Brand New To Moto X Rooting. Help? - Moto X Q&A

Hey guys I'm new to rooting my moto x. I have a White Moto X on sprint running 4.4.2
Boot loader=Locked (I can unlock it)
Can anybody point me in the right direction to rooting my moto? Thanks. Any links would be helpful

you have to unlock your bootloader first , install a custom recovery and then flash the supersu file in order to root it.
bootloader unlock : https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
custom recovery : http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/development/recovery-unlocked-twrp-2-6-3-1-android-t2534850 or this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/development/xt10xx-philz-touch-t2612149 and then flash the supersu file . Google if you are confused and correct me if i am wrong. All the best and happy Flashing

What is the past of least resistance to root a 4.4 tmo X? In order to keep data, is it still that insanely long process?

Bump............
WIth the T-Mobile variant you have two choices to root..
1. Unlock bootloader, flash twrp recovery, boot into twrp and install SU (or use TWRP's option to root). But this voids your warranty (since you don't have the developer edition), and unlocking the boot loader will wipe your device and data.
2. Use SlapMyMoto which has a lot of manual steps, and you need to reboot to "recovery" (well its modified and you don't have recovery), when you want R/W ability. (Or you have to also do the MotoWpNoMo process to gain R/W full time). But this has many steps.

thanks - re #1, will upgrades be painful i.e., new OTAs?

OTA's will be more painful with #2 as there will be more to restore to stock. And of course the unknowns of if the new OTA will be rootable or not, and how long before a root process comes out.
For #1, you should be able to just put stock recovery back and take the OTA, then reflash TWRP and re-root.

You can unlock the Sprint & Tmo version. No dev edition required.

Same with Rogers, only versions that can't unlock are Verizon and AT&T consumer version

Well, if you don't have an unlocked bootloader, SlapMyMoto (which now incorporates the MotoWpNoMo process into its steps) is the only way (there have been some efforts to consolidate/automate the process). And may not be usable if you're already on 4.4.2 (taking the 4.4.2 OTA update or flashing the full 4.4.2 SBF prevents you from flashing older ROMs which is a crucial step in using SlapMyMoto).
I've not see a 4.4.2 specific root process for locked bootloaders yet, but to be honest, I have a unlocked bootloader, so I haven't been completely paying attention.
If you have an unlocked bootloader, root process is still the same.
there is not going to be any new way to root 4.4 is not going to get a new exploit because 4.4.2 is out and Devs are working on finding a way to root it so the people with locked bootloaders can update.
if you want to root your device you have allready been giving the only 2 ways to do it
Locked bootloader - SlapMyMoto
Unlocked bootloader - Customer Recovery and SUPERSU
please dont bump your thread for info you allready have.
here is a link to both guides for both methods and a guide for unlocking your bootloader.

[Help] Moving from a locked bootloader with root to an unlocked bootloader

I would like to move the current state of my phone from a locked bootloader with root and write protection off to an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery. I have the US Cellular Moto X currently on 4.4. I have not a clue where to begin this process. If anyone can point in the right direction or if this is covered in another thread, please show me.
Couple of notes. I do not need steps to unlock the bootloader, just if someone has done it & the basic steps to accomplish it.
You can root without unlocking the boot loader?
Yes & I am root & I have system write off. I have a locked bootloader. I want to go from my current state to having an unlocked bootloader with a custom recovery. Reason why is because I want to be able to flash zips of some certain apps that require to only be flashed via a custom recovery. I would also like to try some custom roms out.

Go to Moto's website to request an unlock code, then follow steps found in the FAQ/guide.

Thank you. I just didn't know if there was a step required before using the moto unlock being that I was root/system write pertection off already. I'll see if my phone is unlockable from moto's site.

Just remember unlocking wipes everything, from there you need to flash twrp with mfastboot and finally root with superuser

[Q] Safestrap with 4.4 non-dev edition?

Has anyone successfully installed and used Safestrap with 4.4 Kitkat (Non-Developer Edition)? Looks like Safestrap 3.65 works but I am not seeing a lot of chatter about it. Please share if you have! Thanks!

Ok dumb question, but I'm still trying to learn here.
*a bit of background
Rogers 4.4.2 moto x
Locked boot loader
No root
Dead stock
*
There are 3 custom recoveries for the Moto X I've found out about so far.
TWRP and CWM (used Clockwork on all my other rooted devices) but these are specifically for unlocked boot loader device. Unlocking the boot loader doesn't seem that difficult (just go to the Motorola website I believe (I have the Rogers XT1058 so it should work )).
Then there's Safe Strap. Supposedly you don't have to have the boot loader unlocked for this to work so this seems like an easier method to gain custom recovery.
Now my dumb question(s):
Is the only difference the need if the boot loader to be locked or unlocked?
Do I need to run slap my moto or a similar tool to disable write protection?
The main question really:
I am really interested in Gravity Box! Would SafeStrap be the way to go? Or do I need to go through Slapmymoto, TWRP or CWM and go from there?
Any help is greatly appreciated! Still trying to learn about what's what because I love this phone but really just want to get rid of the navigation bar and have PIE controls for a full screen mode
Thanks everyone! Good day to all!

Since you're updated to 4.4.2 you will need to unlock your bootloader to root the phone(which also voids the warranty on a Rogers phone).
Once it is unlocked install whichever custom recovery you prefer and have fun modding.

Steve-X is right because you are not rooted right now you wont be able to install safestrap.
your only option if you want root is to unlock your bootloader.
but if you do that you have a choice of Clockwork mod or TWRP custom recovery.(me personally i would not use safestrap on a unlocked bootloader)
if you dont want to unlock your bootloader then im sorry to say there is no root option for you right now or custom recovery's
if you do thou rooting your phone is very simple
unlock bootloader
install customer recovery of your choice
flash SuperSU
then you have Root.

Awesome thank you so much! I was worried that I had to work around write protection and all that. I've found the TWRP forum for this device so I think its time to do a bit of reading!

Cool! Well the phone is a Rogers device but I don't have a warranty just because I unlocked it and took it to a different carrier (bought on Craigslist for $275). Man I was worried about a ton of other stuff to use. Thanks for your help!

I created a ROM slot for it. I've used safestrap with my gs4 so I know how it works. I created a ROM slot then flashed eclipse on that ROM slot rebooted and go the dead android with the red triangle warning.

I didn't know. So you can only flash it on the stock slot? And if any thing just revert back with rsdlite? I've used Odin and it seems like its the same thing.

[Q] Can I root my phone?

I've looked around at the forums and I'm actually quite confused by it all so I'm hoping I can get a straight answer.
I have a GSM Moto X Dev Edition on 4.4.2, can I root it?
If so, which of the tools could I use to root it?
Thanks!
You can root. You need to unlock your bootloader first.
Use this thread to install a custom recovery. You need to follow this exactly like it says.

Build number : KXA21.12-L1.26
System Version : 212.44.26.ghost_row.AsiaRetail.en.03
rom: 4.4.4
If you flash a compatible custom recovery you just need to flash supersu and your rooted.
But read more first. Super easy to do right... Even easier to do wrong. Root/unlocked means your responsible for your phones well being and nothing will be holding your hand.
