This is for my curiosity and many other users who I know are wondering the same thing, I've searched for this, but can't really find anything that answers it to my satisfaction.
So I'm running 4.3, with build number .290
I want to root my phone, but I know I need to flash .534 back to my phone. As far as I know, THIS will stop my sim being recognised by the phone. Do I then need to ROOT the phone, and then flash .290 again for the sim to work again.
So which .290 flash will I use? Just the normal FTF file for .290?
Thank you, I'm an active contributor to the forum, but I like to be super sure about what I'm doing before I do it, and I gather many other users do. The reason I'm asking in such detail is because my phone was rooted before, I updated (by mistake) to 4.3 and then flashed back to .290 where it stopped my sim working. Took me a few hours to work out how to fix it, as the pccompanion wasn't working for me!
Thank you!

If you want to flash the firmware you have, follow this guide from part B to part C, then you will have a ftf copy of your current firmware.
About the root thing, downgrade to .257 then .534 so you don't have the IMEI and signal issues. Then root and OTA to .257 and then, if you get OTA update to .290 go for it, but some people said that you will only get partial root access.
So you will have to either flash a prerooted firmware or unlock bootloader and turn off Sony's RIC and then root the normal way.
To unlock bootloader, just follow the instructions here but don't forget to backup the TA partition using this guide.

Hi everybody!
This is my first post as I usual solve my problems just by reading others people posts.
I recently flashed my z1 (C6903) to 14.2.A.0.290 Generic NCB (Unbranded/Nordic) (4.3 android) as I didn 't like the DE(german version) with the bloatware. I rooted it before with kingo but lost my root after flashing the NCB version I'm now looking for a way to downgrade to a older ncb version root it with kingo and then do a ota upgrade to keep the root. Does anybody have the FTF therfore and what boxes should I pick I want to keep my data or should I let it do a full wipe do a backup with sony companion or the sony app on the phone and than play it in after finishing the downgrade root and OTA? Pls help me I' m completly lost and I'm really missing the root.
Thanks in advance to everyone!!!!!

My experience is that if older FTFs aren't in the mega thead (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2469191), then you won't find them anywhere. Mega thread only has a 290 FTF for NCB, so you may be SOL if you want to strictly downgrade to 534 NCB and then OTA to 290. However, as long as you flash a generic FTF, you won't get carrier bloatware.
If root is what you'd want, I'd go with [NUT]'s pre-rooted 290: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2572988. It's the easiest way to get full root.
..or you follow the instruction step by step here on page 2, post #16 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588331&page=2

Here's a link to the correct FTF (note that it is .257, so follow the guides regarding rooting .257, or if you're savvy, install a .534 kernel, root with Kingo, install a .257 kernel again, then OTA)
https://mega.co.nz/#!WkolCYjB!IIXR5SgAn-J05MXmG26GYyi2P2sYcF34Avn73z5Y9n0
It is incorrectly named Generic SE, but it is the right customisation ID for Generic NCB (1276-9897).

Sony PC Companion can make a backup for you, I don't know how much will be saved as in order to flash a 4.2.2 ROM you'll need to wipe your data partition.

257 can't be rooted manually, only 534 can be rooted by vRoot/Kingo/etc.
Since you are downgrading, you must wipe data and will lose everything you don't copy off the phone.

No, it's not possible to upgrade 257/290 and keep root. You asked about downgrading, not rooting 290. If you have an unlocked BL, go read the dev thread on how to root 290. With a locked BL, you'll need to get rooted 534/257 and then flash a custom pre-rooted ROM from the dev forum.

Actually with OTA you keep semi-root, but in essence you're right. Actually I think the easiest solution is to flash a stock .534 ROM, root it with Kingo, grab TA partition backup, flash .290, unlock bootloader, flash a recovery, do a proper root, reflash stock boot partition, flash TA backup.

Yeah, true, I've just stopped telling people about partial root since full root is possible. Those who don't know to ask don't know what it means anyway, and it's just simpler for everyone involved to leave it out.

