Hi all, my Galaxy Note is running:
- stock android 4.1.2
- Baseband version N7000DXLS8
- build JZO54K.N7000DXLSE
Tried several times to root device but unsuccessful although Odin says "installation was a success". Tried to root using PhilZ-cwm6-DXLSE-OLB-4.91.2.tar.md5. Superuser doesn't show up and only noticeable change when device reboots is the exclamation mark when it retarts. Hopefullu you guys can help solve my problem. Thanks

If you have a nice touch recovery then flash this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
Also, if you want to remove that yellow triangle:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/orig-development/2013-10-04-triangleaway-v3-10-t1494114
If you don't have the touch recovery then download the same version of Philz kernel in .zip format and flash it through your stock recovery.

Thanks for the help. Finally got my device rooted. So if i plan to flash this omni-4.4.2-20140522-n7000-NIGHTLY ROM - do I just save it on the SDcard and use the recovery mode?
By the way, since i'm choosing between Slim-n7000-4.4.2.build.5-OFFICIAL-4078 and omni ROM - which one is better? I just want a smooth ROM that has good battery life.

First you'll have to flash raw kernel. Once you ahve flashed that, reboot into recovery and you can flash Omni

I used to use Omni (haven't updated my signature in a while) and it was completely stable apart from the fuse bug. I believe Slim is based off CM and from what I have heard then all the ROMs based off of CM sources aren't very stable. In terms of performance, they should be more or less the same, Slim is lighter so it may be slightly faster. The battery life on both will be the same.
There are a few tweaks you would have to do to get better battery life on AOSP based ROMs, mainly disabling location services, blocking as many apps as possible from keeping the device awake (you can do that in Settings -> App Ops/Privacy Manager).
If you want something fast then you could try Carbon ROM (that's what I am using) but it is extremely unstable (at least for me, I haven't seen anyone else complaining).

Hmm...so I use the r5 kernel right? Just to clear things up, when planning to flash rom and kernels then you can use recovery procedure? Always? Si which particular situations do you use Odin?

Guess it's best to go over each off the features of the ROMS before flashing.I forgot to mention in my earlier post that I was looking for the ROM that is closest to the Google android experience, being a Nexus 7 tablet user/owner.

You have to boot into recovery mode (hold down volume up, power button, home button until you are in). Once there, you can flash any 4.4 based ROM.

I originally planned to switch to the Paranoid Android ROM, which would allow me to run tablet-oriented apps on my Galaxy Note, and whilst that would be absolutely fantastic the process seems beyond my technological abilities. Not only that, but I'd lose the S-Pen applications that I actually use quite a bit, so I decided in the end against switching ROMs. But, I still have a brick-bug infected kernel, so how difficult is changing kernels (not ROMs) and will I lose any data if change kernels? Also, are there any other benefits to changing Android kernels and will it still allow me to update my stock ROM via Kies or OTA like normal?
Switching kernels is easy. Is usually flash zip via CWM and that's it. If you want to make 100% that you got rid of all the remains of your old kernel you can flash jbroid script right before you flash (no reboot in between). Some kernels are only availale via Mobile Odin flash, but that's minority. Even then it's install Mobile Odin and flash kernel -> the end. Swithching kernels shouldn't affect anything unless it's some special kernel with unusual features. Just read the instrucitions carefully and make sure you flash TouchWiz kernels for stock and stock-based ROMs and AOSP/CM9 kernels for AOSP/CM9 based ROMs.
I would recommend trying Paranoidandroid anyways. The process is not much more complicated. Flash Abyssnote Kernel 4.2, reboot recovery (in Clockwork Recovery advanced options), wipe device (factory reset, format data, format dalvik cache), flash ROM and flash google apps. Reboot - done. You will lose S Pen partially but there are apps in the market working with S Pen and even recognizing button press (Papyrus Beta for instance). So the only thing that I've lost is double tap for instant note - I can live with that. Paranoidandroid features and performance make it up for me.
Good luck!
P.S. You will lose KIES and other Samsung apps if you flash PA. It's a CM9 based ROM, all the fancy stuff from Samsung is gone. Not that I miss it, since I've learned how to flash I never used all this crap anyways.

I can't wipe data though because of the brick bug and, as awesome as Paranoid Android is, I need the S-Pen apps (not so much Kies).

