If you can't find a use for a watch that sends and receives phone calls, text messages, emails, can play games, calculate, countdown, set alarms, reminders, has a calendar, take pictures/videos, display pictures/videos, control media (music), count daily steps, post to Facebook/Twitter, or many many other things you can imagine, you're not very open minded or creative. The watch is probably glad you sold it.

Have you all noticed that Facebook, twitter, and other networks try to take over the world? Facebook in skyfire now, facebook is everywhere with "like" buttons, Social Networks are forced by freaking Motoblur, people reporting each their step: "I just ate Icecream!" "I just saw some weird dude." "People what to do? I got a ticket!"
Get your butt out of the computer/cellphone and go to the beach watch a sunset! Let your brain free for at least a moment!
While checking email in the morning, I see hundreds of posts from people about what they did on a hourly basis.
So pathetic. After all this I really want to delete facebook and add it to all possible filters.
What is your opinion of such invasion and zombification?
I say xda is better than facebook...

I agree, but they are not taking over the world, they are taking over people who are stupid enough to think that facebook is their life.
+1!
Completely agree.

Its strange how people used to share things such as photos, and sentimental things in real life. And now people cant wait to upload to facebook.
I must confess i'm a twitter addict though (hopefully not in the: "i'm eating a sandwich kinda way")
It's only a fad. I remember the days when Friendster was cool and everyone was on it. Then came MySpace, and in that got canned with Facebook. Once FB floats, investors are gonna put a lot of pressure on the management to monetize their assets (users) and this is gonna push the engineers to their peak frustration. They'll start using codes that users hate, and sooner or later a new social network will start, and the cycle begins anew.

Im just getting really annoyed by facebook, twitter, and myspace stuff forced upon me. I install something, there yahoo toolbar forced, or facebook link.
I keep facebook just as an easy connection to friends, but not as my way of life. I go to facebook anytime and i see at least 10 of my friends sitting out there, where 9 out of these 10 post all what they did.
I also loved skyfire, but now its impossible to use it on my Magic at all. Instead of making that, they could have fixed video errors, that happen in 2 out of 3 videos. Plus there were no single movie that I could finish without an error.
Off topic: You guys should have seen the computer at my temporary workplace. It had 150 toolbars installed on IE, Starting from yahoo toolbar and ending with facebook toolbar. All kinds of notifiers and BS, forced on the noobs. Took me 2 hours to clean everything from it, including hundreds of viruses and bs.
It is clearly obvious that the goal of each social network is to capture people as many as possible. Alone I do not blame them. For the most part it is people's fault.
I was growing up in Ukraine, and a computer was something that we did once a month (if lucky enough). We did anything possible, from fishing to exploring... Were out from sunrise till sundown.
Even shared photos and proposed to girls in PERSON. Now people breaking up on freaking facebook, and seek a remedy for their problems...

next step will be lowered monthly bill for web2.0 and raised monthly bill for old web ... naturally most folks will flock to the cheaper web2.0 "becuz thats what they use anyway" and by this happening , slowly will form a whitelist of "big sites" where users have a net id to sign in and u can be moderated , banned and sanctionated . the isp's will be free to push select sites(read :who they get the best offers from) at the users while the truly free internet , where anyone can make their own , and speak out , shall slowly fade away

Actually, it's turning the other way around. The big players were bouncing around the idea of charging users more if they go to popular sites like FB and Google.
IDK why is the Op so facebook/social networks hater,
i dont have any toolbar nor viruses, eventhough i dont use an antivrus software or anything.
i have a fb account and i use it only for people i know... no need for strangers, they are always rejected...
Hey everyone, I didn't know where to post this. Theres a no-iphone rule in the General section, so I thought this would be safe. I would normally ask iOS questions on an iOS Forum, but this is something that I'm only going to get dumb answers on an iOS forum.
We're wanting to buy my 10 year old daughter an iPod Touch for Christmas. She actually wants an HD video camera, but the iPod Touch serves that purpose, plus it would be cool to let her iMessage chat, and Face Time with all her cousins, grandparents, ect. Everyone in our family uses iOS devices, except me.
I detest iOS with a passion, but I'm not going to be as bull-headed as to buy her a Galaxy Player, and force all our relatives to sign up for Google Talk accounts just to chat with her. iOS just makes more sense.
Heres my question: I want to be able to chat with her from my Android devices. It would be a frosty day in hell I would let her get a Facebook account, so Google Talk is the obvious choice. Except that apparently there isn't a Google Talk app for iOS. It looks like Google merged it into their Google+ app. But I'm certainly not setting her up with a Google+ account.
I want to do both Video Chat, and IM. I'm considering maybe just setting her up with a Skype account, and relying on that for both IM and Video. Anyone have any other good solutions?
Thanks
Skype, or the trusty old AIM which looks a lot different now. lol
Skype. Most other cross platform apps have limitations or make you pay.
But if you set up her G+ account then set it up completely private.

For video chatting I recommend Tango.
Works with iOS, Android, PC, Mac, and Windows Phone. I personally like it better than Skype.

That was one of my thoughts. My biggest concern is that she could change her settings (unwittingly). But I suppose the App probably wouldn't let her do that.
Maybe if I set up the account, and didn't tell her the password?

Do they allow users to search for eachother? Or do you need to know somebody's details to add them? I'm mostly worried strangers adding her, and trying to video chat with her.

Skype servers are iffy when sending messages while the person is offline. They might they might not get them. G+ always sends them.

