[Q] Using a different charger. - One (M8) Accessories

Hey people. I just used a samsung charger to charge my phone and man! it took me less than 2hrs to charge it 18% to 100% its faster than the stock charger we get in the box. Is it harmful to use a different manufacturer's charger??

Slow battery charging, battery tips?

I'm a recently new owner of the note. One of the first things I noticed was battery issues.
First, it seems as though my battery charges exceptionally slow regardless of whether I charge through a mains outlet or my computer. There have been times when I am charging and playing a CPU-intensive game and my battery power actually goes down, and once as a test I brought my battery to 4% and then let it charge overnight, and woke up to it at 90%.
second, I am running it rooted on the stock rom (kk4 I think?) and I am wondering if there are any system tweaks that improve performance and battery life, such as build.prop modifications. I am not a new Android user so I already know about reducing brightness, managing push services, all that stuff.

Note takes almost 4 hours to charge 100%. i guess you are using original Note Charger. Try flashing any new kernel and new ROM.
So it's because of the original charger? I still have my Dell Streak charger that outputs through USB, and I remember if I charged through the mains it would go much faster, though I am unsure of it's safety. As long as it's USB there's no risk of it frying my note, is there?
I sort of want to hold off on flashing a new rom until ISC becomes available in a mostly-working state. I am sure there are a few entries in build.prop that all the custom roms use?

The only risk is Amperage. A Dell Streak wall wart spits out 5V DC at 1A current. I use the very same to charge my Note, with no issues at all. I am unsure what the stock Note wall wart spits out as, to be honest, I never took it out of the packet. I would hazard a guess that it would be identical to the Galaxy S II charger at 0.7A, though. This would explain the slower charging rate you're noticing.
It may be a purely superstitious thing on my part, but I never charge mobile devices with anything over 1A of current unless they specifically require it.
I have a 2A wall wart at home that did crazy things to an old Desire (warmed the back very noticeably and subsequently impaired the battery's ability to hold charge). It's for this reason I stick to 1A, plus I find it quick enough for my liking.

I use the stock charger. It is 1A. It also charges quite slowly compared to some. There is a lot of juice needed to fill the Note's battery. Unlike some 1200 or 1600 mAh, it takes 2600 mAh. That takes time, is all.

BTW using the Note, especially for gaming, can drain the battery faster than the charger tops it up. It appears the Note does not (or cannot?) draw anything from the power input to leave the battery to charge. The result is not a good or fast charge IMO.
I would not recommend doing this often as it tends to stuff up the metrics and give false readings in my experience.

Your second point especially is very valid. This wouldn't be the first device unable to 'keep up' with juice demands while flat out

Personally, I prefer a slow charge to a fast charge. Less chance of heating up the battery.
A 2 amp charger can charge the note slightly faster (the iPad charger for example)

not sure how is that, all i can tell you is that i compared charging from 0 to 100 with the original charger and with a 2 amp one. Original charging time was 3:35, while the time with the 2 amp charger was just under 3 hours.
Remember also that a standard USB 2.0 port allows a max of 0.5A: "A device may draw a maximum of 5 unit loads (500 mA) from a port in USB 2.0" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus
So when you charge the note using a PC (or a MAC) the process takes twice as long compared with wall charger. And if you're using the Note during the charge usually it won't charge at all, because it requires more power than it is supplied by USB port.
The note uses a Summit smb136 to charge... That chip can handle up to 1400mA in, and 1500mA to the battery. I don't have my Note yet to tinker much with the kernel sources, but I've worked with this chip on the galaxy tab 7.0 Plus (and have it doing some interesting things.)
Examining the source, it appears that the chip is being limited to 950mA from the wall charger and 500mA from all other sources. Depending on how it's detecting the charge source, it's likely limiting to 500mA for all "unknown" charging sources. (I'll investigate that after I've had the note for a couple days and get a feel for it.)
It should be easy enough to modify the kernel to allow more power draw from iphone/ipad chargers... and even to open up USB charging some more (but there's a risk involved with drawing too much current from a source than isn't designed for it. I've killed a netbook's usb port that way.)

