droid 4 water resistance?

hi, i was wondering how water resistant the droid 4 is. i remember one of the selling points for the droid 4 on motorola's website was that it was water resistant. but is it take in the shower water resistant, or just a few drops of water?
also, i heard that there was some kind of coating you could spray on your phone to make it waterproof, does anyone know what its called? i also know there is a company out there that waterproofs phones, but i cant remember the name of it either.

The Droid 4 isn't weather-sealed or otherwise resistant to water any more than other high-end smartphones. If you dribble a bit of water on it, you probably won't kill it, but definitely don't go taking it in the shower or texting in the pool.
I forget what that company is that applies the waterproofing coating too... google around though.

the water resistant coating isn't very reliable.
if you want to use it around water, get a water proof case/bag

Kindy funny subject lol. I remember my cousin threw his old phone straight into the pool just to show off and his phone worked fine but it also wasn't a droid 4. I wouldn't advise go anywhere near the water with your nice D4 ha ha.

I know this is an old thread but i had to throw in my two cents. i was recently riding my bike back from the bar and took "evasive action" and fell into a pond... it was about waist deep and i was fully submerged for a second or two with my droid 4 in my jeans pocket. when i clambered out i immediately took it out and my friend dried it off... worked fine. it is "splash proof" meaning it shouldn't get hurt from occasionally getting a little water on it from sources like walking in a light rain, or washing your hands without submerging it.
It is most defiantly not water proof, do not submerge it under water, it will die.

Yes what Milimbar said. Don't bath, or swim with it.
Some users report the camera fogging up after getting wet.

there was a post some time ago from a guy that left it on accidentally in the shower and it had no damage but i woudlnt recommend that

I accidentally submerged mine while cleaning the fish tank pump. I nearly pooped when I did it but quickly shook off the water and it came out unharmed. Admittedly, I didnt go trying to take pictures afterward but the next day, the camera seemed fine too. That was two months ago and haven't had an issed or another serious accident.

This is pretty specific and precise it seems to me. Not sure what the OP is unclear about.
From the IP55 rating, no, it is not suitable for full immersion for any length of time, nor is it protected at any depth.
Rather -- again just from the description above -- you can hit it with a stream of water for minutes at a time, from all different angles, and it will be fine.
IOW, no problem with getting it wet. Yes problem with immersion.

Does anyone swim with their S5?

So, I just got this s5 and decided to take the water resistancs to a new level.
I first ended up going to Cedar Point Amusement park, and went to the water park with it. Took a few video's with it on the slides, etc. Then went to the Wavepool , kept in my pock so it was no more then a few feet under water at any time.
Worked great, phone was still working. Just an FYI, if you do use it underwater, your signal strength will die, no cell signal underwater guys, I first thought the phone fried, but then relized, that was the issue, and then in a min, 4G was back! (I was freaked when I realized my pebble told me I was not connected.) Played with my Sphero for a bit.
a week later, I was at a festival doing some shooting, I was invited to the pool, with all the drugged up artists ,.. They all thought I was on every drug known to man because I brought my phone in the pool to take pictures (a few under water ones too!)
So far so good. I will admit that the phone at no time was fully submerged for more then 5 or 10 min at a time. but the phone still works great, and just needs a rince and dry to get the touch screen to work nomaly again.
so far, I'm not afraid!. I got the Samsung wireless back, I know it's got the seal, so that one is next! this week!

To me it's a "just in case feature" lol... "just in case I..."

I left my phone in a bowl of water for an hour the first day I got it and everything is still fine.

You all have taken playing with your phone to a whole new level. Maybe I can see testing Samsung's numbers, but who in their right mind is going to intentionally search for the time where the phone actually drowns?

my theory, is if I am going to actualy do long swimming with it, I will put it my waterproof bag, but jumping into the pool for a quick jaunt, playing with my Sphero, or a waterslide where my phone is not UNDER water for more then a few min at a time, I will risk it.
I never keep phones long enough anyways.

