HI every body
thanks for everybody that works hard to get us these amazing stuff ...
first of all , i`m not a developer nor an expert or have any good knowledge about developing ... but i really want to enjoy these great roms and tweaks as everybody else .. so i have 2 suggestions that i really think that will help anybody just like me :
the first one is when a developer release a new rom , i really need a step by step installation method with links for every kernal or anything needed to install it ... ( i came up with this suggestion after i tried yesterday to switch from a rom to carbon rom , but unfortunatly the installation failed even after an other member tried to help me and gave me instructions what to try to install it )
maybe alot of you thinks that is a silly suggestion , but believe me that there is people like me that dont know about developing and want to enjoy these roms
the second suggestion that if you could make a thread that contains all developers roms and kernals and any other stuff and group it like : ( best roms for games ) or ( best visual looking roms )or anything like that ...
i don`t know if this is allowed in the xda forums .. but if it is , then it would be great .....
i know that some members will tell me to try it by myself .. but believe me i love to try roms by myself but i really dont understand every feature in every rom , actually i dont understand most of the features .. so if you do this suggestion it would be great
thanks again for everyone that works hard at this great forum , we all appreciate your work ... hope that you continue the great work

Hello.
1. Each new ROM, Old or New will always have complete installation procedure in the OP Page 1. Failure to install Rom can be reported in the thread or try addressing the dev directly.
2. I'll tell you this before our forum moderator tells you. Best Roms and such are in violation of XDA rules thus not allowed in XDA. Our kind developers created lots of ROMS for us users with the "BEST" interest thus it's up to us entirely to choose which ROM suits our preferences best. And since many of them are busy with their actual real life, I don't think any of them has time to maintain these 'links to here and there' thread. It's our user's duty to search and learn by ourselves and finally post a valid question in this forum. No offence really but your request is basically like asking your teachers to do your assigned homework.

about the the installation procedure .. not every rom has specific information about needed kernals or recovery mods (specially ) ...
and about the teacher thing .. i said that im sure that somebody will come and tell me that i should do it by myself and test the roms ... but to let you know that i tested 4 roms in just 10 days and tried to test the 5th but couldn`t install it ... thnx anyway

Not wanting to debate, but for kernels it's already stated that always use a safe kernel. When you come from a TW based kernel. Philz kernel is the best option to choose. As in KK roms, always flash a Raw 4/5 first as a base kernel, reboot to recovery n then u can always flash philz latest KK compatible recoveries (V.6.0.4 up) to do all wipes and formats before flashing rom. If you flash recent roms starting with 4.1 up, these are mandatory steps to take. The rest does not really matter.
Again I mean no offence, but I think you can see that each devs has painfully written all instructions in their OP so that's why I think it's really not fair for us to ask total guidance like that. And since you are able to flash test that many rom, u should already know what to ask in this forum.Again no offence meant. Thanks

It often is the latest stable software in the ROMs. And another thing.. It's better if you try some roms out. Its not so popular around here to ask about a god rom. It's a matter of taste and so on. Not so nice to other chefs if i, or any one else recommend a specific rom.
Check the thread about how to flash HSPL and just go nuts flashing and testing. Good luck!
Admin, please close.
Before anyone creates a new thread, the basic requirements for common decency would be to read the wiki, forum rules and use the 'search' function.
Now I understand that you are new, but your question(s) have been asked many times before.
FYI, a dummies guide thread exists for flashing. Also to ask an opinionated query is frowned upon in XDA as it creates endless long threads due to everyone having a different opinion. Best advice would be to read first few posts in each rom thread as this generally lists whats in each rom as well as providing a few screenshots of said rom. Then try a few roms to make your own conclusion on whats best for you

