Hi all,
So I'm getting a lot of battery drain on my S5. I unplugged the phone this morning at 5 AM (hungover LOL) and went back to bed to wake up at 12 PM with about 40% drain. This is my fifth Android and I don't recall this ever being so bad. Especially considering this phone (and battery) are only three weeks old. Could it be manufacturer defect on the battery???
Here is the Android Battery display as well as "Battery Widget Reborn" stats. I'm running BatteryGuru too.
I have no idea why Weatherbug or Youtube or Sirius XM are SO HIGH.... considering I never opened either app. Actually just installed Sirius XM seeing as I haven't used it.
Any thoughts of what else I should look into?
I've turned as much bloatware "off" as I could too.

Dude, use Ultra Power Saving Mode when you're not using your phone. It will make a huge difference. With my phone just seating there over night, as in about 6 to 8 hours, it will loose no more than one percent. With some txts coming through, it will loose no more than 5 percent.

There's a good possibility that one of the apps you have installed is keeping your device awake and not letting the processor go to sleep. Hence, your battery life decreases at a faster rate. Go to Settings > General > Battery, then press the battery graph to get details. You will want to pay attention to the "Awake" part. If there is a solid blue line, it means something on your phone is not letting it go into idle sleep, which is the primary reason for battery drain.
Weatherbug could be set to detect your location or update the temperature way too often. I would look through the options and try to scale it back a bit. Once an hour for location and temperature update is usually fine.
Sirius XM could also be keeping your device awake. That's a large % usage for something you claim to not have opened or used yet.
I would uninstall both of these applications first and then evaluate your battery life and "Awake" reading. If the problem is resolved, then add each app back one at a time, making sure to start the app and go through the options to optimize it, and then re-evaluate your battery life and "Awake" reading again.
Thanks...
I've actually Turned Off YouTube and so far it seems much better. Getting more than two mins additional per percentage change. I will keep evaluating.
Anyone else had any issues with You Tube?

I'm not sure I'd agree with YouTube being the culprit, as it doesn't do any background tasks at all. It's probably safe to turn this app back on. More often than not, "Awake" and battery issues are caused by third-party apps.

I'm going to turn back on YouTube and uninstall both Weatherbug & XM and let's get a true baseline.

its rare but its youtube.

Battery life went to hell suddenly. A little investigation shows WiFi never turns off and seems to scan for networks every 3-5 seconds. I have all the options under advanced in wifi unchecked. This has only happened in last few days.
There should be one more option in settings that allows to check for WiFi networks even when WiFi is turned off.

That is shut off as well. Even turned on then back off just to make sure. problem is all the crap that google updates/changes even though you have updates etc turned off.
I am clueless about your issue now. I'm attaching the normal drain I see over night. See the status bar for incoming messages/mails, n the number of times phone was awake while I was sleeping, n see the battery line. I lost like 2-3% overnight from like around 1.30 am until 8 am.

Which rom are you using?
Also I'd say you can give Deep Sleep Battery Saver (DS Battery) a try, in LPZ it really extended my battery, but in LQ4 I didn't think it was necessary.

You can also set only GSM mode, if you do not care about live without 3G like me.
Without root u do not have so many options, remove facebook app and installing app 'fast for facebook' is a good one.

Root is a must if u really want to get the most out of your phone.... now that we have Binary Counter Reset (app)... what are you worried about?!
1. Use Power Saving mode before you go to sleep... when you wake up just disable it
2. Increase Deep Sleep state... codes are on CoCafe's kernel's thread... (CoCore E 2.8)
3. Use the app Battery Widget Reborn.... go the last page/tab... setup Auto Night Mode....
4. Change governors to Hotplug, Powersave or Conservative....
5. Disable Background Sync
6. Disable Live or bright wallpapers...
These are a few I remember
PS: I Seriously typed this all.. I did not Copy/Paste... I think I deserve a thanks!
Sent from my GT-I9070
actually, there's not too much room to play around if you're not rooted
you can also try llama or other profiling stuff to automate enabling/disabling things when you need them, ie. like bluetooth: having it on all the day can consume lots of battery, but you can create an event that enables bt when you're answering the call. then to disable bt when you leave your car or sth like that. just an example - depends on you
ofc 2G saves battery, too. and you can't automate it to 3G while using data unless we get CM but still, you can create profile like enabling sync for 60 secs every 20 minutes, so that it drains less battery that being constantly synced
if you're not rooted, then you can't use kernels that incorporate multi-core aware governors like hotplug or pegasusq as stock roms do have only the basic ones and you can't change them unless you've got root
again, I strongly encourage you to root your phone. otherwise there aren't many possibilities left

Like my expert android friend said - phone without Root is like 50% scrap metal phone, after rooted use Cocore kernel just simple set Governor = Pegasusq+SIO my phone just use 0%-1% when i wake up bed in morning & light usage(less 3G ,wifi online facebook, wechat, calling) i can use about 2 days... No need to set GSM only & install battery boost apps..... Just with Good kernel & good custom ROM enough... :victory:

AW: (Q) how to boost battery life
For me, my battery doesn't care if Facebook is installed or not. just disable notifications and set updating to manually and you're doing good.
When using wi-fi disable mobile data. (In previous firmwares it had more power consumption than mobile data but with lq4 it has less, weird)