We all know that charging with the stock charger is very very slow so i was wondering if i can use a charger that outputs A) 5.2V/2.4A B) 5.1V/2.1A C) 5.0V/1.2A these are all charger that i have which one is the best to use without damaging the battery ????
none, as long as the charger your using isnt weaker than the stock charger, it'll make no difference. Having a 2amp charger might produce more current, but the phones going to accept only what its programmed for, which is what the stock charger outputs.
Its safest to use the stock charger with the stock cable, and if your phones fairly new, don't worry, charging speeds up after a week or two.

Phone has power supply control chip that limits the maximum charging current (1A in case of HTC One). Unlike fast USB charging maximum charging current is not something that is possible to be changed from any software.

Samsung Charger better than LG's

Hey everyone
Just want to ask if anybody noticed the same as me regarding the charger of LG:
if I plug the charger and use the phone it heats up really fast and charging speed is slow. The heat slows down my 4X HD and the performance is sh*tty as hell.
I once forgot my charger an used one from my dad's Samsung and I noticed a incredible difference. No heating at all and it charges much faster (with LG over night ~ 8 hours sometimes not even fully loaded from 15%, with Samsung 4-5 hours full with YouTube use and other minor things).
When I use my phone while plugged with LG charger it often even drains some battery (2-3% in 20 mins discharge, then charge up to 5% in the same time and so on).
Have anybody got the same "problems" or has my charger maybe a hardware failure?

Weird. My phone charges from 0%-80% in like 1 hour, then the last 20% tend to take while longer. But also if I "Overcharge" it (that is to say charge it for about 2 hours when it's still 100%) it feels like it has charged 110%. Cause it takes forever to go down to 99% but then it decreases faster.
This is with the included LG charger. If I use my samsung (which is like 500mah) it takes longer.
I don't experince any performance decrease when charging.

Are you on stock rom or on a custom rom? I'm on WerewolfJB and that's maybe why it heats up but the faster charging with the Samsung charger is really noticeable, especially when I use the phone, like I said.

I'm on a AOSP rom (Slimbean). But I do share your experience with heat, both on the phone and the charger itself. But I think it's due to the high currency.
Your charger could just be broken. LG charger's output current is rated at 1.2A which means that the battery should be charged from 0% to 100% in about 1 h 45 min. It could take longer if the charging current gets smaller when the battery is starting to get full.

wrong, "charger" is not current source

I had an issue that CPU was always 760mhz while charging with zen+HYPER governors. RevoltJB+OP kernel 2.53.
Noticed that my raspberry charger(2A) was faster than LG stock charger. Also normal for me too that battery even decreases while using phone at charger.

there is maximum allowed current to charge phone. it is controlled by electronics inside the phone. if you are using charger that has bigger maximum current it is possible that phone battery is faster charged, but as i said, it depends on interior charging circle
Charging Current 101
To clarify the above responses:
The LG charger *should* be more than adequate to charge the handset, as that is what it was designed to do....
If you were to use a different charger, e.g. one from another phone or a shop bought replacement, then the maximum output current of the charger is an important factor: the lower the rating (in mA or A) the slower the charge and therefore the longer it will take. Using the phone whilst charging will also increase the charge time as you are using the battery whilst charging it (like filling the bath with the plug out), more so with apps that load the graphics processor (GPU) such as youtube or games as these are battery intense tasks.
The rate at which the battery charges is ultimately decided by the handset; most modern phones will fast-charge most of the way, then slow charge the last few % to avoid overheating and damaging the battery, so having a charger rated to, say, 2.4A (or 2400mA) does not mean the battery will charge twice as fast as one rated at 1.2A as the phone dictates how much current it needs.
That will either clear up a lot of questions or will mean nothing at all

Same. Charging here is very fast overall.