well, welcome to xda
you are unfortunately not the first to ask that question and I fear you won't be the last either...
check one of the older threads on the subject, don't neglect to read the last post for educational reasons
analyze your needs, check rom threads first posts for descriptions/content/aim, compare both, try some roms and thus find >your< best rom on your own, only way there is
cheers
Dear friends ,
As well all know that kernel is important for the battery life and making the final version of froyo for our X1 .. so cant we all get together and join the development in kernel section instead of requesting all the new versions of ports .. this will prove as obstacle in path of making a complete working version ...
This is my personal thinking plz leave your opinion what you people think abt this ..
Devs are are also requested to share their words !!
Thank you .........
Happy .. Androiding )
ya i agree our kernel developers dont have a proper objectives and feedbacks to develop and our users dont have a proper place for latest kernel and builds information
I say we should make a united android development team and by that i mean neopeek.com and kovsky kernel development threads active developers to come toghether and divide the development among them selves and share their knowledge to release better ports.
we should have a proper thread or website to have a connection with the users too. we could restart the XPEROID.com again and have a proper threading and network between the users and developers so that even users have a proper place to report problems and get to know about the latest releases
I think thats the only way where we will get alot of users, there will be alot of testing and reportings and finaly we can manage to develop better ports
but before anything we need to know if developers,XPEROID.com owner and the rest of the users are willing to co-operate or not
So what do you suggest? There were many sites, even a bugtracker. But nothing was used.
i really agree what ... kerfooly said and really felt bad that 350 people read it but nobody replied with their idea ... Thought. Instead every one wants their device to run froyo
i would like to ask the moderator 4 this post to be sticky... If possible.... Bcz we would not succed witout planning...

what do you say abt this? And cant we take help from the devs at hd2 as they have finished making the perfect kernel....

Hey all sorry for this silly questions, but I very interested about this fact that most of rom developers that I have seen is forget to test their rom before publishing to us. I seen their included many futures in their rom, but in the last sentences is always say "report to me immediately if you found some bug"
I am not developer but I very interest about their job, they do the best for us without any salary. we will appreciate their job. we know they were working hard to do that. But this questions is always come and I want to know what is happened;
1. that is not possible to checking our jobs when we finish to build something or develop a Rom?
2. and about Bug, that is bug are coming with different situation perhaps different type of phone or hardware or maybe production code
I know someone there can give me explanation, please help me
generally, dev. do test their Rom before released it.but not everything, maybe concentrate on basic and new feature in their Rom.however, nothing is perfect.more features will lead to more bugs.sometime,if u add 1 new feature, its will bring bug to others.so they need our help to report it.plus they give it to us for free so we should give something back in return,I guest.
and sometime bugs happen. just because someone don't read a thread carefully
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions &
Read the Forum Rules Ref Posting

Moving to Q&A
I am sorry admin. I think this can be made to discussion tread. I will waiting another responses for this read. likely some explanation or maybe a way or process to develop a roms
If I get you right.
1. Developers DO TEST the ROM before they release it. Thats why as you can see it took sometime to be released as they want to make sure that the ROM is stable. (I dont know If all devs do that but Im sure most of them do, some ask for testers.) The reason why they ask to report you BUGS is that they cannot test all the component and esp the apps that we install. Basically they only test the default component or features that the ROM has. Issues arise because of the user setup on there phone. We have different setups thats why we have different problems, also 1 reason is how you install the ROM on your phone we may have same phone specs but believe me bugs you might encounter will not exist on mine. So in general this is want the dev to do to address those issues that users find while using the ROM. If you want the developer to test it all then dont expect the ROM to be release frequently. Actually you know the answer and was stated on your no. 2.
likely some explanation or maybe a way or process to develop a roms

Different people = different phones = different experience/bugs...even on my GingerZaraki, I have no problems with wifi on alfs but many others complained of wifi errors...I have a team of 6 so stuff like this can be tested out so the chances of others having the same probs are less. Hope that answered your question
Well its kinda impossible to navigate through all the system to discover any possible bugs, right? And I agree with Rohin.

Well I understood know. so our phone is make multiple problems with some rom. One more time, what is the best guys, Install a rom from original rom or can directly for another. for example, let's call my original Rom (eclair) is ROM A, old costume ROM is ROM B, and the New one of ROM is ROM C.
now I used ROM B and wanna to try new ROM C. that is good if I installed directly from ROM B or make recovery first to original ROM A, before installed ROM C. Sometimes I have problems or boot lop, and sometime is fine ?
Err.. full wipe after rom B.