That is precisely why you flash Abyssnote Kernel just before flashing the ROM. It has no brickbug so wiping is safe. What other S Pen apps do you need apart from S Memo?

I use S-Memo to leave myself memos for homework tasks and other simple reminders. I enjoy cooking quite a bit, so when I find a recipe I like I compile it into S Note. S Planner I use frequently to set due dates for homework tasks, remind myself of friends' birthdays, and other important events. The S-Pen apps have ben a life saver when it comes to helping me organise my life.
I understand. In my own experience S Memo can be replaced by Papyrus, but my notes are rather simple so I don't know if it would work for you. I do use S Plannar A LOT (my work depends on it) and I don't see much difference if I'm using just plain stock calendar. Remember that S Pen still works on AOSP/CM9 ROMs like Paranoidandroid, just some things like gestures combined with button (which in all honesty I don't use at all) that don't work.
Warning. Flash paranoid while running on gb. If you flash it while in ics it will hardbrick your device.

Hi I am new to this "romming" business. For my u9000 I installed UtterChaos kernel .32. Most to the roms require .35 kernel. And when I try to install SUT LR 1.8 it never works with windows 8 64 bit. I do have CWM Recovery, and I do have superuser permissions. But for some reason when I try to flash a different kernel like CK Kernel Lebay edition, the whole device gets stuck at boot. Yes I have wiped data, cache and davlik. before doing so. I had to then remove the batteries and put them back to start the phone in download mode to replace the boot image from a back up then go do a CWM restore. And I have tried doing factory resets but the UC kernel boot wont change.
Bottom line is, I AM LOST and I will be using this phone for a long time and I can use a way out of this and I need to find a very fast and stable rom with all working features.
What I have:
- .32 kernel
- UtterChaos kernel
- Custom SU
- CWM Recovery
What I need (please help):
- To get rid of UC kernel (boot, etc...)
- .35 kernel (if possible)
- SUT LR for Windows 8 64bit (if possible)
- A really good rom for heavy gaming, performance, stability, something other than GB (preferably JB or ICS)
I may be asking for too much, and sorry if I am, but I can use some help with this phone right about now.
Thanks in advance!
My answer
You can get 35.7 kernel here, depending on what rom you wish to use. Just flash it along with your preferred rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1919097&highlight=kernel
For the rom, it really depends on your preference, because the performance is mostly the same between all the JB roms, smooth enough if you don't install lots of apps that stay in the background. Currently, I'm using the XperienceXperia JB rom. It's about as good as the other JB roms, just with Xperia stuff. Also, make sure that you don't put too much load on it, because it might freeze. No kind of software would be able to magically turn our phone into a gaming powerhouse, because it has an old, outdated gpu to start with. So, don't think about running games like Asphalt 8, because it probably wouldn't run.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2479460
I'm not aware of a Win8 x64 compatible SUT LR, but I don't think you'd need it for anything besides flashing stock roms.
By the way, what rom are you using now? If you flash a cm10 (JB) designed kernel to a GB rom, it would definitely cause problems.
Sorry for the long reply, I don't know how to make it simpler.
THANKS

I'm not sure about the order myself, but I usually flash the rom first, then the kernel. I do this everytime I want to flash a rom, and I've never had any problems. Have you tried flashing one of the JB roms for this device? If you haven't tried, remember to wipe data and cache before flashing the rom, and backup your current rom just in case something goes wrong.
Recently I have been facing 4 problems
1.Intermittent phone restart mainly while using Firefox browser
2.Poor battery life, need to charge twice a day
3.Phone becomes unresponsive,hangs
4.Cannot do video recording,be it on internal storage or even class 10 SD card with even low resolution ,the phone hangs.
The problems may get solved by factory resetting, but these things had happened before also when on gingerbread and factory reset helped, which means every six months I need to reset the phone. So I was planning to
1.Update or change to better Kernel, maybe might prevent phone restart problems
2.Install permanent custom recovery, so as to backup and be able to restore stock JB ROM
3.Update to Custom ROM running KitKat
I request help on
a.Procedure needed for backup and restore stock kernel, in case anything goes wrong
b.Recommended Kernel
c.Best stable KITKAT ROM(preferably 4.4.4) with least non working functions/features
Is it advisable to update to Kitkat?
What is the effect of increase in binary count? Is there a maximum count after which up-gradation is prevented?
My phone is rooted and out of warranty period.

a) Install "Universal Kernel Flasher" to backup Stockkernel or extract boot.img from your Stock Rom file.
b) If you want to use stock rom or a stock based rom, go for CoCore kernel.
c) There is a best rom thread. Just have a look.
I prefer vanir, paranoid and slimkat. Sadly, development of slimkat has stopped, but paranoid gets still updates and vanir is an offical rom with OTA updates. So the choice is yours
I like kitkat and it will not increase your binary counter.
If I flash CoCore Kernel will I be able to flash any of the custom Kitkat roms or there will be a limitation?

