[Guide][Mod]Change Data and statusbar buttons to any carrier - Galaxy S 5 General

Hey everyone! I posted this a while ago on the T-mobile forums. I just figured that I would post it here to since it was confirmed working on the international version as well. This probably works on any variant of S5...
Just wanted to right a quick guide on how to change the statusbar icons to any other carrier since I have not seen this anywhere. Some people may like them a little better then T-mobile. I have seen mods that do this but it is actually as easy as a few build.prop changes.
Please note: These may cause more subtle changes as well since it basically fools the device into thinking its that carrier. The main change is the data icons, but some carriers also put there network on the left of the statusbar (at&t) and other things
Just simply use a file manager with root (recommend ES Explorer) and navigate to /system. Then open up the build.prop file in a text editor (after making a backup first of course). All you need to do is change the following lines to whatever you would like..
T- Mobile
Code:
ro.product.name=kltetmo
ro.product.device=kltetmo
AT&T
Code:
ro.product.name=klteatt
ro.product.device=klteatt
Verizon
Code:
ro.product.name=kltevzw
ro.product.device=kltevzw
Sprint
Code:
ro.product.name=kltespr
ro.product.device=kltespr
Then just save the file and reboot! I will update with pictures eventually if I get the chance. Also if you change it to anything else then it will change your data icons to the stock aosp icons (with the H+ icons) There maybe a few more too for other carriers but haven't tracked them down yet. Enjoy!

[29.May.11][MOD] 4G LTE? I think so. Check this thread out for 4G on the HTC HD2!

CAUTION: This has only been tested on NAND Android, more specifically HTC Desire and Desire HD builds, but should theoretically work on any build, NAND or SD.
If anyone's courageous enough to try for SD, take your shot. Otherwise wait for my signal.
How to get 4G LTE for your HTC HD2!
This thread does not actually provide 4G like speeds, rather it changes the 3G icon (or HSPA icon, ask me for instructions) on the status bar to 4G LTE icon.
It's really useless if you think about it, but it's a fun way to fool your friends and fam into thinking your phone is a 4G phone.
Screenshots below will clarify:
I took it from Ben's thread from the Droid X forums, he's just amazing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=923112
You can thank me but be sure to thank him x10!
And of course the video tutorial, once you watch the first 3min or so, everything just makes sense. If there are enough requests, I'll throw out a similar step by step guide to this thread, but most of us, I'm sure, would prefer the visual guide.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83t2ZHJu1QQ&feature=related
NOTE: Put the .png files into the root of your SD card, not a folder like what the tutorial guide had done, it will not work unless in the root of the SD card.
You will need the market application NinjaMorph, and it's free.
PNG files attached in the links below. (yes it's really that easy, replacing PNG files with other PNG files)
Be sure to setup backups for your roms, whether NAND or SD.

Mods, I realize that I'll probably need to rename this thread. Since this is my first official thread, how do you rename the title?
Double-Clicking the title does allow me to select the title but I can't rename it because double-clicking just brings me into the thread.

G = 3G
not only am i happy with the way my phone now looks, but its a conversation piece.
@xftox
if your using his gingerbread 2.3+, then this will be in your SystemUI.apk located in your "System\app\"
people using froyo 2.2+, this should still be in your framework-res.apk.
don't quote me on any of this, see for yourselves.

Thanks man for the review, I was hoping somebody had a similar mindset to mine. xD
Fooling your friends with a 4G LTE phone.
For some reason though, on startup, I get a message saying process system is not responding, and have two options: "force close" and "wait".
I guess this seems like more of a sense issue, fix permissions might solve it.
Thanks for the help guys much appreciated

Glad you do bro. You understand what I'm sayin.
It's just a fun little idea and just makes your phone seem that much more interesting. I can now say my phone is 4G, and have the proof to prove it! teehee.
BTW, check Ben's thread everyone, there are more color options for the 4G icons, the ones I posted are white; but you can get red, black, blue, even gingerbread green in his thread for your own phone customization.
Thank you very much! I will definitely have to try this out.

