You must use an SD. And by rooting I assume you mean installing Cyanogenmod to replace stock. Rooting normally refers to adding root access to an existing ROM like stock. Both require an SD. That is because you must somehow get past the B&N encryption and a bootable SD is the only current way to do it.

The best option is flashing CyanogenMod to replace stock on the memory imo. SD cards are cheap so get yourself one and join the club!

[Q] Full Android HD+ As Yet???

As an original Nook Color owner from its first day availability, I am now ready to make the leap to the HD+. My primary reason for this is the 8.9 inch screen which emulates "trade paperback" size which has always been my reading goal along with enhanced video.
I have put my NC through numerous iterations over the last two years plus and finally did a full conversion to Android 4.1 a few months ago bidding a permanent farewell to any remaining vestige of the BN software. As the final remaining issue for me was "reading in store" which I no longer need, it was not a difficult decision.
In perusing this forum, I appear to have run afoul of trying to determine if there is a currently viable track for complete conversion of the HD+ eMMc as I simply do not need or want the BN interface. I know full well there are rooted, sdcard, and "hybrid" variations well explained in this forum but simply cannot find or continue to overlook any mention/instruction for full internal conversion as an option.
Am I simply overlooking that info or are we not yet there? If that goal has not yet been obtained, what would be my closest non sdcard option?
I have nothing but accolades and praise for those providing us with the fruits of their efforts. My multiple and varied experiences with my NC provided a truly fascinating experinece and learning curve starting with basic rooting up through several dual boot variations and now in eMMc Jelly Bean and all of its remarkably functional glory! It is clearly continuing with the HD and the "+" and I wish to express my deepest thanks for those continuing efforts in advance.
Any reasoned advice, suggestions, and/or direction would be appreciated.
As yet there is no full replacement of the emmc. The boot loader lock that even checks system makes it very hard.

Verygreenhas said he believes it is possible but not on his priority list, see his CM10 thread. We don't have many developers working it yet. And being CM working properly, kernels, etc are priorities now.

I too came from the Nook Color and have enjoyed the versatility of that device. Unfortunately B&N has locked down this device to make it more difficult to modify it. Your only two choices now is to modify stock with my CWM zips or opt for running CM10/CM10.1 from SD. You can get my CWM zips from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature.

Get the HD+ and put cm10 via sdcard on it. If you use the right sdcsard (class 4? someone will correct me if I'm wrong) and dont look back. I came from the nook color 10.1 emmc myself. I know how soul crushing it was on there. Lag, reboots, lag, poor display, lag. Did I mention lag? I'd like an emmc too, but seriously you won't notice any difference. Its an amazing tablet with cm10 on it.

I have also had the Nook Color and the Nook Tablet.. the Nook HD/HD+ are awesome. I have always choose to ditch the stock B&N expereince. Currently booting CM10.1 from mircoSD on my NookHD, thanks to some awesome work by others, and its honestly great! maybe a few tiny little lags every now and then, but nothing close to a deal breaker. And its still early... so it can only get better from here. Going HD or HD+, you won't be dissapointed.
Actually this is strange that we dont have still bootloader lock hack. All tech things that i seen on xda forum are ulocked. And now some BN can lock it
I want help but i dont have knowledge for this stage. And with other words i need it too (run custom rom from emmc)..

Verygreen says he thinks it can eventually be done, but his priority is perfecting CM on SD. He says no real need to run it internally when running on SD works so well.

Thanks to all for your comments, updates, and suggestions. I opted to take the "easy way out" this time around and d/l n2a's $19.99 version for the HD+ and installed it on a 32 GB card. Oddly enough, could not get it to run on a new Sandisk Class 10 but it ran on an older class 4 or 6 card that I had used for converted film storage with my NC. Any idea why that happened?
BTW, when formatting a card for the HD+ should we use FAT32 or NTSC?
It is great to have a full JB interface back!
Not at all enamored of the current BN interface which I hope now to leave alone and eventually replace when full eMMc access is achieved. If JB could be made "ready for prime time" on the NC, then I am sure that it is just a matter of time until one of you has a full blown "Eureka" moment and shows the way to a full and total conversion of the HD+.
Will keep you all up-to-date regarding my experiences with the N2A setup.

Actually i need run it internally because i have 12 Nook HD+ and clients who use these just may pull out SD (maybe steal SD too). All restrictions which one i made on ROm for user side is not working anymore.
Seems i need directly constact with Verygreen.
Thanks about sharing information.

Not sure what the above direction has to do with which format (FAT32/NTSC) is best for SDcard use in the HD+ for either simple storage or alternate OS.
Did I miss something or was I unclear?

This quote at this thread is about SD card formating:
For first time install only (you will need 4G or bigger sdcard, smaller ones are not supported and not tested):
gunzip cwm image and write it to your sdcard (entire sdcard not just one partition of it), use either dd on Linux/MacOS or Win32 Image Writer for those impaired by Windows.

And when you follow this guide step by step, you dont need worry about formating your SD to wrong format.

Not all cards are created equal. The recommended card for running a ROM is SanDisk class 4. Others may or may not work well.
And it does not matter what format you had on the card originally before you burned the image to the card. It gets overwritten.
But for using an SD with stock, the card should be formatted Fat32 or ExFat. NTSC does not work.

