Is it just me or is not possible to flash a recovery, like TWRP from fastboot? I've been reading a bunch of guides online and tried at least a dozen different ways to install a recovery from fastboot all to no avail.
That said, I CAN successfully flash a recovery from Hasoon's all in one toolkit and from a app like twrp/cwm/flashify after installing a rooted rom. So the fact that I can't get it to work from fastboot, yet it works perfectly fine with this pre-made program has been bugging the living **** out of me. I'll list the two processes I use below so please tell me either they are incorrect or perhaps it's just simply not possible to install TWRP or other recoveries from fastboot.
I have tried each of these processes with versions ranging from TWRP 2.5-2.7 and none of them will work, each time I flash them and attempt to access the recovery it will say in pink lettering above "entering recovery..." then it just reboots the phone, occasionally the teamwin loading screen will pop up but then it simply disappears and reboots.
Anyways here's the processes I've tried
1. in the cmd prompt I do 'fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img' then reboot the bootloader and go to the recovery.
2. in the cmd prompt I do 'fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img' then do 'fastboot erase cache' and restart the bootloader then attempt to enter recovery.
These are the two slightly different processes I've tried, each time it appears as though it's working in the cmd prompt but then when I go to start the recovery it just reboots the phone. Also incase you're wondering, I did rename each of the recoveries to TWRP all uppercase before attempting the flash them).
If you have any ideas please let me know, although this isn't too big of a deal this has been bugging me a lot!

The bootloader is unlocked. Flashed aman recovery and adb said it was successful. Tried adb "reboot recovery recovery.img" and can't seem to get it to boot into recovery. Cannot boot into full recovery mode to flash any rom or root updates. Just shows the android next to the can. What's missing?
Like to finish rooting the device.
*Edit* Finally rooted. What a PITA without Paul's Superboot. Seems the recovery image didn't take even after it was successful. Was able to get into recovery immediately after another flash, then installed the signed rom for 91.
Will re-think this procedure and post something so others can get it figured out without all the hoopla. The process is simple (after you have done it a few times) but the $500 screw-up factor makes people a bit nervous. Now I can load a rom manger and horse around with different versions. Time for a beer. Thanks to the forum friends who posted replies to some of my other posts. Putting the pieces together finally got things done.
It's very hard to screw it up since you are not replacing the bootloader or something like that. It might not boot to anything but the bootloader but from there you can always recover it.
It looks like you confused adb with fastboot. You can 'fastboot boot recovery.img' or 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img'. To just reboot to recovery from a running phone or via ADB you can run 'reboot recovery'.
I think it was simple the seldom mentioned fact that a stock-rom will reflash your recovery during boot if it has changed because of the scripts install-recovery.sh and recovery-from-boot.p. Removing them stops this behaviour.
If not for the last part, I think it would've went smooth for you even without superboot.
Ok I have an issue, I tried to install a ROM using TWRP and after it finished installing I rebooted and got stuck in a boot loop on the bootloader screen (the screen you get to when you hold down the power button and down on the volume). I read online somewhere that I have to relock and unlock my phone which I proceeded to do, but as you may know that deletes everything off of your SD card. Then I went into cmd and used the code
fastboot wipe cache
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
I can now get into TWRP but I have no rom to restore to, no back up and when I go to Advanced Adb Sideload, then swipe to download it says
"Adb Sideload Complete" (at the top)
"Failed" (in red right below it)
I know I have to do something with adb or fastboot, but when I type Abd Devices into cmd I get the picture below which says:
List of devices attached
FA34PS901853 recovery
I cant adb push or install and I have NO clue what to do
But im pretty sure that I somehow have to reinstall Superuser so some help with that would be much appreciated as well
PLEASE O PLEASE can someone help me with this
So I recently tried to flash TWRP onto my HTC 626 and it seems like everything went well except a completely random group of inputs just loads my phone into fastboot list as follows:
Trying to enter recovery mode from menus
Trying to enter recovery mode from adb
Trying to perform a factory reset from menus
Plugging the device into a pc while powered off
The phone can still boot into the os and it runs just like normal. I have been frantically googling the problem but I have no idea what is going on.
I would have just done a reset but it just loads into fastboot.

Guess what? I just might be able to save the day, mighty mouse style. Are you ready for this?
Try this out and see if it works for you like it worked for me.
But before you do this, I am on the MM-update android 6.0.1...this was what I used for this particular os. If you've update to Marshmallow already, please continue with the following......
Download these files first to your pc.
Twrp recovery - https://goo.gl/sO4Huz
BETA-SuperSU-v2.62 - https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24269982087018189
Credit to my buddy IsaacGuti for the files.
fastboot flash the recovery
Make sure to either rename the Twrp recovery image to "recovery.img" before flashing or be sure to type the exact name of the twrp image file name verbatim. I'd suggest renaming it to "recovery.img just to be on the safe side.
in command prompt, it should look like this when you type it in "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" without the parenthesis
( "<----These guys to the left....don't add those in)
To make it easier, just copy and paste what's in the parenthesis into the command prompt.
flash the supersu.zip in recovery. (Meaning after the flashing of the recovery is successful, then reboot into TWRP recovery to flash BETA-SuperSU-v2.62) But Don't forget to move the BETA-SuperSU file to your internal sd on your device.
If you've done all of this, you should have success. Just send me a virtual HI-5 and we're all good:highfive:
I only wanted to get root. I used to root phones with one click, but not this.
I unlocked it by doing various stupid things, then using fastboot.exe installed a custom recovery file with this command: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img.
Everything was succesfull.
Now when i want to get to recovery mode i see red text on HTC logo that is saying "this is for development purposes etc etc". It flashes for less than one second and go back to that menu when you can select Recovery mode.
How to fix it.
I've on an older version of Android. I've never had a problem using TWRP on other phones but due to the lack of having it on my Pixel 4XL, I've just never had it.
I haven't upgraded in ages, I see we have a working TWRP now. I tried to flash it via Magik and I think I flashed the wrong one.
My phones stuck in a boot loop mode and IF I can get to the screen that says "fastboot mode", I cant do anything with it.
"adb devices" returns nothing so I cant even attempt to flash the correct recovery.
Help!

When you get to the screen that says "fastboot mode", do "fastboot devices", not "adb devices". If that works, flash the boot image with "fastboot flash boot boot.img". Make sure the boot.img matches what you had on the phone before breaking it. Either the stock boot.img or magisk patched boot image should work, but you'll loose root with the stock boot.img.
It is best to boot TWRP without installing it. "fastboot boot twrp.img".
Hey.
Yeah check "fastboot devices". If you get something on terminal, use Google flash tool to reflash the original firmware, this will repair any damaged/corrupted file.
If you don't get anything your phone is very likely bricked. You can still try the emergency mode but I believe it won't work. In this case there is still a way to recover your phone, and it's using the EDL mode(which is contain in every phone that has a Qualcomm Chipset). From there you can force flash firmware and boot image.
Tell me how it goes
OK I got TWRP working.
Phones updated to September 2021, turned out I was still on March 2021! Anyway, all updated, rooted etc!
Thanks very much folks!
Nice

Glad to know that my habit of fastboot booting twrp images on 2XL will keep me safe here on 4XL too