Chlorine will destroy your waterproof capabilities.

Also your speaker will get saturated and sound like crap - eventually the phone will have a weak speaker resulting in popping/crackling sounds. Just FYI...You can take pictures and the phone can get wet but if your doing it everyday of summer, bad things could happen. I think the Active can do it better than the reg S 5, but I wont go swimming with it. Maybe take pictures once in a while in the pool.

? Makes No sense to me but hey i dont have a silver spoon in my mouth. Even if i could i woulnt cause its a waist of good hardware. Maybe everyone should be poor once in thier life and would appreciate things more.

I highly doubt the chlorine content in a public pool is high enough to cause the waterproof seals on the S5 to deteriorate.

It's probably not high enough to break the seal, yes, but your headphone jacks are being exposed to chlorine, as are your speakers. Filtered water at home wouldn't corrode the equipment as fast since... well that's chlorine's job, you're not drinking chlorinated water at home. But yeah, the speakers and headphone jack aren't directly part of the board if I'm correct, instead they are attatched to it (I suck at explaining things, bear with me please) by the looks of it, probably explaining why you can buy the headphone jack and speakers separately as replacement parts instead if the whole board. The reason why the slip is on the charging port is to protect the board, which is in more cases a lot more important than sound equipment. I hope I explained that generally well for no sleep in 36 hours. :laugh:

and some people take the risk and deal with the consequences. I have taken the phone in the pool, and when I am done, I do clean it off, do I plan on doing it on a regular basis, NO, I only did it because I was thinking, I had 30 days to return this phone if it explodes, so I took the risk, in general, If I ever do plan on going to the pool in the future, I have a waterproof bag that I use.
Now the shower, man, is nice to change the song and see whats playing. but I don't submerge it.
Long story short, I was asking for outcomes, I was not asking if anyone was a spoiled brat, had more money then god, did't care if the phone exploded or whatever, those are just troll answers, I was looking for experiences of people willing to take risks, what their device's outcome was, not their financial outcome.
and about chlorine and the seals, that is a legit concern, just like salt in salt water pools. I did not think of that, and this is why i asked.

Water + electricity = busted ****. Common sense. And when the first battery does explode (not 100% on if the battery will do this) from taking into elements they have no business being in I'm sure someone will jump on some lawsuit even though it was there fault cause we all know water and electricity go so well together.

What? The phone is built to withstand a certain degree of water, hence the iP67 rating, I don't underatand why you are jumping to these astronomically implausible conclusions.
I don't know if you have seen the videos on YouTube but the S5 is highly resistant to water, even more so than the IP67 rating would lead you to believe.
Batteries can explode from various things, sitting too long can cause them to puff up, a direct impact/force can also cause it to explode.
Water+Electricity is bad but telling people their battery will explode if their S5 encounters water is simply doing a disservice to them. There are limits to the S5's water resistance as there are limits to many other things in life, we respect those limits and stay within the designated "safe" boundaries. There is no difference with the S5, respect the limits of the water resistance and continue enjoying the feature.

The battery exploding is more or less hypothetical as I said I wasn't a 100% and furthermore like I said water and electricity don't mix. One little flaw in you precious waterproof seals and poof your phones done. I myself have noticed just from charging my phone the USB flap is already loose so no I would not trust submerging my phone in water at any depth. and as for the waterproof rating i would think that applies to things like getting caught in the rain on your phone or dropping it in the toilet and ouickly removing it. Not jumping in a pool or going scuba diving and taking pictures underwater. Purposely Taking your phone into water or any other liquid is just STUPID it's water resistant not watertight or waterproof. Do with your phone what you will I just hate seeing hardware abused even if it is not mine. Sorry if this upsets anyone just my opinion.