Hey Guys...
First of all - I am Amazed by the level of this forum... Its truly great...
I am Very new to XDA. I Still managed to figure out essential things for my captivate.
I spent straight 8 to 10hrs [Approx a Month ago] reading and searching variety of threads, links and videos and got the Idea about rooting, Custom ROM, Flashing etc...
[I must Repeat - "Just Idea", Because having no real background and knowledge about anything related to these things... I obviously feel like Still Missing a lot of basic terms]...
Anyways - Point for explaining all that is to Make my 'Beginner' Level clear... B'coz Members here called as beginners are also quite good with all these basic terms...
I am using 'LANIGHT' ROM right now...
Now the problem is... There are still some bugs in this version... [Camera, SMS, etc]
So the question is:
1. The Best, latest and most stable version of ROM out there - which would be great for beginners like us? [We can have this thread for the updates of such ROM time to time] - For Us - This part seems very difficult to figure out...
2. Also the process of installing that ROM...
3. And if there is a quick way to figure out the 1st question in forum... Except spending hours just reading the threads... Very very difficult work... [Hats of to you guys...]
Thanks in advance...

1. This question can't be answered. For many reasons but mainly because the Best ROM for you, that feels in your needs and such won't be the same as let's say, the best ROM for me. The best you can do if look at the features list and go through the last few pages of the ROM to know about the bugs/issues. There isn't a perfect ROM, just gotta find the one that suits you the best.
2. Follow the ROM's instructions in the OP (Don't forget the Gapps)
3. Refer to #1. Also, for respect for the Devs and to avoid flaming, threads like these often get closed.
Hey, we all start somewhere
Welcome and BWolf gave you some very sound advice. I've been flashing new ROMs pretty much on a daily basis this week to find the ROM that suits me the best. Enjoy flashing and playing around with different ROMs. The nice thing about this phone is that pretty much there are ways to revive it if something "happens."

Choosing a rom is a hit and trial method. Just go to captivate android development forum and choose any rom which looks good download it and flash it using recovery. Most common thing is clockwork mod recovery to install any ROM. keep flashing different roms until you find the one that suits you. Happy flashing.

I used to hold off buying a jig... until I truly needed one. Thanks to one click odin and heimdall, if anything happens, then you're always good to flash back to stock and try again
I highly recommend a jig as it can save you from a LOT of headache.

You can buy one or build it yourself. It's a great investment and insurance plan
Feel free to flash whatever Captivate ROM you like, just pay attention to the flashing procedures in each thread (as Bwolf said).

Beginners like you? IMHO, there are lots of different beginners and you haven't shared enough for me to know what kind of beginner you are.
By recent and best, do you mean that you just want a stock ROM, perhaps rooted, but otherwise pretty much the same as the last stock release, Gingerbread KK4? It is 'recent' - because it is the latest and final official release, more recent than earlier releases.
Or do you want a ROM that is unofficial, won't be supported by your carrier or by Samsung, but that runs Jelly Bean 4.2 with an occasional bug or broken feature?
Beginner is relative to the field in question, yes? An Olympic gold medal swimming winner in his first year in medical school is a beginner at surgery,
Do you excel at really carefully reading and understanding all instructions before you start on a task?
So, if you are starting as a complete newbie, maybe go for KK4 Gingerbread and add the Corn Kernel. Get stable with that. Get comfortable making nandroid backups, and using root browsers to back up efs and other folders. get comfortable moving the files to your pc, to the external sd card, etc.
After getting all the stuff backed up with good knowledge about how to restore it all, then go flash a stable 4.1 or 4.2 jelly bean rom. you will need to flash twice. oh, and get gapps, too.
does this all sound like jibberish? read the sticky threads, read the glossaries, etc,.
If you're looking for a ROM with a lot of UI and benchmark improvements, Captivating by Sephi looks great, although I haven't tried it myself. No one here really wants to pick 1 specific ROM, because everyone is different and don't want to be rude to the dev's .
Flashing ROMs on the Captivate is fairly simple, and as others have stated if you have a jig (if you don't want to buy one pre-made, you can make your own w/o soldering, there's a guide in this forum for it), you can just play around with different ROMs and can almost always fix the phone if anything bad should happen.
Just browse XDA until you find one that you think you may like, read the reviews, and try it out for yourself
I recommended Captivating ROM by she phi.. U will not disappointed
