What is the use of EFS backup?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The EFS holds your IMEI and other baseband-related stuff which essentially allows you to conncet to mobile networks. So if you lose your IMEI/your EFS becomes corrupt you'll find that your mobile reception won't work.
So it becomes pretty important to have a backup of it somewhere in case things go wrong (if you don't its not hard to fix, just bothersome)

It would more wise to backup EFS before flashing a custom ROM.

Will custom rom change the values inside the efs folder if yes is it possible that we can retain the original efs values by using earlier backed efa folder

1. no
2. if the folder is created as image it is easier. Copy and paste often won't work.
Upgrading stepwise is the safest way to keep all fine (GB, ICS, JB/CM10.2, KK). Upgrading to 4.3/CM10.2 will resize the partitions so best way to downgrade again beyond 4.3 is to flash stock GB with PIT file and repartition with Odin.

I have flashed darky's no wipe and was using Axura before
Axura never changed my product code or IMEI
However darky's has changed my product code but not the IMEI
I have a proper backup created with SGS Toolbox but how do I restore it? I have root explorer so should I use that to overwrite the folder with the backup?
I only have my phone at the moment so restoring the backup from SD with the phone is what I'm looking for.
Thanks,
Brian

Just replace the nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 back to your /efs folder. leave the .bak files alone if they are dated from august. those are the originals, these can be used to restore your .bin and .bin.md5 files.
if you have root explorer I would honestly copy that whole EFS folder to your SD card and maybe to a backup on the computer.
Nah no Aug files... Some nov files though... And i got this phone after the files' date so i suppose those may be it? Im guess having a proper product code and imei is all that matters correct?
Thanks and merry xmas

Ok.. So ive tried replacing the files with my backup and the product code stays the same... However when i tun a product check it says the backup has the correct product code... So i go to my earliest product code check folder and rename the files and paste them into the efs folder then reboot... Am i doing something wrong? I have the correct imei and things are working so should i just get a computer handy and follow the steps to restore everything?

Hi!
I downgraded from ICS 4.0.4 IMM76K to 2.3.6 GB.
Everything was smooth, EXCEPT THAT SIM IS NOT DETECTED.
The same sim is detected in all other phones. No other sim is detected in my gt i9000!

I made a backup via cwm..im trying to restore "data" and "system" via advanced restore and see wether it works..currently doing that
OK let me know then!
If it not works, try the app nitrality from market, you can try to restore your efs backup with the app
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
didnt work.
So now I am fully restoring it via CWM, before i was rebooting into CWM mode, and then advance restoring.
Ok I'm gonna also try that app and let you know!
Btw thank you so much for your help man!! Im so bloody depressed! :-(
The damage is reversible right? I mean im not a gonner am I? I'll keep you updated!
Since you made an backup of your efs folder its always possible to restore so no reason for getting depressed mate!

I restored it fully, but after the phone rebooted, it just got stuck at the boot screen..i took out the battery after 5 mins as it was still stuck at the boot screen.
What do you suggest now? I'll try that app you suggested once I get my firmware working!
Retiring for bed, will follow up on your advice when i wake up..
Go into the recovery and make a factory reset, if the Akku trick won't work

Did you make sure you flashed with a .pit file as well,? You must do this down grading as the file partitions are different from ics
Ok I tried to go into recovery mode, but the phone would just boot again, from the very first boot screen (where samsung is displayed at the bottom)..so should i flash again with the .pit thingy?
ok guyz nitrality didnt work..flashed it with gingerbread with .pit again..no imei number

Do you have a back up of your efs folder?
Yes i have the efs backup on my pc and ds car. I tried copying the efs to system root dir, but no luck.
the nv_data.bin file is 2MB in the backup folder on my sd card, but as soon as I copy the whole efs folder to root dir, this nv_data.bin file is 0bytes size..
One question, when u copied your Backup into the root directory
Did you made a reboot then?