Charging time?

Is it just my device or does this thing charge super slow? I can't even get a full charge in a hour and a half and the battery is only 410mah.
Do you use original AC Adapter? I use another one now and I can get it charged in 45 minutes, which is ok to me.

bad battery
I have been having really bad battery on this yesterday left it a home with a full charge at 9.0am and today at 7.30am had 11% it had screen always off and it had not been touched thinking of send it a off to LG to be looked at

I would advise against doing this. You will shorten the battery life due to the extra heat produced. Always use a lower amp charger unless you are in a rush!

Can someone tell me how long the actual charging time exactly takes ?
I use the original charger that comes with the device and it takes about 3 to 4 hours to fully charge the watch.
I find that quite long as I read the comments here.
The first tames it takes only 1,5 hours to charge it but all the other times it goes real slow.
A factory reset didn't help to resolve this issue.

As far as i remember battery have a capacity 410mAh, original charger have power output 700mAh, so charging time should be about 40-45 minutes max.
Change usb cable, if it doesn't help change charger (but it should have power output >700mAh)
PS. AFAIK using charger with power output >700mAh is harmless because watch limits charging current by itself.
Measuring charging time is best indicator.
Charging with 2.0A adapter will not increase the charging speed - the watchregulates the charging current, it will not just blindy "connect" the charger to the battery (in fact, I can't think of any piece of electronics that would have the charging logic in the adapter nowadays).
I had no problems with any chargers, not even with USB charging - the battery is very small, so unless you have a charger that can't put even 500mA you should have no problem.
I've seen an issue where the watch was "charging" constantly and ended with 85% and wouldn't charge anymore - reboot fixed that and it showed 100%.
I was thinking that your charge takes so long because you could have some process draining your battery in the meanwhile (that starts when you connect your phone, like a tasker thing or smt). Newbie thoughts so correct me if this is impossible
I could try to do a factory reset and see after that if it charges much faster then now.
For the moment i have a few apps on the watch, i do not know if it matters or not for to influence the charging time.
It's weird that we do not have the ability to load the watch while it is off.
From the moment that i put it on the charger it turns on automatically !

It makes not more sense to use a Adapter with 2.0 A Output. It won't charge faster.
Look if every pin on your dock is ok.
also the connection pin on your watch.
Try to clean a little bit with high percentage alcohol.

Problem solved by using another USB cable.
Now fully charged in 1,5 till 2 hours.
I haven't measured the charging time of my watch but it looks to me pretty fast. I guess with original charger 30 mins - 45 max, not a min more.

Hi,
that statement isn't particularly correct. The charging system in the watch (as with any LiIon battery) will draw as much current as is "good for it" and no more.
Just because a charger offers 2A doesn't mean that this is the amount of current flowing through the charger / battery!

[Q] Quick Charge 2.0

So yesterday I bought a 2.0 charger off of amazon with the choe brand name. According to the ad it works with nearly every android phone, including the HTC one m8. For the past year I have been using a charger from my last phone which was a crappy flip phone and thought nothing of it, but I am wondering does this charger truly work?? According to app "Ampere" it is much slower. Also, I've read reports about phones heating up and that's what mine did last night, is that normal? How long should it take for me to full charge my HTC one m8?
It will heat up, that is normal. It'll use most of its 2.4A between 20 and 70% and then slow down. Your total charge time shouldn't take more than 1 hour, and make sure you're using the supplied cable.