The IP67 rating means Ingress Protection, the S5 in this case is 100% Dust proof as it has the highest value on the scale for dust resistance. The 2nd number in which the S5 has a 7 means water resistant at depths of up to 1m for up to 30 minutes, there is only one level above the S5's rating. This rating is given based on standardized testing so assuming you follow the specified limits and make sure your port covers are sealed, you should be fine taking your device with you in up to 1m of water.
Regarding the loosening of the port cover, that is a major point of concern. My port cover is still very tight fitting but I am have been extremely cautious in making sure it stays at 90° from the opening and doesn't bend in any other direction as to not weaken the flap.

Yea the flap is what has me believing it shouldn't be submerged. Say your sitting poolside and drop ur phone in, Yea it's good to have the iP67 rating but just from removing the USB flap to charge i would throw that rating out the window. It's loose

[q] help water damaged s5

i just bought mine and i took it for a test in the pool and took pics and video and i opened to see if water got inside and yes some drops where inside but not in the important area so i dry it close it BUT it seems that it got water inside somehow cuz :crying::crying::crying::crying:l later i try to see the pics and the screen went wild and then the horror screen went from white to black and that was it i try to dry it with hairdryer nothing i came back to live for a sec only to do the same then the rice trick nothing now is all black i can hear the phone respond but no image and im in despair since att told me warranty is void cuz the water indicator is red so im f up. Can someone help me out with some miraculous fix for this problem please i just bought it and im beyond broke. I got isopropyl alcohol if i dunk it without the battery of course will the acohol damage the amoled lcd or the camera or anything? if i dry it well will it come back to life or will the lcd digiticer permanetly dead ? HELP ME OUT HERE PLEASE:crying::crying::crying:

Why 2 posts about the same issue. Sounds like you have your answer. Your phone is busto so unless you wanna go as far as replacing the screen yourself which will probably not resolve all your issues. Stop swimming with your phone :banghead:

Is the water damage strip tripped on both the phone and battery? I did the same thing with mine but luckily only the battery strip was tripped so I just ordered a new battery and Told the store the screen stopped working all of a sudden dodged a bullet on that one

Only the back of the phone the battery one is ok. Where can i get another water indicator to replace the one on the phone. If i dunk the phone on isopropyl alcohol will the screen or digitiser die? Thank in advance

The phone is advertised as "Water Resistance" not "Water Proof".....SO if your wife or kids spill something on it or you drop it in a pool and get it out quickly, you should be okay......If you put it in the pool and played with it (Took pictures etc...) Thats a NO NO.....
It seems you had your S5 in the pool, having fun and now its damaged. I did the same thing with my S 5 at first. I took it in the pool and took pictures under water, and had fun. The speaker sounded like it had water all in it, but after it dried up, the speaker was fine. So is my phone.
But the S 5 Active is rated i believe 30 Minutes, up to 3 feet. SO there is the problem----you have the regular S 5 and its dead bro.....
You need a new phone. I don't think anybody has a fix for water damage. It burnt up some thing inside. I hate to say it , but you will have to get another one. I learned a lesson and hopefully others did by our stories.

Ya mine was on the battery so I could replace the battery yours is on the phone not sure how you would replace that I think you might be out of luck my friend

I can't believe everyone is telling this guy he's SOL. Yes it was a silly thing to do but who hasn't made a mistake?
Jsong, the rice trick takes weeks typically to work, helps if you can get it in direct sunlight as well to speed up the absorption rate. I would suggest giving the rice trick a try again but leave it untouched for a week or two. DO NOT USE A HAIRDRYER, you've already stated that you have but don't again. The force of the air could push moisture deeper and make the issue worse. Take out the SIM, the battery and external memory card if you have one. Vacuum the exposed area for at least 30 minutes, change up the angle of the vacuum every little while to make sure you are reaching all exposed parts. Put the dry cover back on, do not try and turn it on. Now put it in the rice and some say 24-hours works but I would leave it for at least a week. If it won't turn on after a week in the rice and the vacuuming you may need to think about replacing the motherboard which I don't think anyone sells. If you do manage to get ahold of one or any part you want to replace use the guide here to tear it down and fix yourself. https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Samsung_Galaxy_S5