There is no limitations. Just on some you might need to flash its kernel first, by extracting kernel from ROM zip and installing it with Universal kernel flasher. Read ROMs thread (the one you want to install), it should be talking about it there.
One final question, I saved the stock kernel.bin file using Universal kernel flasher. How do I create a flashable zip file incase I custom kernel creates problem and phone refuses to boot

AnTuTu crash/random reboots
I think that "Dynamic Fsync" is the reason why some android applications (e.g. AnTuTu) force the device to reboot or to get force-closed. I will flash the kernel and disable dynamic fsync like this:
echo 0 > /sys/kernel/dyn_fsync/Dyn_fsync_active.
As far as I know the non-williams kernel does not have dynamic fsync in CM11 because "/sys/kernel/dyn_fsync/Dyn_fsync_active" wasn't found. I'll try it out. It might be that problem.
I hope so.
Flashing Williams kernel after Dooms kernel
Hi everyone,
it's my first post here so sorry in advance for such a noob question, but I really like to be sure when it comes to flashing my phone.
I followed this particular guide to install CM 11 nightly on my Xperia SP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55583797&postcount=2231
Now my question is, having the CM 11, can I just flash the Williams kernel just like that, without any additional procedure?
I'd like to add that my xperia is laggy as hell, going back to main screen takes even up to 10 second and it drives me insane. I heard that changing the kernel might just do the trick.
Thank you in advance for the answer!

this version is for Cyanogenmod on Unlocked Bootloader, if you are using a Locked Bootloader rom you have to install the V7, so be careful.
In unlocked version of CM11 this kernel cause freezes and random reboots because isn't synced with latest sources from CM, so don't install it, is unstable.
Well, I unlocked the bootloader already, so that's not a problem. I already flashed this kernel and followed the steps in the thread about tweeking the phone. Sadly, there's no great performance enchancement--there is some. The freezes were also present before flashing the new kernel and they are present now. I read that CM runs smoothly, better than stock firmware, meanwhile it looks like the stock was a bit better. I'm not saying it was flawless, but the freezes are just the worst...

As i said the Williams Kernel V5 is not synced with latest CM Sources, so it's unstable, it need to be updated, performance before latest Cm nightly were amazing with this kernel, and fauxsound is a killer feature.
I don't have any kind of freezes or lags on CM actually, i had freezes and lags in past with CM but it was due to my Xperia SP, it was faulty (Some problems with the internal NAND), after replacement, CM for me is really smooth and faster compared to the slowest stock that always hang launching apps.
i use it as daily rom from months...
So, if I downgrade to some earlier version of cm, like snapshot m11, the problems with performance should be gone, just like that?
Or maybe I should just think about replacing my xperia, since I can't go any faster than that.

Stuck on Cyanogen Recovery
Yesterday, I flashed some ROM only "test drive". Both Kitkat-based and Lollipop-based. I found that accidentally the recovery changed to Cyanogen recovery. Which is very very poor compare to other recovery. I only can flash official CM11.
I want to use Williams Kernel but I cannot flash it due to recovery limitation.
Anyone know how to get CWM recovery back? So I can flash this kernel.
I have tried several solution but no luck:
1. Flash boot.img with CWM recovery via fastboot (Back to Cyanogen recovery again)
2. Flash Dual Recovery CWM/Philz (flashing failed)
3. Flash CM11 LBL version with CWM recovery (flashing failed)
I know this is not directly related to the kernel but it makes the kernel cannot be flashed