no I wouldn't say that.
my 2.0 QC will get it done in about 1-2 hours compared to the 3-5 or so it took with stock charger.
0-100% will take more than an hour. I've timed mine a few times from 0-100%, not using the phone at all and in airplane mode waking it up every 5 minutes to check percentage, volts, and charge rate using Gsam batt monitor.
Comparing the two chargers (OEM HTC QC 2.0, and original HTC charger- which I believe is QC 1.0) the QC 2.0 is definitely faster. Even though there is nothing on the phone telling you it is using the higher wattage charging mode, it is. So, 0 to 100% using HTC's QC2, usually takes around 1:20 minutes if I remember right. As in the other post, it starts out rather slow to around 20%, then kicks in to high gear until around 80%, then slows back down all the way to 100% so as to not overcharge the battery and harm it. It really is amazing the speed that it charges at. It does get rather warm, which is normal, but shouldn't hurt the phone.
Now, completely draining and recharging these batteries frequently is not good for them and will decrease the useful life sooner. Keeping it somewhere around 80 % is ideal but realistically not practical and the manufacturers know that. That's why they build in overcharge circuitry protection so leaving the charger on all the time "shouldn't" harm the battery. Draining it down to zero and doing a full recharge cycle on it frequently WILL decrease the lifespan. The batterie's useful life is basically determined by a finite number of charge cycles.

Anyone heard of the brand Auzen? It's popping up alot on aliexpress and around asian market. Not too much reviews yet on that brand.
don't play with quick chargers .I bloated my m8 batt once trying it .it charge at 2.4a .our device max is 1.5a.
If you insist using it then don't full charge with it n monitor closely .
That's impressive, I use a QC2.0 car charger, I use a variety of wall chargers that run from 1.0A to 2.3A at 5V.
So far, my battery is still very happy.
Sounds like you got a cheap knock off charger or your battery/charging circuitry was damaged/faulty and/or your ROM/firmware weren't proper, for that kind of damage to occur.
I don't think Ampere works. I once did a test (last month) and had 6 different USB cables and I wanted to see which was the best, every time I used one I got a different reading, from 200 up to 1600. Even using my Anker Quick Charge 2.0 I only got 400 so it stated.
I have been using Aukey QuickCharge 2.0 and gives pretty decent charge times.
I have a QUICK Changer 2.0. works great.. have some tips...
You know there is some colors on cable conectors ends you have to choose the right one..
- If the cable is not a quality one can result to slow charging.
Black ----- 1.0. most in stock phones
White------ 2.0. the right for fast charging...
The time on reaching 100% on battery,well Quickly charger 2.0 will reach 80% on your battery fast and it will change the next 20% slower...
There is some app in playstore can help can see the amperage live in mA..
Connect your charger to get the battery charging current or disconnect it and get the negative discharging current... and you can see your battery charging current mA is constantly changing because even on charging phone still using current (negative discharging current) and this is always changing.
On my case I see higher mA reading only under really low battery...
I have a problem with my m8 and aukey 2.0 quick charger....
After firmware update to 6.12.xxx.xxx mm , the app ampere tell me max 1600ma before update its tell 2000ma .. Its a bug or a feature of the new firmware base...??? I have cyanogenmod 13

M8 is 1.5a max .if you use 2.0a logically you're overcharging it. Just wait for it to get bloat n replace the whole bat. worth it ?
Hi, i just wanted to say something. After many bad chargers i bought, i found the Nillkin chargers (2Amps)and Nillkin cables (2.1Amp) the best and best quality. I am always testing with good Usb voltage tester and it can charge up to 1.5 amps max on M8 and on LG G3 1.8 Amps. As long as the charger is 5.0V, amps can variate and it doesnt hurt your battery, it just charges slower or faster. In my case its charging 1% per minute on both phones. It doesn't matter if the cable is black, white, green... cables must be thick, around 18AWG that support high ampers which mean faster charging. thin cables are sh!#. And for car i also found the Scosche dual charger great for every device with Nillkin 30cm cables and Kenu airframe holder.
You can use 2.4A chargers on M8 without problem as it will only receive 1.5amps.

That logic is incorrect. The phone will only draw as many amps as its rated for (1.5 amps) regardless of what the charger is rated to supply. Think of the charger amp rating as the "maximum it can supply" instead of "what it will always supply".

Ampere shows max charge rate for me at 2000ma. Where do you get the idea it will overcharge?