OK im getting a little irritated with this kind of comment that show only the lack of knowledge the S5 normal is IP67 as the active the difference is that the active beside the IP67 has some military test of its own so both phone can be submerged up to 1 meter and up to 30 min there is no difference there OK and yes if i buy a phone thats says it can do that WHY would i do it its like if i buy a water resistant watch or whatever if it says it can be submerged up to 15 meter im gonna swim with it im NOT scuba diving because it will die. OK im getting a little irritated with this kind of comment that show only the lack of knowledge the S5 normal is IP67 as the active the difference is that the active beside the IP67 has some military test of its own so both phone can be submerged up to 1 meter and up to 30 min there is no difference there OK and yes if i buy a phone thats says it can do that WHY would i do it its like if i buy a water resistant watch or whatever if it says it can be submerged up to 15 meter im gonna swim with it im NOT scuba diving because it will die. So, if I purposely crash my car into a building, and I'm laying in my hospital bed, and I say, well if the air bag worked like it was supposed to, then I would not be in this predicament, how would I sound? You'd probably say, well why would you do that anyway? There are some things that you do not do, you'd probably say. That's kind of how you sound with taking the phone swimming, but not that degree.
Well, maybe the phone was faulty. But what service center or tech is going believe you after you've blow dried it, and possibly soaked it in rice or alcohol. If you did any of that, then that throws out the entire argument about the phone being at fault, since the blow dryer, alcohol, and rice are not tested and proven procedures, or "following security measure", for the S5. I'm just saying what you need, but don't want, to hear.
And you're right also, there is a lack of knowledge around here about S5. In my opinion, it takes somewhere around a year before you understand a phone really well. That's why you don't do like you did, because almost no one around here has been in that situation yet, where they had to find a solution. That's why there's no definite answer right now and...Oops, I have to go. I have to get my phone out the sink before the 30 minutes is up. Let us know what you decide to.

The Active and the S5 both have the same IP67 certification for water ingress protection. so NO the Active is not any better under water. And in the case of the OP he just got back lock and was not sure that the back cover was completely close. I have use my S5 on the pool several times to take videos and pictures without issues, you just need to be sure of the usb flap and back case been secured.

I just remember a rep asking if I wanted insure for 3 bucks. Once I got my paperwork it was higher. I asked why. They told me about an additional insurance fee. I didn't need it. Took it off and it's 3 bucks again. Don't remember what it was but I didn't want it. Srry

You mean the 30min underwater commercial didn't convince you it was water proof? LOL...Gonna be hard to get that replaced. I would put it in a ziplock bag of dry rice for 24hr, couldn't hurt....good luck

Once the phone is jostled, the internal air pressure is messed with, and water actually first enters the device. You can tell as the headphone jack finally has air bubbles coming from it. This is true with any phone with a decent seal on it. Its not water proof or resistant by ANY means. As soon as liquid gets in, the phone starts to die. Because it's not water resistant. Go figure.
And then to top it all off, that ****tard plugs the USB into a wet charging port and wonder why it shorts and burns. Christ...
So yeah, in summary: This has been posted a bunch of times already, and it's a total load of horse****. The phone isn't water resistant at all.

Pro-tip: Don't whip out your phone when taking a piss.

Don't fall for the hype!
A device "protected" by this quackery will still succumb to water intrusion damage.
The demos are using de-ionized water.
Real life liquids are full of ions.
Bad things will happen.
The only way to waterproof a device is to keep water on the outside, period!

The phone isn't waterproof AT ALL it's simply sealed well. Same crap when the M8 first came out.

I like to think i have a reasonable approach to any manufacture's claims; either
1) Test it if they claim "proof" (i do this with every IPX8 flashlight i buy)
2) Or, if i am at all dubious about the claim, assume it is at least one to two levels below the claim, and treat it as such.
If they are honest and say that its not proof, i am really going to believe them, and act accordingly.