"VZW" 2.3.6 ROM - UPDATED 2/23/12 Themed

INSERT USUAL DISCLAIMER HERE. I THINK (HOPE) YOU ALL KNOW THE RISKS BY NOW. Blah blah brick, blah blah not my fault, you know.
Well, using Willis111's Canadian Bell 2.3.6 build from here, somemadcaaant, ZOMBI3, and I have been slowly patching this up to work on the XT862.
I've made up a stock (tweaked for VZW) 2.3.6 ROM and a lightly debloated one as well. Both have the same build.prop tweaks for battery life, the usual wifi scan, as well as the camera video modes tweak, plus some other stuff tacked onto the end of the build.prop.
What we changed was the build.prop (IIRC, I used a Liberty3 one that I touched up to my liking), eri.xml inside framework_res.apk, and libmoto_ril.so to get this up and running on the XT862. Since, I have added in 5.7.905 system apps to get some things running (MMS messaging mainly).
I have flashed these without a wipe (over SD 4.5 I think) and it seems to be fine, although I've only had it running maybe an hour now, so I can't attest to battery life. It may be fine without a wipe, it may be better with it. IDK.
One note for HandCent users, go into HC, menu> settings> application settings> default messaging application> all(sms & mms). This should fix double texts.
NOT WORKING:
It seems the first boot bootloops. Just battery pull and restart. It should boot. I'm running this debloated build exactly.
My stock camera FCs when entering panoramic mode. 3rd party apps such as ProCapture still work. This will be addressed after I get 1% battery and power menu buttons added (Thanks to BuckMarble!)
Here's the links to my DropBox.
Bloated 02/23/12 20:04

1% Mod Still getting reboots, experimental only
Dark Theme (incomplete theming, WIP)

Working 1% Mod
Dark (WIP) & light theme
Power button reboot options
Pulldown power widgets
Pulldown music controls??
...and, I know how to do none of those. Anyone wanna do it or teach/guide me though it?
Oh boy! I can teach the reboot and 1% stuff(gotta dig up the code for this one, been a while) I've recently become quite the android.policy master. Lol. As for the messaging stuff, im not sure where to go with that one.
EDIT: noticed quite a few com files missing from the framework folder that our xt862 uses. Compare an xt862 vzw rom to this one and try patching in the missing ones and see if that helps with the messaging. In system/framework.

Touched up the /system/framework folder with the missing files. If it isn't apparent already, I'm pretty new to this and really don't have too much of an idea of what I'm doing. Oh well, gotta learn somehow!
EDIT: Well, this didn't fix MMS, but it couldn't have hurt. Also, I've been getting some FCs from conversations.apk when receiving a text. I'll look into it tomorrow and keep working at this.

Nice work,
@jchenny i'd prefer a bloated version to go nuts on anyways.
Definately deserves it's own thread to be sure, you will have reboot/screenshot power menu functions plus power widgets and whatever else is needed on the weekend unless some1 else wants to get it done? Looking at you buckmarble and ZOMBI3, i'm using my phone for oncall work this week.
Again awesome release, can't wait to try it.
Edit: Grab my giant APN list apns-conf.zip from my sig link below and see if that fixes mms, most providers have been added manually... could simply be the conversations app not working correctly with the cdma buildprop commands changed and/or rot.mot.phonemode.vzwglobalphone=1, swap out with the vzw versions of conversations.apk, mms.apk, messaging.apk, might also have to swap out the bluremail.apk, bluremailengine.apk and blursnmessagingengine.apok or perhaps use the aosp versions?
Could it be a google restoring settings thing, always gives me grief when i forget this after flashing lol.

I can get the power menu/widgets/etc stuff in. Would rather teach red how to do it though. Expand the knowledge base of the new developers. I like to give back what I've learned so that at some point we can all help each other. Hopefully your apn stuff fixes the mms problem he's got.

@SMC, where is that APN list in your sig?
As I play with this, I'm going to try tossing together a build for myself (and others?) to test with 5.7.905 deodexed system apps from ZOMBI3's .zip. Also, Hash has a deodexed 5.6.890 build on his blog right? I'm blocked here on the school network.

I believe I have the freshest build on my DropBox. IIRC, I removed messaging.apk and dropped in mms.apk and that enabled MMS messaging. For my purposes, it's a fully working build. I haven't had any errors. Keep me updated if you hit any.
I think I'm going to start adding a time stamp to my .zips, I can't keep them straight. (Now I've added date and time stamps to preserve my sanity, or what remains.)
Oh yea! This is getting themed! I taught myself UOT Kitchen (it's so easy) and applied a META-INF workaround listed on their site to fix a flashing error and it's looking great. And is it just me, or does this boot quickly? Maybe I don't pay attention...
New links in OP.