Hello XDA forums, i've recently bought a Sony Xperia Z1 (C6906) and it has android KitKat 4.4.2, i'm not sure about the exact version tough, update center says that it's the most recent version. Now I have a couple questions,
1) First of all, I want to root my device and my former experiances on Android was on my Galaxy S4, which i could simply use Odin to do most stuff. From what I understood, that option is not possible, at least when my phone is just, stock. How can I root this stock phone easily?
2) And also I've heard that I had to downgrade the device in order to be able to root it. I don't want to downgrade, especially to 4.3, can't I just root in the current firmware?
3) Is bootloader a dangerous thing to mess with? Some say if I don't take backup of TA, I may hard-brick the device. Is that true? And is it an easy thing to do? To backup TA, do I have to root?
4) Also how can I install CWM to my device. I also want to install CWM on my device.
Thanks..

Is not dangerous. You brick phones just doing mistakes. You don't have to Unlock Bootloader to gain Root. So skip this part.

Download the lates DualRecovery for Z1 which have CWM, Philz and TWRP Recovery, all 3 in one. Just run the application from PC and install to phone, but you have to be on .534 FW.

This is why the people get confused. Downgrade to .534 first, then install DualRecovery, then follow the Instruction from that link to get to your Firmware Rooted.
I think @[NUT] should add this steps on his threads for people like you who start from not rooted .681, .757 and so on.

Well, I tought Sony would be just like Samsung, after all they are both androids is what I tought. Well, it's diffrent :/ Anyways I got to make sure about the things I do, because they may end up as bad things such as brick or etc.
I got it now, it's almost done.
Back in S4, all I had to do was to take the phone into Odin mode, then flash tar.md5's via odin, and it was all over, I installed cwm and rooted without downgrading and so. I feel sad that Xperia wasn't like. Well it's a great phone tough..

Just put the .534 FW in Flashtool Folder and flash it. Then connect to PC and use the Installer to install Dual recovery...the rest you know...
BTW, wipe everything any time you flash anything (Data, Appslog, Cache) to execute a clean installation. Yes, you will lose your data, but better be safe instead have issues later.

No, I understood but kinda didn't wanted to.. :/
I already downgraded, rooted and installed recovery. Then I updated to stock rom 757 back, thinking that I could simply root using recovery. Anyways, after I updated, I couldn't get in to recovery mode, because the one I installed was without unlocking bootloader, I simply installed firmware based recovery. I don't really think about unlocking bootloader, the TA codes and stuff kinda scares me.. I did took backup of my TA tough. I just need to have root in OFW Kitkat. I can do without recovery (which i can't install because of bootloader). But root is essential. :/

Hi guys,
I've rooted my Z1, installed CWM and unlocked my bootloader (TA-backup present). Everything seems fine.
Exept for the fact that I cannot find a custom rom with the features i specifically want (as close to stock as possible, without bloatware, but with all the Sony Camera features) and therefore I would like to go back to the original 757 firmware that I had before I rooted my phone,
I do want to keep my CWM recovery, and need root acces (ie SuperSU)
I'm lookin for the Original Sony 4.4.2 757 rom which i can flash through CWM
Can anyone please help me?
Regards,
Tiemen
Edit: I see that theres a new 4.4.4 firmware. If possible I would like the stock rom for this one.

Certainly you will lose both root access and CWM when you flash
Search 'how to flash by Flash Tools' in your own language
Be warned that you will also all stuffs which are in Internal Memory, like files, messages, photos, movies, etc
Take a backup
Sent from my C6903 using Tapatalk
Download the 4.4.4 stock firmware (FTF file) and flash via Flashtool. Ensure that you untick the Wipe data option in Flashtool, before you flash. This way, your user data will be intact after the flashing. And yes, you'll need to reroot (can use this tool) and install recovery again.
Thanks for your info!
I will start reading about the flashtool and will try asap.
Lets hope I won't get an expensive paper weight :silly:
If I want to go to full stock again (ie Relock Bootloader and no root), Do I need to flash FTF, then restore TA-partitions and I'm all done? Or do I need to root it before I can restore TA?
