff!
I've got mine, but I'm curious does your front screen have scratch swirls all of it when you are in light?
Mine is scratched to hell on the front.
Any chance you want to attempt using CF-autoroot just in case Samsung ignored AT&T's request to lock? Figured I'd ask, despite the fact that there's virtually no chance.

No, none at all thankfully - posted some images on the scratch thread, seems picture perfect to me under all lighting conditions I've put it under so far!

Will try to do this later!
I received my black/128 today as well. Not a scratch in sight. So far loving it but still notice signs of lag. Coming from Moto X 2nd gen and HTC M9. However, it is far less than S5 and is worth it to have a great overall phone with superb camera (M9 was aweful)
How is the battery ? Could you post some pictures?

This is what I get for getting the 32GB version... should have just got the next higher one up. Seems the 32GB Edge is the only model with scratches being reported.

Well I don't blame you, the 128gb on ATT is frankly outrageously expensive.
My 128gb looks perfect.
How bad is the att bloat? Also did it come in Samsung packaging or the att boxes they have been doing in the past?
Mine appears to be just a regular Samsung box, not specifically AT&T. Also, mine doesn't have any scratches or swirls, I have the 128GB white. It's immaculate.

I've always been partial to the white phones. I'm not too keen on all the different colors. A crystal clear thinnest case available and white is my favorite. The new colors the have though are pretty nice. You'll be very happy with whatever you decide to get.

Samsung pay
Just got my White 32gb S6 edge..Not a scratch in sight! Wanted to ask you guys if you'll have heard anything about the samsung pay. The samsung rep from best buy told me sometime this summer and the live chat on the samsung website told me that its available on the S6 but not yet on the S6 Edge which doesn't make any sense!
For those of you who already have one, how does it feel to hold with the curved screen? It seems sexy as hell but I feel like it's really easy to accidentally touch the sides of the screen

It is sexy as hell! And actually only find the edges easier to grip and less slippy than the S6. So far I haven't had issues with accidental touches, and it makes swiping in side menus actually a pleasure. Some apps are also emerging that make the most of the curves which is even cooler.
ok
ok.....
Can't wait to get it!
Played with one in Costco, and I must say, just amazing! The screen is even better than my note 4, which is saying a lot! And the curves look sexy as hell! Mine will b off contract though, so I will more than likely end up getting the 64gb.
U guys should post some pics......
