Custom Kernels? - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
I have searched and didn't find any obvious thread that discussed kernels for our device. I'm on the stock rooted 4.4.2 leak. Are there any kernels out there that might work for our device?

No. The bootloader is locked on this phone so you cannot use custom kernels or AOSP ROMs. You're stuck with the stock kernel until the bootloader is unlocked, which will never happen.

Bootloader

Just a general question really, is it worth unlocking my bootloader?
Not many custom kernels around so I guess it's only cm10 based Roms everything else seems stock based?

Its up to you.
I imagine soon there will be custom kernels with abilities such as UC/OC/UV etc
If you can root the phone without unlocking the bootloader and dont want to install CM then I would wait untill some new kernels come along.
On stock jb at minute flashed as soon as I got it not rooted yet though might do that later,

[Q] Can I install this ROM with locked bootloader?

Hello,
Am I able to install ROMs that are stock based if I do not have unlocked bootloader?
I am specifically talking about this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2180208
Thanks!
I don't think so,maybe later the dev will release a version for locked bootloader.

Okay thanks for the quick answer.
I just got confused because I checked this thread about ROMs
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2171958
And on the first 3 it specifically mentioned [Unlocked Bootloader] and the 4th did not say that, so I figured I might be lucky^^
Since there isn't a CWM recovery for locked bootloaders yet there is no way to flash ROMs with a locked bootloader. Once there is it will just be a case of flashing the ROM and then the stock Sony kernel.

[Q] What ROMs can I use with a locked bootloader (I have a C6606)?

I've been searching around, but can't seem to find a straight answer on all ROM's. Which ROM's are usable with a locked boot loader? Thanks in advance.
Edit - Done some more reading... Can I do anything with a locked boot-loader really? Or am I forever limited to 4.1.2 based ROMs?
Take a proper look in the Android development forum dude!
There are loads of ROMs you can flash on a locked bootloader. Generally the ROM will say LB/UB and must be a modified stock ROM.
The only ROMs you can't flash are cyanogenmod/Aokp /aosp based ROMs.
Or upgrade to 4.2.2. with a stock tft via flash tool.

Thanks so much, sorry im new to sony bootloaders. So if I upgrade to 4.2.2 I can flash cyanogenmod/aosp Roms? I really want to use parandroid... Or is that impossible as of currently? Also, will the boot loader eventually get unlocked? I'll probably end up returning this phone if its not possible for a long time. Again thanks.

Do not flash paranoid on your phone with a locked bootloader , you will brick your phone.

Alright I see. Thanks. Hopefully there will be an unofficial bootloader unlock for this phone eventually.

Custom Recovery Questions

Hi All,
I'm new to Xda developers forums, pardon me asking. I did was follow the SlapMyMoto/RockMyMoto thread and had sucessful rooting on stock kit kat at&t. I searched the threads for custom recovery for 4.4 since safestrap is not supported on 4.4.
Any one know which custom recovery works with, device is not unlocked bootloader.
Thanks in advanced!
No unlocked bootloader, no custom recovery.
I'm using safestrap fine on 4.4, but I'm still on a 4.2 bootloader.

[Q] Why does Locked Bootloader Matter?

So I have the AT&T S5 with a locked bootloader. I rooted it, put safestrap on it, and installed a custom ROM. Now I read that the Tmobile S5 has an unlocked bootloader, but given that I can root and install custom ROMs, why is the Tmobile variant any better? Also I read locked and encrypted used interchangeably regarding the bootloader, perhaps they are both locked but not encrypted?
Lastly, does an unlocked Tmobile S5 work seamlessly on the AT&T network, it appears the LTE bands overlap so I'm guessing so. Is there a good reason to sell the AT&T variant and get the Tmobile one?
Ungh, stupid AT&T.
You can only flash custom roms based on the stock kernel. With a locked bootloader you'll never be able to flash an aosp rom.

Nor will we be able to flash 4.4.4(or later) when it becomes available. We are stuck waiting for att to release an update, and then we might lose root.

Does this mean that the custom roms that are installed are still ultimately based on the original G900A one, or at least the kernel is the same?

Basically, yes.
The recent OTA will update the kernel and firmware, right? But does towelroot still work? Is it likely that the bootloader will be more difficult to break later if I do update?