No I did not reboot after copying it to the root directory. Let me try and I'll let you know
I copied nfs to root again, but the nv_data.bin file is reduced from 2mb to 0bytes as soon as its copied...and reobooted but still no luck...
What app do you use for copy your Backup and another question, in what folder exactly do you copy it

Hello
I have a Samsung Galaxy S with SlimBean Installed, previously I had the stock 2.3.3 XEF version and CM9
When I rooted the device for first time the first thing I did ws backing up the EFS partition, I have made subsequent backups since then. However, the files don't seem to be equal and don't match the .MD5 signatures provided.
Do the files in this partition change over time? Does that mean they are getting corrupted? The most logical thing would be that the signatures matched the files but they don't..
Thank you.
Hello
Any ideas of why this happens and if it's normal?
Thank you.
And I've just checked my phone, the .bak files have dissapeared.
I've got an old backup tho, but why did they dissapeared?
Thanks.
Edit: The rest of the files are in the efs folder, they weren't displayed because Slim filemanager doesn't show hidden files by default.
So the only question remaining is: Do you know why the MD5 signatures don't match the files?
Thank you.
I think since IMEI is unchanged - thats ok. The most important file you have to keep is nv_data.bin (i think that one) it holds your IMEI. So as long as your phone works - no panic.

Hello
Thanks. But why does the hash change and differs from it's MD5 signature?
Probably so.. dont worry about it and keep nv_data.bin just in case.

When you flash back to Stock 2.3.6 with or without Root it will Fix EFS for you ..just to let you know
I followed this link in upgrading from Gingerbread to Slim Bean and it worked great:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19425513
However now I have no signal (no IMEI). I didn't see the EFS folder in the main SDCard / directory either. I do see a folder called backup which contains this folder.
So curious what I should do. I like the phone function on this device.
Also, when I connect the USB port it gives me the option to select mass storage and when I do, I get the usual popup folder. But I can't do any firmware upgrades now (doesn't show the phone as connected). Curious what I should do?

You'll have to get in download mode, flash Odin KK4 without bootloaders and work your way back up to Slim Bean.
Once on stock KK4, make a backup of the EFS folder in case it happens again.
Thanks for that. Is there a link to backing up? I suppose I have to be rooted to do any backups?

You basically copy the folder to a safe place. There is an app for that too that will make a backup.

if you flash Corn Kernel 7.0a via odin after flashing stock kk4, you can root with it via cwm, and the cwm included with kk4 also has an option under 'toggles' to backup efs to sd. reboot once before flashing again and you should see a complete copy of efs on your internal sd, under backup. seems like you already have it.

Hi,
i have a problem that is new to me. I flashed a lot of roms without problems and was on cm10.2. I went back to cm9 and wanted back to cm10.2.
I lost my efs folder and had to flash a stock rom. Now i am on cm9 (mackay rom with gear kernel) and when i flash cm10.2 mackay rom a lost the efs folder everytime.
So now the question:
How can i flash a cm10.2 rom without losing the efs folder?
Kind regards
Srkonus

Its odd that you lose the IMEI from flashing from CM9 to CM10.2, although that happened to me today as well
Two ways to do this,
1.) Go back to stock, then flash in pure CM9, let it boot, then go to CM10.2
2.) Just flash in CM10.2 anyway, you should have backups of your efs (on my phone at least its /sdcard/backup and there's a few folders all beginning with efs). Inside those folders there should be a whole list of files, two of which are nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5.
Download Root Browser/Root Explorer and copy nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 to /efs, overwrite the existing files. Reboot and it should be solved (I did this today so it worked for me).

Hi,
thanks for your answer. Unfortionally it works not for me. Replacing the efs folder does not work and also flashing to cm10.x. i would stay at cm9.

Possibly this thread could help?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859914
BTW: one can do it either by using ADB or within the app "Terminal Emulator" (by Jack Palevich) with same commands.