[Q] Unable to Backup to SD in CWM on Nook HD

Hello,
First off, thanks to e.mote for the CyanogenMod 10.1 for Dummies guide and to the work put in by verygreen, leapinlar and bokbokan. The guide was simple and straightforward, I installed CM10.1 and CWM (seemingly) without a hitch.
However, when attempting to do a baseline backup, I'm running into some problems. I've searched the forum overall and gone through pages and pages in the Nook sections and not found any real solution. On my 8GB HD, when rebooting to recovery and attempting to backup to an SD card, I'm having the following issues:
When CWM loads, I get a "warning: no file_contexts" message. I've read mixed things about whether this is significant or not and what to do to correct it.
When I go to backup and restore>backup it seems to backup to the SD card without a hitch (although it has shown differing amounts of free space on the cards whenever I've attempted this). But when I insert the card into my computer to copy the backup, the only thing on the card is a folder called "LOST.DIR" and all the space but 3.1MB is free. I've done this 3-4 times so far, with two different microSD cards (one 4GB, one 32GB). I've both checked it and formatted the card (in FAT32) on a computer running Windows XP and one running OSX. Same results on both every time.
At some point when attempting to do the backup, the screen of the Nook begins to flash/flicker and doesn't stop until I restart it.
The first time I tried to do the backup, after I tried to restart, it didn't boot back up and the power button was unresponsive. Possibly this was due to overheating? I plugged it into the charger and it started up on its own after about 10 minutes.
Anyone else encounter this? Any solutions. Obviously I want to be able to back things up. I just rooted the device this evening, so I'd rather to not have to go through the install process all over again rather than have a proper backup.
Thanks!

Ah, of course! Sorry, that's what I get for doing this so late. Okay, so it's installed to the internal memory. The files I downloaded were this and this. When I reboot into recovery is says "EMMC CWM-based recovery v6.0.3.6".
Thanks

Ah, ok. That means you have the newest version which puts the backup on internal memory. If you look at the menu choices closely, you will see it says to internal sdcard and the other choice is to external sdcard. So you will not find the backup on your external card.

Thanks! That'll teach me to just blindly follow instructions rather than looking around and exploring on my own - I didn't even notice the "Backup to External SD" option. So, thanks for your patience, your work on this and your speedy replies. Seems like all is well now.

install cm after rooting

Hi, i wanted to ask this to leapinlar in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613, but since i can't, i will ask it openly. I've rooted a Nook HD+ 2.2.0 following that guide succesfully. Now I would like to try out cyanogenmod, but just try it out so if possible i would to run a hybrid configuration without changing to much in the internal file structure. My goal is to be able to use the tablet without the high temps i get whenever i look at videos or even use the web browser in the stock os.
So, after following the guide from that thread what would be most simple way to install cyanogenmod? (i mean, without following the other guide which would mean doing a factory reset, getting a 4gb sd card and other stuff)
Thanks

Thanks leapinlar for your response, yeah that was the guide i was referring to, the "for dummies guide". So this would mean i have to get a 4gb sd card, do a factory reset, install CWM in the internal memory and everything else that is written there? (this would mean overwriting the root i already did?) Or can i just use the CWM sd card that i used for the root and install cyanogen from the zip?

The 'for dummies guide' is for putting CM on internal memory replacing stock. You said you wanted to leave stock alone and install to an SD. That is why I suggested one of bokbokan's SD ROMs in the dev forum.
But yes, you can use the CWM SD you created to do the root to install a CM ROM to internal memory replacing stock. Just follow the dummies guide after the creation of the CWM SD.

hi again, i've been using the hybrid install and now my SD card is full and the OS is slow (i can't see the files that are making it full)... should i expand the partition in the sd card? (it is 127 mb)
hi again, so today i had another problem: i had to restart the nook because the cyanogen OS froze and during boot the SD card was never detected... so i turned it off, got the SD card out and the nook did a factory reset on its own with which i lost all my data!
i am wondering if the root was also lost amd what should i do to prevent this from happening?

Yes, if the device reset, you lost everything, including root if you had it. The way to prevent the device from reseting is to not let it fail to boot 8 times in a row. Turn it off until you get an SD inserted that boots properly.

Installing Cyanogenmod - Why is a MicroSD needed ?

I've purchased a Nook HD+ and plan to root and rom it straight away. I have a Galaxy Note 2 and putting a new rom on is fairly straight forward and usually involves putting the required files on the internal memory and booting into recovery. Just wondered why most of the tutorials for the Nook involve using a 4Gb+ microSD ?

Because the Nook HD+ does not have a recovery that can be used to install new ROMs. The bootable CWM recovery SD is necessary to do that.

Ok thanks for that, if I get an microSD that is larger than 4GB is the rest of the space usable?. Lastly is it still the case that Class 4's work the best?

If you use my new procedure from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature (per item 1a), then you can use any size SD you want and it is all usable. But that being said, you want to use a relatively small SD (4-8GB) because you should save it for future CWM use and not use it for other things. You WILL need it again when things go wrong.
Yes, SanDisk class 4 work best.

on related note: after CWM use, how do i reclaim the microsd? Windows now thinks the card only has 4gb and reformatting it does not help. (If I'd known, i would have gotten a smaller capacity card).
Grab a program called sdformater not home don't have the link. Google will get it for you.

I'm confused on what files to actually download?!! any help please?
Advice please
kk so last night i had a go at the kit kat tutorial.
Think I got the right files in the end. (see attachment photo)
Managed to get CWM flashed on the 32gb micro SD and insert it into the Nook and reboot it into recovery.
Then i needed to back up stock OS to SD but it goes through the process but at the end it says no EXT SD found.
So it has the back-up on the internal memory which i cannot get off.
Why did it not back up to EXT SD?

That EXT SD it says it cannot find is not the external SD you are thinking of. It is looking for an old scheme not used anymore where apps sometimes were stored in an extra partition named that on the external SD. Your backup was probably stored on the external SD. It depends on which option you chose when you made it. If you chose the wrong option it might be stored on the internal memory. In any case it is easy to get it off.