If you live in area where 3g network signal is weak or your home walls are fat :
-you got to manually switch to 2g, it could double your battery life... Unfortunately there is no app that can switch this, but only ones that shortcut to Settings>more settings>mobile network>GSM ONLY
1.)When I'm at home, i use wifi + gsm only (weak 3g),
2.)when i get outside on the streets or to the university i switch back to auto and turn off wifi
3.)When I travel between cities i switch to gsm only also
I cant use it more than 8-9 hs.. Its anything wrong here?:

To save battery better to not use any battery booster or any ram increaser its no use instead you should install less app and games cause it use background process restarts automatically even if it is not in use turn off gps  and turn off data at night when it is not in use use brightness level at modrate

Hi all
I'm new to android and am having some major issues with my Sony New xperia z.
First off stamina mode is simply not working. It did to start but it's now not changing the expected battery life when toggled on and off. That's just the start though.
Battery life had been absolutely terrible. I have been deliberately stopping myself from using the handset just so I can make it through the day.
I have come from an iPhone 4 and am quite a heavy user normally, my battery always lasted well beyond one day. New I know the screen and processor on this are awesome but I'm literally not going to be able to use any apps or anything if this is the true battery life.:crying:
I noticed that android os was taking the majority of my battery for just if today, screen has since taken over since I got in because I've been searching the net for potential answers.
Android services is up there as well. I installed a battery checker to see if my phone is but going into deep sleep for some reason and found that there had been something like 3000 wakelocks since last charge (unplugged this morning). I'm now down to 3% after about 13.5 hours since unplugged.
Screenshot was from before I started writing this post.
Any help please. If this isn't some sort of bug/fixable errorI might have to see about returning this phone!
Is this amount of wake locks normal? How can I tell what's stopping my phone from sleeping? I'm new to android other than my nexus 7 which had always been amazing in terms of battery.
Thanks all
John

I have downloaded gsam - its how I knew there were over 3000 wakelocks but to be honest I've found it all a bit baffling. I'm pretty sure something's happening in the background when it shouldn't be but its like trying to find a needle in a haystack - I'm not sure what processes are what, and what parts of the system should be doing certain things anyway... Does that make sense?
Its dead now, so using my nexus 7 instead. I'll charge tonight, use as normal and monitor it tomorrow. Is there anything I could post from gsam up here that you genius's could help me out with? I bow to your mightier wisdom and plead for help!!! I love my new handset but this is leaving a real sour taste and my excitement and joy of leaving iOS behind me is waning!
Should I use it without stamina mode tomorrow and see if that improved things? Or should I use it as I did today?!
Thanks again everyone for your help.
Maybe you can upload app usage screen and kernel wakelocks.
Reboot ur phone 2 3 times ant Try it tomorrow without stamina mode

Did you do a full wipe after the update?
Yes I did. All from the scratch. I just red that one htc one owner had similar issue and his fast boot option was off he enabled it and things got way better. so was mine off just enabled it.
Why is everyone so surprised at Android System being at the top of the new battery stats?
It makes sense really. If you don't use your phone a lot, and nothing else is running taking up power, the system is going to be at the top...
As far as an actual drop in battery life, I'd download GSM battery monitor or Better Battery Stats and check for wakelocks.

Yeah I agree, especially if you reset your battery monitoring often, it can be highly confusing and misleading to read battery usage stats. I use Du Battery Monitor which I've been happy with.
I have wakelock detector installed. And also noticed android system wakelocks on cpu wakelocks are high on the high. Higher than anything else. And this happend in the first half an hour I am on the phone. First screenshot is cpu wakelock and second is wakelock triggers.
What would you guys advice to monitor for battery usage : over what time period and what to pay attention most. My wake lock detector is on now and I will do more screenshots tonight.

Well at least your phone is going into deep sleep and doesn't look like any rogue app. You may want to Greenify facebook though.
Also look here for a battery "calibration", some say it worked for them: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43579577&postcount=36105
And don't forget you need to let your battery "settle" which takes a couple of days.

I...don't think 16 hours is terrible considering that you seem to have been doing some Youtube and PDF-reading. The percentage on that PDF viewer seems pretty high but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Facebook is obviously the biggest culprit remaining.
I would try to use Facebook in your browser instead of the app. I'm not a heavy Facebook user and don't need the notifications. It gave me a big battery boost after deinstalling the app. Facebook is constantly syncing and tracking your location, it's very batterie unfriendly

Haven't had problems with screen freezing, but I was getting some pretty subpar battery life.
It may be counter-intuitive but my battery life has Drastically improved by turning off power saver. I don't know if the throttle up/down on cpu and brightness is too aggressive and does more harm than good or what but this was the major offender for me. My battery went from ~10 hours to ~20+ on normal usage.
Some other things I did that netted a gain before turning off power saver.
Change Settings/Wifi/Advanced/Keep Wifi on During Sleep from always to only when plugged in.
Freeze app/task for S-Search
Freeze S-Voice
Turn off settings / controls / motions
Turn off settings / controls / air gesture
Turn off settings / controls/ smartscreen

WiFi is off (supposedly) when it's sleeping so that shouldn't be happening. Even so, I wouldn't expect apps auto-updating to take the battery down 40%.

Possibly an app goin crazy during a wakelock, which allows an app to do stuff while the phone is asleep.http://manojprasaddevelopers.blogspot.com/2012/02/what-is-wakelock.html
There are sleep related bugs sometimes as well in the roms, but since its been out a long time now, probably isn't that.
Not sure what else.