I remember having media player control status widgets, or what ever its called, on my old LG optimus 2x and I liked it, very convenient - maybe we can port that over or use code, like adding the controls to the far right as you scroll thru.
If that's makes sense.
Definitely lots of performance tweaks in there for boot, memory and gui speed.

I definitely want to implement more tweaks for battery life, speed, etc. Also, the 1% mod wasn't playing nicely with services.jar and causing reboots, so I marked that as experimental. I'm talking to BuckMarble on GTalk and he's helping me do this since my current knowledge is minimal in comparison.
EDIT: I'll be trying this later...

[TWEAK] Increase Network Speeds By Using Sprint Spark [WIP]

I stumbled upon a thread in the N5 forums where they needed to go in and manually enable bands 26 and 41 on their devices in order to enable Sprint Spark (network speeds of 50-60mbps).
I followed their instructions on my S4 and low and behold, we have the LTE programming menu containing "enable band 26" and "enable band 41" in it. I have my MSL, so I tried to edit it, but every time I check the boxes to enable the bands, the settings don't stick.
I'm currently running TriForce 4.0 (4.3) and I have this option. I'm still working on a few things but thought some people could collaborate here so we can get this going. I don't see why our phones wouldn't support the new network. If it's a hardware limitation, someone please enlighten me.

I don't think the hardware is there to support it; that's why they are coming out with the SPH-L720T model which adds the two LTE bands (but loses VoLTE unfortunately).
This sort of thing has been done before... T-Mobile did something similar with the S3 - releasing a late variant which added LTE support.
I took the ota to 4.3...when I view my settings it shows band 26 and 41 already enabled.

Samsung can't have the device use those bands without having it approved by the FCC first so I went back to the FCC docs to see if Samsung sought band 26 and 41 support to the SPH-L720 since it was initially approved and they haven't. My guess is that the 720 and 720T may share the same firmware and that's why you are seeing that. Either that or they have started selling the 720T and that's the one you have (though I didn't think they did that yet).

Doh! That should have been "no support for SVLTE" instead of VOLTE. Sprint's network doesn't support VoLTE yet.
It doesn't lose VoLTE... VoLTE isn't hardware related its just any type of VOIP program but on LTE.. Or at least I think so

The topic of the post that was linked in the OP was for a Nexus 5. This is a Galaxy S4 forum section. Therefore you have to use the code ##3282# instead of *#*#3282#*#* on the S4. [Not Confirmed:] You also must be using the MJA modem in order to access these new bands.
Edit:
Go to this post to learn how to get your MSL.

What's the point of all this if the hardware in the current S4 variant can't support it? It's like putting a rocket engine button inside a Toyota Corolla. You can press it a hundred times but it still won't make flames come out the back of the car.
Im on Triforce 4.1 MJA and i do not see these band options. Yes i did ##3282# and i do have my msl.

Alright time to get in on this topic, I have a question. I have a sprint s4, im rockin the mja modem,on sac's 4.2 rom and have input the dialer code and do see band 26 and 41, I checked the boxes and when I did it went from [off] to [on] but once I back out and re-enter where these options are the boxes remain checked but state its [off].
So does this mean I enabled the bands, but at the moment there off cause I'm not in a area that supports these bands ? ( can't clarify weather I am in a area that supports these bands or not just guessed this is why this is happening).
Thanks in advance

Idk if that answer is directed at me or not but if so...I've changed a few things in this section (##3282#) a few times in the past such as ehrpd,multimedia,data profile and so on and have never saved my choices after making changes they've always just stuck.
Although saving them does make sense but there is no such option. If I were to press the settings button while in this menu nothing pops up? The choices I made do stick to a extent like turning on LTE the box stays checked and it does stay [on] but as for the bands...the boxes stay checked but don't stay [on].
(Screenshot attached).
Which brought me to To the conclusion that i enabled them but there currently off at the moment due to me not recieveing a signal from these bands due to me not being in a supported area..just a guess though, I can't confirm weather I am in a supported area or not.
NOTE:This isn't how these options are I cropped 3pics and made em into one fyi

Lol at activating bands on a phone that doesn't have them. :what:
Since I don't want to type something I've already written in the past I'll just leave a link to a similar discussion on another forum. Read my reply there at the end. It also applies here.