I posted this on G+ and thought I'd share it here.
So, there's an onslaught of people with all manner of "When will 4.4 or Nexus 5 be released?"
Let me help you out by teaching you a bit about Google Alerts.
Google Alerts is a sadly underused service. You can go to http://www.google.com/alerts first and type in Nexus 5 confirmed in the search box.
If you use RSS readers like feedly, you can change delivery to feed. To import it into feedly, after you finish creating the alert, right click the RSS icon next to the alert and copy link address. You then go into feedly and click on Add New Content and just paste the address into the box.
If you don't use RSS, leave it set to your email address.
Make sure that as-it-happens is selected.
Click on Create Alert.
Now, anytime Google gets a new search result that matches your search term, you'll either get an email or a new result in your RSS feeds. This will save you from hours upon hours of scouring the web for results on when it will be released. Feel free to make the search term whatever you like but I'm fairly confident once we have the exact release date, there'll be plenty of Nexus 5 confirmed results but you can also create multiple alerts for multiple search strings to cover your bases, just don't get mad at me if you get inundated with email.
I've used Google Alerts before and it's a fantastic service. Thanks for reminding me to use it here. I didn't put two and two together but great idea.
Finally a thread of use in the nexus 5 forums!

Nice idea. Personally, I use G+ quite a bit so I'll know that it was released when it explodes with nerd joy followed quickly by nerd rage after Google Play screws something up. :silly:
I'll say this for them, though: I keep coming back for more because every order/pre-order is an adventure.
The problem is that by the time you get an alert, all the stock has been sold out.

The Nexus 4 was released in the store something like thirty minutes to an hour before the official announced time; I remember that my obsessive checking got me in before the rush (and then of course my order fell into limbo and I got my phone in the second wave of deliveries).
I say if you care enough to want to get it now, keep checking the obvious places when you get a chance.

It alerts you when there is news coverage, not when the phone is available for purchase. All the fanatics will be F5'ing it up and there's a high chance that by the time a news site picks up on it, all the stock will be dried up.
Hey
Too often I find myself checking out a new notification on my Pebble while talking to people, but they don't know what the Pebble is. And it makes me feel as it looks like I'm checking out the time because I'm so bored from this conversation.
Am I alone?
Sent from my LG-D802 using Tapatalk
I think it'll still be the same message if you pull your phone out to check for notification.
I think it's less rude to check the watch but I have no data to back that up lol.. My gf said that they both are rude. She is vice president of a bank or something she knows better than me I'm just an artist

Fortunately for me my friends already know what a tech nerd I am so it isn't a big deal.
i use to have that issue but now people tend to notice the bone jarring vibration soundin on my wrist lol
I tend to look at people when they are talking to me so they know that what they are saying is important. I expect the same treatment in return. With that in mind, when I get my Pebble for Christmas from my wife, I will try to look at my notifications in a way as to not insult anyone. I'm a tech and am always am playing with some new tech toy, but when a user comes into my office, I drop everything and listen to them.
Just my two cents

I agree about respecting someone by passing attention, but I found myself in a very casual conversation with a coworker and I received an email so I looked at my watch. Obviously if it's a work related or important email that takes priority over just chatting but I still felt kinda bad checking it.

Got the same look, I was in orientation at my new job, that's what the person doing the orientation thought. Got a comment that pointed to my being rude in a nice way, so I explained that it's a digital watch and I was just checking the notifications etc.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
Usually, I'm moving my arm while the notification is scrolling up or I dismiss it quickly, so people see the motion and say "hey, that's one of those new smartwatches, right?"
It's interesting, because at first most people said smartwatch or Pebble; with the release of the Gear, I've been hearing people ask if it's a Galaxy Gear. Power of marketing for ya.
Funny, that's what people ask me also "Is that a Samsung Gear? "

Yeah. Not a waste of money in my line of business. I work in the oil field, and a lot of the times, I leave my phone in my truck to keep from breaking it. So it's nice to have a device that lets me know if I'm missing something important.

Actually, it provides more than just notifications. I use it as a stopwatch and a timer for sporting events. I can control music playing from the watch. I use it for Google turn-by-turn navigation. I can control the phone's camera to take pictures. With the upcoming Pebble 2.0, there will be many exciting app development opportunities. The Pebble will be able to pull data across the web without companion apps on the phone. And Bluetooth LE will be implemented, thus reducing battery consumption.

Hi guys,
I am just about to buy a second hand GWR, and would like to know what you think.
I don't really know how to make use of such a thing in my day-to-day business...
I guess what I want to know is - is it just a nice to have (expensive) toy, or do you guys make use of the features to actually benefit from having this add-on.
Thanks for your inputs.
D.
W/o trying to be mean, you do realise that such a question (and the respective answer) are highly personal.
If you NEED one or not, only you can know. For me, is very useful and I cannot go back to a "dumb" watch. For others, these are just nice (and expensive) toys ...
It's up to you and only you if you should buy it or not.
Agree.
Just wanted to know if and what you find useful, because I really have zero experience with the platform.
Can you name a thing or two you do differently now that you have the watch, please.
I'm not the representative person to answer this. I've been a tech addict all my life and I went through all the Sony smartwatches on the market until now, starting with the Sony liveview, few years back ... so, do I find them useful? You can bet . The main thing for me are the remote notifications ... to know if I need to reach for my phone or not. SO .. email/messages preview is the main reason I need such a device .. the others are just trailing behind: personalised face, weather at my wrist, remote control for my media players ... you name it.
buy it if you want a nice Watch with some cool Features
I have never used a wristwatch, I bought sony smartwatch 2 and was sold. I use it mostly in my work, have a lot of incoming calls and emails and it's so great to see those notifications in my watch instead of taking up my phone every time it sounds. A lot of mails are not urgent to reply and some are. With my watch I can see this things without to grab my phone. I use my Lgr every day and it's really useful.

Thanks all!
I have bought the watch and am now using it for the first time.