Here is the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2704506
Hey guys, been a while since I've been here.
Currently, I'm running stock android 6.0.1 (N910FXXU1DPB1) on my Note 4 (Snapdragon).
I flashed this via Odin (because back then it wasn't released in my country yet). Did the usual, clean reset and when i flashed there were no problems (besides meh battery time). But since a week or two I'm having a lot of problems, a lot of random reboots, reboot time is way too long, battery drainage is awful and random freezes. A lot of these problems occur when using snapchat, not sure why.
So now I'm wondering what is the most stable ROM around. Battery life and smoothness are most important to me. At this point, I don't really care if it's a custom ROM or stock. With my old phone (S3) i had a lot of problems after i started running custom ROMs so I'm hoping you guys have some options where this won't happen.
Thanks in advance, Sam
BTW: Sorry for my bad English, it's not my main language.
Another weird thing happened. Just installed TWRP (once again via Odin), but when I reboot into recovery, I first get the message 'installing system update', then it says 'no command' and then it reboots in Android Recovery. Any ideas how to solve this?

I use and have been using Alexndr's ROM's for ages! They are reliable have plenty of options (root/no root, odexed/deodexed, xposed or not) ... he regularly updates and sorts out peoples' problems (although I have never had one) and produces a very stable ROM.
His instructions are clear and easily understood and he knows what he is doing! My favourite ROM maker ... Thanks Alexndr!!

Thanks for you reply.
Seems like a nice ROM, would want to flash it, but seems like I'm not going to be able to flash new ROMs (due to the problem described above.
I had the same problem. you must have the newest version of odin.

Seriously? Is it that simple lol? I'll try that, thanks.
EDIT: Turned out it wasn't that simple, got the message 'There's no PIT partition.'

I've been running Marshmallow on my N910C since it was released for my device, and I haven't experienced any major problems with it. Other than not getting the official OEM spare battery to charge correctly on it. Everything is work just fine.
I've been running the MM PaulPizz Rom for a few days and it's been rock solid so far. Not a single crash or error.

Another weird thing happened. Just installed TWRP (once again via Odin), but when I reboot into recovery, I first get the message 'installing system update', then it says 'no command' and then it reboots in Android Recovery. Any ideas how to solve this?

Try this. When in Odin, uncheck auto reboot, flash twrp, wait for it to finish, unplug phone, pull battery, then boot into recovery by holding vol up+home+power.
Recovery should stick
Also, double check you have right twrp. Even re download, maybe you got bad download

Thanks for your reply.
Alright man, I will try that tomorrow.
I think the download should be okay, downloaded V3.12.3 a few hours ago, or do I need a different one?
And should I also do this if I get the message that there's no PIT partition?
Thanks for your help, I'll let you know if it works or not.

I always use 3.11.1 straight from Sam mobile site. Here http://dl.sammobile.com/Odin3-v3.11.1.zip
Never had a problem with it.
Stock ROM's all the way.
I've used KK, LL and MM. After upgrading to MM (by mistake) and using it for 2 weeks, had to throw it away! MM is the worst case ever! I've went even back to KK, used about 2 days and went finally for 5.1.1 - best case ever! No lag, no "app stop working", no delay (which with MM was about 3 secs between opening closing apps). But, the 5.1.1 has a little distress about battery drain (about 5% more than KK or MM). Is the only thing is keeping LL for being best version. If you rollback from MM to LL or KK, you MUST untick Auto Reboot! Just let the flash go till the end and then take the battery out; put it back, start with recovery and wipe everything prior booting normally. And for the downgrade you have to use:
1. from MM to LL - Odin 3.11
2. from MM to KK - Odin 3.09
After trying myriad of roms(Almost all roms from Snapdragon section) + kernels, I prefer Stock rom for it's batterylife + stable performance. I haven't rooted after returning to stock. But i will return some sort of custom rom soon as my phone looks so boring without ported apps, multi dpi compatible apps, etc. If u prefer stable performance move to pure stock, If u need assortment of features use one of the ported note7/S7 roms, If u want slick and fast roms use AOSP/CM based roms but as far my experience goes they are not much stable while compared to touchwiz.
Currently running latest MM stock on 910G.

Using Odin 3.11 to downgrade from MM to KK works just fine. I just did 2 days ago.
I had errors with 3.11; once changed to 3.09 worked like a charm. I've posted from my experience. Anyway, good to know other opinions and good to know that works either way (maybe my system had some conflict with vs. 3.11). However, that downgrade was done only to my first device, not the second one. I still keep MM on my second N4.

This did the trick, thanks a lot! I finally got to flash TWRP and ended up installing Alexndr ROM (thanks for the tip @robmeik) but sadly I'm still having random reboots