Wow! Very disappointing to hear but good to know that the phones you listed in the other thread are tri-band supported. I'll keep that in mind when I decide to upgrade my sprint s4.
So LTE and EHRPD is the most I'm gunna see out of this device huh....bummerrrr but I'm still happy with it just looking to get even more out of my device and my hands on but no worries.
Thanks again for clearing that up,

Enable removed Bluetooth tethering (Solved)

Ok, I know many of us USA users have had bluetooth tethering removed. And we all want it back.
I found this thread here that shows how to unlock it but for the Galaxy S3, I am sure the same methods would apply to us on the note3.
I have tried, but I don't have any luck recompiling the files. So if anyone wants to take the plunge and do this for us.
Here are the unmodified files for the Note3 USA TMobile
Update: I have installed and am using the DRAGONSAIR V3 rom. (Thanks AndieRoid for the info, And Thanks to dragonstalker for the ROM)

Possibly, But waiting for someone who has time to try and edit the framework to see if it unlocks.
I've checked through threads in US devices for s4 and note3, but no one seems to have much of a need to even be interested in looking into you. I'd say you'll still have more luck asking in device specific threads than here though
Your carrier may also have blocked it even if you could add it...

That would be wonderful if we could. AT&T= Lock Boot loader, so we have to do things the hard wary.
ATT Note 3 here with no native BT tethering in settings. I tried modifying the apk as per the tutorial with no luck. Going to try and decompile some framework apks from different Note 3 ROMs and compare to ATT version and see if I can make something work. Not too sure what else to do for now.
Edit:
Attempted to look at other Note 3 ROMs' frameworks-res.apk file. The tutorial says to add this entry: "<item>bnep\\d</item>" All of the Note 3 ROMs have a different entry "bt-pan" instead. Tried with both entries and neither is giving me the Bluetooth tether option so there is something else we are missing so we can get Bluetooth tether to show up.

Just flashed it to my note 3 tmoble USA,
It shows bluetooth tethering on the note 3, enabled it. Seem like it will work, just no way to test it as my gear does not show the setting. Trying wipe and null 11.1 I will report back soon.
Update: Still no bluetooth internet option on the gear. Must mean the note is not sending it. Any idea?
looking into it i dont have a gear to test

When it says it connected it pops up the usb tethering info

I'm not sure if this helps anyone, but the only way I got bluetooth tethering on my T-Mobile Note 3 was to install DragonsAir v3 ROM. It even works when I'm on wifi at home. I also installed Null 11.1 on the gear.

Did you have to setup anything to make it work on T-mobile USA? How bloated is it? I like the stock version, just would like to have Knox removed and Bluetooth tether.

The only thing I did was install TWRP and flash DragonsAir. It's a modified version of the international stock and it's debloated. Here's the link if you want to read more on it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2503860. The only not working is wifi calling and samsung video, which I can live without.

So do you have a t-mobile Note 3 USA version? Does Bluetooth tether actually work? (Did you verify?), I now show the option, but it does not seem to work.

[Q] ATT and T-MOBILE

That might be a weird (don't want to use word "stupid") question. I have rooted, unlocked ATT branded Flex, running currently on T-Mo network.
Questions;
1. Is there a way i can somehow port T-Mo stock Rom into it?
2. How do i get rid of the ATT bloat on my Flex?? I was trying BloatFree app, but with it i was not able even see installed ATT apps..
Anything will be appreciated.
Really can't do anything with roms until we have a custom recovery for the Flex, but even then, I don't see the point of running a ROM that belongs to another variant of the device.
I like root explorer for taking care of bloat, but there are other apps that can take care of bloat as well, you just need to look for them. There's also a list floating around with a list of apps that are safe to remove (I suggest finding and reading this list before removing anything).

1. when we have a recovery you may be able to flash the sock deodexed T-Mobile ROM I posted. No promises it'll work.
2. I use es file explorer and delete then, but you could try titanium backup

Thank you for advices.
And to ".................. but even then, I don't see the point of running a ROM that belongs to another variant of the device.................." - the point, for example is, tethering, or mobile hot spots, if you will. Now, Internet (data) works just fine, 4G, and LTE too. But, becuase (I am guessing) Att Radio is different than T-Mo, i cannot get it to tether, even that "legal" 3GB tether T-Mo allows you to.

I should have been more clear when I said that I didn't see the point of running a rom that belongs to another variant. From my experience in the past with other phones and flashing ported roms, not all of the features were functional. Maybe it'll be different with the Flex.
